Cryptic Studios Layoffs

Bad news for Cryptic today. They laid off 18 people, about 14% of their work force. The layoffs included Matt Miller and the Star Trek Online community manager.

Dang it, Matt's one of those guys I'd love to hire but can't.

EDIT: fixed percentage.

Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...

M... Matt?

Matt Miller is in the market for a new job?

I know, I know, but I can dream, can't I :)?

Honestly, Matt Miller at MWM has been a fantasy of mine from day one, I think his work after Jack left CoH was just brilliant. He really knows how to work with a community to grow and develop a game after launch (unlike Jack). And he's just nads deep in the Superhero genre.

I don't think Matt would be

I don't think Matt would be turned away if he'd offered to volunteer some of his experience to the project

The real problem with being

The real problem with being able to bring Matt Miller onboard with MWM is ... the All Grey To Me Factor ... and the fact that there isn't any possible way for MWM to pay Matt enough to capture his full time attention. The man is just to valuable/experienced to work for nothing as a volunteer.

Now, as a CONSULTANT who was conversant with the ins and outs of the City of Heroes game over its lifespan, he'd be practically invaluable for "Lessons Learned" over time. But that's more a matter of mining his knowledge to learn things than it is a matter of "hiring" him to work on City of Titans as a Developer. A subtle but important difference, methinks.

18 people = ~14% makes sense

18 people = ~14% makes sense if you're starting with a crew of around 130.
18/130 = 0.1384

Still, that's about 1 in every 7 staffers ... gone.

When roman legions needed to exact mass punishments, they would decimate their own, putting 1 in 10 to death. No wonder the losses are described as being a "slaughter" and that the blame for them is being laid at PWE's doorstep (where they no doubt belong).

You don't lose 1 out of every 7 people on staff and maintain a high state of morale among the survivors.

To quote Megatron from Beast Wars ... "This does not inspire confidence. No."

I would ecstatically

I would ecstatically contribute to a fund towards consultation fees for Posi.

While I have full faith in the CoT devs and want them at the helm, I do think that the more they can pick Matt's brain, the better.

And this might be a window of opportunity to get him for some consulting before he gets locked down into another gig that doesn't let him do outside consulting.

Of course, I have no real idea what is going on behind the scenes, so I could be totally wrong, but it doesn't hurt to put it out there :D.

This is a passion project for CoT developers.. I'd think that it lines up with Matt's passions. If he could only offer his time for a brief moment I think it'd do the game well.

I also do NOT think he's good "at the helm". No offense, but CoT and MWM have leadership and vision in place and we don't know yet if Matt's vision lines up with that.

Some members of the CoT team

Some members of the CoT team I'm sure and some of us who've back the CoT project may not hold Matt as such a OMG MUST HAVE presense, if not think even less for him as a dev.

Positron was not a universally loved dev (at least in terms of choices made) and if he wanted to help CoT he could've started that way back when.

Understandable, everyone sees things differently and has different opinions and preferences. Just a couple of points.

1) I didn't agree with every decision that Matt/Posi made either, but how often are you going to agree with everything anyone does? I personally thought that over all he did a spectacular job, and, regardless, he was undeniably a huge part of making the game that we were all sad to lose, from start to finish.

2) We don't know what has or hasn't gone on behind the scenes, but if Matt did help back at the beginning, you can bet your britches it needed to be strictly behind closed doors and we'll never know. I don't think I need to explain why.

But, to each their own, it's highly unlikely that it could possibly happen anyway--just wishful thinking on my part :P.

My thought was just more a long the lines of people possibly giving Matt Miller to much credit on what he could do for CoT.

Well, I was being a bit

Well, I was being a bit overly effusive. But I do think getting a chance to get his thoughts on things couldn't hurt, even if the devs don't agree with or use all of them.

Actually Matt was involved in

Actually Matt was involved in two of the best newer rounds of content in STO; the Klingon arc and the Romulan expansion. They are seriously the best things that STO has done in awhile and, in the example of the Klingon arc, are pretty straight with canon (which some complain about with STO).
I think the consensus of the community would weigh heavily on Matt's side versus his CoH predecessor (Jack) in terms of vision. That being said, it's a non-starter with us because we are a volunteer organization. We wouldn't say no to him offering to advise us or something, however. ;)
