In game diary and scheduler

Hey guys, not sure if this has ever been mentioned on here or discussed as an idea for the design.

My thoughts go something like this.

In CoX if there was a trial, event, or a raid happening within an sg, the community or a server you pretty much had to check external websites, be around in chat when it was mentioned or be a real life friend of someone who was attending and knew about it.

I was thinking perhaps there could be an actual message board in game either through the options section, or physical place in game like the town hall, where a player could review a diary of planned event they could attend. Let's say theres a big raid on x server of the top level boss, I click Attending with my toon, or write in the toon I am going with. It updates and lists me as going, and then it also sends me a reminder when the event is taking place when in game and to my external user account when the event is drawing close.

This would serve as a tool for people who get sidetracked in the game, and as a place where events could be tracked and created by the community.

Might be a terrible idea, and could probably be improved on or ignored :)

Anyway just a thought.

That is certainly an interesting idea, although it would be a right headache to manage a set of checks and balances that keeps such a calendar useful without allowing people to put all kinds of random crap up on it. Perhaps one approach would be to give everyone a calendar on which events can be set with different permissions, and anything with a public setting (e.g. Earthguard is planning a raid on the pizza parlour on the corner of Elmwood and Townline) could be viewed on that public calendar.

I always rather liked the calendar in WoW because it allowed me to see upcoming events, even if I rarely bothered much with them.

I like the sound of this, especially if it had a search function or, better yet, an alert system where you could tag certain events you were interested in. Something like this would have helped me get some of those hard-to-get, organised-team-required badges I never got in CoX.

Spurn all ye kindle.

Likewise. I never did get to go on a Hami Raid. :( The SG's I belonged to just didn't seem to be large or active enough. And if you didn't get an invite from someone you knew, well...it was just hard to try and do that as a PuG.

I like the WoW/Eve Online style calenders as well.

This reminds me of the setup that the protagonist returns to in Michael Stackpole's novel In Hero Years... I'm Dead, where the villains would put up an announcement that they planned to pull a caper, giving details about when and where, and the heroes would bid for the task of stopping them (and could subcontract, say, the inside work to another hero); there was a fantasy-football-like 'Superfriends' league where points were awarded based on the relative power of the hero and villain, their records, and the like.

Thinking about it, it occurs to me that something similar might be an entertaining way to set up PvP encounters; a villain or group of villains pick a target from a list of available targets and have the option of spending inf to hire henchmen, then the announcement goes up on a 'Caper Board; the heroes can browse the Board and, either singly or as a team, bid to be the opposition, and the battle would be fought using some loose equivalent of the GM code to prevent 'level 50 vs. level 1' curbstomps. There would need to be some sort of handicapping for the reward -- a pair of level-30 heroes defeating a lone level-25 villain would earn them less reputation than the villain would get if they managed to defeat the pair of heroes, for example.

How about you go to City Hall

How about you go to City Hall or whatever and there's a calendar you can click on that will show things people have planned, such as task forces, raids, parties at the Naughty Corner, etc?

That sounds like it'd be quite useful. Especially if we could use it for player run events.

You could present it in story as a real world location such as a billboard, but act as if it's 'online' to justify being able to use it from anywhere, if you wanted.

This sounds like a useful bit to add with a really nice return in terms of player convenience. Especially if you could write a few words on your particular event so players know what it is past the initial basic information. (Say, if you wanted to use it to put together a task force of all of one particular type of class.)

When I played WOW I played a Troll Fortune Teller. I used a Mod that allowed me to make notes and info for my fortunes. To do the same thing again I would have all that fortune teller info somewhere else slowing down my fortune teller system. I would love to see an application much like that Mod I used..

Ya, I was thinking of it being for player created events, and your idea about the line or two describing the event would be a must!

I see what you mean about being able to access it anywhere, like usin a smartphone or such, but I kinda liked having things like this be a natural social hub to run into peeps. Maybe have a bunch of the terminals or whatever scattered around so that no one would have to travel TOO far to get to one.

How about a toss up. You can see what's on the calender anywhere even confirm you joining an activity. To Enter an Activity means going to a Hub.

Not a bad Idea, especially if it was in quite a few places in-game. If it's in just a couple or three places, it would start to turn people away because it would get far too crowded and you'd not be able to see the Calendar to access it. (Constant player clicking instead of calendar clicking).

For that, an external app or alternate method of access would be a benefit more than a hindrance. A social hub is nice until it becomes a mob standing around blocking traffic.

o.O Did it all the time as what was basically a PuG all the time on Virtue. Usually just took one person who knew what they were doing to spam messages. I always wound up on random teams as well, since my SG wasn't into running HamiRaids either. :(

To bad to, because it had enough people in it at the time to fill an instance of it!

I think that that falls into the case of "being in the right place at the right time" as well as knowing the right people (or the right people knowing you).

Also there is the case that maybe they were not necessarily a member of the "right channels" where stuff got spammed. Who knows. I have seen people hit just one global channel and ignore others that they are a member of.

There has been some

There has been some consideration of a equivalent to a live twitter feed/scrolling chyron for zone events and other related issues. It's not been seriously dealt with for the moment until we get the game more operational.

We understand that a lot of these QoL things have to go into a box marked 'Open once we make sure the game works'. Personally, just seeing a Dev posting here occasionally lets me know you guys see this stuff. No, we can't have the moon and the stars at launch but it's nice to be considered

Well... to be honest i would

Well... to be honest i would like a hyperlink type of feature added to the chat text, where an SG or other Coalition member posts an Event Announcement and when i see it (or look it up in the SG Events Panel or window) i can decide if i want to attend, and left click on the event hyperlink in the chat panel... and that event gets added to my Event Schedule, which can be set to remind me of the event based on the reminder settings i chose. ;)

Or throw just enough art resources at it to have a placeholder. Look at the City Info Terminals that were scattered across Paragon City; for a while, they would display various status on character performance, until that broke. Planning for city information services to the extent of having the information kiosks built into the city design, rather than added later as an afterthought; at launch, they're static environment objects. Later, when the resources become available, their functionality can be defined, with the functionality expanded over time.

Of course, taking technological advances into account, you could simply handwave that everyone has a mobile device that can link to a citywide information network that provides these functions, so all you'd need to do is create a 'power' that everyone got that, when activated, opened an interface to the system, and an animation for what a character would look like while they were reading 'HeroNet'.
