Discuss: Tales from the City: A Morning Stroll in Zukunft Skypark

Another Lore update this week. You'll find the original story here: https://cityoftitans.com/content/tales-city-morning-stroll-zukunft-skypark

Once again thanks to Staff Writer Eric 'Beamrider' Pawtowski for this one.

Wait until you see the... nope, that would ruin the surprise.

I 'think' we've mentioned at least one of them before. Since I'm not sure about that (not without diving into the old posts) I'll have to get back to you.

Or.... if our brave and daring forumites want to go on a slight Treasure Hunt....

edit: Turns out we HAVE mentioned Amelia before. Still, I'll leave the treasure hunting to y'all. :)

Hmm. Definitely needs the lines spaced out for readability. This seems more like a lead-in chapter than anything really on its own as well.

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

Especially the "get some help along the way" as I felt like I wanted my hero to see them flying overhead and jump in to help them.

Don't waste time looking for Joanne in other updates. As the story notes, she's a visitor from Philadelphia, not a Titan City regular.

Oh, and lest anyone think

Oh, and lest anyone think this exchange:

Quote:

"Err, how can there be trees up here? The dirt can't be that deep."

Amelia shook her head slightly. "It's a common misconception that roots are a reflection of the crown, particularly in woody plants with apical dominance. Lateral roots don't have nearly as much gravitropism--"

"English, please!"

"Tree roots don't run as deep as you'd think."

is technobabble handwaving, I submit this view of the Euclid Avenue (which is in the national Historical Register) bridge from the CA 210 freeway, back in aught-two:

The trees are more impressive now, but I couldn't find a better image, and I never remember to stop and take a photo when I go past. Sorry. As for how deep the soil is, a Roads and Bridges article from aught-three says

Quote:

The overpass bridge is covered 5 ft deep with material--dirt and sod--and there are 45 or 50 trees planted on top of it. When you drive over this structure, you don't even know that you're going over the freeway.

Where I live is located on a creek which has a watershed larger than all of New York City, and due to the fact that it is a glacial creek (or at least was 10 000 years ago), there are many examples of exposed shale and other sedimentary rock with a very thin layer of soil and tree roots. I would go take a photo to share just what it looks like, but it is currently far too dangerous to go down into the ravine - with the breaking of the ice-pack, it's a massive flood risk. It's very impressive seeing 80 year old trees with roots that don't seem to go more than a foot or so down into the soil - it's just that the root network is wide and secure enough that if the tree were to fall over due to erosion, the roots would stay in place for another hundred years.

It is only when we stand up, with all our failings and sufferings, and try to support others rather than withdraw into ourselves, that we can fully live the life of community.

In This Rather Lengthy Post,

In This Rather Lengthy Post, I Appeal for Patience and Civility, By Telling Off Everybody...

A number of us (myself included) have gotten frustrated and written posts that run the range between snark, stabs, and outright flames. I think some of us never have wished MWM well. Others, like myself wrestle with a desire to be on a friendly basis, a desire to wish MWM well, and yet, on the other hand, the realization that some negative feed/criticism is in fact long overdue.
And yet... the fact remains, this is a volunteer effort. The volunteers work their jobs, pay their bills, suffer through life's litany of drama. Then they work this job without pay.
If it were me, let me say, the amount of BS I would take from anyone is a rather limited quantity. Especially from someone not walking the same walk.
So, I feel compelled to say, I think some of us (myself included) have, in moments of frustration, overstepped.
At the same time, I don't think the backers are getting even a modicum of civility.

(quote from a fan who I’d rather not ‘call out’ by naming)
"To all the moaners: where are your games?"
Really? Because when I pledged to MWM, I thought I was helping make it happen. I thought "my game" *was* City of Titans... at least, in small part.
So I don’t feel in the least bit out of line asking hard questions, such as "Yeah, good question, where IS my game?"

Let's rewind back to the start.
We used to have a game we loved to play, it became our online home. Every one of us is connected by the fact we used to love "the old neighborhood."
The creators did not see it that way, and decided to torch and shred it all in a most brutal and senseless fashion, as was their right. Doesn't make it any less senseless or brutal, but it was their game and theirs to do with as they pleased.
So we grieved, and there was nothing we could do.

Along comes MWM and the kickstart. Yes, they promised a ridiculously early due date. A few of us seem to have been unfortunate enough to believe said due date. I'm not mad because I took one look, laughed, and said 'the world doesn't work that way… let’s see what they say when reality sets in.’

I pledged approximately what I'd spend in the old game in subscription and microtransactions for one year. At the time, I estimated MWM's odds as poor. But I wanted to make a statement, that I'd rather spend to make a game I would like, than settle for a game that I did not.

A quick Mea Culpa; I am forever attributing Chris Hare quotes to Nate Downs and vice versa. Please don't hate me, at least, not for that. I think the world of you both and it fuels my confusion at times.

I believe it was Chris Hare who told us that we'd see a lot of nothing, then a bit of progress, and then it would just build. For many years, that was what was promised, and that was what seemed to be happening. At the same time, we were getting a lot MWM-Bashing, and I’ve tried my best to fight against that relentlessly… if only to let the volunteers know that I (we) believe in them, and that their efforts are not unappreciated.
But also, we have to harken back to the idea that it took a 1.2 billion dollar company five years to make the game. It just didn’t strike me as sensible to demand some indie-volunteer effort to do more in less time.
I was prepared to wait five years. I am prepared to wait five more. But this patience is based on something that is very important. That patience and determination is based on “The-Map-Being-The-Territory”. That when Chris Hare or Nate Downs says “Okay, here’s how it’s going to go down…” that what we’re told will happen does in fact happen. Now, I’m not saying, “Well, three weeks late, it’s firing squad time”… the road to success is bumpy, rocky, and peculiar. We should all know that.

But in broad general brush strokes… what we’re told to expect should be what unfolds.

With the occasional server crash thrown in to teach us… uh, “save early, save often” I think.

I would hold that, in broad general brush strokes, what we were told would happen, did happen...until October 2018. Then it was like MWM suddenly decided to stop acting like MWM.

My first real unease was New York Comic Con. A lot of people have a very simple metric for measuring progress. Is it on my hard drive? Am I personally playing it? If yes, this is progress. If no, then nothing was accomplished.

When New York Comic Con of October 2018 rolled around, many of us wondered what they would release at the convention. Some of us thought the beta would roll out. Most of us thought the Alpha would open its doors. No, not in January, but in October. A very, very few of us thought we’d get neither, but that backers would end up with some stand alone character generator.

None of us dreamed MWM would show up to a convention literally empty handed. Looking back, I suspect that the disappointment was palpable and led to overpowering pressure to make a promise better left unmade… alpha rollout in January.

The con ended, and I was beginning to look hard at the state of things. Past history doesn’t suggest that promises get kept. I asked about the possibility of the costume generator as a standalone and was told it “had bugs that no backer should see.”

I think it was meant as a joke, but I didn’t and won’t take it in that vein. Rather, I think that was a moment of clarity as to where backers stand in MWM’s heart… it is not a very good place. Bluntly, people at a convention, who never pledged a dime, who don’t even play MMO’s rank quite a bit higher on MWM’s current ‘give-a-damn’ list than any backer does. At the very least, it’s long past time to communicate to MWM that they’ve communicated this as their view, whether or not it actually is.

2019 came around, along with the bad news. It was expressed in pretty words, it expressed all the right sentiments… and then…things seem to have become unglued. Or perhaps, I noticed they always had been.

I was looking at the costume creator video and realized it was just more and more and more of what I’d seen for (according to youtube dates) two solid years. I was looking at another post’s fire animation…it seemed kind of rough and then it occurred to me if really basic animations are still being worked on, then even without a server crash, the odds of a successful alpha rollout were pretty remote. Recent posts on auras again suggest a project that is much further behind than backers know.

I think a lot of us, possibly MWM included, looked at last years videos and thought a lot of progress was being made that wasn’t. Videos (and most other presentations) aren’t fake, they’re just not real. They’re not lies, they’re promises. They’re not mile markers of progress. I was never lied to. At worst, I was allowed to assume things that were not so. And assume I did and now I'm in shock and trying to sort out what's real and what's not.

I’ve lost any sense whatsoever that the map is the territory. The territory I see right now is completely unfamiliar. And I will not accept the idea that, as a backer, I am even a tiny bit out of line saying “Good Lord, where are we? Do we even know?”

“Are we engaged in a process that is capable of completing? or are we like the author who will tweak and edit those first few chapters forever?”

I have no patience for shows of temper or for quarrels. Toward devs, or fans, or backers.
I just want to know where we stand... no matter how bad the news may be. As for the "YOUR LATE!"-crowd, let's stop pretending those flames are unearned.
I can appreciate the extreme difficulty of obtaining and giving solid dates. Still, it’s not believable to say “we don’t know, and we can’t prioritize finding out, and we can’t give a rough estimate by June 1st.” At whatever pace we are moving, uncertainty as to the release date should be narrowing, not growing exponentially.

From here on out, even if it changes, there should be a release date in every update. And if it changes, then so be it. Or, if that's impossible, some clear indication of "YOU ARE HERE" on a dateless road map. We just got ABC done. We're moving on to XYZ. That will leave these three (or three hundred) things to do. Then we'll release.

Knowing were we stand is the most important update we could give. We can take bad news. But we can’t take disinformation, or lack of information.
At the same time, this should not be “open season” on the volunteers. I am grateful for all they do. We all should be.
I want to believe in MWM, City of Titans, and I want to believe in the devs.
Most of all, I want to play this game.
It hurts, just to think I may be earning (or cementing) my rep as “that jerk”

But I’ve lost any sense of where we are, and where we’re going.
I want to regain what I had in the beginning, which is Warcabbit saying “Okay, expect it to go down like this”… and seeing it, more or less, in broad terms, go down like that.
If I can get that back, then I can believe again.

I'm sure most members of this community love Lore posts but I've never been much of a fan, and I feel we should be getting late enough into the project that more of the crunchy bits are coming to light over the fluff.

Not going to deny it, I share some of SimonDantes' concerns.

It hurts, just to think I may be earning (or cementing) my rep as “that jerk”

As a person who is already "that jerk" for a good percentage of the forum regulars I can only commend you for your excellent commentary and summation of the current situation with this game.

I quite honestly wouldn't bother to call the various Rednames to task if it didn't keep looking like this project was going to be stuck in limbo for decades much less months or anything in-between. Other "Yes Men" for MWM will likely react to posts like yours with predictively apologetic tones but I have absolutely no trouble in accepting the quite realistic notion that our merry band of MWM folks have may have essentially "bitten off more than they can chew" with this project. The odds have in fact always been against them.

Still I hope for the miracle that some day we can all be playing some version of CoT. I have just enough "childish naivety" left in me to think that it might actually happen. I was dumb(?) enough to donate a four-figure amount to MWM back when they ran their first Kickstarter so I'm basically "invested" in the outcome of this game good, bad or otherwise.

I'll finish by saying there have actually been people in this forum who've said things like "it's not respectful for us to 'question' MWM's authority over CoT". Nothing could be further from the truth. People like us are (again hopefully) going to be PAYING these people's salaries some day. The folks at MWM are going to need to grow up and realize this is not always going to be just their little "private pet project". If they want CoT to have some kind of financially profitable future then their ability to LISTEN TO THEIR CUSTOMERS will have to be become their number one priority. Eventually CoT will not just be MWM's game - it'll be EVERYONE'S game.

Respect is earned. I currently respect MWM for their daring attempt to create a wonderful game... to a point. I'll respect them a heck-of-a lot more if they actually succeed.

I’m hopeful, but I can’t

I’m hopeful, but I can’t fault anyone for losing faith. The game has taken a long time, and has been delayed many times. The reason why I am still hopeful is that they’re open about the delays, and the reasons for being set back. I’m expecting Issue 0 this year, and if I don’t see it I’ll be disappointed, and worried about the future of the game. But I’m still cautiously optimistic.

Despite that letter, I

Despite that letter, I suspect I am more a yes-man or fan-boy than critic.

I don't want MWM tarred and feathered. I'm not looking to "take action" or any such nonsense.

I'm grateful for the volunteers and their efforts, I am grateful they're trying when no one else would. Trying when everyone else scatters like vermin is a pretty sure way of biting off more than you can chew. If that is their sin, it does not come close to unforgivable. Such a sin, is, in fact, endearing.

What has me distressed is simply that last summer I would have thought we were sixty or seventy percent done and that we'd launch in fall 2018.
Updates in 2019 make me think it's more thirty percent tops, my own private time estimate is seriously leaning toward a 2033 release date. Worst of all I feel like we're getting less sure if or when we will launch over time, rather than more. That I cannot swallow.

I respect them. But I still must ask questions.
In this case, what I need is that broad general vision of how things will go that WarCabbit gave us updated.

Well, without any inside

Well, without any inside knowledge, I would say the Character Creator is at the 60% - 70%. They can write in the chat and walk around.
I don't know what you mean by 30%, issue #0? Issue #1? If issue #1, I would say maybe more like 25% or less. So many things they need to implement. However, issue #0 (character creator + running around) is certainly reachable this year.

What I'd like to see is a Roadmap. There shouldn't be any dates, but just the features we can expect to ship with the next 2 - 3 versions.

GIMP is doing it quite good, even UE4's Roadmap is cool with using Trello.

No one is asking them to rush the game. Nowhere in this thread has anyone asked them to rush development.

However, issue #0 (character creator + running around) is certainly reachable this year.

I sure hope its reachable. Even with the repository failure they thought they could make the Dec 2018 release. They implied they were, at most, 3 months delayed. If they are going to take much longer than that to accomplish they need to be absolutely transparent about it. I'll stress that their fans, us, are FAR more understanding and patient when they are upfront and transparent.

But, at the same time, they should be able to come out and confidently say that Issue #0 will release in 2019. Since the beginning of last year they've been saying how close they were to releasing the chargen and 2nd Chance. In March 2018 I remember them saying they hoped that by summer we'd have something in our hands. But a year later and us fans have little to make us feel reassured that anything is about to change.

But I'll go ahead and put in the responses to my opinion now: "Look harder", "Soon", "A rushed game is bad" etc.

Clamoring for releases is rushing development.

As Dark Cleric said no one's asking for a "rushed game" or "clamoring for releases". But how much better is a "game delayed for decades..."?

There's going to be a sweet spot between this game being "almost rushed" and "not delayed too long". It'll be interesting if MWM can hit that mark.

P.S. This might be a vulgar way to express this sentiment but sooner or later MWM is going to have to shit or get off the pot. There will come a time sooner or later when "further delay" will be just as bad as "rushing things".

As a matter of fact we do

As a matter of fact we do have a set of Trello cards :P Just set them up recently. They aren't public. Let me ask around about getting a public version set up.

Edit: Nope. Doesn't appear in the cards at this time (pun unintended). I know I commented on another thread recently about what is needing to be done for an Issue#0 to be made public. The items are: Some improvements on the character creator UI, a preliminary installer, the login system, character saves/loads (preliminary version), sub-project integration into the main project (that, and login, are my primary focus at the moment). Much of the work on these items is coming along quite well. There might be more but I'll let another team member (if they are so inclined) to add to this list. If someone here wanted to set their own Trello up I'm more than happy to assist as time permits.

Personally, I've given them

Personally, I've given them until the end of June to get out what they swore would be out at the end of 2018. I won't have much left in me if they can't get out what they were swearing we'd already have in half a years time.

Good to see, that you are using Trello.
Setting up an own Trello, do you mean for CoT? I might start one, if I am able and allowed to, of course.

So, a lot of the on-going work is backend and installation? (Of course the UI and Save / Load are not backend) Good luck then. thumbs-up

All I'll say is that I'm glad

All I'll say is that I'm glad I wasn't the only one whose initial reaction to this post was "another lore update? Really?". Glad I didn't have to be that guy. Hopefully they'll get the picture of where expectations are at the current moment. Time will tell I guess.

I'm not familiar with that epic, but I'd wager given a year and a half they''d've somehow done worse.

Just integrating the bits is not enough to make something available to use. The build still needs to go through a stabilization period. You still have to answer a few questions like:
- The Character Creator & starter zone is not the complete game. Are the code stubs in place? Does the code fail gracefully?
- Is there a robust mechanism in place to catch/report failures so they can be reproduced & fixed?
- Is there an account creation/login mechanism in place?
- Is there a deployment mechanism?
And there are many more questions that needs answers before a build can be released.

MWM gave us many hints over the months as to where the project status was, but interpreting their responses was not clear to everyone. It was long before October 2018 that making the CC release date was on shaky ground. The server hardware failure probably cemented the passing of the release date. I am going to assume that MWM was still learning what it takes to hit a delivery date.

I'm willing to put some

I'm willing to put some hobbies on hold to justify saving up for the 2nd Chance. Despite what most people on here think, I WANT SO BADLY for them to succeed. But it's so hard believe it will if things don't change. Telling us there are things you are still working on before you can release is not good communication; if you aren't releasing we know its because you are working on the things you need to release. The STATUS of those things, however, would be better communication. At least last year there was enough people asking on the forum that we got, almost every week, the "we're still working, we're still on track". Now its "we can't give a date, we don't know." It feels like we're even further away from it than we were before. I mean, it was September of last year that they announced a new website and...nothing. I know the 2nd Chance is supposed to be part of that new website but does that page have to be working for the website to release? I guess the announcement could have been that they were planning on making one...not that they were working on one...but they shared a screen-shot of it so who knows. Not us. They also told us to keep our fingers crossed for "an upcoming missions system test". How'd that go? Who knows. Unless that was the Santa mission, in which case, its a very anti-climactic missions system test. I hate seeing so many interesting things mentioned but there are never any follow-ups.

You don't need to be a phallic symbol about this. I just wanted to clarify why I gave you these answers and that wasn't in any way some kind of assumption that you want some bad blood with the devs.
But, if you need to write like that, I should assume that you want to argue with other users of this forum.

Goodness. My comment, #43, was not in response to you as your comment did not quote me at all.

And as for my reply to you...did you even read what you typed? As if the fact that nothing is finished isn't proof enough, you actually typed out that because they "are working on it, that means it's not finished"...like I wouldn't know that means they aren't done? I was pointing out the redundancy in what you typed; I wasn't being a "phallic symbol".

The problem, which made me think you were, is how you wrote it.
Instead you could have just written "I know, that's obvious." Or even just ignore the redundancy and appreciate the fact, that I tried to help you out.
But you needed to write it like that, which would be taken, by a few people, as an attack. It felt rude to me. Of course, my answer wasn't nice as well, so I want to apologize here.

Of course they're not going

Of course they're not going to give us any dates any time soon. After the Fall 2018 mess, they're afraid to get back on that horse. Don't really blame 'em.

Full disclosure: I just recently signed the NDA. I can now say I'm pleasantly surprised at how far along things actually are, compared to how it looks from "the outside".

I can also say that there's still some valid criticisms that MWM should listen to, but also that there's been some huge strides internally that are going to make a big difference in coming updates.

Bottom line is, don't take these lore updates to mean that the other stuff isn't still moving forward. While I personally prefer the tech stuff myself, some people love these.

I'm sorry then. I sometimes cannot read things like that without jumping to negative conclusions.
But here, I kinda felt something, maybe it was prejudice, because of other discussions. Maybe it's just not a good day for me, I don't know. I hope you won't take my previous posts too much accounted, I often try to be as civil as possible, so it was kind of a first to write it like that.

Just curious: When you say you just "recently signed the NDA" are you referring to the super-old thread of "temporary NDA" cut-n-paste posts or did you sign an actual, binding offline NDA? Heck if I thought I could have gotten legitimate "insider info" by just saying I'd promise not to blab in an open forum post I would've done that 5+ years ago. Please tell us if you are now basically a full-fledged MWM volunteer which would make your "insider" knowledge, well, make sense.

To be fair other than the huge sums of money I plan to spend on this game (I've already KS'd four-figures back in 2013) I doubt I'll actually be able to "volunteer" myself beyond being a devoted beta tester. If MWM expects people to do serious development work in exchange for the "insider info" I'd completely understand - I wouldn't expect anyone to be told all the secrets just based on their simple promise to keep quiet. If that were the case virtually everyone on this forum would already be an "insider". ;)

This is good to hear!
Thanks!

Personally I consider the lore updates just as legit as the "mechanical" updates. While I like the "crunch" as much as anyone, the "fluff" is what makes the actual game world alive.

Also: good to hear from warlocc that the game is coming along nicely on the "inside." Can't wait to see what comes down the pipes in the future.

For the record my priority project is the login system on the client side. If I get permission I'm happy to show a screen still of what I'm doing. I've been sidetracked this weekend on project integration work that got hampered by my current connectivity problems. I hope to get back on it ASAP.

It's good to hear that there

It's good to hear that there is a substantial amount that we aren't seeing. Gives us some hope.

In regards to lore posts, I'll admit, I just flat out don't read them. It feels like spoiling the game for me, without actually getting to play it. While it's good to see that there is work going into the development of lore and character development, I'd personally rather learn of these stories in game, as a character. It also feels a bit "fanfic"y to me to read walls of text describing the lives of super heroes and super villains, with no other context. I would honestly probably be more inclined to appreciate these posts if there were some images included, whether they're screenshots in game of the story being staged, or just drawings/sketches, I think it would help bring the story to life a bit more. It could even serve as a way to promote the comic and bring in funds, by giving a speak peak of what the comic is, then linking to a support page at the bottom.

We were actually discussing

We were actually discussing images and the lack of them before this update went out. I was surprised we did have any artist sketches yet. But from this story we can do those now and, possibly, some quick block modeling. It's been needed and I for one do appreciate the detailed descriptions. The fact that people have commented with pictures of their own gives us some better reference photos (such as the trees). So, while the lore updates sometimes seems like a spoiler it does serve a legitimate purpose of provoking important feedback.. In fact if people want to submit their own sketches of what the see in their "mind's eye" when they read these stories that would be very welcome. You don't even have to be an artist! (You should see some of the sketches Warcabbit produces sometimes - crude but functional).

And I'll borrow this as an opportunity to make another call for volunteers. If you have skills you think may be useful to the project, particularly in the fields of 3D art and design, 2D art and design, programming, or any related skills, you can get in touch with us using the CONTACT US link at the bottom of the page, or by sending an E-mail to contact@missingworldsmedia.com

We may be asking for some examples of your work, so please be ready to provide those.

Thanks again to those folks who have, and continue to volunteer their time; and Welcome Aboard, Warlocc.

That's cool. Again I'd only really expect you to release "insider knowledge" to those who are actually "on the inside". I'm sure warlocc will do a fine job - he already hates me which by now must be a requirement for working for MWM... lol :)

That actually leads me to wonder if that super old "temporary NDA" thread even serves a purpose anymore. If it doesn't it probably ought to be locked.

Based on everything I am

Based on everything I am reading here, it seems like the project is in trouble, and that MWM is indeed in over their heads.

Okay. I can accept that. That isn't even close to unforgivable.
As I said before, when I first backed them, I considered it as walking up to the craps table and betting on snake-eyes.

The so called "professionals" wouldn't touch this sort of project. MWM was the only game in town.

So, if they are in over their heads, I appreciate that they were willing to get in over their heads.
MWM, I do not hold your sins to be vile.
Rather, they are endearing.

They haven't scattered and fled. If they still stand with us, then I still stand with them.

Thanks. Was starting to wonder if I should have written the thing.

My 'real' job with MWM is editing the internal lore wiki (wrote up some of the landmarks/NPCs but that was a while ago). SpaceMoose and I also end up doing some of the (very infrequent) physical server work, but that's because we happen to be the staffers who live closest to the coloc they are kept at, other than Dr. Tyche who set up the rack in the first place.

But even those personality conflicts, I know a few (or many) that put me in that group, will be financially supporting this game just as much as those who are "patiently waiting". I, we, am/are just as eager to see CoT knock it out of the park and be crazy successful and we cant wait to jump into the game.

I know your comment might not have been directed specifically at me, but I wanted to throw that in there. I'm just as ready to "put my money where my mouth is" as anyone else, so even if I am annoying...my money is just as needed and as valuable to MWM as anyone elses.

Yeah I put some of you (not directed at you, of course) in there for a while... But for... I don't know a few days or even weeks I think of you being as passionate as everyone.
My opinion might be not as valuable as others, as I am still just a few months here, but I think, all of you want MWM to succeed and I wouldn't believe if someone else would say otherwise. You don't need to be a yes-sayer nor a naysayer to be in favor of this project. You just need to be... Yourself.
