In most games I have played, when it comes to choosing the colors of costume pieces (let's say a chest armor piece) I would choose a finish then add colors.
I.E.
Material = metal
Main color 1 = grey
Main color 2 = blue
Detail color 1 = gold
Detail color 2 = black
That example would give me a "shiney" colors for all colors picked. Even if some of the colors (say main 2 was a undershirt, and detail 2 were straps) obviously not ment to be metal.
My suggestion (I hope it's not too late to suggest, if you havent thought of this already) is that you pick the material and color at the same time.
I.E.
Main color 1 = metallic grey
Main color 2 = cloth blue
Detail color 1 = metallic gold
Detail color 2 = leather black
This way it offers more options for players as they customize their characters costumes. It was always a pet peeve of mine that alot of costume pieces locked into one material type would look so much better, if not more realistic, if they were more than one material.

As long as I can make it look like pleather, I'll be happy :)
I believe we've seen in a video clip that different sections of the costume can have differing textures. I know the video posted today that was the option to show at PAX instead of taking a setup to stream shows something like that in one portion of the costume creator.
(insert pithy comment here)
This is a good point - thanks for mentioning it. If we had something like this back in CoH it would have single-handedly solved one of my biggest costuming pet peeves with the game... the lack of "shiny panties" for making complete "shiny" leotard outfits.
Let's hope you're right about this and that it makes it into the final game.
Pleather? Bah! You can keep your crude Naugahyde... I'll only be using the finest Corinthian leather. ;)

I just want my silcone paint shiny finish like Catwoman :)
Donegal tweed all the way!

I did not see anything definite in the video... here's to hoping they can still do something like what I suggested.

I'm assuming you're talking more like Michelle Pfeiffer's version (looks like PVC to me):

I like Anne Hathaway's "modern" hi-tech version too:

Then you've got various "wet look lycras", pleathers, and other materials:

I've always been partial to the Mord Sith style myself:

Looking for these pics for this post reminded me I actually opted for the "Everything is Better in Plaid" Add-On more or less to make sure the game included something like the Mord Sith texture. I've actually not heard back from MWM about this yet but as long as the game includes options like this I'd probably be happy regardless. The Mord Sith outfit would benefit in particular from what Duke Booter was talking about because you'd definitely need some parts of it to be real leather while other parts could be lycra/PVC/vinyl.

Yup. Like the shiney. It's the one thing I love about CO, tights with metal (shiney) option. :)
Same here.
However the really detailed costume parts just don't look right when you have to choose one material for the entire piece.

My "perfect vision" would be that every clothing item (where under shirts and such would be completely separate items from what you wear over them) would be divided into "regions" (for a lack of a better term) and each region, preferable individually nameable, would have its own material and color selection. Outside of material selection this is how it's essentially done today in games. It would most likely be good enough at this point but to make it a bit more flexible you would be able to add one movable rotatable re-sizable layer on top of that, potentially skipping some regions, for pattern selection with its own material and color selections ("base color" being transparent), kinda like APB but only one single pre-set pattern. This would mean that f.i a stripes pattern would be used for all of vertical diagonal horizontal and every other angle of stripes, but also for any thickness of stripes even going so far as the half-and-half pattern in "thickness".
Yes it was visible in a recent video, I remember that because I liked it very much, I think this feature is already implemented.
Here, you don't even need to watch the video, the first opening-image before you click "play" shows a shirt made of cloth and metal:

But to be more sure, check the video at 5:00 mins, and at 5:05 you will see a window showing a shoulder being customized in the material partially, with it becoming half metal half cloth.

Material Editing is going to be one of the best parts of the creator if not the best. I get giddy playing around with it in dev mode as we build it.
Just sayin'... :P

Yeah - being able to not only play with colors and patterns but also materials/textures will be awesome. I'm really looking forward to seeing exactly what we can do with the creator.
As much as I've "stubbornly advocated" to get various esoteric options/features for CoT over the years I'm actually likely to be frightfully easy to please by the simple things once the game finally arrives. For instance (as I mentioned earlier in this thread) as long as you've solved the age-old CoH problem of allowing for a full "shiny" leotard (with the same shiny texture on both the top, bottom and glove parts like the ones below) I'll probably happily overlook a crap-ton of other lingering costume problems/deficiencies. ;)

That second one is exactly what I want in a material for my main's leotard!
