Ideas for a introductory

Ideas for a introductory meeting and or adventure?

Terrorist plot? Super villain attack? Gala with fancy clothes spoiled by Aether Pirates?

Maybe even a resurgent attempt to create Hurricane Atlas on the 20th anniversary of the fateful storm?

They're introductory meeting

They're introductory meeting could be just that. A meeting. 20 years of paper work and they (the bureaucrats) finally got it done. Welcome to your new home, here's the rest of your team, etc.

Then a mission. Possibly breaking out in the middle of the meet and greet, or when things start to get awkward.

Maybe a supervillain with themed henchmen and a doomsday device

"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."

I like the idea of having

I like the idea of having some space for the characters to just talk, and having an intro meeting, briefing, and the like is something that would need to happen. By which I mean, even if the first RP thread ends up being something else, chances are that such a meeting would have happened anyway, just off-camera. This being the case, the decision becomes whether it is off-camera, or should be played out. And I suspect most people would play it out. The intro meeting thing is a fairly standard setup for RP threads, but in this case, given the formality of the government-backed team, a certain amount of... organisation, orderliness, structure, etc. would be expected.

For a group like this, it doesn't make sense that the first interaction between the crew would be in a bar brawl or something, and if they're thrown straight into a mission with no 'get to know one another' or joint training first, that would harm suspension of disbelief. Unless lack of preparedness happens due to an emergency or crisis, 'before the team is ready' - that's possible, of course.

I like the idea. There's so many questions I have, though. :D

How old is the android, are they a recent creation from the past few years, or are they from the Cold War era? Is this the work of the government, the private sector, or a lone mad scientist? Is the technology super-advanced Earth science, and if so, where does it come from - are there predecessor androids, is the tech based on other hardlight stuff or old military projects? Or is it some kind of alien technology? What kind of personality does this android have?

Sorry, but, you know, so many possibilities. I'll love to see where you go with this.

See now I'm thinking meet and greet then they'd have a training session that then gets interrupted by a supervillain.

The whole "Is this part of the training?" Trope... Thing.

I'm typically wary about suggesting that a name be in another language for the sake of being in another language, especially one that I or other people in RP might not speak. In that sense, I support a straightforward name. (This isn't a veiled dig at Gladatoria's Medjay or Foradain's Twilight/Huang Hun - I dunno about Egyptian, but I do speak Chinese, and I like what Foradain did, very poetic).

It's Russia, though... I kind of figure they would have a Russian name for a Russian android, or maybe numbering. But of course it depends on whether it's a government project (and which era of government), private or whatever.

For example, in the real world, the Russians have a superdeformed chibi robot tank--- I mean, an unmanned ground combat vehicle (UCGV), the Uran-9, by JSC 766 UPTK and Rosoboronexport. Yes, I had to google that to get the names and numbers right. But you see what I mean? :P

Medjay (Mazoi, Madjai in other spellings) hails from the New Kingdom era of Egypt, and from the Nubian language. The idea with the name was that the goddess Neith wouldn’t make much of a distinction between a protector of Egypt and its people (a Medjay in ancient times) and superhero, thus her christening.

And in-character, Safiya always liked hearing about the legend of elite warriors for justice who fairly policed and protected their people, also influencing the decision.

An introductory adventure

An introductory adventure involving the team members gathering and meeting though does sound good, getting to meet and interact, before being set up at the Duncan building and sent on their first mission.

I considered it but the Russian names I was finding just didn’t look very good.

For example, “light” is “legkiy”, which seems awkward. “Projector” is “Proyektor”. “Shiny” is “blestyashchiy”...

So I gave up. :)

It's too bad ya'll have decided to limit the team to only 9. An alien would make an interesting addition to the team. Someone with very little/no exposure to humans and their cultures/governments.

Putting yourself in another persons shoes emotionally is something that everyone has to experience eventually. It's part of learning to be a human being. Roleplayers do it for fun.

Could always pull a Justice League cartoon and have the first mission be connected to an Alien who then joins the team.

The point seems to be representing your countries interests in a global task. That entire point is lost if people on the team have no connection to a world power.

Id prefer not to water down the concept. The focus right now allows for a different type of story.

Though Im not against a team size of whatever.

I don’t think the group itself needs to be limited to 9, it’s just that there is a “core” of 9 members. But there would surely be members outside of that core.

An extraterrestrial member would bring an interesting perspective and I could see them contributing outside of the core group.

I was thinking we could do

I was thinking we could do something akin to the opening scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron. The scene could open with the team aboard whatever vehicle they might be using to get to their destined location to fight some generic bad guys. There could be a roll call of sorts, all of which describe a character's powers and abilities and how they can use them to progress the battle forward to apprehend whatever (probable throw-away) villain they may be trying to capture. And probably in the midst of the major battle, The Team could just be trading off lines of dialogue that suggest a flavor of what their personality is like.

This is just a quick write-up on my end given that I haven't contributed to much of this discussion since it started.

"If I am to die in battle, Remember me for who I was and not what I've become..."

Yeah, the whole inspiration for this is taken from theidea of the Core 7 of the Justice League, depicted in Justice League Unlimited And Young Justice.

A odd-numbered body of members with lying power that set the course and tone for the team, as not make it a wild managerie of characters with no real management or oversight.

An alien would be welcome for the reasons you and Atama touched on, and I would still like to hear the concept, not to mention the team isn’t finalized yet and there is no reason to say that a country could not ‘adopt’ an alien character, especially if they perform great acts of service for said nation or country.

So I guess now the decision comes between us deciding if we want to do a more tame, social RP to start, or jump right in with an off camera meeting and into action against cannon fodder villains.

I am partial to option a, though.

I can put the alien to the side for now. The other ideas I've been considering are a ninja-type (badass human or otherwise), some kind of earth elementalist (possibly Indian?), or a monk-style character. With some wiggling, I could layer two or maybe even all three of those concepts.

An earth elementalist could be promising, and we would have all major regions covered with a character from India (I believe).

You could make him a stealth-trained monk from India who has earth control powers. Imagine a guy who can meld into the ground then reappear behind or beneath an enemy. Or just walk through a stone or concrete wall that melts around him. He could even fuse with stone to climb a wall or hide in it.

He could be named “Dhara” after the Hindu god of the earth (though he doesn’t have to actually be related to the god in any way, just a nickname).

While I'm partial to the

While I'm partial to the meeting-based opening, having an in medias res action opening is good too. I have no strong feelings in that regard.

I'd say there hasn't been strong discussion regarding a numerical limit for the group. Essentially, Gladatoria has said - 'It's a Core 9 members, with later expansion', and... to be fair, most of us haven't gone on to disagree, which implies, but does not explicitly confirm, that people are okay with the nine slot thing. But there hasn't been actual discussion.

My feeling is that if we're at a point where someone wants to participate in the RP thread, and is being 'kept out' due to some arbitrary limit, then the limit needs to be revisited, especially in a context where people do come and go, drop in and drop out, due to the simple realities of logistics.

The alien thing is a different question. I brought up the 'strange/alien' being thing myself, and I absolutely 100% agree it is an archetype of Avenger/Justice League mixed groups, conceptually. There is ultimately no hard barrier to an alien or dimensional traveler, whatever, being included in a group. Explanations can be invented. Situations can be arranged. As people have discussed, the first RP thread could even focus heavily on this character's introduction.

The question is whether folks are fine with it in the context of the whole 'country representative' motif for a team, which isn't so strong in most depictions of the Avengers and Justice League - though the country thing has mattered for some versions of both groups. in comics. The question is whether that's a direction the group wants to take, in roleplay. On the one hand, it could be said to distract from narratives, on the other, the point is to discuss the dynamics of Earth as a community, the challenges of international cooperation, etc, and having a character with an outsider's perspective and viewpoint is potentially helpful to those things.

erm....

erm....

my idea specifically centers around X being in the RP as a key player to the entire 1st mission. A space alien recently arrived would have no country loyalty which would be fun to Rp trying to convince him/her/it to pick a country that fundamentally helps our characters country out.

Not one person has suggested X cant participate, its just a discussion of how to get an alien into an rp about earth country representatives.

This would all introduce our character, motivations, and personalities to each other without it being "go smash this thing".

Like I said, Core 9 was

Like I said, Core 9 was created as a starting point so we didn’t have like 20 heroes with no real direction or role running all over the place.

It’s existence serves the function of organization but is arbitrary, and I don’t want to bar anyone or make someone feel like they can’t join, that’s not right.

The idea of this team is a UN sponsored, national government influenced superhero crisis response team, but that’s just the way it starts. Who knows how or what it will end up being.

With that in mind, I’d love to hear both Moth and Xcel’s concepts, alien or not, not to mention that just about anything can be worked with.

But I don't want to screw up Steamy's idea either. Perhaps we could still do the alien storyline, just with it being an NPC?

Xselcier (and Sleepymoth)... well, play whatever you wanna play. :D

The monk idea sounds like great fun, and ultimately that's what matters. If that's what resonates with you, then I hope we're all able to work with you, in order to go with that. Likewise, I mean, we don't NEED to cram Sleepy into some kinda robot Russian holographic role unless the moth is indeed comfortable.

And as Xselcier says, there's always NPCs. Certainly a good point.

Having a global threat days

Having a global threat days before the actual implementation of the team could work well as an RP introduction.

The characters don't know eachother yet, there was supposed to be a meet and greet soon, but extreme circumstances warranted mobilizing the group early.

Then the team have to get to know eachother and learn to work together as a team in a crisis situation.

Could have some characters, who can't fly get to meet and talk on the jet ride to the crisis while others who can get there on their own meet and try and combat the threat.

Could be a big deal thing like Starro or something like the Kryptonian terraforming device from Man of Steel but out in international waters . Maybe some alien despot has laid claim to the earth and is trying to terraform it/steal the water/other resources from the earth.

What if they need something from the earths core? Maybe there's a rare element there unknown to us, but needed by the alien.

Tacos. You can’t find them anywhere else in the solar system.

They have come for our tacos and we cannot stop them.

Tacos aren't resources, they are product. Wherever humans go in the galaxy, there will be tacos. And pizza, and ice cream. Only stupid aliens raid for things that they can buy. ^_^

The hypothetical unknown rare element in the core might work. The aliens would need a way of detecting it, and there should be a reason they need it badly enough to risk enraging a species that has used nuclear weapons on their own kind. Of course, if taking the material from the core is not likely to leave a planet, they may think we won't be a problem afterward....

They'd have some sort of scanner tech to detect the element, and would likely be too arrogant to think the earth will put up much of a resistance. Compared to them and their technology, etc. They could be a race with some powers of their own. Possibly at least being stronger/more durable than humans.

I propose the element be

I propose the element be auritanium, a gold-colored, remarkably light but strong metal that works as a heat-resistant superconductor. And something I totally made up.

It can only be formed under intense heat and pressure, in an environment with no solar radiation, which is why it is only found in the core of the planet. Also, this auritanium in the core is what generates the magnetic field around the planet, which protects everything on the surface from solar wind and allows the planet to maintain its atmosphere. Even if the element were extracted without causing direct damage to the planet, there would be no way to sustain life afterward.

So, first they look for a planet with a magnetosphere, then they bring up their auritanium scanner, then they pick a landing spot to set up the extractor. I vote for Antarctica. No noisy locals (that they know of. There is a Lost Continent under that Ice, and maybe some leftover Vril), and lots of ice to carry away the waste heat.

From looking at the Spec

From looking at the Spec chart, it seems the closest I'll be able to get for Dhara is the Enforcer (Striker) a.k.a. Stalker. Powerset classifications would be Earth Melee and Earth Manipulation.

As for his team role, I was thinking of making him a fitness/meditation guru. He could probably also cover hand-to-hand/martial arts training, but that might step on Project's feet as Combat Specialist???

Thoughts?

Usually Bricks don't have much in the way of fighting style so that's fine if you want to handle hand to hand/martial arts training.

Should we do aliens, evil industrialist with killer robots, or maybe a summoned or unleashed monster or superpower?

I like the idea that maybe some countries are against the idea of money being used to form the team, said event happens, and then maybe funding for the initiative is approved?

My vote is for evil industrialist. At least it'll seem more personal and less likely of an event that would call for other heroes or super-teams for that matter to want/need to respond to a threat like alien invaders or some Kaiju monster.

While an Avengers or JLA

While an Avengers or JLA "Threat that no one hero could fight alone" style first mission sounds cool, we need to face the fact that this is not a normal team of heroes. I feel like we'd have to really stretch the narrative to explain how this group of multinational heroes just happens to come together in the right place at the right time.

Perhaps we could combine the concepts? A formal meet/gala that gets interrupted by a crisis? Just so ya know, I'm sitting here currently picturing our heroes fighting said threat in tuxes and ballgowns. :-D

And a gala interrupted by a crisis with a potential recurring villain could be cool? Fighting in tuxes and dresses is a cool trope as well (like the wedding fight in the CW superhero event for inspiration).

I had an idea that they face advanced war drones/robots, created by a defense contractor and industrialist Stanton Parrish, who argues that there is no need for heroes in an age where technology reigns supreme.

Hm, you know that actually wouldn't be a bad recurring villain. Especially one that's more grounded in the modern age where technology just keeps evolving with every passing year. I imagine he would or could even become somewhat invested in heroes or people in general who may utilize some sort of tech in the crime-fighting ventures. Viewing them as worthy subservients to aid in the production of his robots and such.

Yeah, he’s obsessed with technological advancement and testing his own genius and mechanical creations, hence why I pushed for the Initiative to be shelved or delayed in favor of using his own mechanical ‘Peacekeepers’, particularly with either a sentient Android named Armistice with barrier generation powers, or a powered armor suit with the same name (who may join the team at some point.).

That intro sounds like it could be fun. Although, I'd suggest Stanton take the modern Lex Luthor approach and always have an excuse/way to weasel out. With bots, you've got a lot of excuses to hide behind. Rogue programming, disgruntled employees, faulty circuitry, exposure to exotic radiation, terrorist hacking, AI rampancy. The list goes on and on.

So I've been thinking about the team and their roles.

I've realized that while Physical Trainer sounds useful, it's not really a field role. It's something he'd do to assist the the team and their staff during "off-hours".

As such, I've been thinking about his skills/training/powers and I've realized that he'd be probably be a pretty good recon guy. So I'm switching his team role to Reconnaissance.

I'd love to make a big Samoan looking dude who can sing like Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Izzy). I guess a more recent example of the desired look would be Maui from Moana. But I definitely want him to be a singer/chanter and a channeler of the Huna, or life force. There isn't much need for a control & support type superhero in the South Pacific, so he'd like to join some international group to put his powers to greater use.

His name is Kahuna
Powers: Uses Song & Chants to manipulate life force known as Huna (Power Control/Vampiric Emanation Support).
Role: Operator(Director)

He is a spiritual leader at home in Hawaii and would spend his time going back and forth between there and any League HQ that might exist in Titan City. Hopefully some tech savvy associate has managed to create a teleport by now. While in Titan City I think he would forego having a secret identity and instead use his celebrity to start a spiritualism movement. I think he and Dhara would have some interesting discussions.

I'd say 'Public and Government Relations' is a better description of what I have in mind - especially considering Huckleberry's proposed character... but I won't complain about that detail. Thanks for keeping the list running.

"Gladatoria" wrote:

Gladatoria's correct. We should be fair to The Hybrid, but until Hybrid lets us know, we're guessing.

I really like this, because it fills the whole 'sneaky' role many fictional superteams have. The Batman role, the one who's already on the inside. The one who knows how to be quiet and subtle. This meshes well with the monk/martial artist archetype.

"Huckleberry" wrote:

"Gladatoria" wrote:

It could outright be a PR role without clashing with what my character would do. Decade isn't super charismatic, which is why I have a slight issue about other people, not me, boiling down what Decade would be good at to 'PR'.

Decade would step up to liaise or negotiate with local police and government. Decade would be familiar with the conventions regarding, say, coordinating a search for a group of supervillain robot pirates crossing international and EEZ waters. Decade may know how to organise a press conference and write a press release.

None of that means Decade's any good at getting in front of a microphone and talking to a crowd. To use an RPG analogy, if Decade were an Exalted character, I'd have all the dots in Bureaucracy, maybe some in Socialize, but little in Performance.

"Gladatoria" wrote:

I like this, and I'm slightly more in favour of fighting a human/terrestrial supervillain rather than an alien invasion. Fighting a supervillain thematically ties back into the Hurricane Atlas thing, because that was a hurricane exacerbated by a supervillain (Cumulus Rex). I mean, an alien invasion also could work, it also conveys the 'all countries must work together' idea, but a single supervillain is a more direct callback.

It may well be that Parrish doesn't even object to the idea of countries cooperating, what he finds annoying and intellectually lazy... is that the governments of the world have decided that the best way to cooperate is to just find a bunch of superhumans and stick them on a fancy plane. The countries involved could have, say, created a joint rapid-response paramilitary unit drawing from law enforcement, emergency workers, etc. from around the world, outfitted with the best technology. But no... they made a superteam. It's the same 'leave it up to the heroes' nonsense, all over again.

Parrish sees it as a waste of

Parrish sees it as a waste of resources and the talents of regular people, the humans who have to clean up the mess and deal with the fallout of what these super humans leave behind.

If his actions brand him a super villain (assuming they can be traced back to him, of course) so be it, it’s a mark he’ll take as a cost to bringing the world back to the control of people who started it, extraordinary but regular humans.

Think modern Lex Luthor (particularly the Young Justice cartoon portrayal) and Obadiah Stane as inspirations for this character.

In regards to my android idea

In regards to my android idea. I was thinking something like SOMA where the AI was basically an guardian or keeper of experimental brain upload technology. The first of their kind, but the brain uploads at some point failed and got corrupted, the AI tried to fix them, but some of the brain uploads got mixed up and subsumed by their code which caused them to achieve sapience. They want to be an hero because they want to make up for what was essentially accidentally killing people. In regards to their origins, they were made by an well-meaning Russian scientist, and while the Russian government is wary of them the government wants to be represented country wise by the Atlas Initiative. I am not sure if I want to keep their ''hardlight construct'' powerset tho, or what their powerset would even be? Mechanical constructs perhaps from the scientist brain uploads they accidentally consumed? Or maybe one of the uploads was a person whom was experimenting with hardlight technology.

I think this character might be interesting as they might be fraught with fears that they are not only not human but are instead mind wise are some sort of Frankenstein combination of various people. I do have a name for them though which may or may not be fitting, Wintermute. Wintermute didn't choose the name, it was chosen by some people that found them in the aftermath of the brain uploading incident gone wrong. It's technically an villainous name for what they thought was an malicious AI but Wintermute themselves is not offended by the name and in fact wants to try to make the name an heroic AI's name in-universe if that makes sense.

That's my idea of an android character, hopefully it didn't disappoint.

Another idea I have is a mysterious or endearing doll/knight type that uses an large sewing needle as an weapon, think like an very stylized looking sword. The only issue with that is I am not sure how'd you make them non-lethal.

I very much like the idea of a redemption idea for a hero, in addition to the guilt driving them to be a better hero.

I also like the idea that mechanically Russia is putting their best foot forward with a hero that is programmed with good intentions vs the Americans who are using a superhuman solider. They could even work the angle or idea that it’s ‘more American warmongering’.

Hardlight constructs are possible, maybe force projection and barriers? Hardlight projections could be maybe representative of using the images or representations of the many minds it absorbed as weapons for good?

The scientists themselves

The scientists themselves were all great minds but failing bodies for whatever reason, the test was to see if they could do an form of immortality or to at very least save some people with life-threatening conditions that would eventually die, via uploading the brains to another more mechanical and optimal body.

Of course the experiment failed as the storage files for the brain uploads got corrupted somehow (perhaps an hacker/computer wizard inserted an virus or something) and it went wrong. Hardlight technology could go hand in hand with stuff like forcefields I think. Lets go with that. And yeah their constructs/minions resembling some of the people they accidentally subsumed might be a good idea.

Does he experience any errors

Does he experience any errors in interacting with other heroes due to the condition of its mind? And what role do you think he would play with the team?

No, or atleast not enough to

No, or atleast not enough to be an detriment. As for role hmmmm...I am honestly not sure about that. I could make them an commander or an operator. I guess an buffer with the force shields? Utility, like giving the other members more mobility via creating bridges, teleporters, etc.?

I meant more on the team, as for what they can bring to the initiative-as these 9 were brought together for a reason.

Honestly not sure, I was

Honestly not sure, I was thinking they'd be an associate member. Not one of the core 9. Someone already has scientist and tracking so I can't do that. Maybe Wintermute would be the one operating the comms/communications? Keeping track of everyone and keeping eye on their statuses?

They can't directly be in combat I think (they can take a hit but have no combat programming, perhaps training could help them), just send minions and provide forcefields from afar.

Hmmm, would that be a comment

Hmmm, would that be a comment on Russia staging a sort of diplomatic protest by NOT being in the core group, or more due to the fact that the slot is technically filled.

Again, like I said nothing is finalized yet and I’m still waiting to hear back from the Hybrid on concept development or any information.

Communications and HQ operations would be a cool role I believe, especially with their potentially to literally provide Overwatch and protection with their abilities if a mission goes awry, and the potentiality for hard light assistants and such around the base and in the field.

Slot is technically filled although yeah I imagine Russia and some other countries may feel tense at not being part of the main group. I always kinda wondered why the Justice League never had that as an issue considering most of the main League are America based heroes barring maybe Wonder Woman.

I would say mainly because

I would say mainly because the writers operated from an American based prospective and plot, even with the introduction of international heroes they never seemed to address the more political aspects of superhero membership.

First: Wintermute is an awesome name. It evokes imagery of vast areas of Russia; cold and quiet.

Second: For a team like this, communications would be critical. An AI would be ideal for that role. Wintermute could also monitor and aggregate electronic information feeds to alert the team about incidents they should be aware of, and maybe to discover patterns that might forewarn of future calamities.

Third: I like the background that Wintermute is a failed attempt at achieving immortality by its creators. That it insists in being its own being and to find a purpose of its own is noble.

I think Dr. Thunder in particular would be fascinated by Wintermute. He’s not a tech genius (his area of expertise is natural science, with a strong background in physics, geology, and chemistry) but he appreciates advanced technology and he’d probably want to consult with Wintermute frequently, for example when gathering climate information or working on a modeling program. As a colleague, not a tool.

It's also possible that... as an artificial intelligence, the character has multiple physical bodies or drones they can operate, if you'd rather do that as 'pets' rather than hardlight constructs. The way I see it, the AI and brain uploads thing is the core part of the character, the hardlight/forcefield part is not. Other 'power' gimmicks could be used if you prefer. Though light is neat, of course.

It has come up. The 1987-1996 Justice League International (also Justice League America, Justice League Europe) used this as a plot point in various places. This was the era where the idea of the United Nations endorsing or supporting the Justice League was introduced.

The 2011-2012 Justice League International relaunch focused on the United Nations aspect to a greater degree - the 2011 JLI team includes Chinese, Russian, Brazilian, British, etc. members appointed by a UN body. The 2011-2012 JLI book was explicitly supposed to focus on the politics aspect, to the extent that it was reviewed by CFR's Foreign Affairs.

But generally these plotlines have not been commercially successful.

I think by now the trope of the omniscient hacker, overwatch, operator, etc. is understood - the voice over the comms providing information, analysis, and coordination. It's even a thing in comics, with, say, Oracle. Even if DC has Barbara Gordon as Batgirl these days. My suggested telepath character (Decade) could certainly connect people, but that's just literal communications, it doesn't include pulling down building blueprints, checking feeds from traffic cameras, searching through databases, and so on - that stuff should be a cornerstone of contemporary superhero storytelling.

As far as making sure it

As far as making sure it relates to the core theme, I feel hardlight projections and manifestations of the AI’s multiple housed minds as manifesatations and constructs fits, and can even be part of how it uses its abilities in a communications and Overwatch capability.

Can’t communicate in a remote African dialect but need to ensure villagers get out of safe distance from a bomb? Use a hard light manifestation of yourself to guide them like in a video game. Need to also update your team on where the enemy is headed in the same mission? Split off a copy and give them the intel while running communications.

Wintermute sounds pretty cool

Wintermute sounds pretty cool. I could definitely see some interesting theological/philosophical discussions taking place between it (him?), Dhara, and Kahuna.

Putting yourself in another persons shoes emotionally is something that everyone has to experience eventually. It's part of learning to be a human being. Roleplayers do it for fun.
