While it is a simple enough idea, I have seen many MMOs that fail to incorporate this idea into the game. Chances are that you will group with people that are not in the same SG you are in, and you will want to have a discussion with them as a group rather than individually through private messages, or perhaps, in sufficiently large SGs, you may need an additional channel for officers (supposing one isn't already planned). I am not talking about group chat here, but the ability to create and name chat channels so that you and a group of friends can speak about whatever it is you want to talk about without getting flooded by overworld / zone chat.

Custom Chat Channels
They're basing the chat system on the Jabber protocol, so custom chat channels are pretty much implicit. The trick is going to be getting the right folks in your channel.
Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...
Good to know, I guess I missed it somewhere in the forums. While we may not have complete control over who enters a channel, the common rule is as follows:
The first rule of custom chat channels is we do not talk about custom chat channels.
Simple enough.
Depends on the chat channel though.
If a chat channel is set to private, then I can see a perfectly valid reason to keep it out of the general "channel listings" that could well be present.
However, I would also say that having "open global chat channels" should also be an option and so get "listed" for all and sundry to join.
Custom chat channels, both publicly joinable and invite-only private ones, are a must. Preferably with color-coding to make distinguishing between them easy.
