Anthem: A Community Survey

In the various discussions about the game art and the concept of a “Flagship” character for City of Titans, I’ve noticed many community members have particular opinions about the (seeming) Flagship for this project: Anthem.

To that end, I wanted to create a small questionnaire and poll the community to see where we all stand on this character. Now I know that, although it began as such, Titans is not likely to remain a community designed project for very long and I know, also, that the Development team likely has their own views and ideas about this character (for all we know, she’ll never actually exist in the game, as we've assumed she will…)

But knowing what we know currently, I wanted to get a feel for what the community felt about what we know.

(X) Yes (but, full disclosure, i'm still not a huge fan of her power suite)

Question 4, a:
Briefly, what is your opinion of Flagship characters in MMOs (their purpose/value)

They are the Public face of the game, and act as the driving mechanism for events in the world (the King that invades a neighbor to cause conflict, or the hero that rises to stop that conflict)

Question 4, b:
Is your opinion different for Comic Book Universes?

Quote:

(If Yes, briefly explain.)

To me, the Flagship characters in comic book worlds act as the focal point of ideology of the setting. I.e. they are the moral/ideological compass that everything else adheres to or defies. Further they function as an ultimate protagonist (or antagonist, in the case of villains) in their setting. Because they act as this ideological compass, their journey is the journey of the world.

Question 2, a:

Her Hero 1/ Ms. Liberty and Peter Parker/ Miles Morales blended backstory. If she is an icon, she deserves to have powers all her own, she doesn't need to be American Star II.

Question 3, a:

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh, seriously? Only one? If I had to choose anything I would say make her American Star's sidekick, and not his protege (thank you, Ghosthack), with a host of powers that in no way reflect American Star. That would have the greatest effect on her costume, powers, and hopefully her persona.

Question 4, a:
Briefly, what is your opinion of Flagship characters in MMOs (their purpose/value)
For an MMO they would be vehicles, the very first taste of the game used to draw you in. A way to say: "This could be you!" or "You could fight alongside this amazing character!" Therefore, the Flagship is very important.

Question 4, b:
Is your opinion different for Comic Book Universes?

Quote:
(If Yes, briefly explain.)

A Flagship character in comics performs a similar function to those in MMOs, the difference being is that you cannot interact with the characters in a comic. Ergo, the Flagship must strike a cord with you in order to live vicariously through him/her. They must have both strict moral standards and fairly simple (not stupid) lines of thought. Everyone must be in a position to see this character as the epitome of moral ideals and must be capable of embodying the human spirit.

I don't get mad, I restructure the laws of quantum physics and resolve the situation with temporal engineering.

Question 1, a:
What is your favorite aspect of the Anthem character?

I hate being PC, so let's not take it as being PC, but I like that what currently seems to be the poster child for CoT is a black female. People keep talking about putting more diversity into superheroes, but they go about it the wrong way. The best way, new characters and put them out there!

This being an MMO and not a comic book publisher worrying about sales, might make that easier!

I also love that she has a patriot theme. While I consider her outfit terrible, I find it better than Statesman's mask!

Question 1, b:
Is your favorite aspect “enough” (for you), to consider Anthem a viable Flagship character in City of Titans?
(_) Yes
(X) No

Question 2, a:
What is your least favorite aspect of the Anthem character?

I can't say I have her complete history memorized, but what little I know of her, she just seems bland (when I say this, it doesn't mean any of my characters are better). She seems boring and pedestrian. I'm not saying she needs to be Superman level toughness either. She just...from what I've seen...I wouldn't pick up her comic.

Question 2, b:
Is that aspect enough (for you) to reject Anthem as a viable Flagship?
(X) Yes
(_) No

Question 3, a:
If you could change one (and only one) aspect of the Anthem character, what would it be?

I'm going to say background as that I think would include multiple things about her, from powers to personality and maybe even outfit.

Question 3, b:
Would this change be enough to improve your perception of Anthem as a whole?
(X) Yes
(_) No

Question 4, a:
Briefly, what is your opinion of Flagship characters in MMOs (their purpose/value)

Under used! I love running missions with and against such characters! I love that I can have characters that either support or hate such characters! They're just an important part of the experience imo.

Question 4, b:
Is your opinion different for Comic Book Universes?
(X) Yes
(_) No
(If Yes, briefly explain.)

I don't get to play with them! Well, maybe DCUO, but let's be honest, that game is to terrible to count :p

The costume. It's too complicated. IMO, a flagship character's costume should be easy to describe.

Flagship characters in CBUs make you want to read about them, or watch them, or maybe be them. But for the MMO the players will be making their own heroes/villains, perhaps to fight alongside/against the flagship character on occasion, but more often separately or with other players.

Question 1, a:
What is your favorite aspect of the Anthem character?
Honestly, I'm liking that for once, the main hero of a universe is a female. She has all the looks of being supposed to be a Ms. Liberty style character, except she's the Big Good instead.

Question 1, b:
Is your favorite aspect “enough” (for you), to consider Anthem a viable Flagship character in City of Titans?
(_) Yes
(X) No

Question 2, a:
What is your least favorite aspect of the Anthem character?
Ironically, the same as my most favorite one. She seems more like a "sidekick to the Big Good" style character than the Big Good herself. I haven't seen anything that really sells her as the leader yet. Even if she actually is the leader.

Question 2, b:
Is that aspect enough (for you) to reject Anthem as a viable Flagship?
(_) Yes
(X) No

Question 3, a:
If you could change one (and only one) aspect of the Anthem character, what would it be?
The mask looks.. off. Not sure if it works for her to have a metal mask like that. Can't say much about how she acts yet.

Question 3, b:
Would this change be enough to improve your perception of Anthem as a whole?
(X) Yes
(_) No

Question 4, a:
Briefly, what is your opinion of Flagship characters in MMOs (their purpose/value)
A flagship character in an MMO is supposed to be the idealized version of what you, as a player, could become and eventually surpass. Statesman was a grand hero, promising that you, too, could be one. Recluse was a supervillain, promising that now you could be one of those.

An MMO flagship character should be an inspiration in the low levels and an equal at high levels.

Question 4, b:
Is your opinion different for Comic Book Universes?
(X) Yes
(_) No
(If Yes, briefly explain.)
A flagship for a comic book universe does not have to be someone you'd want to be. I mean, Wolverine is a jerk. But he's also everywhere. Superman is a boyscout, and an impossible ideal. Captain America is also an idealist, but not really the guy you want to be. Spider-Man, though, used to be the guy you want to be. But he was never the Big Good in the Marvel universe.

Reactions and Response (brief comment)

Question 1, a:
What is your favorite aspect of the Anthem character?
The fact that you're shooting for a female minority as the iconic character. This makes it distinctive from anything else with in the super hero genre, from comic books to movies, there are very few female characters that I could see as flagship material (Wonder Woman is the only one that comes to mind.) The aim is admirable.

Question 1, b:
Is your favorite aspect “enough” (for you), to consider Anthem a viable Flagship character in City of Titans?
(_) Yes
(x) No

Question 2, a:
What is your least favorite aspect of the Anthem character?

Generally, her concept origin and costuming are just a bit too much like Ms. Liberty.

Question 2, b:
Is that aspect enough (for you) to reject Anthem as a viable Flagship?
(_) Yes
(x) No

Question 3, a:
If you could change one (and only one) aspect of the Anthem character, what would it be?
Not so much a change and an addition. She has as a foundation what appears to be inspiration derived from Ms. Liberty. Add to that. Think of another super hero and combine the aspects of those two concepts/powers to create something new and unique. Doesn't even need to be female. Captain America had his super serum, Wonder Woman is an Amazon, Batman spent years training in various forms of unarmed combat, Statesman was granted the powers of Zues. This sort of thing can add some much needed depth to the character which seems to be lacking.

Question 3, b:
Would this change be enough to improve your perception of Anthem as a whole?
(x) Yes
(_) No

Question 4, a:
Briefly, what is your opinion of Flagship characters in MMOs (their purpose/value)

I've only ever really played COH. Why does this need to be limited to MMOs? Better to look at the superhero genre than a bunch of fantasy games, and a half hand full of super hero games.

Statesman - a good if not perfect flagship character. He is really a combination, in my opinion, of 3 characters from comic books: Captain America, Superman, and a touch of Captain Marvel.

So... moving right along

Superman - he IS the flagship superhero. I personally am not a big fan of the character over all, but have to acknowledge that fact. He's been ingrained into our society's consciousness for 80 years.

Captain America - Again, not a huge fan, but there is no doubting his status as the flagship character of Marvel.

Popularity does not make one a flagship, sorry Wolverine. What makes these two flagship characters is how they are seen by their peers, and how they have been handled by the writers of their respective books over the years.

Question 4, b:
Is your opinion different for Comic Book Universes?
(_) Yes
(x) No
(If Yes, briefly explain.)

In closing, I am certainly hoping we end up with some videos of Anthem and her team in action before the game is released. Just saying she's the leader is all well and good. Showing her in action, and taking charge of her team will go a long way to actually establish this as fact.

Reactions and Response (brief comment)

Question 1, a:
What is your favorite aspect of the Anthem character?

I love the simple fact of having a female flagship character for a superhero universe, it's something that's all too rare. Plus I like her origin, it gives a good amount of room for actual character development

Question 1, b:
Is your favorite aspect “enough” (for you), to consider Anthem a viable Flagship character in City of Titans?
(x) Yes
(_) No

Question 2, a:
What is your least favorite aspect of the Anthem character?

Her costume could use some fine tuning, plus i'm not sure how i feel about a sword wielding flagship. On one hand it makes her feel like a gladiator, calling back to a time of greek myths and legends which many people say superheroes are the modern day for off. On the other hand there aren't many ways to use a sword non-lethally (perhaps she only uses it out when need to or fighting some big monster?) and well Flagship heroes in general should be pretty apposed to general killing.

Question 2, b:
Is that aspect enough (for you) to reject Anthem as a viable Flagship?
(_) Yes
(x) No

Question 3, a:
If you could change one (and only one) aspect of the Anthem character, what would it be?

Very little, but maybe her armory. I'm still on the fence about the sword so maybe a more non-lethal weapon like a whip or net (but that may be too wonder woman)?

Question 3, b:
Would this change be enough to improve your perception of Anthem as a whole?
(x) Yes
(_) No

Question 4, a:
Briefly, what is your opinion of Flagship characters in MMOs (their purpose/value)

It can vary depending on what type of MMO it is, but usually a flagship should be someone you can stick on the box art/website to look awesome so as to entice people to buy, while still conveying the overall theme of the world. For this Anthem works great and can also just serve as a cool character the players and com unity would want to know more about and live up to.

Question 4, b:
Is your opinion different for Comic Book Universes?
(_) Yes
(x) No

1) Very Iconic
2) Neutral
3) Somewhat Iconic
4) Not Very Iconic
5) Not very Iconic
6) Not Very Iconic

1a) The name
1b) No

2a) Her costume, particularly the sword
2b) Yes, I would reject her as a flagship for that alone

3a) Her costume. As discussed, replace her sword with a piece of flag as a shoulder cape. Possible other small tweaks as well.
3b) I think she'd be great with some small reworking.

4a) For MMOs flagship characters act as a focal point for advertising and plot threads. The flagship characters should also be seen doing something but they need not overshadow the PCs.
4b) A flagship character for a comic is a completely different animal. The flagship character IS the story in a comic book. But the struggles and challenges are resolved through writing, not PC vs NPC combat.

Q1. How Iconic is the name,

Q1. How Iconic is the name, “Anthem”? Very Iconic. It reads a little lispy, but it is highly original and speaks volumes!
Q2. Does her Origin (as presented in the KS information) strike you as…? From memory I think it works. I couldn't find it again.
Q3. Is her Personality (as presented in the KS information) …? Can't remember.

Q2, a: What is your least favorite aspect of the Anthem character? The possibility she slices people with the sword. Although that hasn't been shown.
Q2, b: Is that aspect enough (for you) to reject Anthem as a viable Flagship? No. But I'd like others too, less violent.
Q3, a: If you could change one (and only one) aspect of the Anthem character, what would it be? Switch the sword for a bugle-tonfa. It will probably take some amazing design work to get it right.
Q3, b: Would this change be enough to improve your perception of Anthem as a whole? So, would the change I'd like make me like it more? I won't say no.
Q4, a: Briefly, what is your opinion of Flagship characters in MMOs (their purpose/value)? GoldPeter (above) said it really well. Also, in-game, her impact will depend on how the devs position the players, who come first.
Question 4, b: Is your opinion different for Comic Book Universes? Yes. Player is not the focus in a comic.
