Very cool moguls! Love the retro styles!

Hm looking back over the last few mogul/landmark posts, I'm not finding anything like that. Of course this could have been from a long time back...
Wait until you see the... nope, that would ruin the surprise.
These look great as usual. ;)
I've sort of had a lingering question that was "refreshed" in my head by seeing the "Body Canvas Tats" Mogul. Basically has there been any consideration by MWM for linking things like a "costume creation outlet" to obviously related Moguls?
Recall we had the Icon stores in CoH where we could create/edit our costumes. It would seem to make sense that a Mogul building that's dedicated to tattoos would be the perfect location in the game for a public place to do costume changes like how Icon worked in CoH.
More specifically it'd be ideal if you could only do tattoo editing at Body Canvas Tats, but for the sake of simplicity having a public door that would let you enter a small yet fully functional "costume shop" at the Body Canvas Tats Mogul building would be a cool way to make these types of places feel even more "real".

Wowzers, that one does go back a ways...

Weekly updates... Hopefully this means we are getting close to the release of issue #0. And hopefully before the end of June.
Puny Heroes.
I very highly doubt these weekly updates are going to last past mogul buildings and since they have nothing to do with Issue #0, I don't think it would be good to infer that, since they are weekly, that means we are somehow close to I0 release.
Compulsively clicking the refresh button until the next update.
I figured it might mean they had a lot more stuff put together they were willing to show off finally, hence more updates. More stuff done equals closer to release, but I guess I might be grasping at straws.
Puny Heroes.
For what it's worth I hope you're right. But they've been working on mogul buildings for years so I'd guess this is just an easy few updates for them to fill. But... they didnt spread them out to every other week which I guess is a good sign...?
Compulsively clicking the refresh button until the next update.
Right, I just figured if they had stuff to show off they would space it out to make it last. 'Unless' they have more to show off. But I could be wrong, I'm just trying to be hopeful here.

Counter-proposal:
Offer a costume editing discount for geting the costume work done at thematically appropriate moguls. That way you don't HAVE TO go there in order to get the work done ... but some of the options will be cheaper if you get them done there ... meaning there's an incentive (rather than an imperative) to go there to make your costume edits ... AND ... that incentive will act like a magnet to draw other characters minded to take advantage of/exploit the discount, meaning you'll get to see a self-selection bias of costume types inside the shop(s) there.
Think about it ...

This makes me really wish that for the interior of Sapphire's Cafe the upper floor REVOLVED around the center at a rate of 1 revolution per hour. Align the booths radially (so people can see out the windows while the world turns) and use the central area/pillar as the fixed restaurant/staff area that the booths revolve around. Space walkways to the outer edge of the revolving section at every 1/3 or 1/4 section to give access to a stationary walkway within the windows and you're all set.
I remember there was a restaurant like this in Epcot Center (some 30 years ago) that basically spun once per hour so that you would slowly get to see different stuff around your booth over the course of your meal, rather than being stuck with a single view the entire time. Each of the booths were numbered so the staff could find you again (easily) to serve you.

Yeah we ate there a few years ago, at the time it served American home cooking (fried chicken, mashed potatoes) in huge quantities as a family place. Characters visited tables. It was okay, my youngest daughter sure loved it.
Some might say they have a... rotating menu?

CN Tower had (still has?) a restaurant called 360 that rotated at the top too. It was... pricey, to say the least.
The "Mischief" series of Moguls originated from me. I love the new thought, goes back to the original email about options. Mischief's ascent was one that the first concept artist zeroed in on.
Mischief was my wife, we met on CoH, eventually married, a beautiful thing. Mischief passed a few years ago and the personal meaning of this mogul building has at least evolved for me. It's been a delight seeing this game progress.
"it's a long road to wisdom, but it's a short one to being ignored." The Lumineers
Sure why not. For what it's worth I wasn't suggesting that a Mogul like Body Canvas Tats would be the ONLY place in the entire game to get tattoos. Not sure where you got that "exclusivity" idea from.
When I said you should ideally "only be able to get tattoos" at a place like Body Canvas Tats I meant that most tattoos parlors IRL don't also sell auto parts or tennis rackets. Even though limiting a given store in-game to "just tattoos" might be more realistic I figured it just be easier from an implementation point of view to make a place like Body Canvas Tats be a "fully functional" costume shop just like ALL the others in the game just so the Devs wouldn't have to figure out how to do a "tattoo only" costume GUI.
Ultimately a place that "explains its existence" as a place to get tattoos should ideally let players actually get tattoos there. Another example would be if a Mogul building explains itself as a "gadget store" it should ideally let players buy crafting related items. The main idea would be to make these places actually DO what they are suggesting they are there to DO.
Anyway I'd have absolutely no problem with the idea that Mogul-based stores might offer some kind of "discount" to provide incentives to go to those places instead of other alternatives.

This, my friend, is why we are supporting CoT. I'm sorry to hear about your wife's passing, but I'm glad that she will be memorialized in such a meaningful way. Now we all know your story and every time we see the building we will be reminded again not just of your relationship, but the fact that the community was so strong it resurrected itself from the ashes to become this.

Yeah, I’ll remember that story too when I see that building in-game.
Let me see if I can get an in-game plaque or memorial set up on this. No promises of course but I'll do my best.

Currently trapped inside the Speed Force...
Because the city isn't done being constructed. They have the pieces they need to put it together now, but they're neither done, nor is it the most appropriate place to show off a piece that can be showed off solo with another program. The entire thing is a matter of practicality.
An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".
That is correct. There was a discussion as these things came from the creator about putting them on a map but we figured that would not work well (yet).

I realize it's probably way too early for you to be able to answer this but I'll ask anyway: Do you have any idea what the limits for these plaques will be? Will they be "designable" by players or will they just be a generic space to allow for a few dozen words (like a Tweet)?
I've grabbed a few pics of completely random real life building plaques for the sake of discussion:

Environmental Artist, PR Editor
As always your openness to work with players and their Moguls is appreciated. :)
I'll ask one more semi-weird question about this that you might be able to answer now: You stated that every Mogul will have some kind of "plaque" as if it's going to be mandatory to have one. Could a Mogul owner opt out of having a plaque if they didn't want it?
I understand that for many of the Mogul buildings we've seen so far having a plaque would likely be a cool idea/addition. But I could envision some situations where it might not actually "make sense" for some Moguls to have a plaque related to it. Again I'm mostly coming at this from a "player choice" point of view and was just wondering whether having a plaque is an "optional" feature or not.
Just to be clear even if a player didn't have a plaque attached to their building the Mogul's name would still have to appear on in-game maps and the player wouldn't be able to "hide" their Mogul's existence from the general game lore or other players. Basically the Mogul would still exist in the "game world" lore-wise regardless if it had a plaque or not.

I think it’s important we let the mogul contributors decide if they want a plaque (or something similar that fits the aesthetic of the mogul). Many of the moguls (like Madame Meagors’ in particular) have very interesting, (even moving) stories behind them, I hope we support their creativity and the vision they are sharing with us in their concept. If they want a ‘plaque’, I’m pretty certain we will design it so it won’t look out of place, but will look like a special touch to a building we all will enjoy..
Environmental Artist, PR Editor
Sure that's totally fine. Like I said the absence of a plaque wouldn't mean that a Mogul would be treated any differently in any other "game important" way as far as badges or being marked/named on a map or anything else. Again I was mainly wondering how "flexible" MWM would be about the whole "plaque" idea and it sounds like you'd be fairly flexible even to the point of not having one.
I'm sure for the Moguls that are closer to being "historical landmarks" having verbose plaques on them that summarize the history/lore about them would be totally appropriate like this:

On the other hand I'm thinking specifically of my Mogul which will be of a modern skyscraper type building. I'm tending to think a brand new modern, semi-futuristic building would have something more "matter of fact" and succinct. Being the Star Trek nerd that I am I'm literally thinking of something along the lines of this:

reworked to apply to a building instead of a ship.
Obviously I'll have to put some more thought into exactly what I'd want but clearly building plaques like these can vary in terms of how much "lore" you want to put on them or not.
CoH player from April 25, 2004 to November 30, 2012

In the case of plaques not fitting, maybe a board, sign or a framed certificate that acts as a thank you to the person involved with the building could also work. There's definitely various ways you could squeeze in credit, even if it's more subtle. Like a restaurant could have a folding sign that says "Thanks to these people for donating funds for our establishment" and listing the mogul's creator's name at the top or in an obvious way.

I suppose if a Mogul player wanted to narcissistically thank themselves for donating to the game by saying as much on their equivalent of a Mogul plaque I suppose the Devs would have to let a player do that. ;)
Obviously I'm not going to suggest what other Mogul players do with their Moguls but I for one am -not- going to have my plaque say anything like "We thank Lothic for building this building for us". I don't need credit for paying for an in-game building for myself even if other players get to use/enjoy its existence as well.

Hopefully there aren't so many mogul buildings that it winds up damaging the look of the city with gigantic, custom buildings everywhere. Especially what with some of these mogul choices being really huge it seems.
Puny Heroes.
We've gotten the Devs to confirm (in other threads) there were only 95 Moguls from the Kickstarter. I know it might sound funny to hear me say "only" 95 of them but compared to the overall size of the city (which we can judge by the maps that have already been released) I seriously doubt they are going to "damage the look of the city" in any way.
I have faith that the Devs have already planned things out well enough that the Moguls won't look "clumped" together or be overwhelmingly obtrusive.

Fair enough.

Yeah the Devs did mention at one point that they only expected to have roughly half of the Moguls (45-ish?) to be in the areas of the game that they plan to launch with. That should definitely help to spread them around to all corners of the game world.

Another another thing, as you can see the Mogul buildings have been done in such a way that they'll fit into whatever neighborhood they're put in. I assume that each building isn't a mandate from a backer, but rather a collaboration between a backer and a designer based on the backer's original idea. But you're unlikely to see a shiny futuristic building of chrome and neon in the middle of a bunch of crumbling brownstones.
Yeah it's worded as such on the KS, good call.

As FYI I've been able to provide some design input about my Mogul building but I was never asked (nor did I ever suggest) an exact address/place where the building would exist in the game.
I have no idea if any other Mogul player directly asked that their Mogul be placed in a specific game location but I for one left that decision entirely up to the Devs. I always assumed the Devs would want to have full control over where my Mogul is placed so that it makes the most "aesthetic sense" in terms of fitting into the cityscape.
Basically I've taken it as faith that the Devs would place these Moguls where they would be best suited and most appropriate.

As I recall, I had asked for mine to be placed near beach or docks for pleasure craft, and I think they took that into account when deciding where to put it. But I still don't know if it will be over here or down there, or how close it will be to the water.

I'm sure they've taken those things into account based on the general nature of a given Mogul. For instance if you've got a "water-based" Mogul (i.e. a pier, a marina, a lighthouse, etc.) then I'm sure they'd logically put it next to water somewhere.
I never doubted Mogul players were allowed to suggest general areas for their buildings to be located; I just don't know how many people felt that kind of thing was important. I personally didn't specify a place because I knew my Mogul was going to be relatively tall and would likely need to be placed where such a tall building would fit in with the rest of the skyline. Basically in my case the precise location wasn't a priority for me. *shrugs*
