Any talk yet about destructible environs? I looked and didn't see any but If so, drop a link. If not, I'll start with the questions:
Anybody think this is a good idea? For myself, I recognize the difficulty of doing this in an open world. However, in the general environment, I could see a 'semi' destructible building. Like if a hero slams, or is slammed by, a bad guy into a building, the window gets a spider-web crack and the building sheds some dust. Or the ground gets a 2D sort of 'impact crater'. Something that doesnt require excessive animation. After all, a city with a bunch of super-spandex types in it would develop some hefty building codes I would think. :) Like California earthquake code.
But in instanced missions, I'd like to see more destruction beyond the usual crate-smashing. Likewise, I may be one of the few who liked the knock-back mechanic. Wouldn't it be cool to knock some baddie through a window or a wall?
Destructible items is one that could play out in a later spiral/release/issue, and the COV had it a bit during bank missions. It may work well in isolated environments like a temporary zones for PVP challenges, AE, or if permitted perhaps AE/Danger rooms attached to bases.
And who knows perhaps the Devs may be able to assign some wholesome damage to knock-back someday (especially if someone is slammed into one of those aforementioned walls breakable or not).
My gold standard questions for a superhero game (PC or otherwise) are:
Can I throw this car at him?
and
Can I punch him through that wall?
Only game to really deliver on both was Freedom Force.
DCUO does a good job of destructible furniture, knockback and the car throwing thing. Since most missions usually happen in an instance, there's no inherent reason we can't smash holes in interior walls or otherwise wreck the joint. Some walls may be super tough, of course.
Visual cracks and broken windows and such in the open zones (that persist for a few minutes) would also be neat.
mrinku, you took the words right out of my mouth. Freedom force was the video game that brought it all home. You could even knock buildings down. I guess with some game mechanic changes for special zones, COT could incorporate some breakable Freedom Force or DCUO action.
If you can punch through walls and thus short-circuit the path through the mission to some extent, then a character with this ability would be perceived as a requirement for the mission. It also means the scenario folks will need to keep this in mind, and might tend to make it irrelevant by simply making the missions long linear tunnels...

Wow ... now I'm **SURE** that I'd NEVER want to play DCUO! In fact, I'd rather play Diablo III than that game! And just for the record, I'm never playing Diablo III ever again.

That was a video of Freedom Force gameplay, not DCUO. I share your feelings about Diablo III, though. I had hoped that it would be as engrossing as Diablo II was, but no...
If I remember right, didn't you also lose some points in fame or popularity for destroying property in Freedom Force? That could be an interesting dynamic, since a hero who trashes your car or home is not gonna be high on your list of favorite people.
One of the things I like about DCUO is being able to freeze an enemy and then pick him up and bash his friends with him.
I too really like this idea. I'd love to have my fire/fire blaster toss a fireball at the wall behind a group and have it topple over on them. I think this would make the game more fun strategically.
I was actually gearing up to post about this same thought - when you watch any fighting between super-powered folks property damage is the gold standard :)
In instancing this would be ideal, there certainly ought to be some damage-triggering of things like walls coming down, etc. Throwing of items like cars, mailboxes, lamposts, etc are a given... being able to break through some walls like the Kool-Aid guy I think is one of the items that sets the genre apart from almost all others. Even fantasy doesn't normally have characters demolishing property with the recklessness (and fun) of superhero comics. I bet a lot of folks would sub up on the game for no other reason than to have fun wrecking stuff ;)
Just remember - CoT is in the spirit of CoH, it is not CoH!
Mayhem Missions.
'nuff said.
