certificate

Chrome is blocking the website because the certificate expired today. Edge however will let you plow on in. I'm sure you are aware as I'm probably not the first but just in case you were not aware.

WELL THAT WAS FUN.

WELL THAT WAS FUN.

Apparently my auto-renew script failed silently all last month, the certificate wasn't renewed, and it finally expired today. Then a misconfiguration prevented manual renewal until I fixed that.

All happy now.

Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...

Yeah, I totally astroturfed

Yeah, I totally astroturfed you guys on this. Good response time though, you're a very dedicated web manager. Do you have a "check for website happy" script? IE one that would detect if a browser is not loading the site properly and send an alert? In my mind there's a "Guppi" that says "Anomaly detected" in an Ackbar voice when the website stops working.

I hope everyone had a nice Fourth!

Your use of 'IE' in a sentence about browsers confused me in an amusing way for a second. :-)

Spurn all ye kindle.

Unfortunately, that's a bit beyond my current skills. I guess I could try to roll something like that to run from my home machine, but the tough part is figuring out what to test, that those tests actually test what you want them to test and not something else less useful, and making sure the tester doesn't fail silently itself.

So, for now, our "is website happy" canary takes the form of an internal MWM message from leadership saying, "Why is the web site down?" We regret the inconvenience.

Considering we won't support IE but would make the effort with Edge...

IE is something I use a lot

IE is something I use a lot on the internet but not so much in real life.

I guess in my mind the script would punch the address into the address bar for FF/Edge/chrome/opera/whatever and then check to see that it loads the same for each. You could be as basic as comparing a screenshot of each browser against the others and/or against the previous check. If ever you got a error then you'd get a "anomaly detected" email. That would throw an error if someone posts a legit update too. Unless you had an offline copy to compare against.

A quick search shows that there are some tools out there that can do something like this and more I'm not much of a web developer so when it says checks for 508 errors my eye's start to roll back in my head. But it might make more sense to you. These are some of the first things I found. No idea if they are useful or not. https://www.powermapper.com/ https://www.nagios.org/

Nagios is for making sure

Nagios is for making sure your servers are up, not front-end testing. Someday we'll have enough machines in one place to make setting it up worth it.

We've got things that are supposed to let us know when the server breaks. They didn't work in a timely manner. That's another thing to fix.

Like I said. I don't know

Like I said. I don't know what I'm looking for when I look at these things. I just figured there has to be something out there that would monitor things like that. I know enough to be dangerous(obnoxious) and little more.

Technically the issue that

Technically the issue that occurred could be checked with something like Nagios. After all it's a request-response type message. Does the page throw an error when loading? A web-page load is just a call to a server, and the client throws a catchable error. Whether it is visible is not something you could completely cover but typical issues like expiring certs can be checked for, since you can emulate the client call. Nagios is designed for that kind of thing as well as the checking of the usual processes and services et al. I'm not sure it's the best tool for the job, but it's configurable, free and can do the job. I can ask around if you need some support. I'm not a web expert but I have access to loads of them, as well as every other kind of technical expert you can name, and I'm happy to probe for solutions to problems, if that would help.

It's all about community, after all 😊

I'm not saying that Nagios

I'm not saying that Nagios can't do it. I'm saying we've got some bigger things to untangle before a Nagios install becomes viable. Details I'm not at liberty to discuss right now. We'll definitely have to get to that point before launch.

I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

I did not ask if you could read it. I asked why we can not post to it.

I had similar problems myself. I get the following error:

Forgot to reply to this.

Forgot to reply to this. Should be fixed now.

Really weird bug involving our spam filters and the URL including the word "girls". I changed the URL (title unchanged) and it's fixed.

There are some other threads with similar collisions and I'll be fixing those by hand over the next week. If you need any fixed sooner, PM me a link to the page.
