Another original superhero universe...

After reading the Hybrid’s post about their own original superhero universe, I was inspired to lay out some of the basics of my own.

My universe is a typical kitchen sink superhero continuity: a mix of fantasy, science fiction, and crimefighters all in a superhero multiverse. I’m intentionally creating characters and stories that celebrate and exemplify the purity and idealism of heroes as shown in the Golden Age of comics (without the racism and sexism of course). So I’m avoiding gritty, dark characters and anti-heroes altogether. Other writers have that covered well enough.

Here’s the list of potential stories and series that I plan to write. It would be really cool to find other writers who could take some of these stories, but until I find a team I’m tackling it on my own.

–––––––––

The Challengers

The Challengers are analogous to the Justice League and Avengers. They are a team of heroes dating from the 40’s whose simple mission it is to protect the world from super powered villains. They are an American based team, but cooperate with teams from around the world. The modern day team members are the powerful Watchman, the genius Doctor Lightning, the synthetic Soldier, the crimefighting Scarlet Angel, the shapeshifting Mutant, and the cyborg Endgame.

Alpha Patrol

Basically the Challengers in training. This is a group of young metahumans who operate under the watch of the Challengers. They are led by the son of Watchman and Doctor Lightning, Stormhawk. The other members include Liberty, Avian, Ghost, and Battalion.

The Mystic Society

The Mystic Society is a loosely knit group of magically endowed superheroes who protect Earth from magical threats. The team members include:

Geomancer (John Mwangi II) - Has the ability to control earth and fire.

Miss Tempest (Zahra Mwangi) - Has the ability to control air and water.

Masked Mystery (Madeline Beaumont) - A mysterious woman of unknown origin, Madeline seems to be very old despite looking young. She is a telepath, mind-reader, and illusionist.

Red Bolt (Dr. Jack Martin) - Dr. Martin is an archaeologist who found the tomb of Merlin as well as Merlin’s Dragon Ring. Transported to the Mountains of Fire, Zurth chose him to be his new avatar. Wielding the ring against magical threats to the mortal world, he became the Red Bolt. He met Mystery on his adventures and together they formed the Mystic Society.

Pendragon (King Arthur Pendragon) - The legendary king of ancient England now awoken from his long slumber, Arthur struggles to adjust to his new life in the “modern” world as a superhero.

Black Blade (Jonathan Clayton) - Blade is a pirate from the 1700s who shipwrecked on Dread Island and drank from the Fountain of Youth, gaining immortality, strength, and power over animals. He rules Dread Island as king and reluctantly aids the Society in their war against magical evil. He and Arthur do not get along well.

Sirena - Wife of Black Blade. Sirena is the queen of the merpeople who live in the sea surrounding Dread Island. She is amphibious, immortal, and very strong. She can scream at hypersonic levels, destroying most anything in her path. She wields a magic spear that returns to her hand when she throws it.

Miracle (Keira Silverleaf) - Keira is an elvish huntress from the Enchanted Forest, a pocket realm found in Europe. She is the last pure-blood elf, and protector of her realm. She is very strong and fast, and is the most capable hand-to-hand fighter in the Society. She uses an enchanted bow and carries two long daggers made of elvish silver, sharp enough to cut through soul as well as body. She also has heightened senses and can heal very quickly. She is immortal.

Ungods

The Ungods come from a part of the multiverse called the Betaverse.

Ungods date back to ancient times. Ancient alien beings called Titans ruled earth as gods for millennia until mankind decided to rebel. Then first Ungod, Korax the Mighty, led the mortals into battle and defeated the Titans. They studied the source of the Titans power and gave it to the people of Earth. They became known as the Ungods. When the Betaverse was destroyed, the Ungods were nearly wiped out. Those who remained migrated to the Alphaverse.

On the new Earth, they were encountered with suspicion. Many thought of them as invaders and treated them with hatred. For everyone’s safety, the leaders of the world gave a part of Antarctica to the Ungods to serve as a home. The Ungods accepted this and built a great domed city called Nova. A faction of Ungods who thought they were being treated unfairly broke off from the main group and began to attack the rest of the Earth. These were called the Exiles, and they took up residence in a secret location.

The total population of Ungods is 3,645. Most of these live in Nova, but a fraction followed the Exiles. Earth Beta was more advanced than Earth Alpha, so the Ungods have more scientific knowledge and possess higher forms of technology that set them apart. Ungods can be detected by their fingerprints, which are angular rather than curved in design. The heart of an Ungod glows bright, causing their chests to glow from the inside. All Ungods are stronger, faster, and more durable than normal humans. All Ungods have powers of some kind, and certain bloodlines have greater powers than others. Powers can be transferred by heart transplants. The lordly and royal bloodlines intentionally bred themselves to foster great powers, although non-royal families can randomly produce a very powerful offspring.

The royal circle of the current Ungods are:
King Gale (Galeforce): can manipulate environments; can summon magical construct wings
Queen Astra: powerful hypnotist; expert hand to hand combatant with enhanced strength
Lazarus: can manipulate biological systems; best friend and advisor to the king and queen
Korax the Mighty: limitless strength and healing factor; captain of the royal guard
Basta (Lioness): feline physicality; superhuman mental processing including perfect memory and data analysis; royal emissary to the world

Heralds of Earth

This team’s mission is to explore the universe and act as ambassadors for Earth, stopping alien threats before they get too close. They use Arcstar’s ship, the Siren, to travel through space.

Paragon (Magnus Jones)
The most powerful meta human on Earth, Paragon possesses the powers of telepathy and telekinesis, capable of manipulating molecules and energy with his mind. However, massive feats of power leave him exhausted. He is peaceful and kind, but will do anything to defend the weak and helpless.

Chemical (Jonas Shepherd)
Former leader of the Challengers, Chemical is on a personal quest to discover the secret of the green chemical that keeps him alive. He is super-intelligent and an incredibly skilled fighter. His weapon of choice is a sword.

Comet (Calvin Davis)
Adopted son of Watchman. He is searching for his place in the universe. He controls movement and velocity, and is the fastest human in the universe.

Arcstar (Kel Ondar)
A former alien bounty hunter, Arcstar’s life was saved by Paragon (whom she was trying to collect a bounty on), and she turned to the straight and narrow. She is tough and fearless, and uses an energy whip in battle.

Maverick (Valerie Dale)
Formerly known as the All-American Girl, Maverick is a weapons expert who heals instantly from any injury and never seems to age. She is the voice of reason and wisdom, and keeps the team glued together. She joined the team out of love for Comet.

Vornak

In the days of the Kore Empire's rule over Earth, there was a planet wide police force called the White Sentinels. These police were tasked with keeping the peace among Earth's population and derived their power from the Eye of Vornak. The Eye was a supercomputer that interfaced with the Sentinels, granting them incredible reflexes and a low level of telepathy that enabled them to sense when someone was breaking the law, lying, or otherwise needed to be brought to justice. Because the Eye could sense all the injustice on Earth, the Sentinels needed to have a strong tendency to mercy to balance it out; otherwise, the Eye would eventually destroy everyone because everyone at some point did something bad.

The Sentinels wore a lightweight yet incredibly strong suit of armor with the Eye of Vornak emblem across the chest. The suit also enabled flight. They were armed with dual plasma blasters and gauntlets that stored retractable blades. The gauntlets could also emit a powerful yet non-lethal sonic blast. Stored in the emblem were millions of nanobots that could scan areas, interact with tech, and also be used in combat.

When Earth rebelled against the Kore Empire, the White Sentinels were the first to stand against the rebellion. They were destroyed in battle, and the Eye of Vornak was taken away by the last surviving Sentinel. She took it far into the South American jungle until she died with it clutched in her hands.

Thousands of years later, an Ecuadorian tribe found her skeleton with the Eye still glowing in her fingers. They took it and stored it in a jungle temple, worshipping it as a god.

Many more years later, in modern times, an archaeologist named Victor West discovered the temple while on an expedition. The rest of his team had refused to come due to the rumors of a cannibal tribe in the area. Venturing inside, he finds the Eye enshrined on a pillar. He touches it and it bonds with him, interfacing with his mind and encasing him in his suit, along with the gauntlets and blasters. The Eye takes over and gets him out of the temple before he can be captured by the tribe that had worshipped the Eye for hundreds of years.

Eventually, he accepts the mantle of Vornak and works to fight injustice in the city of Blackholm.

That’s all I have planned out at the moment. Like I said, I’m working on these by myself, but hope to find some collaborators one day. I’m posting my stories on Wattpad as I finish them. Here’s the link for anyone interested: https://www.wattpad.com/user/_rebelplanet_

That's a pretty neat idea and thanks for sharing!

One question: You say this is comparable to a Golden Age setting yet with a modern perspective. Does this takes place in the past or present?

Both. I'm telling the story chronologically, so it begins in the 40's and the jumps to modern day. The allusion to Golden Age comics is my attempt to recreate the idealism of the old characters. I'm a dad to two kids, so I want to create stories they can read eventually and aspire to be like the heroes I create for them.

I think there's a lot of us out there! We should start a club or something.

I use Evernote. It's a really good tool for making and organizing notes, although I've heard a lot of people say One Note is better. No telling how many hundreds of notes I have about my superhero stories alone!
