This is a suggestion that I had made on the Kickstarter:
How about a cross between a base raid and an AE? Set up ambush events/missions. One side is given an AE like area where they set up traps, automatic weapons, etc and then advertise for a larger raiding group from the other side. Just a thought.
David MacDonald had an interesting addition:
I like that idea :)
Side A Defends with limited lives (ie: no respawns or only 1-2 per person or no more than 20 total).
Side B Attacks with unlimited lives but only has 5-10 mins to capture the flag, destroy the main power source, kidnap the princess, etc.
I'd add to this by adding a territory control mechanic to the game. For example, a group of Villains could attack a Hero controlled area and massacre Heroes until their control score was high enough to claim the area. Make the required control score be contested by a control score gained by Heroes through massacring villains, maybe have the attackers require twice the score of the defenders and a minimum based on the size of the zone being attacked to win, and the defenders requiring the same. Then have the districts change slowly based on who's in control of the area. For example, a Villain controlled district would have more gangs roaming the streets and more general lawlessness, whereas a Hero controlled district wpuld have a strong police presence and be calm and controlled except in more degraded areas.
I remember being SO PUMPED about the idea of Base raids in CoH. If they manage it in CoT, I will squeal like a giddy schoolgirl at a One Direction concert. Especially if you could raid same-faction bases (think X-Men raiding Avengers HQ to release an innocent mutant, or even mutant extremist who the X-Men believe only they can control safely). ROLEPLAYING FODDER!
Player created PvP content would be very cool!
