Event databases-Smartphones
Prologue
I remember fondly of the days where you could be in an active super group and not even know that an
event such as a raid, task force, mission arc, etc was taking place at any time of any day. It was almost like you
had to be omnicient or very tight knit to certain people to take part in a event. This might not speak for everyone in
the game, but for a new person that is just joining the game, not knowing what events are available and when they
are happening could be the determining factor of them playing and not. This is why I suggest there to be an event
data that can be implemented through the use of smartphones(in game) and a couple main hubs in social
areas(such as Phoenix Plaza).
Chapter 1
Everything from fighting minions on the street to player versus player battles(PVP) to all day task forces
can be defined as an event. To some people, each one of these events are an exclusive event, and that is perfectly
okay but it shouldn’t have to be as daunting a task as searching and getting a new job, or getting teeth pulled to get
a team doing the event that you are interested in. This is where the event database will come in.
The event database can be used for a vast majority of options. It can be posted on walls of the big
social hubs(such as the Phoenix Plaza). Once clicked, the database will open to all sorts of postings from both
new and veteran players about openings on teams, challenges to PVP battles, costume contests(CC) and when
they are happening, and requests for help with missions or just general knowledge. A character can access this
same information and upload, make memos, and save events to their calender that will alert their Smartphones
both in the game AND the real world if they so choose. This will help new players to more easily get accustomed
to what events are available and will in a roundabout sort of way keep them playing the game.
In the real world, your Android or iPhone app can have access to this same real time information as well. This
real world and in-game link would be amazingly helpful and would allow people to send out text messages while
in a mission/TF to ask for assistance or post openings to the team.
Chapter 2
Super groups could make amazing use of this feature. Having a hub in a super group base would allow the
leaders to post any on-going plans, changes, and updates for all members to see anytime of the day. The hub
can also be used to set up routine or one time meetings with certain ranks or all members. The leader of the
super group would have final control over the hub as to remove or add whatever he or she pleases. Any text
message from the app can be chosen to go out to Super Group members or coalition members for important
information or just in request of assistance.
On the game phone, you could have several apps, such as Worldwide Super Web where you would view all
general information, a “super group’s name here” app, and you could go even further and have a clothing/weapon
app where you could purchase new items. (Another app idea would be enhancements/inspirations.) Because you
would get alerted of updates through your characters smartphone you will always know what members are doing
and what you can get involved with.
Chapter 3
The event database could not only be postings, but a place where bugs that have been found can be
reported, it could also be used as a voting system where players can put up an idea that they think could better the
game. This style of polling would be a great way to get players input on how Developers ideas are being executed.
For example, A player will open a poll about how they think a statue(or anything really) in the game is offensive for
whatever reason, and it goes through the preliminary round of votes from fellow team members, and if it gets a
certain viable amount of Yay to Nay votes, it goes to the next level which could be the Dev’s themselves and it
could be looked at and possibly changed.
This would be a relatively quick process due to new technology. In this day and age there shouldn’t be radio
missions or newspapers. Not that they can’t exist, but just like in real life, we have smartphones that links every
character to every possible event that can be thought up.
Conclusion
We can take advantage of the great REAL technology that we have today and implement this advantage to
make this a great game! This database would be a great way to mix and match teams with old/new members and
different power types and create a great community relationship. I for one know that social media works, I see that
everyday. And I believe supers aren’t any different, they want to be connected to their friends, players, and they
even want to know what their arch-enemy is up to

The only reason I usually knew when plans were made for TF's was because I was friends with the core people in Justice Brigade before CoH came out, and we planned our TFs either over the phone or when we gathered to watch anime or play D&D/Cyberpunk/Werewolf, the Apocalypse/etc.

While in game, just have an Event reminder that sends out an email to you, or in the Coalition Panel, have it flash 2 times and you can see its 10 minutes before the TF. players can Opt In and as one team gets filled, another is formed?
@Izzy, But what if you're not playing? I'm saying it should send an alert that will pop up on your phones lock screen(assuming you have the CoT app). Emails are okay, but they can be so easily unnoticed, if you had a actual phone style, have a little chat window in the corner that does soft blinks when there is an event or direct message to you so you can be more aware.
But on another note, about the apps could be on the phone in the game, they could create an app for the database called Quinnslist(similar to craigslist(obviously) where you have the multiple options, such as "looking for members" "Costume Contest" " need help") or something along those lines :D

Sounds like what you want to start with is a URL that sends you an iCalendar file (which is widely supported). Then you can just tell the smartphone calendar program of your choice to "subscribe" to it and all the SG events just show up, and you can do whatever you want with that so long as your calendar program supports it.
Other games have in-game guild event calendars, so I'd be surprised if they left that out of CoT.
Once you have that, what's left that needs to be added?
Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...
That's exactly what I'm talking about @Lin! You can view a entire list of events and you can subscribe to whatever event you want. And it gets attached to the calender and it will give a ~10 minute pop-up warning message on your screen - or phone if your not playing. I'm sure there is a lot of stuff that could branch from this concept, but all I wrote on the top was my ideas, so if all that can be done then I'm happy. But if anyone else can think of anything to add I think that would be very beneficial :)

It's a good idea, and you could do more with i that just a calendar event; you could incorporate IMs/texts; Twitter; FB posts, etc. I like the idea of receiving an in-game 'text' or whatever that tells me The League of Random Superhoroes is once again assaulting Villain X's base, and are calling for support from all allies (i.e. some group I know with friends is short a blaster and needs to fill a spot to do a raid or similar, and that 'text' would simultaneously be sent to my phone if I had opted for that. You could even make it so that you had to be running the CoT app, thereby still tying it to being in-game, and maybe making it easier to implement, since the app is being developed anyway - thank you, Stretch Goals!

Just be careful on setting it up. Many phones/calendars have two different methods using mixed up terminology
- one way is an "import" which is a download-once-and-import-to-my-calendar system. It won't help you when the master calendar updates
- what most should want is a "subscribe" that will periodically check the url of the ical feed to see if its been updated, and automatically import the changes
