Many moons have passed since

Many moons have passed since Baruk led the small tribe to the coast and settled in one of the coastal caves. He had killed thier cheiftan when challenged and assumed the title in doing so. The tribe he led now was smaller, but had some of the best fighters around. He himself was deadly with his spear and short blade. Many a foe fell to his prowess with his weapons. They lived as peacful as an orc tribe could be from thier cave home in the hills near the shores of lake Gil afforded ample hunting and even raiding.
Today was to be a good day . Baruk and some of his best warriors lay wait as a group of human hunters wandered through the woods. They knew they werent just hunters, but a search and rescue party out to look for some apparantly important items or people that had been taken on a trail near the caves.
Baruk knew he didnt cause this. it wasnt his tribe that took the wagons so close to his home. That would be stupid. He purposely did all his raiding and attacks as tp appear coming from the other side of the lake. He never would hit anything so close to home as he didnt want to constantly be harassed or even worse, have an army raise against his tribe.
He needed answers and first and foremost, he needed to immediately put a stop to this current threat. Killing these humans wasn;t the problem, it was what would happen if they let one of them live. As he stood motionless on the tall branch, hidden in the tree fauna, his mind began to race. what would happen if they did wipe them all out? would more come? if so how many?.....would it stop here.?
Before he could think any more an arrow stuck into the tree by his head....*thunk*. He swore in orcish in muttled breath....Elves also. How could he be so foolish.....the humans were bait!!. Before another arrow struck the tree he was out and charging......Kili, one of his best female warriors, jumped down near him and shockingly managed to catch an elf off guard. Her blade sunk deep in its back and she quickly followed Baruk into the fray....

In the tree he'd climbed,

In the tree he'd climbed, Kevahl swung his arbalest back along the track of the arrow, until a shape that might have been an elf was behind his sight-post. He took up the slack in the trigger and stopped breathing until the stock punched his shoulder; then he rolled back behind the trunk almost before he saw the spray of blood as the bolt ripped through leaves, leather, and elf alike. He smiled as he worked the ratchet, scanning the trees around him to see if there were any enemies behind him...

Baruk dodged a swinging sword

Baruk dodged a swinging sword form one of the humans, and his spear struck home. It passed over the small sheild the man was using, and by the blade meant to fend it off and sunk deep into the underam of his attacker. so deep it sunk the tip of the spear poked out of the collar of his enemy on the other side of his head.
Many orcs would use barbed tipped spears and swords, only to do more damage. Baruk used a smooth tipped spear made of sharpened steel and hardened wood. He loved this weapon and did not want it stuck in one of his enemies , unable to use against the next. As he slid it back out quickly and the mans last gurgle spewed from his mouth, he heard Kili scream with rage... She was surrounded by three elves who had trapped her against a large tree. She was defending the major blows but taking some minor ones, She had a slash on an arm and one of her legs was cut multiple times above her armored plates.
"Borgah Do Kili !!!" Baruk shouted....which was the command for his elite goblin raiders led by Kevahl, one of his finest, to assist Kili. He had a few packs of special troops , Kevahl leading a group of three others who were excellent 'shock' troops. They hit fast and deadly . and were gone quickly.

The only people behind Kevahl

The only people behind Kevahl were his strike team; already moving at Baruk's command to get line of sight on Kili's dance partners. Ferdsoc went to the left, loosing a bolt that struck one elf behind his right knee, stopped from coming out below the kneecap only by the armor that would've protected his leg from the front. Brecki, the only kobold on the team, went straight forward, throwing a light javelin - one of the larger races might have called it a dart - that was deflected from his target's kidneys by the armor, but he did turn see where it had come from... only to take a bolt from Lomak's crossbow in the face. Brecki pulled out his sword as he closed with the remaining elf; Kevahl, Ferdsoc, and Lomak reloading, watching to see if any of the enemy tried to take "Brecki the Bait".

The elf didnt fall for the

The elf didnt fall for the bait , it did'nt want to turn its back to the orc....Kili was swinging widly. The elf did however roll to dodge one of the wild swings, and come up kneeling sheild forward, and backed against a tree. Kili was off to its left, and the kobold foward. It sneared at them both as it quickly glanced down at its fallen comrades.
A rustling behind the elf, caused Kili to pause her charge, then she saw them, Two humans and another elf joined the fray.

Baruk was barking orders while removing his spear from another hunters eye socket, he was nowhere near Kili, and he was begining to be outnumbered as well... More humans and elves were appearing, as if this whole thing was one huge trap. One of Baruks personal guards fell near him, not without taking two opponents with him. There was only one left. He and baruk stood back to back fending off more than striking down enemies. The other orcs there were all in similar situations, out numbered or dead or dying.

Too many, thought Kevahl. He

Too many, thought Kevahl. He looked quickly for the driest of the undergrowth, deadfall, anything else that would burn well. "Fire West!" he shouted in the Goblin tongue, as he pulled a small clay bottle out of a pouch. He pulled a short length of cloth out of the hole in the stopper, lighting it with a firestriker, and then tossed the bottle onto a fallen branch that lay beyond the furthest west of the Spear-and-Shield warriors. A mix of lamp oil and brandy caught flame from the rag, spreading fire over the branch. Moments later, Ferdsoc and Lomac sent their bottles into the brush to the north and south of branch. As they moved toward Baruk's position, they fired at the elves and humans that were already in the melee, so that the Spear-and-Shield warriors could break loose more easily...

Brecki was too busy to light his bottle, let alone throw it. He dove under the legs of a human who was facing Kili, striking with his sword at one of those legs as he passed. Blood was now on the blade, along with the concoction Yasmi had prepared for the strike team's blades. Brecki hoped that concoction would prove to be lethal, or at least incapacitating. He stood below the arcs of Kili's sword and asked, "Move toward Chief, now, yes?

Grib was well being Grib

Grib was well being Grib during all this. Struggling with the loose idea of loyalty and desire not to be killed. So he was in a bush as the orcs seemed to be losing. "Fire West!" came the order from Kevahl. Okay, he can't play non-combatant much longer if the Orc won he be in deep trouble with the tribe, if the Elves and Humans won well he be in slightly less trouble. He removed his fire bomb and lit it throwing it at some dry looking thorn bushes. Then he drew his throwing daggers, normally throwing knives was not the best idea. Grib however been mixing some fungus and molds he found in the caverns as well as other ingredients. He wasn't sure how strong the resulting poison was not being able to experiment on the tribe members. So a little field test seems to be in order.

Really why couldn't he poke some of the more annoying members he had no idea. Anyway, he dipped his throwing knives in the green goop then flung two at one of the elves. "Bad day when Orc need Goblins to save them." The comment was more to spur the orcs to fight harder than to annoy them. But this was Grib after all.

The fires spead quickly as

The fires spead quickly as the elves and humans scrambled to maintain thier advantage. Two humans had been standing in the wrong spots when the flames engulfed them entirely. The nimble elves swung up on branches, and darted and weaved thier way away from the burning wall that seemed to be everywhere. One of the elves fell from a branch ,apparently for no reason, untill a dagger was noticed sticking from its exposed back calf. Another elf saw the blade and stared in the direction it came from, it got off two arrows at Grib before it had to move or be ingulfed in flame.

The human Brecki had sliced was now prone on the ground, and two more humans were looking for an escape route near the body. "Kozah Li karu!!"
The shout from Baruk overpowered the noise of battle and flame....And Another noise was heard thundering through the forest...
Baruk has turned and blocked and then using his bare fist punched an elven attacker right in the face, dropping it immediately. His spear was spinnig wild arcs mostly on defense and the minor wounds hed take only seemed to spur his bloodlust on. He stuck when he could, never giving in totally to the blind rage he felt against his opponents, knowing that could be his mistake. He maintained some bastion of control as he spun again, this time the tip of his spear slicing a humans neck at it passed.
"Kozah Li Karu" would be heard again and again, nearby in the forest and gaining momentum.....thundering hooves almost following it.
The fires were doing thier trick.. the elves were seperating from the humans almost at the breaking point. The humans, whose number was massive now for being flushed from the flames, were gathering in a clearing just opposite Baruk and his last guard who were still surrounded by a superior mix of both enemies. The elves seemed less aggresive with each wild swing , and the humans , though they had numbers, seemed more panicked than before.
"Kozah Li Karu!!" The thundering Voice shouted as a massive figure burst through the brush behind Baruk and caught two opponents flat. They heard it coming but were too busy wqrding the spear strikes that seemed more offensive than defensive each passing moment. The figure slammed the first human it came into contact with, sending the flying , broken corpse into another one across the opposite side of the ring of opposition. The elf nect to the human tried to duck but was clipped by a huge axe that shattered its leg even from a glancing blow and sent it tumbling in a pile of its own armor. A quick Stomp from the attacker crush its skull and ended its misery. The ring of attackers stared at this massive opponent and instantly wanted to run.
Standing nearly 8 1/2 feet tall, massive muscular frame with heavey armor, a huge axe, and of course its distinctive horned head, Kozah, the minotaur had arrived.
And much to the dismay of thier opponents he had brought friends........

Kili was in full agreement to head towards the cheif... she had only one issue. She had taken an arrow in the thigh and it was hindering her... she hobbled as quickly as she could, trying to keep pace with the swift goblin lead.

Grib screamed as one of the

Grib screamed as one of the arrows punctured his left shoulder. How did it come to this? A cave goblin stuck in a woods with a bunch of Orcs fighting Elves and Humans? Cave Goblins were ambush fighters. Oh well a fight is a fight and he can't hide any longer. Still with the arrow in his shoulder he rushed out leaping at a human with his daggers now with poison on the blades slashing at any exposed soft spots. Poison was helpful in such fights all he needed to do was cut deep enough for the toxins to enter the blood.

From behind a tree sprang one of Kozah's allies a sleek Naga. Her arms wrap around an elf "Hello handsome. How about a hug." The Elf fought back but as he broke her grip with her arms he came to the realization his legs were now wrapped by the serpent tail. Quick as a cobra she curved around to his front and squeezed bones snapping in that python-like grip. "Oh, I broke him."

Kozah grunted and stood near Baruk now both exchanging quck respectful nods. Baruk took advantage of the scared look and the slight hesitation of his opponents. he struck with his spear quickly and another human dropped with a massive hole in its neck. The elves turned and noticed the fires closing in, they went into a defensive position for the first time all battle. Two of the humans ran, right at the naga, not quite realizing what was happening....

Gribs opponent dodged his first strike and tried to parry the second, he failed. The dagger bit into flesh, and the human stepped back. he lunged at the smaller foe, only to feel awkward and weak. He glanced at his wound, then at his opponent. Then everything went black..

Kevahl and the rest of his

Kevahl and the rest of his squad formed up on Kili and Brecki, their arbalests slung for the moment. Kevahl had his blades out, both coated with Yasmi's latest poison, guarding the back. Lomac, being part Hob on his father's side, was strongest, so he helped Kili stay on her feet and moving. Ferdsoc and Brecki took left and right-front, stabbing enemies that weren't down, and occasionally some that were...

Grib tried to hide the pain

Grib tried to hide the pain as the arrow in his shoulder ached when he moved wrong and the arrow shifted "Gragdok!" So he cursed like who cares what the problem now was his left arm went numb. Throwing another poisoned throwing knife at an elf he missed. "Harknok Stupid elves agility! Stand still so I can kill you!" For a moment it seemed he went berserk as he charged not even drawing out his fighting blade. That moment ended with him stopping and blowing a blast of powder at the elf's face. The elf leaped back reflexively and when nothing seemed to happen he laughed and raised his sword "You filth your trick.,.. 'cough'... " the coughing got worst and he dropped the sword grabbing his throat as his air passage closed from swelling. Grib then drew out his knife and slit the elf's throat.

Sikana the Naga was moving again. Well in truth she didn't stop moving she drew her fighting spear from her back and in a mix of fight style and dance. Blocking one blow from a human attacker with the staff her tail moved against the other. Her scales took the blunt of the sword before that trunk thick tail slammed into the second man.

The blow from her tail all

The blow from her tail all but crushed the man with the leather armor. He was fighting to get air back into his broken frame and gurgling as he roll around on the ground. The second attacker who was initially blocked, parried a few minor strikes by this new opponent, and then went defensive. He backed up a few paces and took a quick glance around. The battle was lost. The fires that forced most of the humans into a small clearing now tore through the clearing, as they scattered. The elves being forced into the trees, were all but dissapearing, very few could even be seen. The survivors on the hunters/human side were fleeing or being beaten back and killed. Baruk watched the few remaining foes back off the ring that had once encircled him and his guard. Kozah stood near him and watched as the naga danced her dance of death with opponent after opponent.

Baruk was aware the flames would soon engulf the area they were in as well, and decided not to go after the humans fleeing. Instead he called out to the remaining members of the tribe to fall back and regroup. There were still enemies around, even though they were fleeing, and he had no idea where qall the elves had gone. Too risky he thought to chase down the foes and be ambushed with the fires cutting off routes everywhere. Thats when he saw Kili limping up being helped by the goblins of Kevahl's troop.
"we regroup" he yelled towards them..then nodded to Kozah. "many foes still around, we need strength in numbers,"........

Although Ssen wasn't in the initial ambush, he now arrived to Baruk's side, holding in his hands a two-handed sword with a curved blade and strapped to his left forearm was a turtle shell used to block attacks and arrows, the lower half of his body covered in leather armor. Ssen usually kept to himself within the tribe, but provided help wherever needed. Those who cared enough to talk to Ssen would know that he held the position of shaman in his old lizardfolk tribe and still possesses the talents, but has also developed his physical strength.

"Ssen ssseems to be late, but perhapsss the battle is not yet over?" He said to Baruk once arriving next to him, then flicking his forked tongue out to sniff for enemies.

"Perhaps not," agreed Faoreh

"Perhaps not," agreed Faoreh as she joined the group around Baruk and Kozah. The pardacentaur's spears were in a quiver running the length of her feline lower torso, her hands held a longbow and a nocked arrow ready to draw. She turned her upper torso and nodded to indicate directions. "The elves are gathering in a group of trees over there; three less now than when I first saw them. The humans are gathering in clearing about thirty yards to the left of the elves. Together they still outnumber us, but I think we are more than our numbers would indicate."

With Kili as safe could be expected, Lomac helped her lay down. Kehvahl gave her a bolt to bite down on, then pushed the arrow through her leg. A dollop of a healing unguent on entry and exit wounds went under a fairly clean rag, tightened not quite enough to restrict blood flow.

As the elves retreated into

As the elves retreated into the forest, two pairs of eyes watched them with rapacious interest. The elves briefly rendezvoused in a small clearing nearby, then took flight, moving through the forest with ease. The two pairs of eyes began their pursuit, melding into the shadows. The forest proved no hindrance to their movement, their steps rapid and sure. One shadow moved low to the ground on all fours while the taller one ran on two legs.

Though the elves were slightly faster, the shadows were able to keep pace due to the taller one knowing every inch of the woods. As the elves flight snaked through the forest, the pair stayed with them by anticipating their route and taking the occasional shortcut. Their quarry doubled back several times to discourage pursuit, but were unable to spot the pursuers.

Once the elves reached their destination, the shadows took up position in a tree and began surveilling their encampment.

Kozah stared through the flames that raged around the group. " The fire is getting stronger he mumered in a deep thunderous voice" he then stepped back a step as the heat became increasingly overpowering. Having heard what the goblin had said he turned towrds the direction of the clrearing the humans were supposed to be gathered in.
"we finish this fight" he roared to those around him, and charged off through the non burning woods to arc around to the clearing.

Baruk watched as he went passed and then turned his gaze back to the fire. he then looked down at kili, and some of the other orcs, wounded and bleeding. "those who wish to go, may go with Kozah." he said flatly, as a few of the orcs filled with blood lust ran after the hulking minotaur. "you're not going?!" kili asked from her prone position.
"No, " he said bluntly, "I'm waiting for something else"....Baruk seemed to mutter the words as if expecting some great threat to appear. She didnt understand his reasoning, but she also knew not to question the chieftan. She watched him as he gazed through the fires, like he was looking at something specific.

The elves, having run a great distance, rested in a small area now and waited. "more will come" one of them spoke in elvish, "we didnt lose that many"...."did we?" spoke a younger female. "we should not have underestmated our foe, that tribe is stronger than it looks, and has powerful allies." another spoke up.
"yes, but your father is the one that sent us on a fools errand and almost to our deaths!!!!" the young female chimed back. "he makes deals with our blood to save his own!!!!"
She had drew her sword halfway almost expecting an attack from the older elf.

Grib snorted "I'm wounded my left arm is all tingly besides my fighting style more ambush trickery. Face to face fights with a bunch of pissed elves I be dead." He scratched his nose "I stay with the chief." He glances over at the raging fire "Maybe we used to much?"

Sikana smiled "Oh I do so love it when things get hot and bothered." She slithered after Kozah twirling that fighting spear in a frightening display. "Humans come out and Play!"

Faoreh took a position on Kozah's right, her bow still at the ready in case they encountered someone else on the way to the clearing.

Kevahl picked up the bolt Kili had bitten and placed it in the groove of his arbalest. "If we're expecting company, perhaps we should put out some surprises?"

Baruk nodded in agreement

Baruk nodded in agreement with kevahl. He knew he could count on the goblin to set up as many nasty surprises as possible. He never let his gaze fall from the woods, his instincts would'nt let it.

Kozah barreled into the clearing nearly trampling an injured human in the process. He swung his axe, in a wide arc more for intimidation than anything. Then brought it up and down into the ground. Trying to encite panic amongst already battered foes was his way of dealing with odds. The humans stepped back and raised thier sheilds. A few arrows came in at Kozah, but being rushed shots sailed harmlessy high. The human he had trampled, tried to crawl away, stunned, not realizing had he laid still , his chances would have been alot better. Kozah noticing the movemnt slightly behind him , spun and used the flat of his axe to completely crush the mans head like a fruit. Again, the strength display was for intimidation purposes.
Three of the seven orcs and 2 goblins that followed him attacked the humans on the left side of the gathered group. Two scored lethal hits, one was parried and even dropped by a quick counter strike. Kozah all out charged. There were 6 orcs, and two goblins, with him on one side, and his deadly companions on the other. There was a total of nearly 20 humans left, give or take. He wasnt able to get a completely accurate quick count withthem dodging in and out of the woods. The humans who he assumed would break and run, did not. They raised thier sheilds, and steadied to take the charge..

Faoreh loosed one arrow

Faoreh loosed one arrow toward the line of humans, then put away her bow and drew two spears as she charged forward at Kozah's right hand. She parried the weapon of one of the humans, then planted both front paws on the top edge of his shield. Whether the shield went down, or she went up, was irrelevant, she thrust down at the human's face with her other spear...

Kevahl called out to his squad, "Axes out! I need these trees trimmed, and the abatis in lines there, there, and there!" That would shield three sides of their position, with the rear and the front two corners open. He pulled out his Package of Surprises to prepare for anyone who came in those paths...

Grib went to work setting up

Grib went to work setting up a trap. He pulled a branch enough that it had some tension sharpened one or two off branches and dipped the now spikes into his poison. The trap was on a trip wire. Doing this as those with Axes took care of the trees. "Any Idea what we are preparing for? We already fought Elves and Humans, what's next Dwarves?" He shook his head "They set a trap that means they knew we were here. I don't like this. Or is it Kozah troops this trap was for? It smells like trouble to me."

He took out some small Caltrops along the paths. "So Cheif what are we waiting for?"

Baruk watched the goblins run

Baruk watched the goblins run about thier business, and was imprssed with thier preparations. He still said not a word yet, nor ever really removed his gaze from the wood. He sat pondering the questions coming at him, the finally said it, "do you not all feel that?" he pointed his spear towards an area of wood charred and blackened by flame. "something or someone watches us"....he lowered his spear to his side. "this all is not right"...meaning the whole ambush, "Elves bearing no markings, with humans doing the same."
He thought again for a moment. "I smell burnt flesh of elf, human, orc and goblin, " he continued, "blood of the same," he paused," and perfumes?".... he was having a hard time identifying the other odd smell with the fires and such, plus the concotions the goblins used to start such a thing. He quickly looked to grib, "Do you not smell it as well?"...he gazed back at the blackened area, "flowers?"......

The elves in the clearing seemed to be arguing about thier failure and who it was to blame. They had even drawn thier weapons as the heated exchange intensified. Then they went quiet, All of them turned one drection almost in unison, but too late, Three hooded figures cut them down faster then they could react. Standing over the last body one whispered something in an unknown language. The shadows in the tree were not spotted yet, but may be soon.......

The humans were not much of a fight even though thier numbers were superior. Faoreh was easily killing anything close to her, as Kozah just crushed opponent after opponent. Only one other goblin fell, and that only from a flesh wound to the leg that hobbled it. It seemed no matter how gruesome the death one of them witnessed, they still fought on, never waivering, or faultering any more.

After placing several traps -

After placing several traps - originally intended for wolves or bears by the human hunter who had placed his string without considering who might be watching him - Kevahl looked over the progress that had been made. An arc of trees shorn of smaller branches now provided much less cover to anyone approaching their position, and the branches made a low wall. He cocked his arbalest as he considered the smell of flowers Baruk had brought to his attention...

When Faoreh started having to look to see where she was needed most, she noted the lack of markings. Putting this together with their apparent discipline... "I want a prisoner!" Her shout rang through the clearing as she reversed her spears to use the hafts as clubs. Hopefully someone would be able to take one or more...

The shadows watched these

The shadows watched these newcomers with rapt interest. As they did, both of them registered a sweet scent. Some sort of perfume? A sudden memory almost caused the tall shadow to break cover as it recognized, but did not understand, the language. The tribe was in terrible danger!

Moving almost silently, they dropped out of the tree and began exfiltrating, retreating towards the Spear and Shield location. Once they were 30 yards away, the shadows stopped moving silently and turned to race towards the orcs.

Baruk caught sight of one of his most trusted leaders, charging towards him and he raced to meet his friend. he leaped over a trap and ducked below a high snare, (thankfully knowing they were there or hed been caught) He closed the distance and before he was face to face he said outloud "Is it them?"............"are they here now?".....He asked more concerned over a possible new threat.

Kozah just kept bashing and hacking away at the weaker enemies. He didn't even hear Foareh's comment untill she snuck a blow in on one of his opponents to knock the human to the ground, rendering it unconscious and out of the way of the heavey cleave of Kozah's axe.....He truned with an angry glare to see who dared take his kill, and then relaxed when he saw her. He knew she was doing it for a reason......The bloodlust faded from his eyes, and he turned to the group of orcs and goblins left circling the remaing few humans. "Get her as mant as she wants" he barked at them in the gutteral tongue.

The shadows skidded to a halt

The shadows skidded to a halt in front of Baruk. Sunlight filtered through the trees to reveal Grozz, the tribe's lead ranger, and his animal companion Senarra, a large black panther. Senarra jumped up into a tree and leapt from branch to branch, stalking through the thick canopy until she was over Grib. She settled into a laying position and let loose a throaty chirp that descended into a low grumble. Grib was her favorite 'prey' to track because he was so good at hiding that she often had to work to find him.

Grozz caught his breath, then stood up straight. "I tracked the elves back to their encampment, where they began arguing amongst themselves and nearly came to blows over their disagreement. But then they were ambushed by dark hooded figures. I did not see the figures for their cloaks, but they were speaking the language of the dark elves. I saw three, but it is doubtful that is all of them. They slaughtered a numerically superior force in a matter of seconds. It is my strong recommendation that we do not attempt to fight them."

"I'm a bloody cave goblin I'm not cut out for this woods stuff. Give me damp tunnels, tight spaces and no light I be happy. Out here everything smells funny. Smelly elves, smelly humans, smelly trees, smelly flowers, really almost everything smells strange to me." That was when he heard the throaty chirp and spun eyeing the cat. This time he wasn't hiding having been working on the traps and preparing to fight whatever.

"Grozz, your beast giving me that look again!"

Baruk nodded in agreement to Grozz. He trusted his opinion, and knew also they were a wounded and damaged fighting force. "we head home" he said flatly. He then turned and headed back to the rest of the group . When he arrived he made a simple few gestures in the air with his spear and everyone immediately started readying to head back to thier cave. Baruk approached gribb and said, "be hidden, but search as many as you can before the drow come. Follow up home after.," He knew gribb was the one to search for as many odd little clues as he could in the short period of time. After saying that to Gribb, Baruk walked over to one of the bodies of an elf he slayed and took its coin purse. He looked over at grozz and tossed it to him. He always tried to show his respect to those who helped the tribe. Even though Grozz missed the battle, what he did was way more important to the tribe. Baruk saw he was rewarded. He also took the light elven blade and gestured to Grozz that it was his if he wanted it. He stuck it on his back, as time was of the essence. He then turned to Kevahl "look after gribb" is all he said. Then he helped KIli to her feet and leaned her on another orc and sent them towards home. "Ill go to Kozah"....he stated as he headed off to the clearing.

Grozz caught the pouch and

Grozz caught the pouch and dumped it into his pack, then walked in Grib and Senarra's direction. "She likes you. I can't understand why, though."

Senarra chirped again and hoped down to walk with Grozz to where Yzark was laying with a severe sword wound to his leg. Senarra sniffed at the wound, then bounded off into the woods. Grozz pulled bandages from his pack along with a small leather bladder. He gave Yzark the bladder. "Two swallows."

Yzark did so, coughing a bit as the potent moonshine burned its way down his throat, then handed the bladder back. Grozz wet a layer of bandages with the moonshine just as Senarra returned with a forla fruit. Grozz took the fruit and thanked her with a head rub, then sliced up the fruit and laid it across the wound, wrapping it with the wet bandages. He reached over Yzark's shoulder and grabbed several waxen burla leaves for use as insulation between the wet and dry bandages. Once he was done wrapping the wound, he helped Yzark stand. "Stop getting hurt, you old fart."

Yzark responded to the affectionate jibe with a punch to Grozz's arm that nearly unbalanced him. "I'll stop diving into the worst of the fight when you stop playing in the woods, stripling." he responded before hobbling off in the direction of the rest of the war party. Trusting Grib not to make new tracks, Grozz followed the party at a short distance and disguised their trail, Senarra stalking above him in the trees.

The group shambled and

The group shambled and hobbled its way back towards thier cave, thier progression was slow as they carried thier wounded. Most orc tribes would just leave them, but not thiers. Baruk and his closest friends/advisors, always felt the tribe bonds grow stronger by aiding one another, than abandoning. this has hepled this smaller tribe stay strong. They have been able to face adversaries that other tribes would flee from. Knowing the one who has your back isnt going to run away from cowardice lends its strength in combat.

Baruk approached Kozah and his allies in the clearing. The sight was one of utter slaughter. The humans who stood and fought , did so what appeared to be with little effort or strategy. Three lay unconscious at one of Kozah's companions feet, The feline one, and the rest lay where they fell. Only two of Baruks tribe were down, the goblin that was killed, and an orc wounded. "Good fight" Baruk said for all to hear. He knew Kozah and his friends didnt need any reassurances, thier strength was obvious, it was more for his tribal members that held without breaking under great duress and outnumbered initially. His words added strength to the orcs and goblins that chose his tribe to call home. He then turned to Faroeh, " all three?" he asked simply to see how many of the unconcious ones she wanted them to bring back.

Kevahl considered recovering

Kevahl considered recovering his traps, then decided against it. He scanned the area while Gribb checked the bodies of the fallen.

Faoreh nodded. "They fight like soldiers, but are not dressed like soldiers. One of them will tell me why..." Her grin revealed teeth that seemed much more like a cat's than a human's as she picked one up and carried him over her shoulder.

Seeing Faoreh pick up one, Baruk orderd two of his orcs to carry the other two. Hopefully they will get more information back home. Then he turned to Faoreh and said, "the drow have been spotted nearby" Then he turned and followed his orcs, making sure all his clan was accounted for, except the few he had left for various reasons. Kozah had heard the word drow, and began to snarl. He hated them for enslaving alot of his kin. "shall we look for the dark elves?" he asked bluntly of his friend. He knew they were wiser than he and that sometimes his bloodlust ran his mind. He also learned from his companins that the best way isnt always the bloodiest. He was hoping Faoreh and Sikana would decide wether to look for the drow or follow Baruk and his tribe back to thier lair.

When arriving at thier cave

When arriving at thier cave homestead, Baruk starting doing a head count. He wanted to see how costly this battle was, victory or not. He then checked on kili, and a few others, then went and stood by the entrance. "Always looking out for us" kili said to the younger orc helping her tend to her wounds. Most orc tribes don't tend each others wounds, or support each other like the way this one does.
Baruk waited to see if Kozah and his allies were coming back now, and waited to see what Grib and Kevahl would loot or discover from thier quick searches. He was also looking around for Grozz. He needed more information about the drow, and wondered what his trusted ranger friend would have to say.

"Yes, yes I agree. Besides Surface elves bad enough, drow worst." He said coming to the group with a few items. "Not sure if it's important stuff or not. Very strange like they didn't want any identification at all. So sneaky rules applies, common things not always common in different areas. Coins for one land are rare in others. Maybe Humans are to dumb to think of that. But it be better to look through the loot away from beings wanting to stick pointy things in our bodies."

Kozah arrived at the cave

Kozah arrived at the cave with his allies followed by the goblins. As soon as he did, Baruk met them. "Good battle today," Kozah said first..."more like that soon i hope"....Baruk tried to grin in appreciation for what his friend had helped the tribe do, but his thoughts were going to the odd fact that the underground dweling drow, were there. "why the dark elves appeared is what we need to find out"...he said aloud. "Gribb, show me what you found!" he shouted looking around for the little goblin. He then turned to Faoreh, and asked "what information can they provide?" geturing towards thier three captives......he was asking hoping she had already learned something from them.

"This one," Faoreh replied as she pointed to the sole conscious captive, "is a mercenary, with no loyalty to his employer, an 'ahreeyemeff' called Archbold, but some to his comrades. He offers to tell all he knows of this Archbold in exchange for either release or employment of himself and his comrades."

As she said this, Kevahl and Gribb were just walking into hearing range. Those watching his approach might notice his ears prick and his face grow hard at the mention of Archbold...

Grozz and Senarra emerged

Grozz and Senarra emerged from the woods at another point and ambled towards the cave entrance. As he approached, Baruk waved him over. Grozz altered his path and stopped near Baruk. "Yeah?"

Senarra continued on into the cave, sniffing at anything new. She stopped outside of a bungalow and chirped, then bounded up to a ledge that formed the roof of the bungalow. She flopped down onto her side, head and paw over the edge, then yawned mightily.

As she finished, the bungalows curtain parted and Julia emerged. She straightened and turned, then reached out to scratch between Senarra's ears. The panther began rumbling in response, her eyes closing in contentment.

Grib tossed his bag of items. "Look over yourself." He turned and headed to the deeper part of the cavern. It would be strange for him to just hand things over. The reason was he was thinking. Drow means passage into underdark...home.

Baruk grabbed the bag of coins and trinkets Gribb managed to gather before leaving the batle scene. He quickly glanced inside and grabbed a small item out. It was just a Gem, he quickly pocketed it and then started to look more intently at each particular item. Mostly coins and shiny stuff. Nothing stood out directly as odd. He then handed the bag off to another orc nearby and ordered him take it back to gribb. "Make sure he gets it all" baruk ordered, " he then can do what he wants with it." As he said that he turned to Grozz who had joined him. "These drow worry me my friend"....he paused to read Grozzs facial expression.."They don't fight in the day" he more of asked than stated looking for assurances from Grozz that he was on the same thought pattern. "Can you scout out the area?" he looked back into the wood, "Maybe get answers"....he iknew if Baruk himself went with Grozz, it wouldn't be a very quiet scouting party. "Take who you will need with you"......

Kozah listened to how the captives were described. He snorted and stomped somewhat when he realized they were nothing but scum. "No honor" he said aloud.
As he glared in, even reacjhing for his axe, Baruk stopped him having come over from the entrance. "we need information" is all he said as his hand held Kozah's muscular, powerful arm tight. "can you get any more?" he asked hoping to get more answers to the swirling questions in his head.

Faoreh looked from Baruk to Kozah and asked, "Do I have a free hand?" She didn't agree with Kozah's assessment; these were a company of mercenaries, not freelancers, their honor was easy to understand. Just substitute "captain" and "company" for "chief" and "tribe" or "king" and "nation". Their commander may have had an agreement with this Archbold person, but he was apparently dead... Regardless, all the tribe she had was in Kozah's band, and if he or their allies needed information, she would do her best to get it.

"yes" is all Baruk said "we need it".....He looked at Faoreh and understood her reasoning. Kozah, however would sooner slaughter them out of disdain, than get the information needed. However if there is one thing Kozah knew, it was that Faoreh was to be trusted, her logic , methods and reasons had always proved themselves time and again. He then glanced at the captured human that was the most injured and barely conscious. "Do we need all of them?" he asked bluntly.." I'm hungry".........

"If you wanted a snack, there were plenty back there to grab." Faoreh replied in the Common tongue, then looked at the one she'd been questioning already and continued, "But if it turns out I'm wrong about which way gets us the most accurate information, then there may be a dead one or two before I'm done." The two most aware of the prisoners blanched a bit, then swallowed.

Faoreh went through the pile of gear that had been stripped from the mercenaries, pulling out four knives and a few bits of clothing. She set these on the ground, in plain view. "Here's the deal: I will ask questions. You will answer as truthfully and as completely as you can. If I smell a lie, you'll get a warning. If I smell a second, I offer one of your friends the same deal, and Kozah will have lunch. When I am satisfied I've learned all I am going to, those of you who are not already snacks will take these rags and one knife apiece and leave.

"So, let us begin: Describe this Archbold, and what he wanted your band to do." The first mercenary began talking. Kevahl moved forward, listening for any discrepancies between what this human was saying and what he knew already knew of the Goblin King, from the Tribe's dealings with his "kingdom" deep in the caves where they had settled...

Grozz nodded at the instructions and looked out over the expanse of the large cave. "Grib, Kevahl, on me." he called out.

He then whistled and, deeper in the cave, Senarra's ears perked up. She sulked for a few moments since Julia was in the process of putting a light sear on a venison steak for her. Grozz's whistle sounded again and Senarra hissed briefly. But she got up and hopped down from the roof, stopping to rub her big head along Julia's arm, nearly unbalancing the woman. "Go on. I'll bring it to you before you leave." Julia said.

Senarra, seeming to understand, loped off towards the front of the cave. Grozz was just about to whistle again when she appeared from the crowd. She circled him and rubbed her head against his thigh, then sat down next to him.

Grozz suppressed the urge to

Grozz suppressed the urge to cuff Grib and crouched down to be on the shorter goblin's level. "Baruk wants to know more about the drow. Find out if they've got plans or if they were just an elf-hunting party. I want to keep the group small and I wanted the tribe's most sneaky. That's me and the two of you."

Senarra yowled lowly at that and bumped him hard in the ribs. "Alright, alright. You too."

"I'm pretty sneaky too, y'know." a female voice answered from a couple yards behind Grib and Kevahl. Grozz looked up and locked eyes with Julia, his mother. He couldn't help but notice that she was in her leather breastplate and combat skirt, as well as her daggers. "Absolutely not. You are not coming."

"Relax, son. The gossip around the cave is that there's trouble lurking about. Figured I'd help the guards out. I also had to bring Senarra her steak." Julia reassured him while beckoning to the big cat. Senarra looked up at Grozz with huge pitiful eyes and he nodded. She was at Julia's side in the blink of an eye, purring and stropping like mad. Julia laughed and set a reinforced leather bowl on the ground, wherein lay a pile of venison steak chunks. Senarra dug in immediately.

"Now, give me a hug." Julia practically ordered him. Grozz strode over and pulled her into a strong embrace.

"Stay safe out there." she said, before departing. Grozz turned back to the goblins. "Have either of you encountered Drow before?"

He turned and got his things grimacing a bit at his shoulder. Applying some healing rub on the wounded muscle he came back hearing Grozz ask about Drow.

"I be cave Goblin. Know much about Drow, most warnings about staying away. They don't send out hunting parties, one or two outcasts or those that been disgraced and are trying to prove themselves are sent out but not parties. If they want humans or elves for something they force lesser races out to stir trouble. Get some brave Heroes to come to the caverns to tend to the goblin threats... then ambush them. Sneaky as hell. Sneaking, murder, and poisons are worshiped not just practiced. If Drow are active above ground it's big."

Baruk saw the trio quietly

Baruk saw the trio quietly talking amongst themselves before they left. He gave each one a reassuring nod and salute. He knew whatever was afoot could put the whole tribe at risk. He hoped for more information, then he'd try to figure out the best course of action for the tribe. He knew having Kozah and his allies here was a bonus, but still.. how much more could the tribe endure? As he turned and headed over to where Faoreh was 'questioning' the captives, he started to become more enraged. By the time he go to her he was snarling and extremely mad.."What did they have to say?!!" he roared facing the captives......all anger and frustration directed solely at the humans...

Faoreh indicated the second

Faoreh indicated the second-least wounded of the captives. "We are fortunate that Charl, here, was present at the meeting with King Archbold's agent. According to him, the contract was for their company to meet with the Drow at a certain spot and 'provide support' for up to fourteen days. At the end of that time, or when the Drow said they weren't needed anymore, they were to send someone to another spot, not too far from here, as it turns out, to meet the agent again with a full report on what, specifically, the Drow used them for and anything they might have found out about the Drow's plans. The other prisoners seemed somewhat surprised about that last part, their captain didn't spread that word around very widely. Also of note, is that the Drow were somewhat concerned about the hiring of mostly human mercenaries."

His ear swiveled hearing

His ear swiveled hearing Faoreh looking over "If the mercenaries were in league with the Drow... perhaps we could send one of our Human tribe members to the nearby human settlements. Some story of seeing a group of bandits and drow. Hmm No that won't work no one would believe a Drow let someone walk away. Maybe a mix of truth in the tale that they saw a fight with bandits, Drow, and some Orcs. Make it clear the Drow were working with the humans."

He scratched his chin "What the flok are Drow doing working with humans in the first place?"

"drow hired humans?...maybe

"drow hired humans?...maybe because they can't stay up here too long" Baruk thought aloud. His anger was waining and his thoughts turned to more of curiosity concern. "So this goblin king is the one we should really be talking to"....he continued.
He stared into the cave, deep into it. He knew there was a lair of goblins that he traded with and worked with as well. He never thought of them as a threat in any way however. Now his thoughts started to shift. With kevahl and Grib out with Grozz, he needed to send someone else. Perhaps not the best idea to send goblins to talk to goblins. A show of strength is what was needed. He stared at Kozah and his allies and smiled....

Out of the cave, the trails and paths the tribal members knew of were quiet and unused. that was odd at this time, knowing the big fish carts should be moving thier wares. That was one of the reasons Baruk and the others had ventured out prior to the battle. They knew the boats were in, the seasonal catch of fish on the great lake was a huge business for the local towns. Baruk traded, raided, amongst other things all the time. He was smart enough to only take what was needed, and never do as much damage to be perceived a huge threat. They even went as far as to spare the lives of the locals for the same reason. (sometimes) However this day the carts were gone. none to be seen anywhere. Grozz, Grib, and Kevahl, would only see tracks, and footprints. Most seemingly leading off in one particular direction, back towards the beach.

Once they were ready, Grozz

Once they were ready, Grozz and his small party had set off. The ranger led them through the trees almost silently, eschewing the various trails and paths that crisscrossed through the forest. Grozz and Senarra both moved with a light sure-footedness that bordered on uncanny, none of the vegetation offering any sort of impediment.

It wasn't long before the keen eyes, ears, and noses of both hunters began picking up on clues. Light impressions in the dirt, snapped twigs, broken branches, small bits of torn cloth. One or more people had beat a hasty path towards the beach.

Once Grozz had determined a direction to go, he stopped and made a subtle motion at Senarra. She skulked off into the trees, her dark coat vanishing almost instantly into the thick undergrowth. He waited a minute, sniffing at the air and looking around, then turned back to look along the path they had followed. "You can come out now, mother."

At the exact moment he said that, Senarra reared up and swatted Julia on her hind end, her claws sheathed. Julia almost screamed but muffled it by biting her lip. She glared at Senarra, who simply cocked her head and chirped quietly. Pouting, Julia came out from behind the tree she was hiding behind and stole up to join the group. "I'm not going back." she said softly, but emphatically.

Grozz nodded. "I know. I wouldn't send you back. Not alone with Drow in the forest."

He then looked around at the rest of the party. "I want a wedge. I'll be at the front. Kevahl and mother flanking me by 3 steps, then Grib and Senarra flanking them by 2 steps. All of you are familiar with the signals. Sound off if you spot anything out of the ordinary, I don't care how insignificant. Let's go."

The party set off towards the beach.

The scene unfolding as the

The scene unfolding as the group made thier way towards the beach was one of utter decimation. The trails that were somewhat hard to find at first became easier up to the point of being obvious an army was here. The beach itself was littered with corpses, and carts debris lay destroyed and scattered. The water washing up was tinted red and out in the surf, ships lay beached and broken. Arrows were everywhere, and the eerie silence of death was only broken by the caw of the scavengers and sound of the tide. The fishermen were wiped out and the few soldiers Grozz recognized as part of the fishermen guard, were not only killed, but butchered. The odd dead that stood out of place (only two would be found throught the entire field) were armed with crude weapons, and skins and leathers as thier armor. thier skin was painted different colors, one all red with black streaks, the other green and yellow. They wore animal headresses covering thier entire face but appeared to be human.

Faoreh returned the smile.

Faoreh returned the smile. "You want us to talk to the Goblin King? Politely, or not-so-politely? Maybe we meet with his Agent at the tree growing from the boulder, he leads us in..." She realized a possible reason Baruk had stared at the cave. "Or do you already know a way in?"
****************************************
"These guys are new to me," commented Kevahl as he toed the mask off of the red-and-black painted human. "Humans, but not from any group I've heard about. Wonder where they came from, and did they die fighting the fisher folk or the Drow? Those were Drow tracks we followed here, right?"

"I say those odd ones are dark magic worshipers. Some tribe or clan using dark magics or even a dark god. Use of dark powers would account for all the other dead and only these two being not of the same group. These two are low rank they have lousy weapons and left to rot. Higher ranking wouldn't be left or at least have weapons worth keeping."

Grozz studied the carnage.

Grozz studied the carnage. "Difficult to tell who the tracks belonged to. But from what I know of them, Drow are very good at moving lightly, so it's possible. Spread out and look for clues. But don't touch anything with bare skin. As Grib said, the Drow are adept poisoners."

Grozz and Senarra headed for the boats, forging through the incoming surf. Senarra, unlike many cats both large and small, loved water. She frolicked with and batted at the waves, then dove under as they reached the side of the nearest boat. She surfaced explosively and leapt aboard, followed more slowly by Grozz.

As Grozz and Senarra checked the ships, Julia headed for the greatest concentration of carts. She pulled on a thin pair of leather gloves as she walked, then looked back to see if either of the goblins had followed her.

Kevahl was just to her left,

Kevahl was just to her left, watching the ground for tripwires or other traps as they moved. He had slung his arbalest and gotten his packet of tools out; if this was an ordinary ambush they would surely have struck already. Probably. Maybe. But it was certainly more likely now that any traps would be a mechanism or magic triggered directly by the scouts' own actions, rather than lurkers waiting to strike. Unless they were waiting for the mechanism or magic trap to take effect, or for the scouts to get close enough to the carts... As they got nearer to the carts, he started looking underneath and around the carts, both for traps and signs of people hiding.

Grib knelt down near another

Grib knelt down near another body. What he was looking for was the wounds. From personal experience he knew Drow preferred fast thin weapons, the type that cut and slash. Humans on the other hand at least most of the ones he seen here used swords that are more chop and crush. If Drow were here some of the wounds would be that cut slashing type wounds, discoloring at the wound edge could also give him clues like if poison was used. He was also looking for bodies that might have been high ranking among the dead. Like Kevahl he was careful expecting traps. Eyes were taking in the armor and weapons of the other dead. Quality of weapons and armor could give light as of who they were. The weapon types also could point to a mercenary group or recrutes. Grib knew humans who aren't training to fight would be armed with spears or pike weapons where professional fighters would use swords.

He was also on alert for sounds of anyone approaching. Not for ambushes like Kevahl he figured they weren't coming. Human scouts and look outs coming to find out what happened to this group was now on his mind. He had no desire to be confused as a member of the Black streaks group. Well that what he was mentally calling the group with the black streaks.

Not to mention he was eyeing anything he could swipe for himself.

Aboard the grounded listing

Aboard the grounded listing ship, the scene matched the one at the beach. Bodies lay smashed and broken, and the blood made the walking on the tilted deck slick. The bodies strewn about were of sailors and a fisherman. A few heavily armored men were laying about as well. They all died the same way, nearly butchered by crude weapons.

On the beach the deaths were the same. The crude weapons were used to great effect. The bodies of those who appeared to fight were butchered almost beyond recognition. Alot of the fishermen were killed by fatal blows from behind. Not a single one was spared, man woman, child, human, dwarf, elf, even the few half orcs amongst the group were all slaughtered and butchered. Signs of repeated blows after they fell were obvious.

The carts were smashed and broken and thier content littered the ground. Coins could be seen bleeding out of a smashed chest, and other foods were being eaten by the scavengers that werent feasting on the bounty of corpses. The scene was just one of utter destruction. Nothing survived the onslaught.

Amid the chaos and death however, tracks could be found (assuming a ranger would see them) under the corpses leading off into the wooded section opposite from where the group came. there were many, and all different weights and sizes..........

Grozz whistled to get everyone's attention, then gave the signal to group back up. He hopped over the rail and splashed back into the surf, letting the waves push him closer to the beach. Once he found his footing, he slogged ashore and moved towards the others.

Grib headed for Grozz "Looks like ambush many fighters. Crude weapons judging by damage done, don't look like Drow were active in this. Followers maybe, no sign of magic being used in this attack." Not seeing signs of magic he did pick up a few things some random coins and other trinkets.

"Not typical raiders or bandits. Left to many good loot. I say it's start of a war." He motioned to the bodies about "A big war. The attackers have enough backing to not take prisoners for slave labor."

Kevahl shook his head sadly.

Kevahl shook his head sadly. He could understand a poor tribe raiding its neighbors for things they needed to survive; the Spear & Shield Tribe weren't all that rich themselves. But this... "Not only that, but they didn't take all the food, steal the money and tools, maybe they took a little, but not enough for that to be their goal. This was a raid of killing and destruction. I'm not sure what they got out of it, favor of their deities, maybe. But what they're going to get is some nation pissed off at them. And if all they have is sneakiness and chipped stone, that ain't gonna be enough."

As the small group went over

As the small group went over what happened on the beach, a shrill scream echoed off in the distance, coming from the treeline the tracks led to. It was short but loud.
