Now that I have your attention... *clears throat*
I realize that the announcement was just made about what the city's football team would be called, but I would like to suggest a minor alteration.
Instead of calling the team The Titan City Captains and the mascot being Captain Corsair, I have a slight modification in mind. The reason I feel that this is a good idea is that any sailor worth their salt knows that there can only be ONE captain. To have a full team of "Captains" is just asking for trouble. Like too many cooks in the kitchen, y'know?
Bear in mind that the previous paragraph is coming forth from the fervent imagination of a hardcore roleplayer stricken with terminal altitis, so my natural instinct is to look at it from a roleplay standpoint. Anyways...
I think the Titan City Corsairs would be a much better team name, and then the mascot would just be The Captain. The cheerleaders would stay the Wenchettes (or Wenches) and the fans would be The Crew.
Anywho, that's my 2 cents on that subject. Keep up the awesome work, Devs!
Putting yourself in another persons shoes emotionally is something that everyone has to experience eventually. It's part of learning to be a human being. Roleplayers do it for fun.
Calling a team the Captains seems bad to me too, but there's precedent in pro sports for this sort of thing. The Sacramento Kings and Kansas City Chiefs being prime examples.
R.S.O. of Phoenix Rising
All this and no Cabin Boys? Just when I thought one couldn't get any more sexist than 'Wenchettes'. >.>
Perhaps the devs figured the pirate theme was sufficiently served with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders? The team might well have started as the Titan City Corsairs but, with the aether pirates becoming / being a thing, they decided to rename them the Captains, after their (now former) mascot.
Now we need to determine how rum and limes figure into things.

First time I ever saw an entire railway carriage crack up laughing at the same time was when some random businessman in a suit had that theme tune come up very loud as his ringtone.

Shucks... didn't see this thread when I posted mine over in the General Discussion.

I wonder if the devs can merge threads?
Edit:
Nevermind... just gonna merge them myself.
....And I quote:
So... this is a thread about the Kickstarter update:

Firstly, Go Captains!
Secondly..... Captains? Why?
Titan City Captains? I don't get it.
I don't understand why they're the picked on team.... why they're stigmatized into not being allowed to win...
the rules of the game don't change. and just like in the real world, the players on the team are NOT representative of the city they're in.
They're just a team. they have a budget, they hire what players they can.
It would be a LOT more likely that other teams would be unwilling to come to Titan City, and risk running into a villain attack (pehaps that has actually happened before.. ala Dark Knight Rises)
And, as such, if we're going to pretend that TC exists in the real world, and that these Captains need a reason not to appear at the Superbowl..... Make a new league....
a league with different rules that are more accommodating to more than normal humans...
Then The Captains can be "the best in their league" (after all, they are the mecca of Super types)... since most other markets don't have a whole lot of meta human pull.
And, to that end... I once again would like to suggest that there be two teams in Titan City.... a "North Bay" team, that gets all the press and publicity (New York Yankees) and a "South Bay" team that almost always loses to their northern cousins, but are fiercely loved by locals and those who root for underdogs (New York Mets)
I do wish I could "Get" the choice for the team name, The Captains. I mean, I know the devs could just come up with some reason why they got the name.... but.... I donno.
...I guess I just wish the name reflected the history of the city, or the game...
Call them the "Ozzies" (honoring Oswald Lawrence) or the "Paragons" (like the city ;))..... heck even just the "Heroes"..... ya know?
And then, make the South side team be more blue collar... the kind of guys who's pride the Gabby Cabbie would fight some north bay lawyer over:
"The Ironmen" (straight out of Ironport)
or
"The Steevers" (shot for Stevedores)
give us some cross town rivalry we can actually root for IN game.... not just an excuse to put blue and gold on some NPCs.... but a way to tell what part of town your in, just BY those blue and gold jerseys....

and, in response to the OP..... Corsairs are Mediterranean pirates..... I just don't "get" the connection. I don't "get" any of it.
I think we agree that something as "thematic" as a Sports team should be viewed through the eyes of setting and "roleplaying"...
and, from that perspective...
I feel like our team needs a name like the "Packers," "Steelers," or "Jets"..... rather than The "Titans" or "Rams"
i.e. the team should feel rooted in the past, in the history of the city itself, rather than just being some theme made up by a marketing team to sell tickets.

Trinkets! Don't forget the Trinkets. Sports teams sell trinkets.

My vote still goes to the Titan City Meerkats.
I disagree.
The individual players on the team are "captains" and the leaders of the team on the field on offense, defense and special teams are "commodores" and the coaching staff are the "admirals" ... and the trainers are "shipmates" and the water carriers are ... "cabin boys" (even if they're girls). Team franchise is owned by the city (like the Green Bay Packers), so you don't wind up with a Jerry Jones type grade A1 wad of jerk (who in game terms would be classified as a Villain rather than a Hero).
Next non-problem.
