It matters not for we all are

It matters not for we all are one with the great stellar amerikatt. We are all individual hairs on her infinite blue fur, united by love and duty into becoming one inter and outer dimensional kitty. Only by pleasing amerikatt with offerings of yarn balls and belly rubs will your life be inriched and fulfilled.

The ancient Egyptians worshipped cats and our American forefathers continued this tradition through their Masonic rites and set up a government where a cat can lead the people. The American stars and stripes were designed by Ross particularly for a feline to wear, this is a fact...which I completely made up but which doesn't make it any less truthful.

Can't speak for everyone else - but I just grab something that I think I can do and run with it. Titan - the one I just played with, for example I actually started that about a week ago but I saw it the day it rolled down and kind of passed on it at first.
It just didn't hit me as something I could bring around in any decent way. A couple days later I was flipping through images for something else and saw this model on a runway with this massive cloak flowing behind her, two images later... theres Matt Damon with this cock-sure joking expression... and it all fit in my head what I wanted to do.
I did see your request and I'm still kind of digesting it and mulling it over how I'd pull off the look of the tuxedo/circuitry/material. That's to be honest going to be a royal pain to draw those patterns over and over and over. One of the reasons I hate anything in chain mail, is that I have to draw it. I seriously think that's why they redid Captain America with the leather/Kevlar look - chain mail just was too big a pain to draw so Artists everywhere gathered into a secret cabal -- pooled their .30 cents royalty payments together and paid off a studio to make movies so people would forget that's what the original costume was made out of.
All kidding aside...
Obviously - I can just draw it/sketch it out straight based on your description but I work from references. I'd usually spend a day or so gathering ones that speak to an image in my head. But, as I mentioned above - I just started a new job so ... that's gonna suck up 8-10hrs of my life six days a week so... won't have a lot of time but I did read the description and was considering it.
Mostly the challenge of it is what appeals to me, and I have an idea - for what I want to try to deal with his circuits in his tux.
I created a quickie brush in Photoshop... give you some idea what it would look like ...

I see- so how art gets selected varies from artist to artist...

I am also very thankful that you took on my character. If the box-like runes drive you nuts, then you can always just create a golden grid over the black tux- that should be much easier! Feel free to go nuts or take your time- either way, I'm psyched to witness your final product. (however accurate it may be)

Best of luck!

My character would be 4'9, blonde hair and blue eyes, wings 15-20 in wingspan, the angel kind in white. He has swords, i'm not sure what kind yet, and a nice big shield, with the Russian imperial eagle in the center, Russian flag colors. his uniform is doused in medals, he can fly, has one leg and a can with a dragons head on it. he wears something out of assassin's creed, all black, lots of buckles and straps, a nice pair of jeans, a trenchcoat like thing that he could use to hide his wings.

Indeed and frankly to be expected since we are not all one giant collective Borg-Artz entity... yet.

I know some here like to take a basic outline and try to bring it to life for the first time and, while I've done that a few times, I find lately I prefer fully realized characters with a great concept and backstory. You know the kind that when you see it you wish you had thought of it first?
The character I've drawn most often (Caemgen) is not even one of my own but I so enjoy the concept that I feel like I could see him teaming with any one my heroes on a mission in game and know how he would react to most situations. He's fully fleshed out, has an unusual backstory, a supporting cast of heroes and even a roster of villains that oppose them at every turn.

Of course he also has reference sheets, plenty of short stories and a metric ton of art which don't hurt either.

Well it's really not organized or anything if that's what you mean. I mean, there isn't really a 'selection' process per se... at least nobody told me about it if there was. LOL :)

Anyways... I haven't had a lot of time to work on this. Barely even had time to check messages here lately. Working 12-16 hr days for the most part last two weeks. But I had some time tonight to play with it a bit.

Hey CR, when you said "Of course he also has reference sheets, plenty of short stories and a metric ton of art which don't hurt either." Where do people post these stories and bios at? Aside from this great website of course!

I only ask since the characters on deviantart all seem to belong to certain groups with their universes all neatly mapped out. Most I recognize from virtue but they're some I never seen but never the less are mind blowing in design.

Caemgen/Kaemgen has a (couple?) Deviant Art page and I seem to recall a personal website, plus he was a prolific poster on the CoT Forums. He commissioned art from Many skilled artists. Here, we can run a search on DA: http://www.deviantart.com/?q=kaemgen It got so that his main characters became... iconic. And Rule 34, too.

There (used to be?) is 'Virtueverse' and TitanNetwork that had tools for collecting and displaying character information. Seriously, Players used dozens of different methods for publishing information about their characters. There's websites out there for... Everything.

I've been content with Photobucket (and now Deviant Art) and keeping my Biographies in a word document, although I did track my characters using CIT: http://cit.cohtitan.com/profile/1892 That may be why I'm only getting character art Now.

Be Well!

The Nightmare requests his glory be immortalized!

http://mediumsizedrobot.com/primusdatabase.com/images/c/c2/Nightmare2.jpg Helmet and Cape
http://oi40.tinypic.com/9hkj1x.jpg Rest of the Suit.

A few specifics
The gloves are of the same blue as the rest of the suit and have a similar design to this save for the stamp with the handprint (imagine the glove shows no skin as well) and red rivets at the knuckles. The chest has an Iron Man-esque core which lightly glows red. In the CoH version, it's visible right above the crossed arms. The cape is in the scalloped style made popular by Batman and follows a gradient of blue which darkens as it travels down. The boots from CoH were the perfect style but I always regretted how they were more plastic looking than the rest of the suit. The helmet has to be the hardest thing to get right in any game. It's a simpler (read: No where near as much of the tech fluff) version of Cobra Commander's with the signature HELMET CROOOOOOOOOOOOOWN! All in all, the complexities of the armor aren't really that numerous as you might think..a little more than CoH showed, but not that much more.

Mike. I love you.

Mike. I love you.

I
LOVE
YOU.

I hadn't even thought of bringing in the harness the cape is attached to from CO, but that drawing damn near makes me want it in CoT now.

It does need refining such as the red bits at the bracers from the CoV version (which I see you've drawn the base for :D) and the not armor bits (between bracers and upper arm pad; neck area; between subligar and thigh armor) are actually blackish. Used that piece in CO and coloring because sadly they didn't have one that actually covered the entirety without looking silly (closest had vents all over it but was too small .-.) CoV's coloring limits were a little hard to work with since you only got 2 colors and usually what you wanted colored affected what you DIDN'T.

Gloves are what really stood out at first. Rivets need to be made just a bit smaller. You have it perfect on the thumb, the rest are a bit too big to look functional :P Smackwell here is wearing a pair of gloves that is effectively the same design as I wear but just missing the rivets.

BUT OF COURSE... all of that pales in comparison to the image of the mighty...

HELMET CROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN!

Eat your beard out, Dr. Tyche. Helmet Crown deserves the glory >:D MWAHAHAHAHA!

(It's a little thick on the left side, though I assume that's a yet to be erased part of the bigger circle which was slowly defined to form the mighty helmet crown.)

EDIT: silly me.. I forgot to tell you the red rivets are also at the knuckles instead of halfway up the fingers.

Revenge is motivation enough. At least it's honest...

No Problem - just had a spare bit of time an thought I'd give it a bash here.

Agreed the nubbies on the knuckles were too big but was planning on hiding them behind energy. I have a love hate thing going with hands - and it's easier to hide them :) But I'll give another stab at it later this week.

Subligar ... hmmm... always thought that was another name for a string bikini. I suppose I could do one of him that way, I mean... "Guys of CoT Calendar" sort of thing. Maybe him and some other supers playing volleyball suggestively or something.

Cheesecake is about as far as I go with that kind of thing - just so you know.

(Okay, all kidding aside...)
Still working on it - but probably gonna have to set it aside until next week... the lawn demands my attentions, and will not be denied.

It's looking really good so

It's looking really good so far now. I really need to start being more clear though D: I kinda meant the red that was around the lower part of the subligar was what would be blackened, not the sub itself T~T sorry if I confused you.

The sides of the helmet (meaning the area below the crown but above the cape) are a bit too protruding.. if you could trim it down by about 10 pixels on both sides, it'd be pretty much perfect. I also like the energy you've added, but the highlight it puts on the visor is a little excessive IMO.

I used GIMP to try and give a light touch up and to visually represent what I mean save for the armored subligar and the red below it (I don't even want to TRY to touch that.. probably take hours with my shaky hands). Not even close to the well refined piece you'll blow my mind with, but it's a nice example tool. :)

Amazingly enough, I use the same exact drawing program. I doubt I'm half as good as you since my art doesn't extend beyond stained glass-style cellshading... At any rate, I must agree- the helmet is a little too fat for a lean and mean overlord. ;)

Oh trust me, I suck at art

Oh trust me, I suck at art when it comes to actually putting paint to canvas. Used to be good until I had to get surgery on my hands following an idiotic mistake in my youth, which is why I've stuck to just the actual design element for everything.. >_> I'm a super critic. The touching up took all of an hour and if you look at the two, only a few small areas were even affected. Mainly just used the blur and burn tools to try and get rid of that flat red color and add in some lighting effects.. didn't work too well IMO on the left arm and the larger portion of the right bracer.

I'm really looking forward to mike's finished product.. hopefully he's taken the constructive criticism well :D

So, I request art for Sophia

O Great Artists, please accept my request for art of Sophia Dosidicus, chosen Emissary of the Cephalopod Council, Universal Genius, Heroic Trickster, Mistress of Illusion, et cetera.
She is a somewhat overweight woman seemingly in her thirties. She has short brown hair and a rather impish face virtually always grinning like a Cheshire Cat. She has a rather large aquiline nose. She wears a domino mask designed to make her look even more mischievious.
She is always seen wearing her great chameleonic mantle. When not camouflaged, it usually assumes a pattern strongly reminiscent of Sepia officinalis (the Common Cuttlefish). She usually wears a wine-red, indigo or blue waistcoat (actually a modern jack-of-plates designed for comfort) with a tiny octopus emblem (on the spot where
CoH put "Over" emblems on Jackets). Otherwise, no specific clothes. Would never wear high-heels.

Hmmm, now that the Nightmare is immortalized in art, it is time for his ally in the darkness to be given the recognition she so richly deserves. :)

It is time for Contessa Nocturne, in ink.

First, her face claim would be Odette Annabelle, save for the Contessa having black hair, actually.:
http://i500.listal.com/image/3896479/500full.jpg

She is 309 years old, but appears to be physically 26. She is Caucasian, and her complexion is slightly but not unusually pale, and unmarred. She has a lithe and toned figure, not overtly muscled but clearly having strength behind her bones.

Her weight, usually classified, is 140 pounds, and her height is 5'11.

In terms of attire, she wears a what I would like to call a armored dress. It consists of a pair of silver shoulder pads, connecting to a all black slightly see through lace and buckled top that shows a fair bit of cleavage, it's top half branching into a lower armored kilt. Buckled securely at the waste, the belt always displays a pair of wickedly curved arcane daggers, that have three sickly glowing purple runes ecthed into their blades. Below that, the dress branches into a short sort of 'cape' that covers her backside and legs. Her legs themselves are clad within a pair of tight black leather pants, accompanied with a pair of black thigh high boots, with steel buckles fashioned to them, and metallic heels.

Her arms would be fully covered to the wrists in a same see through lacelike-leather material, with a pair of steel bracers sown into the material as are her shoulder pads, with her hands fully uncovered. To round out the image in for details sack, her hands would glow not unlike Lord Nightmare's with a sickly purple energy like the energy from her daggers, and the same for her eyes.

Lastly, her stance would be subtly powerful, simply standing prone, looking forward with a menacing smile, and her hands curling at her sides. :)

I appreciate you guys reading this post and attempting this, and if not, that's fine too! You guys are awesome!! :)

Just an F.Y.I. you can't be "standing prone" as standing and prone are mutually exclusive.
The secondary (& relevant here) meaning of prone is to lay flat so if you were to trip &
fall flat on your face then it could be said that you are prone... but no longer standing.

I've been on a rough schedule. Mostly 14 hour days for about a month straight and more than likely probably get on another set of longer days coming up here.

Played with AAlbus a bit more - mostly fixed his ear and changed the background.

It's a really nice touch-up! I'm glad to see you found the time, but I'm really sorry to hear about you pulling 14-hour workdays. It must be rough. ;_;

I try never not complain about being able to work. :D. (Which since I'm at work now... Works well.)

All kidding aside, long hours are a part of the gig, and they are trying to hook me up with remote access. But jobs a bit of a nail biter involving several time zone so. .. Sleep is kinda optional. Has made me break my promise about doing a sketch a day but once we sort it out should get more of a real life again. :D

Okay, I'll play stupid. ;). What is an alternative body type? You mean where the ear is on their knee? I'm a simple man... Spell it out. :D.

Bwaahhahahah, poor mike.. thanks for the heads up though, cuz I would try and google it myself if you hadn't warn me

Funny, to realise what is considered "standard", but it's not less true.
Personally I haven't had the pleasure yet for project like that. I would if I'd get one though.
However... are Minotaurs considered alternative body types? Cuz then I did have the pleasure .

Well I didn't mean to be rude

Well I didn't mean to be rude, or snarky. That was not my intent. I could see it if it was a larger proportion or -- what would be a realistic body type, which is a very wide range but the intent is a character which is more in keeping with what a real person might look like (Alex Ross for example - although those are still maybe a bit too fit - most of us do not look like we could lift a man with one hand).

Those are a ton of fun to do because people seldom ever ask to make someone look realistic - they get asked to make their breasts bigger or butt smaller or muscles ripped more, but you seldom hear a critique say, "Can you drop a bit of a paunch on that one? Give him a couple donuts under the chin.", which is a shame because -- that's how most artists start. Is using actual people as reference and that's the goal - is to make their drawings look like real people.

It's a great challenge and very rewarding.

But when they tossed in 'body type muscles' I was like... alternative muscles?

By nature I'm a fairly literal person, so it's easier if you just come out and say what your thinking in very blunt literal definitions was all I meant. "Humans are horribly inefficient in our speech - we will do almost anything rather than just say what it is that we're thinking out of fear of imposing or out of desire to impress"... and I'm butchering Oscar Wilde, but that's my general thought on communication with people.

I don't think there was anything snarky or rude . I tend to take things literal too, which is why I prefer some kind of reference as the picture in my head is not always what someone else had in mind.

Hmmm...this might be hard to

Hmmm...this might be hard to explain as I lost all of my screenshots of my Necromancer character from City of Villians back in the day and even then City of Villians/Heroes was never able to give us robes due to limitations and nice long hair (past shoulder length) for guys wasn't possible then either.

If I were to re-design I would have him look like http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/126/4/9/49a5c22cd94665385e2e9f908a9d6053.jpg this clothing wise (I would also keep the skin color and ice blue eyes) but I would remove the hood of the robe and give him long straight jet black hair with dark blue to ice blue streaks (kind of like this http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2013/150/e/0/dark_ritual_by_elephantwendigo-d5xdh3x.jpg but of course with no skull cap and the hair would have streaks....I do like the feathers though...)

I hope that would be okay, the last time I requested a artist to make a character was....3 years ago and he/she never got back to me. Hope this would suffice and if it does not I will try to pull more pictures and go into greater detail.

So... now that I've seen

So... now that I've seen Demrius there - I am assuming you're referring to the body type in the avatar for Demrius or that you're looking for something like Demrius?

It took me a while to figure that out (told you I was a literal kinda guy)... I'm playing with something kinda .... maybe as was suggested a bit of Juggernaut / Bit of Fred Dukes there.... here's a rough body shape.

Keep in mind this is basically a stick figure. Demirus by rjakobson, on Flickr

I'm just trying to see if I've got the right body type in mind for what you're describing. And when we're discussing this - are we talking more muscled, abs - no abs, hulkish (muscles all over) that sort of thing. We looking at something more akin to the Kingdom Come versions (which are realistic versions of muscled people - not body builders but actual people with body mass)...

Also a better picture would be helpful of Demrius - if that's who you have in mind. I'm looking to see a bit more of what his face is like in your mind. Is he a gruff person - light hearted - little face / big face... that kind of thing. The more information people have in the forums to work from the easer it is to work.

[ I am semi-rising back from double shift work for several months... gonna try to get a few things out as I can. For those wondering where I've been...]

Still playing with this... slowly. Been kind of busy with RL stuff, but haven't forgotten. Colors are - obviously off - but I'm lacking a lot of info to go from. Still working off the concept of them being a nonstandard body type a bit. Not really good at that style but working on it... working on it... lol.

Yeah, I saw the similarities

Yeah, I saw the similarities to Puck right off - so will need to provide some scale. I'm not the level of artist which is particularly good at that. For me this is a great challenge because when he said alternate body types it gives me an opportunity to play.

I went through several attempts to provide a slightly more portly heroic body - not going fully on a Fred Dukes as someone suggested and then carved forward. Ironically this made him less portly and more buff as I went. The face I tried more normal - then more cartoonish - then finally started looking at how Sal and John Buscema did their larger body types. So went with a more Buscema-ish style over all because it made it easier.

Problem is when I got done without something to judge scale I wound up with a very squat body type. I think I can fix with some scale objects. He's supposed to be much larger than he appears. I'll work on it more.

Yeah, it's the compressed

Yeah, it's the compressed waist... lol... I totally see that. Which is bizarre since I was working off a sketch of Juggernaut for the posing. Was going for this huge man mountain that's not your Superman type kinda frame.

If you look at the progression - he had a bit of a beer belly at first and that kind of evolved a bit - and then I threw the mandarin jacket on and ... that got lost. I need more time to work out that shape and clothing on a more realistic waistline for someone that size.

Actual scale on this guy is around 6'8" is the intent - which due to the posing - makes him look like puck. I'll give another shot from a different perspective but wanted to get closer to finishing this.

And yeah, definitely am very much influenced by Buscema and Byrnes works lately. More Sal Buscema than Byrne - but Byrnes always been a favorite of mine.

I don't normally request

I don't normally request artwork, but this thread is here and it seems there are a few bored artists looking for something to do. I've always wanted a picture of my Robotics/Traps Mastermind repairing one of her robots or building some kind of elaborate SciFi device of unrecognized use.

Dusty Enalios
Mastermind, Robotic/Traps

From the time she was a small child Dusty Enalios had a penchant for two things: thievery and assembling working robots from whatever materials fell to hand. When other girls were playing with stuffed animals and nursing baby dolls, Dusty was assembling robots from blocks of wood scavenged at local construction sites held together by glue, kite strings, and cabinet hinges. She powered these wooden robots with electric motors swiped from RC toys owned by boys in the neighborhood. In elementary school teachers learned to keep a close eye on her because if they didn't, they would find her in a closet somewhere building robots from cleaning supplies.

A few days after her sixteenth birthday Dusty Enalios was arrested breaking into a local shop that specialized in items used by heroes who depended on Science and Technology to perform their good works. She shut down the alarm system, disarmed all of the stores electronic locks, and probably would have gotten away clean if a claws wielding hero hadn't stopped to check why the store's lights were on at four in the morning. The encounter left her blind in one eye with three scars across the left side of her face and carrying a deep seated hatred for all thing heroic. She was dropped into the deepest warrens of Ziggursky Penitentiary where she probably would have lived out the remainder of her days if it weren't for Arachnos.

Dusty Enalios was one of the thousands of superpowered prisoners freed during one of Arachnos early raids on the Zig. They very quickly learned to regret freeing her as she torn through the Rogue Isles building up a powerful robot army, defeating countless elite Arachnos troops, taking out half a dozen Arbiters, and eventually defeating every member of Lord Recluse's inner circle. It is rumored but cannot be proven that Dusty and Lord Recluse met on the burning shell of an alternate reality in an epic duel that left no doubt Lord Recluse had very real limits to his near omnipotence. Although she never joined the ranks of the Incarnate, there are stories told in whispered voices of gods that crossed her path and barely survived.

Dusty Enalios has not been heard from for a few years now. It is said she retired in a quite corner of Croatoa where Red Caps serve her meals, Fir Bolg guard her gates, and Witches keep her appraised of world events.

It is not certain when, but somewhere along the line she had the damage to her face replaced along with her left eye. Her right eye is her natural blue, but her left eye is a brilliant emerald green.

Unlike most of the people

Unlike most of the people here, I'm not an artist. I'm reasonably efficient in my sketching and a fair mechanical sketcher - but I will see bits and pieces of something - not the over all appearance until it's nearly done. I don't visualize an entirety of something very well.

So I'll get to an arm or a hand and in my head I'm seeing one thing and I try to copy that - pull back out to see it's freakin HUGE on one side and not on the other. Looked great in my head as I moved the pen nib... not so much on the canvas. Even with the underlying sketch - I didn't see it until I had my lines in because in my head there was all this perspective and texture... and so on...

An artist, has a hand tied to their imagination - not their memory. I had a art history professor that used to tell me that in college, always loved that line and it's very true.

In the case of the guantlets they became big when I did this flowing arm off the cloak... because hey, they have to fit over it right?? :) Logic... the bitter enemy of imagination. I'll fix that and her out of sync hips tonight. The hips actually drive me more nuts than the hands. LOL

I knew I wanted to have her standing with a very Captain Harlock kind of pose (in fact I'm looking to put a Harlock sword gun in place of the sword) and a Harlock sort of raygun pistol in both hands and bots in the background backing her up.

The Cape just didn't in my head fit with the character - so figured I could take a liberty there. But needs to be a cloak/dress coat - you know the kind that doesn't actually exist but flows even when there's no wind.. kinda like Batman's Cape .. 40 feet long and self supporting in a vacuum - lol.

I had a Mastermind with bots for a while - but didn't use it much so I've had to go look up them from different screen shots and add them in and tried to get them as accurate as I could (good luck with that!).

So there's a lot of stuff to be added yet - and I will probably need to rearrange and stuff. I like the concept but this is a tricky one for someone like me. I do very rough prototypes and hand them over to artists generally - stuff to give someone a general idea. For me, this is really therapy when I have time between RL projects, so it's greatly appreciated to just do stuff. :)

See that's what I needed to know. :) Big difference - was totally going for something along the lines of Zagreb the Wrestler or something. lol the Avatar is so small could not get much idea on race other than darker skin. Yeah let me see where we can go with that... this'll be fun.

Very nice!

If you need a few more references, I do have a few screenshots over at Atlas Park Revival

I also recently wrote a blog post lamenting the callousness of NC Soft executives which also features some screenshots

There we go..

There we go... A picture for reference! did my best in the HM3..some things are still off. Oh and in case you all were wondering why Demrius has to have some fat on him, its because he is gluttony personified, and felt that would really bring the character home, He has a brother too, he is a villain though, 20 points to who ever can figure out what sin he is the embodiment of..

Note: Jorortis is still a character of mine and is still going to be in the super group, not Demirus, at least not yet...

Very nice. yeah that makes

Very nice. And having an image of any kind - yeah that makes all the difference. And by giving a bit of backstory it really allows to get a visual lock on an idea. You tell me gluttony personified - and that gives all kinds of reference points for ideas and directions and narrows down a few as well.

See, when you first said Alternative Muscles - I seriously didn't know what you meant. There are so many styles of how people are muscled. Take Alex Ross' work - love the guy - but look at his batman. It's ultra-realistic - and the muscles and build are different than probably what anyone else in comics does.

But it's very realistic. Batman is fit - but has what most people today would call a bit of a paunch there. Got a double chin thing going... looks more like your Uncle Lou than Bruce Wayne - certainly not like Christian Bale or Robert Downey Jr. Right? This could be anyone - someone you know - dressed up like that.

Kinda creepy in an 'uncanny valley' sort of way. This is how a real person - a real person in a cape and suit would look and that's why it's so creepy. Because it looks just a bit ... too realistic. Visually it breaks the fantasy most people have when you say superhero. Which is weird because there was a time when that was - believe it or not almost all comic characters looked.

In the 60's we started to change how people looked - we went from

To in the 1970s

The reference picture you see

The reference picture you see there is Demrius in his normal uniform, and his default powers, you know Super strength, rhino like durability, and surprising speed, but my favorite thing about Demrius is that at his peak, he becomes an animalistic carnivore that takes a more doomsday like appearance, his hands and forearms are encased in jagged bone and he gets massive teeth and an unhinged jaw.

Yeah, his version of Batman's always reminded me of my Crazy Uncle Phil in a cheap Halloween costume. The only thing he's ever going to inspire fear into is the Bakery aisle at the local Kroger's Foods. He doesn't have a Batmobile so much as he has a 1979 Econoline van with a spray painted bat on the side covering where it used to say "Gotham Plumbing & Heating".

Higher shoulders and a wider

Higher shoulders and a wider chest, as well as larger legs, in terms of width not length and that would be the perfect Demrius body right there!
