Discuss: What You Know About CAP

I told you we were listening to your discussion in 'Lead a Horse to Water' about what you did and didn't want in Lore updates. A lot of our more thoughtful supporters weighed in, and that fact did not escape us. Let us know if this is a step in the right direction. And if so, of course, what's the next subject?

So far so good it's a good chance to get to know who we will be up against or background stories. Hmmm next subject ? When hamidon exploded for the last time his remnants were scattered through space and ended up in Titan city waiting to rebuild his strength :) well it wouldn't hurt to dream

That was really cool. I certainly don't want to see any less of the great stories that deliver some of the TC lore like a chapter in a novel, but I really like having the condensed version as well, giving all the salient details in a style not too different from another popular game's "Monster Manual."

All Hail the Might Monster

All Hail the Might Monster Manual. In our group not only did pretty much every member have a copy of it, we also had our fair share of "Rules Lawyers". It reached such heights that in one campaign, our DM secretly ditched the MM, and only used it as a reference for "his" monsters.

It was hilarious! By the time everyone figured out what he had done, we had all resigned ourselves to hear "That's nice, my Monster is different", every time a Lawyer would speak out.

Take heed Devs. do not release too much info, or the Rules Lawyers will get you, and remember your defense: "That's nice . . . . . . "

As for what you should release next, you have several options:
1) Keep it alphabetical
2) Release all "Blue" side first, then "Red" side
3) alternate "Blue" vs. "Red". (of course if you have a Vigilante/Rogue type system this gets rather complicated.)

I would recommend you go Alpha as much as possible.

We have not stopped Olanterns

We have not stopped Olanterns' Tales series. Rather this is the sort of thing we'll post in-between (as per the current plan), so you get your drama and then your straight up information. This is, again, in response to the Horse to Water thread, which suggested people occasionally got tired of the drama and just wanted us to cut to the chase.

I really enjoy background articles like this one. I also enjoy stories based on the lore, but getting the background material helps to get my own creative juices flowing because it helps provide a context for the stories my own characters experience as I play the game.

IIRC, they already have a wiki, it's just that it's for the devs' benefit and has stuff on it that we're not cleared for. FNORD.

Citizens’ Alliance for Protection. Sounds cool, and I'm sure you're considering ways of emphasizing the neighborhood watch/vigilante dual perception of this group. I could see different mission arc leaning one way or the other, not to mention the possibility of some gang taking up their "colors" in order to discredit them. Could there be some internal strife with in the group where certain members are the vigilante faction?

Don't expect any answers on that... until we start playing, and I'm not talking Beta testing.

I haven't keep up with all the update, so who knows, maybe you already have something like this in the works, but I'd love to see a group based on Clockwork Orange. Just a bunch of young thugs who aren't into robbing stores for the money, just out to bash heads for the thrill of it. They live to fight, and fight to live. If they aren't sporting a few bruises they simply aren't happy.

Anyways...

Keep up the good work!

This is good stuff, yep. It's nice to have this kind of background information because it allows some perspective on the group. Without such information any subtlety or nuance involving characters from these groups is almost certain to be lost on the reader.

Willow48000 wrote:

I dare say that this is almost a given. Friction exists even within such highly structured organizations as the military and police force (or corporations, for that matter). They're almost guaranteed within a more informal, decentralized civilian group.

Mewkychan wrote:

As Foradain mentioned, they do have a wiki they use to check for continuity and such (see Writing for City of Titans: The Process). I expect the wiki to which we will have access will be the CapeChasers site (hopefully complete with comments, snark, and "Tweets" from "users").

I must say that I enjoy ALL

I must say that I enjoy ALL of the threads and styles of information being shared. CapeChaser wiki-entries and Tales, and the Gabby Cabbie too. Each is a different voice, a different form of lore, and it all gets dumped in the giant jumble-heap in the back of my mind, where it... ferments.

While I have read posts complaining about colloquial forms of Lore-sharing, _I_ am vastly amused and intrigued by the possibilities. Consider:

The Geraldo! Show
30 Minutes with Cronkite
Mindy's After-School Blather-Cast (where every third sentence is 'Oh Mah GAW!')
Police Blotter Posts
Tonight, on 'Gods, Monsters & UFOs'...
A lecture by Professor Cedric Macintosh PhD.
Doctor Horrible's Nightly 'Threatcast' (where he rants about how he's going to get revenge on Everybody! Or perhaps he sings... *shiver*)
An Interview with the Mayor of Titan City
Fodor's Guide to Titan City

And I bet You all can think of more 'flavors' for Lore-threads.

Be Well!

I'm sorry man, but I have to disagree with this idea. If they do something like this then they might as well just go back to the Gabby cabbie format. I think a lot of the peoples problem with that format, is that you're trying to sort through all of the "sensationalized "language to try to find actual information on whatever the subject is about. At this stage in development I think it's far more practical to just lay down the facts. Dramatic undertones and superfluous information is better saved for in game missions.

On this score I agree with

On this score I agree with Zerohour. Too much local color in the lore posts will start to infringe on the kind of flavor and nuance I would like to pick up while actually playing the game. If I'm doing the equivalent of looking up information on groups or individuals I'd like to get the straight dope. If I want to know what people think or feel about those some groups or individuals, I'd like to go out to talk and listen to these people rather than look over the shoulder of someone having all the fun. MWM is building a world for us to explore and discover. I've no interest in doing so vicariously.

None of which is to say that there's no room for "The Late Late Show with Billy Balderdash". For me, the holy grail of that kind of lore is to have such pieces regularly published on the website as in-game TV or radio shows on which various NPCs will comment.

I did enjoy the Gabby Cabby

I did enjoy the Gabby Cabby posts but I prefer straightforward information as it helps provide context for other posts. And I would like to note that there is no reason to be upset with the new information format because (as Shadow Elusive said) the Olantern's tales will be continuing and I'm sure all angles will be covered including (possibly) a reporters view.

We do listen to the comments

We do listen to the comments on these updates, and are well aware of the wide variety of interests with regard to the type of lore that is released.

Some people want more straightforward, like this "What You Know About..." series. Other people want it in a more episodic fashion like the "Tales of" stories. Some people like the "sensationalized" format of Gabby Cabbie. Some don't want any at all. While we can't do all of these things at once, we are trying to hit them all in some form.

We will continue to provide lore updates in a variety of formats. If anyone has a suggestion for a format that we have not yet used, please let us know. We may or may not use that format (we used many formats during the actual Kickstarter that have not been seen since for varying reasons), but we will consider it.

Please continue to provide us with honest feedback. We take to heart what is said, and use it to improve future lore updates.

And our wiki is a bit dry in places, and will be getting more so over time as it fills up with fiddly details related to this being a *game*, as opposed to a real place.

Nothing stopping any of you from starting a wiki; the CoH wiki was mostly populated by fans who pulled info out of it, after all.

Not to worry, then. We have many planned, and in a number of different formats!

For those that like the straight-forward style like this, our plan was to see how this one was perceived. At this point, we are pleased with the response, and hope to make it into a regular series, frequency to be determined.

I like this sort of update.

I can appreciate that some people like the Cabbie, but I don't know that I've managed to read more than one or two of his posts all the way through. I much prefer straightforward info, even very broad, general info like this. On the whole, I'm more interested in how the various bits and pieces fit together to form the game world than specific lore or extensive narratives.

It would be great if posts in the "What You Know About..." category could have an accompanying image, even a concept sketch, but I realize that such sketches might not even exist yet for many factions.

I liked this update - very straightforward "file" on a group in the game world. That said I liked the more narrative ones as well - they just perform different functions - they fill in the world as a whole and how everything interacts with everything else from an in-universe point of view.

I enjoyed the new format - it's my favorite way to be introduced to any lore group for the first time. After this sort of "wiki page" intro, I'd be fine with hearing motivations and news-like tales in a narrated (Tales/Cabbie) style, though I think Zerohour and Darth Fez make a good point...motivations and backstories are best revealed to me in-game through mission content, talking with contacts, and "signals hidden in the noise" (news/enemy idle chat/badge text/discoverable clues).

What you could do is put both the "hard facts" of the lore and the "flavour" in the same news update, but split them into *distinct* sections.

I love Shadowrun, and at the start of each chapter they have a few pages of "on the net" discussions about the topic of that chapter

ie Augmentation source book: Bioware chapter. This starts off with articles and loads of flavour. No actual "hard rules" although there are also some explanation columns as well, where needed. And then the 2nd half of the chapter is the nitty gritty rules and mechanics and systems.

However, in the more "Background orientated" source books, they flip it around. All the "hard facts" are at the start of each chapter, and then all the flavour stuff/discussion is afterwards. "The 6th World Almanac" springs to mind here.

Quote:

1) I reject your reality.... and substitute my own
2) Not to be used when upset... will void warranty
3) Stoke me a clipper i will be back for dinner
4) I have seen more intelligence from an NPC AI in TR beta, than from most MMO players.

Many GURPS sourcebooks do

Many GURPS sourcebooks do something similar, a vignette at the beginning of the chapter, then the game data and descriptions; although I think with a lower flavor:crunch ratio than Gangrel reports in Shadowrun.

But I think a mix is good, whether in one post or among several.

I think either direction works. That may just be because my high ability to parse text has no problem with the more narrative forms, so lore in the form of Story-Wiki gives me a gestalt and then an explanation. Having it in a Wiki-Story order would probably make the narrative section easier, since I would have the Wiki section as a framework to give context to the Story.

I don't think that both Wiki and Story segments need to be combined, they can each stand on their own. Perhaps a link from the Story segment to the Wiki entry, or vice-versa, for those whose busy lives weaken their retention of trivia?

Many GURPS sourcebooks do something similar, a vignette at the beginning of the chapter, then the game data and descriptions; although I think with a lower flavor:crunch ratio than Gangrel reports in Shadowrun.
But I think a mix is good, whether in one post or among several.

The ratios change from book to book, and chapter to chapter. And even edition to edition (as they bring it up to date).

Now in the early days, if I remember correctly a lot of the Dungeons and Dragons RPG source books (and games of that era) were a LOT more "dry" in terms of what they covered, with minimal "lore stuff". Especially in the "core rule books" (or even stuff like the Monstrous manual... that was essentially just stats stats stats).

This quite possibly made it more "nerdy" than it really needed to be.

However, the source books were a lot more "lore friendly", but this was because they were doing a lot more of the explanations in a dry sense, with a very little "lore from a certain point of view".

Hell, at one point in time I used to go to bed reading source books flavour text... there were some nice juicy tidbits in there that the "hard rules" never actually mentioned, but it was nice when you got two opposing points of view about a certain topic being hashed out by two different people, and it was happening as you read the chapter.

Side note: It is worth noting that with the shadowrun source books, they have a group of 4 or 5 "characters" that appear in the source books and act as the "liberators/deliverers of news". The Smiling Bandit, Slamm-O!, Fastjack are the most notable who have appeared in source books from practically day 1, putting their point of view in short comments.

Just like Gabby the Cabby... but with FAR FAR less words needed.

4) I have seen more intelligence from an NPC AI in TR beta, than from most MMO players.

As soon as I see CAP ... I

As soon as I see CAP ... I immediately add the "silent E" (as well as sing the song by Tom Lehrer) and turn it into a CAPE.

I can sing most of Tom Lehrer's songs, including the ones from The Electric Company, like 'L-Y' and others that would delight the kiddies and horrify their parents. *evil grin*

Still, without Silent E, the CAP are clearly not-super, which makes them interesting... and a little bit like Malta.

I've loved Tom Lehrer's songs

I was introduced to Tom Lehrer's music when one of my teachers (at a catholic high school) played The Vatican Rag for us in class. Been a fan ever since.

Back on topic, I REALLY liked the format of this lore update.
Most of my forum time is spent on my lunch break at work and I tend to browse through things quickly (a bit too quickly sometimes).
This format was a bit more "digestible" for me.
