Any interest in a party?

I did this off and on in City of Heroes and it usually got a pretty good crowd. I’m going to try to get ahead of the game this time and gauge interest early on. I wouldn’t mind entertaining suggestions or feedback either, although the model’s worked pretty well for me.

Basically, they’re social gatherings set in some part of the outdoor city. (Although with a little clever use of team invites to get people onto the map where they could then quit the team allowing you to invite more people, we occasionally would do actual parties the bigger mission maps in City of Heroes. That was fun in the right spot! Invitational only zone the size of a small world map using a premade map rather than the more limited bases we could build.)

I’m thinking these would start a while after the game starts since people will of course have a whole new game to explore, full of stories, enemies and possibilities. This is for after people have been here long enough to sink their teeth into the game’s content.

My social gatherings (“parties”) followed a pretty simple scheme. Any feedback or thoughts? Any interest in this (once the game's been going a bit). I liked to think of it as a little downtime between missions, hunting and such. A little social semi in-character event. Half an hour minimum, two hours tops.

This is just a basic outline. I didn't try to hit every point every party. (I'd usually either have a contest or a game, for example.)

* Planning: I tried to run them on the same day either weekly or once every other week. Each one was themed and usually advertised on the boards and in-game.

* Theme could mean anything from a 1950’s retro style party, a celebration of a certain historical event [in-game or out], a holiday, costume themes or even just a ‘get-together’ or barbeque.

* Macros: I'd usually come up with a few sets of text and emote macros to fit the theme. If it's a hotdog themed celebration (why not?), I'd come up with emotes of my hero handing out hotdogs and such. (Plus of course greetings for when new people arrived.)

* Conversation and 'things to do.' Emote fishing.. talking.. discussing recent events. Planning in-game events for later. That kind of thing.

* Games! I ran.. different styles of games. The games and contests tended to be rather random and weird. Quirky is a good word.

My favorite used the in-game dice emote to determine how well you did over multiple turns. One favorite of mine was a 'cooking contest.' (Although rubber duck races worked well if you were near a body of water.) Two to four contestants work well here. The players take turns answering 'baking challenges' I'd issue. Whip up some chocolate chip cookies. Bake something using too many eggs. Then I'd tell you 'how it goes' based on the roll of the dice (or die). If you got a six, it might be something like "Suddenly, a celebrity chef walks in to help you whip out the greatest meal you've ever had!" or "You're doing so well, it's hard to focus over the cheering, catcalls and fans throwing shopping lists at you. (Hey, it's a tradition in Titan City!)" If you went bad, it'd probably be more along the lines of "You start to realize these eggs might be from the 70's.. but it's too late to get fresh ingredients." or "Right as you start, the oven explodes. But the show must go on!")

Results could be based on the total dice roll, performance or a combination of both.

I also had improv games that didn't involve the die. My favorite was we'd be watching television and I'd go around the group asking questions to determine what we're watching. To the first player, "Do we want to watch a sci fi show or reality tv?" (Let's say reality for this example.) To the second.. "I've never seen this show: What's the theme?" To the third, "Okay.. so what is the goal for the players? How do they win?" Then maybe.. “Isn’t that a former hero competing? (Tell us who it is and what they’re like.”)

Silly little improv games that were more of a distraction than anything and a fun little way to tell a strange story.

* Contests: With a small prize. 50K influence I think. (In the post inventions era.) Again, mostly for fun and to kill time, I'd do a combination "Costume/ talent contest." Since simple costume contests were overdone. During my parties in City of Heroes, I'd ask really strange questions off the top of my head. "You've been asked to come up with a cartoon based on the top hero in the game... but it can't be violent in anyway. How do you go about it?" "You're the last hero standing against the last sixty members of a Skulls invasion. All the other heroes are injured or ... er.. unconscious. After singlehandedly defeating the last Skulls, you need to explain to the press exactly why the invasions were so successful. Be realistic, but don't throw your fellow heroes under the bus! Try to make them look semi competent!"

Everyone got one. When I felt up to it, every player would get one, maybe two off-the-fly questions to answer. Winner was based partly on the outfit but more on how well they did (as judged by the panel of judges).

Thoughts? Feedback? Suggestions? Interest?

I personally love the idea,

I personally love the idea, it's a shame I didn't take part in any of these when CoX was live. It sounds quite fun.

I currently don't have any suggestions on the format of the party, but everything can always be improved, so if anything hits me I'll let you know. The improv sounds very cool.

I was quite fond of the improv style games. I felt I had a long way to go before I could say I was "good" at hosting them- but it was a nice way to avoid long periods of silence and have fun. I felt like when you're having a party in a virtual environment - since it isn't face to face so you can't rely on things like serving snacks or music, really - it helped to go that extra distance.

Plus if you think about it, roleplaying on an online game is a form of improv. You're reacting to other people as opposed to writing all of the roles yourself, in real time. I thought this played well into that.

Apologies if I failed to get the word out so you would hear about it in City of Heroes but I look forward to seeing you when I host parties (eventually) in Titan! *Grins*

I wasn't very social in CoH

I wasn't very social in CoH after my best friends stopped playing; mostly soloed and got a bit of a rep for usually turning down team requests. I later regretted that.

I think it's true that any social group needs a variety of things to do to really last and succeed. To do fun things in-game that aren't directly related to the game setting could really add something special. Count me in, when the Day arrives. Well, maybe a few weeks later... ;D.

You say nice things about me: I admire that in a person.

Excellent news. Yeah, the first week or two I want to dive into the game myself, learn the emote system and such.. and some of the game lore, past what we'll already know at that point. This'll just be a little something extra for us to do every so often, hopefully.. hehe

Day One I think would be

Day One I think would be organizing teams. Like many others said we be going hyper drive learning the new systems and getting our mains to top level. Top level being 30 at launch that wouldn't be long really. So a launch party would not be that empty. People finding friends, testing out the emotes, Setting up the chat systems, and showing off the new bases all can be done celebrating.

By my count there are about 4

By my count there are about 4,000 KS backers who have:

Quote:

Home Sweet Home - This includes a full copy of the game via digital download, a month of VIP subscription, and advanced account activation during the release weekend giving you a headstart on public play + All previous rewards.

or above. Not sure how many of those will actually take advantage of it (at least one, barring RL ^_^), but it should supply a fair number of people who've already done a bit of exploring/leveling and who would therefore be available on full public launch for partying/helping out the newer players/etc ^_^

That's true; I forgot about the headstart (which is weird since I got the reward just past it, Fly Free.) It might also be a good spot to give advice to the first day newbies.... from us grizzled, hardened three day vets. :D (Or however long headstart is.)

It might be a good way to get teams together past randomly finding people too.

I'm all about player-inspired

I'm all about player-inspired events. Every other week sounds good as even special things can become mundane if they happen too often. Theme the party and end with a themed CC for prizes. Themed games like 'design the best emote' and so forth.

I love this community

Yup, twice a month, once a month when there'd be less interest, like new content releases.

That's pretty much how I see it, with mostly in-world (in character) story themes. The 'design the best emote' is something I really should use, it'd fit in with the parties well, thank you!

Hey Ambi, interesting Ideas!

Hey Ambi, interesting Ideas! I'm always down for a party (having spent many a Naked Tuesday on the bridge behind city hall on Guardian)!

Your ideas are definitely much more involved than dancing and chatting, but it definitely sounds like fun. I'd offer the use of the Naughty Corner for your soirees if you're interested.

It's nice seeing interest. I'd love to hit both facilities as the event sometimes traveled around the city, so there's no reason we can't host different events at different places, right? Especially where they fit the theme.

I'd love to eventually hit both spots - and more.

I'm thinking we'll host the first parties in public, though. That'll give them a chance to be seen and let us be out 'in the open,' so players who aren't in the know might see what is going on.

Here's what I'm thinking for our launch day party.

Event: "Ye Old Inn and Tavern"
Location: The most suitable spot for the theme
Duration: Half an hour to an hour and a half (to be determined later)

Theme: There's an old story convention used to bring adventurers together for an adventure? This is basically themed on that. We can share our pre launch experiences with the new players and each other, show off our characters bios, and put together teams.. or relax between missions.

Suggested extras: "Who's that champion?" Each hero would bring a short 2-3 sentence writeup on their hero, but nothing that would immediately identify them. Then over the course of the party, we'll have players PM me it.. I'll say it in local and give players a few seconds to guess on who it might be before giving the correct answer.

"... speaks.." If you want to prepare some mission plans and / or tips on playing, roleplaying, getting around the city, ext, we could plan out times for different people to have the spotlight on them. Maybe answer questions or take additional suggestions after.

Macros and such: If I can figure out how to do them, I'll throw them in as sort of extra story flavor for the party. And of course, I can take suggestions for future parties here, since it'll be the first.

How's that sound for a rough layout?

J

It’s probably past due I

It’s probably past due I wrote up some additional party theme ideas to submit for public feedback and consideration.

For simplicity’s sake, we’ll start with the premise that all events use the following, unless suggested otherwise.

Location: The most suitable spot for the theme
Duration: Half an hour to an hour and a half (to be determined later)

It’s hard to plan a spot for the party without knowing more about the gameplay areas open to us. Events shouldn’t need to go an hour and a half early on and even that sounds long. But if they’re successful, maybe they could go on a little longer.

Since Location and Duration are covered above, each entry is just theme, extras and macro ideas. This is the small sampling I came up with although I’m sure we could come up with tons more if we want. Suggestions and feedback are both welcomed and encouraged. I’d also love to know which events people would enjoy the most and which ones don’t do much for you.

I’m sure I have a lot of themes I’m just forgetting, too.

This isn't even covering a host of themed ‘best’ events like best in casual, best furry or any number of other Second Life inspired events.

Events below, J.

Theme: Signature Hero Appreciation day. We’ll surely have signature heroes and personalities in the game; at least some should be worth celebrating. I could see the honor eventually extending to player created characters as well. (This could easily be a key non super as well!)

Suggested Extras: Tributes and ‘war stories’ about the star of the event. General party having and fun, otherwise. Maybe a speech by and/ on behalf of the star hero.

Macros and such: Speech, speech! Probably something in the theme of whomever the featured hero is. Probably not much in the way of ‘food and party favor’ macros.

Theme: Barbeque and Salads buffet

Suggested Extras: Games! Definitely this is a good spot for mini games.

Macros and such: Just the opposite of the first party; lots of macros of virtual ‘food’ to hand out. Probably lots of dancing too. And small conversation starters - the theme doesn’t really lend itself to specific topics.

Theme: Talk Like a Pirate Parrty! For Talk like a Pirate day or really, any day of the freakin’ year!

Suggested Extras: Pirate themed mini games! Pirate themed macro/ outfit contests!

Macros and such: Pirate themed macros! These ideas are so exciting that I’m using exclamation points!

Theme: Informal picnic

Suggested Extras: This is a good party theme for more relaxed, casual mini game type events. Maybe collaborative storytelling would work here.

Macros and such: Picnic macros. Lame jokes about ants and bears stealing your food. Picnic macros, obviously.

Theme: Game(s) day. Sporting events. Video game releases. Real, imagined or original concept, it doesn’t matter really.

Suggested Extras: This seems like the ideal spot to hand out small prizes. And of course, talk games and sports! Maybe sports and game themed mini games. Themed emote/ improve/ costume contests? Themed dice-determined contests too.

Macros and such: Lots. Whatever the topic is, I’m sure it’ll inspire plenty of fun macros, be it shooting a basketball or first person shooter homages.

Theme: Holiday parties. Of course, we can do some around the holidays. After, before or on the big day. For certain holidays we could even do multiple events in order to give a chance to attend to both people who don’t have many spare days off, and those who are busy on the holiday.

Suggested Extras: This would be a great chance to hand out ‘boosts’ or whatever our equivalent of inspirations are as ‘holiday cookies’ or whatever fits the theme. Definitely themed costume contests!

Macros and such: Holiday cookie themed macros, holiday greetings. Maybe warm, sweet past holiday stories would fit here.

In the interests of keeping

In the interests of keeping the momentum on my party going, I've drawn up three more potential party themes. I'd love to hear your ideas themes and who else, if anyone, is interested.

There's probably lots of other themes I'm forgetting too. I'll take it step by step, though. They're rather short and to the point. Suggestions, ideas and feedback (and interest in attending) is always welcome! I’m also doing this as a way to let people know I’m still planning to do these things when the game eventually goes live.

Here's the three for the post!

1. Fishing by the lake
2. Gathered around a small tv set (television marathon)
3. Firepit

Also. . .

Location: The most suitable spot for the theme
Duration: Half an hour to an hour and a half (to be determined later)

Just consider those two to apply to the below events, very tentatively of course.

Theme: Fishing by the lake

Overview: Sometimes a simple concept works better than something more elaborate. This would be one that's easy to throw together, a little downtime later on between missions and forming teams.

Suggested Extras: Fishing macros. I'm pretty sure we could come up with a few simple fishing themed 'game' ideas. Maybe a 'fishing outfit' contest?

Macros and such: I'm sure I could have a field day with the concept. Or a fishing day with it. Macros for things like fishing, encouraging fishing, handing out bait and complaining that “fishing is boring.” *wide grin*

Theme: Gathered around a small tv set (television marathon)

Overview: This is a smaller, less ambitious event suitable for probably any base equipped with something resembling a tv. I am hoping there are in-game areas which would work here as well.

Suggested Extras: My 'watching tv together' improv game, which I outlined earlier. Possibly other similar games as well.

Macros and such: TV dinner macros for everyone (hopefully)!

Theme: Firepit

Overview: This is rather similar to the barbeque event, just a little different concept.

Suggested Extras: Anything like the barbeque event, but well.. hopefully new and different. Light fluffy conversation and character defining conversations/ stories would be appropriate here.

Macros and such: Same as extras.
