Go to <zone> so you can get <thing>

Remember in CoX when you could go to Warburg and launch the rocket to get a one-of temp power (the Nuke)? I used to do that, other people used to do that, and I think the intention of it in the first place was to attract people to Warburg (a PVP zone, thus dangerous) so that the PVPers who would presumably be there had a constant supply of targets to attack. It created a game of cat and mouse, or at least that was the intention, I think.

Several thoughts on this:

1. Can CoT do something like this where you go to a zone and participate in repeatable content, like missions etc to get a temp power or unlock of some kind? I would like that. Moreover, what I really would have preferred was a zone like Warburg where doing the PVE content well enough can get you some cool perks, just not as a PVP zone. Can we do that?

2. If there are going to be PVP areas where open world PVP is to transpire, will anyone go there, or will anyone be persuaded to brave those dangers if there stuff like this (or something else) to be gained? And if not this, then what? I personally don't like PVP and probably wouldn't go to a PVP zone to actively look for other players to harass (if I want to harass people, I generally team up with them and do it over chat :) ) but I wonder what they could try to make it more worth our while to entice people like me to give it a go.

The only thing that will

The only thing that will entice me to participate in PVP is an absolutely level playing field. Where everybody, ostensibly at any rate, is equally powered. But most PVPers I've known don't want that. They want to be King of the Hill and want every lob-sided, unfair advantage they can get to maintain that position. Or at least their self-perception of it. If there is no such thing as Uber-Gear-of-Bad-Assery they will spend all their unemployed hours looking for terrain advantages or programming exploits and use them to gank casuals and gloat over the corpses of their frustrated avatars.

Or maybe I've just had a completely unique experience. Perhaps the majority of PVP'ers are kind and gentle souls handing out balloons and cotton candy to welcome the noobs. I just havent met them. :)

Seriously, tho. If you have that kind of disposable time, and this is how you choose to spend it, good on you. If you've put in the time, I guess you'd consider it fair to be able to punk anyone who hasn't. That doesn't make it fun for anyone but you, however.

I'm a casual player. If there's a way to keep PVP Casual I 'might' dabble in it. But if you force me into a PVP zone to get something I need, I guarantee I will resent it.

(Gosh, I wonder how long I've been waiting to vent that!)

From what I have read, the

From what I have read, the server will have multiple versions of each zone.

So in your case, if you did not wish to PvP, you could simply switch to the PvE-only version of that zone.

I feel that the idea of

I feel that the idea of dropping goodies for one kind of game play in the play pen of another type of game play is a relic of those early days, much like having raids with 40+ people * or believing players would spread TF missions over two or more days. Today, a more common approach is to provide optional missions that require players to participate in PvP, in some cases enticing them with ridiculously generous rewards.

The answer to the first point is yes (or, if you prefer, I agree). I believe such mini-games are good to have, especially if they are something people can accomplish or work toward even if they only have ten or fifteen minutes to be online. I'm not keen on the rewards being something like the Warburg Nukes, but that is a separate quibble.

On the second point, as I said, I believe that is an idea that will not work better today than it did for CoH. As has been put forth in other threads, lowering the barrier to entry, evening the playing field (as much as possible), and engaging maps/games will most likely have the best result in getting people into PvP. There is nothing that developers could put into a game that is more likely to prompt a player to try PvP than a friend or SG mates saying, "Hey, let's PvP. It's fun." Likewise, nothing is more likely to kill enthusiasm than realizing that to even be competitive in PvP requires going through a grind.

* I'm interested in hearing how that will work out in Wildstar, once that information is available.

1.I Like the idea of a missions that give some sort of temporary boost but caution against the boost being too large.

2. I don't think I will participate much beyond checking things out. There are just way too many flaws in a PVP system that is based off the combat system in CoX for me to enjoy it.
As for how to encourage it for more people, I don't know if there is a way really....by the very nature of it being a 'zone' its effectively limited in style of PVP it can offer. Its either area of influence based or a free for all. The zone can have multiple optional goals like capture the flag or a bounty system but the zone is still either area of influence or free for all. So either someone enjoys that type of PvP or not and very little will influence them.

I will say I would strongly advise against using rewards as a lure into PvP, especially the way CoX did it. No matter how many times you say PvP in the warnings of the zone a non-pvper will resent engaging in pvp to get that reward and will not stay in the zone after they get that reward. It won't draw people in it will turn them off.

You are not alone Warbird. I

You are not alone Warbird. I absolutely loathe PvP. I dabbled in it for brief periods of time with CoX, but have hated it from the first time I played Halo and got camped because everybody else new where the best weapons were and where they could hide so I couldn't shoot them. As far as I'm concerned you are absolutely right in your assessment. If it were up to me, I'd get rid of all PvP systems on all games. It's not, so no need to gnash your teeth and stick pins in your voodoo doll of me all of you PvP'ers out there. I'm in the group that thinks that PvP should be a completely separate entity from the PvE system. Different areas to go to, different ways powers work, different enhancements for powers in PvP, hell even completely different servers to play on! I'd rather there not be any PvP zones with things in them that I might want my character to have. I never did go to any of the PvP zones to get any Shivans or badges, unless it was the one where I could stay inside the base for X amount of time to achieve the badge because I needed it for an Accolade.

I got chills! They're multiplyin'. And I'm losin' control. Cuz the power, I'm supplyin'. Why it's ELECTRIFYIN'!!

I recall reading somewhere

I recall reading somewhere that the devs have stated they will not put anything in PvP to "force" you to enter. So no badges and I would guess no super cool temp powers like nukes or shivan shards.

One of my alts Phantom

One of my alts Phantom Gunslinger. I went and done every mission I could find that gave a temp power. My goal was to have as many of them as possible the guy was meant to be a cross between batman and the punisher. Where he had a device for any threat, and guns too. So yeah temp rewards!

I don't know what it would

I don't know what it would take to make me do PVP, I doubt that it's even possible. I think I would just quit the game if PVP became absolutely necessary.

That said, I think the best form of PVP would be to make the game totally PVE, then make a separate PVP module with its own separate server that you upload your toon onto (this would work mechanically like the test server on CoX did, sort of) and you can PVP with him like playing a first person shooter. 1 on 1 games, team vs team, king of the hill, tournaments, etc. Whatever you like. I don't know how much business that server would get, but it would then be possible to separate the PVP aspect of your toon from the PVE. PVP server would have all different enhancements, etc, which you'd either just HAVE, or would need to win or buy or whatever.

I can accept PvP-themed temp

I can accept PvP-themed temp powers - and badges with PvP-themed names - as logical rewards in PvP zones or instances of zones. If they also provide some benefit in PvE, no matter how slight, I will probably enter the zone/instance but minimize my exposure to open zone PvP by any means allowed by the game. If I find an "enemy" player attempting to get the same reward, I will offer to cooperate with them against any PvE threats, as I did in Bloody Bay when seeking the Shivan temp power.

Im all for there being

Im all for there being certain missions/zones that you can repeat without too much hassle to get a temp power/boost/whatever, like the Nukes from Warburg.
In ALL the Warburg runs I did I NEVER encountered a PvPer wanting to attack me (Justice Server), but it would have royally pissed me off if they kept on doing that while I was trying to get the Nukes which could be hard enough as it was depending on your character.

I do not like one on one or

I do not like one on one or team battle PvP. I do however enjoy PvPvE. What I mean is, where you stick two sides of the playerbase in a zone, and they work competitively towards an end goal. Something akin to Recluse's Victory, only better designed.

This kind of thread probably

This kind of thread probably wouldn't be complete without giving thought to how the idea of control points could be used in CoT. Rewards for participating in an activity or event needn't be temporary powers. They could also take the form of access to bonuses for a given period of time. An obvious comparison are the settlers in Wildstar, who can build/activate machines that provide bonuses to speed or health, or even taxis for fast travel.
