Go, my Minions.. DESTROY ALL IN YOUR PATH!

So apparently the Operator is our form of the Mastermind.

3 things.

1. YAY! WE GET MASTERMINDS!

2. It might be too early to ask about this, but can we get a little more in depth about how they'll be working in this game? From what I can tell, Operators will be MinionGroup/SecondarySet with the secondary set being choices between weaker versions of damaging abilities, healing abilities, or buffs, correct? Or am I completely wrong there? Also, does the minion group chosen also grant abilities to buff your minions?

3. Minion customization. Will it be a thing? Please tell me it will be a thing because it kinda ruined the feeling of being powerful when you saw you had the same minions as everyone else with that specific choice. Get tired of seeing the same 3 robots..

Revenge is motivation enough. At least it's honest...

I would love to be able to actually customize my minions rather then just have the same cookie cutter minion that EVERYONE has. I want them to look like they are my minions. Not just a couple thugs I hired on Craigslist.

I'll go against the mold here

I'll go against the mold here. I wouldn't object to customizing minions, but I don't want master...uh...operators delayed to include it. I HAVE to have a minion master, no other MMO has anything like it. Closest was Age of Conan, and even that was rough at best. Okay and Champions, but it still just wasn't the same feel.

As noted in another thread:

As noted in another thread: too early. Way, *way* too early. While I personally love the notion, there are a significant number of complexities brought up by custom minions that may not be obvious. That doesn't mean it won't happen -- nor does my saying that mean that it will. Or that if it does, it will be available when Operators first appear.

Now, that said: some 'customizations' are easier than others. Things that are equivalent to a costume piece change or an animation change seem like the most likely to make it in, whether that means "sooner" or "at all", simply because we have to support most of what is required there for normal characters anyway. And of those, ones that appear elsewhere in the game would, for obvious reasons, be the first candidates (but even then, there isn't any guarantee they could be used without adjustments, unfortunately).

I'd be thrilled if we could

I'd be thrilled if we could choose between 'stock' skins at first. One of my former MMs was a cybered-up mob boss. I could have used the Family styles as-was. I understand how tough it is to program so if the Devs have to go through all the effort to make Mooks then why not get more use out of them?

You know, I'm going to use that as a theme for an Operator whenever I get the chance ;)

If nothing else, getting a primary/secondary color choice for my pets would be a dream come true, anything else more than that is the whipped cream and cherry on that awesome sundae.

lol its funny someone should mention hiring thugs from craigslist cause that was the theme of one of my MM's... sadly i never did much with that one... he was a lazy toon anyway or he wouldn't have hired lousy thugs off craiglist and would have hired or kidnapped some real loyal/brainwashed minions.

To be honest, how they look is secondary (to me) over how they ACT. I'll take crappy (relatively) appearance if they actually do what I tell them to do.

The Pet Run-In Bug. (shudder)

GO my minions! HUG THEM UNCONSCIOUS! (cuz i have kids and people don't die, they get defeated.)

Could this be solved by 2 different A.I. personalities (rule-sets); one melee, one ranged.

I'd (n++) the request for SOME sort of minion customization- as someone mentioned, just a few skins to choose from, a la CO would go a LONG way.

Also, the ability to name pets, and have the names stick to the model . As someone who named my minions in-game, it was immersion-damaging (though mildly) to never know what face was going to pop up under the name I'd assigned to each 'role'.

And I wanted my debonaire spy with a gaggle of leather-clad gun-wielding Bond girls, darnit!

Based on how often the topic of "female MM pets" came up on the CoH forums I figured EVERYONE who played a MM wanted a gaggle of leather-clad gun-wielding Bond girls. ;)

P.S. Would this be close enough?

My Ninja/Trick Mastermind was

My Ninja/Trick Mastermind was Ku no Ichi ... which was just one of those wonderful multi-lingual multi-level puns. She wasn't "Kunoichi" (which literally means "female ninja" in Japanese) ... she was "Ku no Ichi" (which literally means "One of Nine" in Japanese instead) ... hence, the pun aspect, which I played up in her Bio without resorting to a Star Trek reference. This meant she came from the "Ku" Clan (or the "9" Clan) ... which, of course, no one had ever heard of (which for a Ninja Clan falls under the heading of "go figure...").

Her pets were named just numbers ... San (3), Shi (4), Itsutsu (5), Roku (6), Nana (7), Hachi (8). This meant that her Oni was named "San" (so "Oni-san" which just so happens to sound almost like "Onii-san" which means "big brother" in Japanese) ... and one of the two Jounin was named "Shi" (which is a hominym for the word "Death" in Japanese). The rest of them were just all disposable "faceless minions" so they needed no kind of "personal" names to identify them. ^_~

Even if the first options

Even if the first options they gave us were just the ability to pick from pre-determined lists and stick with them instead of the random Thugs and gangers I'd be ok with that to start. That could even simulate the 'Clone MM' idea but instead of my pets looking like me I change to look like them.

When I created my Dark/Robotics mastermind. I used the police terms from demolition man.
Murder Death and Kill for my basic drones.
The healer bots were named in a similar fashion. Pain and Torture. The big bot was named Destroy.
When The Incarnate powers came out I had added Misery for my debuffer and Annihilate for fem fatale.

My bots were named after characters from Ground Defense Force Mao-chan.

Mao, Misora, and Silvia (elementary schoolers) for the little bots

Yuriko and Chinami (junior high students) for the mid level

and Kagome (the teacher) for the big bot.

As for customization, I would have loved just the ability to color them differently or something so I could more easily track who was where and, in team missions, which ones were mine.

I remember my original

I remember my original version of Sanguine Sanction (bots/poison) was a Praetorian. I decided to run the Shattered Glass method of naming her bots. The basic trio were Thrust, Ramjet, and Dirge. The protector bots were, I think, Shockwave and Soundwave. Assault bot was Unicron. Then Water blast came out...and the mastermind version got shelved.

Another favorite MM of mine was a necro/time. Zombies were Klaatu, Barada, and Nikto. Grave Knights were Ashley and William. Lich was Gort.

yeah that was sad. Due to a few monkey wrenches, ruined it for everyone.
I think that female pets should have been allowed. If one made an offensive characher whetehr it's a MM or otherwise, should be dealt with.

I havea feeling though even with female pets, most would be a little bit more creative then rushing simply to make a pimp. There probably would be some though. I think most would be pretty creative.

One female player didn't understand the decision much. She asked "so they banned female pets because some people may make pimps but don't mind people making female toons with male pets on the basis of that she is a whore."

Also they refused to make female characters due to the "fear" of "Pimp" characters.

They pretty much denied this this again and again and again. What they explicitly said was that they never made female versions of Mastermind sets because the tech didn't support any customization for MM pets at all. The whole "afraid of pimp characters" was something the playerbase made up and kept spreading around, regardless of how many times it was debunked.

After all, by the end, you could have an army of women if you so chose, for every single class but the Mastermind (get Soul Mastery Epic Pet, and combine it with Lore pets from Knives of Vengeance, Talons of Vengeance, or Seers, and there you go - an all-female army of summons)

I'm sure that when CoT adds MM-like pets, they'll all be fairly customizable (or at least have different base forms to choose from - I didn't care about the gender of my pets so much, but I wished I could make my Thugs look more like Mafiosos than street punks and Mad Max rejects).

It'd be interesting to see "swarm operators" who triple the number of minions per tier, but make them proportionately weaker -- so instead of 3 zombies, you get a small horde of 9 wimpier zombies. It always felt a teensy bit underwhelming to unleash my undead horde of .. three shuffly dead guys.

Yeah, ninjae just call out (with hand gestures, they aren't Silent Blade) for numeric names. My genin were named Ichigo, Sango, and Gogo, so basically 1-5, 3-5, and 5-5 I guess. All fairly girly names, so I wished I could make them look female.

Well, yes and no -- remember in COH most of the AOEs had an upper limit on the targets allowed; usually 5 targets for a lower-tier AOE and 8 for a higher one, though I think some of the Ascended (baahhh the name escapes me just now.. people who did the Well of Furies quest line) AOEs went up to 12-15. If Titans works in a similar way, being a swarm-master might allow you to be MORE survivable versus AOEs, by giving you more targets than an AOE can actually hit.

Not entirely. Say your Swarm

Not entirely. Say your Swarm has 16 targets and the AoE cap is 8. You're fighting 2 of the same enemy...your Spawn is grease.

However I would like to explore something interesting: The idea of Tanking Pets. I know that some of the MM Pets (the big Brute from Thugs comes to mind) acted as tanks after a fashion. Why not make it a formal thing? The T3 pet (assuming that there is such a thing) is tougher, generates more aggro but does less damage...effectively a tank. Then even if the AoEs are hitting most/all of the pets the ST attacks are not.

Might make the difference...might not

That only works if the Pet is

That only works if the Pet is designed to attract and withstand a beating. I can tell you that Ninja Pets could barely stand up to ANYTHING because their Defenses were so pathetic (7% Defense against Level 50 Foe NPCs? That's IT?!?).

The flipside of this is of course the notion that the Player "ought to" be acting as the Aggro Magnet so as to free up the Pets to go Scrapperlock on the Foe NPCs. Bare minimum though, when you're driving your own personal army, SOME sort of Aggro Management system needs to be present ... whether it's Player based or Pet based. On my Ninja/Time Mastermind, I wound up needing to use Provoke out of the Presence Pool(!) just so my Ninjas wouldn't fold like pre-creased origami rice paper when Foe NPCs breathed in their vicinity so as to rely on Bodyguard Mode in an attempt to increase their survival rate from Abjectly Pathetic up to Merely Sad.

Might be a good idea to remember that the ideas behind powset creation are Base, Theme, and Animation. Pondering how that would work for minions hurts my brain though, so I try not to remember it too often.

Maybe...
Base: Ranged
Theme: Soldier (Mercenary),
Animation.... Something. Helicopter, for transportation/summoning?

I'm sure this has something to do with the law of Conservation of Ninjitsu. One ninja is an unstoppable badass, fifty ninjas can be beaten down by any random old man, toddler, or gust of wind. (as long as you get them all at once, and don't accidentally leave ONE.)

Might be a good idea to remember that the ideas behind powset creation are Base, Theme, and Animation. Pondering how that would work for minions hurts my brain though, so I try not to remember it too often.
Maybe...
Base: Ranged
Theme: Soldier (Mercenary),
Animation.... Something. Helicopter, for transportation/summoning?
Just a start. Any other ideas?

I think the BTA thing would apply more if we were talking about specific powers within the set; talking about wanting to see specific minion sets is loosely analogous to "animation." It doesn't really change how the set or powers *work,* just how they *look*. Almost any minion type could do almost any type of attack -- Ninjas might go base: Melee with a katana, or base: ranged with shuriken. Mutant Bugs might be mostly about the Melee, but Bombardier Beetles might have a (base) ranged (theme) toxic spray and Bolas Spiders might have a (base) ranged control attack that (theme) stuns opponents by (animation) slinging sticky silk at their prey. (BTA hurts my head too, and I'm sure I've still only got it about half right..)

Also, now that I'm thinking about it... DINOSAURS. A small swarm of Compsognathus for the low-tier bitey cannon-fodder, a Pachycephalosaurus (knockbacks/knockdowns) and/or a Dilophosaur (poison spit with various debuffs) for mid-level dps/control, and at the top tier, an Ankylosaur (for tanking) or an Allosaur (for nomming foes). because if you don't love dinosaurs THE TERRORISTS WIN.

I am the Godzilla of love. Where I have passed, nothing remains but smoldering rubble and traumatized Japanese people.

Conservation of Ninjitsu is something that works "fine" for entertainment, but lousy as a game mechanic for a Pet Herder Archetype. Indeed, the closest thing you could get to a kind of Conservation of Ninjitsu in City of Heroes was ... Nemesis Lieutenant Vengeance ... which the Ninja Mastermind didn't have (oops!).

Seriously ... doing a Conservation of Ninjitsu mechanic on a Ninja Mastermind makes about as much sense as Defiance 1.0 did for Blasters, since for a Pet Herder Archetype it is based on the notion that LESS IS MORE. The problem is that all too often the game mechanics functionally dictate that LESS IS A LOT LESS.

Apologies, I meant that your former ninja minions apparently were subject to CoN, since they were slightly less durable than wet rice paper. I do not in any way support or condone CoN as a play mechanic! :)

In order for that to have been true, Ninjas would have had to be "awesome" under at least SOME conditions! The simple fact of the matter was that, natively, there were NO CONDITIONS under which Ninjas were awesome. Indeed, the only way to "make" Ninjas awesome was to either ... boost their Defense with Force Fields so as to turn them into mini-Super Reflexes Scrappers ... or ... make sure they never got any aggro on themselves (and if they did, to pull it off them immediately!) so that their lack of adequate protection "didn't factor" into their survival rates. In both cases, the "awesome" being applied to them wasn't something "native" to the Ninja powerset itself, but rather than external modifier buttressing their complete and utter inadequacy in all but a precious few edge case conditions (one of which was dependent on the choice of Secondary powerset to achieve).

Conservation of Ninjitsu however could have been achieved if Mastermind (only) Vengeance were allowed to be cast on Defeated Ninja Pets, and that the Vengeance buff would expire if a "replacement" Ninja Pet was summoned for the Defeated Ninja Pet. THAT would have achieved a Conservation of Ninjitsu effect ... but it would have been clunky, and probably have required some major kludging in order to pull it off right, since such an effect really ought to have been built into the Ninja powerset itself.

Indeed ... what I *really* wanted for the Ninja powerset was for the Genin to have Grant Invisibility (usable only on Ninja Pets and Ninja/* Masterminds) given to them with Train Ninjas which would have done wonders for their Defensive weakness(es) by doubling their Defense vs All. I asked Arbiter Hawk about it in person at the last Player Summit and saw him get a curiously contemplative look on his face, since what I was really angling for was a way to Enhance the Defense Buff via slots in Train Ninjas using the Grant Power game mechanic. Unfortunately(!) he told me that any sort of Grant Power mechanic like that wouldn't be able to carry over the Enhancements, so ... Curses, Foiled Again!

If Genin could have cast Grant Invisibility (and had Enhancements from Train Ninjas actually enhancing the Defense buff gained) then the Level 18 Power could have been changed from Smoke Flash to ... Conservation of Ninjitsu as a sort of specialized Vengeance styled power that affects Ninja Pets and Ninja Masterminds.

But sadly ... my dreams were not to be!

As for customization, I would have loved just the ability to color them differently or something so I could more easily track who was where and, in team missions, which ones were mine.
A Mastermind can Daydream ...
Of course, if you could hire Custom Pets ... would you want to?

I like your style!

IIRC that was the stated reason in CoH to disallow a character-creator level of minion design -- people would (or perhaps did) design a bunch of slaves, or a pimp and his hos.

I can't see the hos being a big deal since you could create your own character as a ho already -- the spikey hair and sunken eyes, used on a contact in Steel Canyon actually, you could use on yourself. Presto, done!
