Agents of Shield

My current biggest issue is the lack of background stories for any of the characters, and the two most bland characters seem to be pushed upfront. Outside of that, I'm enjoying it rather well. I'm just not sure it will ever be more than light fare though I'm sort of OK with that. It would be nice if there was potential for an "A Company Man"(Heroes) type of episode, but I'm not expecting much.

I think it kinda depends (..

I think it kinda depends (...like every adaptation of a pre-existing IP does now) on the viewers already knowing who's who and what's up.

...it's a bane of SO MANY things and breaks my big rule. You should never have to read the source to understand what's going on and why people do what they do. An adaptation should be able to stand on its own, something the superhero genre of films has done well with for a long time (save for.. Hulk..)

It, like most programmes,

It, like most programmes, shows potential. I am hoping they bring in a few supporting characters in regular roles. B grade heroes, like a modern Iron Fist for example, would be great. Have the odd "Super" in there to introduce them.

They could also use it as a spring board for a whole host of one off specials involving various heroes and maybe even mini series and full series.

As a tool to promote the hero genre it could be a good thing.... but I am dreaming here, this is US TV, they are flighty and fickle even if series are succesful they seem to bin them.

My fear is it becomes more of a secret agent spy thing. Instead of a MARVEL Superhero thing. Yes I know S.H.I.E.L.D. are technically Spys, but spys in a superhero universe.

The trailers for episode 1 fooled me for a bit. Here was a black man with super strength. Of course I thought of Luke Cage aka called Power Man.

My old SG from Champions

My old SG from Champions Online was an elite squad of nobodies from their international branch UNTIL. All I can say is it's the best dam superteam I've ever been apart of. I swear one of my friends in LA was the one to pitch "Agents of DE:LTA" to Disney.

Still a chance - Skye said she would furnish him with a new identity after all.....

In any case - while I don't want this show to turn into a "monster of the week" type show - Marvel does have a stable of street-level characters they could have turn up - like the aforementioned Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The Daredevil, Elektra, Punisher and Blade rights are back with Marvel now. Moon Knight could be used, as could Cloak and Dagger (at least I don't think they are too closely related to the X-men). Mockingbird is an obvious choice - being an actual SHIELD agent. They may even go for more powerful heroes/villains (they did introduce Graviton last episode after all - he's actually a big deal, as in he could be a movie-level threat)

Basically the only IPs marvel cannot tap for live action are the Fantastic Four, X-Men and Spiderman IPs (and unless Fox does something with the FF they will revert back to Marvel in 2014).

As for the show itself - it's not bad - the episodes are getting better. It's probably just one of those shows that will "find it's feet" as the season progresses.

Cloak and Dagger would be available, they are not X-men. They weren't even mutants until the mid-90s 'Everyone must be a mutant!!' craze resulted in a bit of a retcon for them.

Yup - but as far as I know they haven't actually done anything with the proposed movie yet. Fox can't just say "oh yeah - we're totally making another movie" and hang onto the rights. Nor can the movie be in perpetual "development" for years at a time. There have to be certain steps met. There is nothing stopping them from churning out another stinker just to keep the rights however....

Like some others have said, to me the episodes have gotten better every week - started off weak, but this latest episode was the best so far - so I'm excited to see where the series will go.
Also for those of you who haven't seen Arrow - I highly recommend it, one of my favorite shows right now :D

I'm giving the show 2 more

I'm giving the show 2 more eps. If nothing actually happens by ep 5 i'm done watching the series. It's clearly not what I had hoped. When it was marketed I thought it was going to be like Alphas. Ya know a team trying to cover up and gain control of these rogue mutants or super powered characters. But it wasn't. Then in ep 2 I thought it would be like Warehouse 13 where they look for these artifacts and contain them. But not really. The artifact was just a device to give the team an excuse to be there. It had no actual purpose and we learn like nothing about it. Just feels like nothing is part of even greater over arching scheme like Alphas and Warehouse were.

In the end its going to be a story about a girl that slowly develops a loving relationship with a hunky agent and eventually, will have to make the decision to be loyal or betray and then she'll betray cause, she thinks what shes doing is right and the guy will feel betrayed and leave her and then, because of her betrayal, something bad will have happened and all these innocent people will be endangered and then she'll try to make it all better again and the hunky agent will will always never fully trust her but will want to because hes in love with her. >.> just like every other show.

It did strike me that the last two episodes, in particular, were all about the team building/spirit. So much so that it was nearly the moral of the story. The action was fun, to be sure, but it amounted to little more than a context for the "we're becoming a team!" moment. After this last episode I have hopes that the characters can stop playing high school counselor and get on with the story.

This is a show that Whedon's

This is a show that Whedon's been all up inside of - so there are some good, and not so good things that come with that...

People think of Buffy or Firefly when they think of Joss Whedon shows and everyone says, "Wow those are huge fan success stories". But go back and watch either one of those from the beginning and notice...

Joss Whedon does not ever give you back story on lead characters until the second half - and in some cases - the second season.

Really. What he does is he continuously places them into situations and makes them interact over and over while he plays out his plot. You get to learn about the backstory in small snippets of dialog and interactions but you never learn anything meaty until at least second season.

Sorry Ell, but you've

Sorry Ell, but you've completely missed the rabbit trick going on with SHIELD. Actually 'both' rabbit tricks for this season you missed I'm guessing.

The real plot arc for this season is, "What really did happened to Coulson?" the rest of the hunky guy, sexy girl and betrayal? That's smoke and mirrors so your not paying attention to the clues they keep beating you about the head with.

The second plot ... which is a much more interesting one... to me anyway, is that even though 'Coulson can never know' about 'Tahiti', I don't think anyone else actually knows either.

They've been dropping hints all along that he's a robot/lmd... and that he's connected to the Scarlett Witch. I'm really more interested to see if they'll pull the trigger completely and say he's the Vision.

Not sure I go with Phil

Not sure I go with Phil Coulson being Vision. However there is that chance. The second Avengers movie was being written at the same time it would be an interesting connection. The Silver age Vision was an android "synthezoid" created by Ultron.

I doubt they'll do it now

I doubt they'll do it now that Coulson is as popular as he is, but if you look at the statements made through the various movies and the Avengers there's actually a case for it.

When Stark is trying to be snarky he refers to himself as an L.M.D. when Coulson is trying to call. Later on in the Avenger's after he's dead they mention that he had 'someone, in Portland, a Cellist'. Which, Wanda Maximoff - the Scarlett Witch, was a cellist. According to Marvel's database, only two characters openly refer to or are seen playing a cello - the Scarlet Witch, and Kate Bishop (Young Avengers - Hawkeye).

Since I don't see Chuck really being into teen agers... so I'd fall more toward it being Wanda. Wanda, of course was married to the Vision, who was created from the brain engrams of a dead avenger (Wonder Man) and a modified body of the original Human Torch (who is seen in Captain America in the world's fair scene).

So - - it's possible. Me I didn't see it working, until... well, there's a guy out there who for fun... did a sculpture of Clark Gregg, Coulson as the Vision.

So, it's possible. But with Coulson as popular as he is on his own, I'm not sure they're going to with him being the brain of Coulson in the body of an LMD/Android that becomes the Vision. In the comics, Ultron creates the Vision from the Synthezoid body of the original Human torch and Simon Williams' engrams... so it's possible that Whedon could be building this up so he can use Clark Gregg in the Avengers as the Vision. But he's pretty much said that's not gonna happen.

We do know the Marvel Movie

We do know the Marvel Movie universe is it's own. Thought they do follow the spirit of the comics they do change things. Also a way to boost Coulson from Miner mannered Agent to a true Superpower Hero. Given his popularity fan pressure could change the creative minds.

Like you said there are Seeds planted to support this idea. Phil Coulson dead or dying they copy his minds engrams and he's now a L.M.D. that latter might be upgraded or in the Avengers 2 movie he chooses to Download himself into the Synthezoid to take it over and becomes the Vision.

I've got my own theory about Coulson's secret. He was never on Tahiti.

He was on Bora Bora.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I really enjoy The Agent Phil

I really enjoy The Agent Phil Coulson Show. Sorry, that's how I see it. I am annoyed by Skye- she is too pretty and too witty and too cool and too smart and so on and so forth. She strikes me as a Mary Sue type. As for forgettable Secret Agent Man, he's the one-dimensional straw-man you can attrib anything you want to that you don't like. I love love *love* Fitz-Simmons (and the actress who plays Fitz is super-cute). They've made a big deal about Ming-Na being *The*Calvary*, so we'll see where that goes.

Anyway, the bottom line is that I don't think about it too much, I just like watching Coulson own everything. He's like this Alpha Geek that we all aspire to (I love how in the movie he totally becomes a giggling fan boy around Capt America). ;-)

With this type of story, you

With this type of story, you need to start with particular archetypes so people get familiar with them, hint at what makes him different (what's the story behind "the cavalry's" aversion to the field, what happened to coulson, etc) and then, once those hooks are set, evolve the characters over time.

I know Joss likes the "strong woman" character- I do as well, but Syke's currently seems too perfect- smart, witty, overly-telegraphed romantic interests, etc. The weaknesses aren't really weaknesses, and the tenuous nature with the team seems too overplayed. The 'shipping with Grant seems so overly-telegraphed that I'm half expecting one of the two to die in classic Joss fashion before the end of the first season.

Grant is too hard nosed- and the "softening of the hardass character" is such a common theme as to become an archetype all to itself. he's the embodiment of the shield suit without the coolness of Coulson. I'm looking for more from his character development, but I think it'll take quite a bit to shake him out of this rather stereotypical template.

Fitz and Simmons are fun, (and they put a Scottsman in Engineering, always a good thing) and I hope some issues will bring these two to the fore.

Overall, I've decided to follow it. It has enough hooks to keep me tuned in and the characters have enough places that they can go for them to break away from that original archetype.... I just hope they don't continue down the predictable path with them.

As for me I can't really stop

As for me I can't really stop comparing these new characters with old ones from Joss' past...

Agent Coulson = Giles (for obvious reasons as the key acerbic "leader" guy with a mysterious backstory)
Skye = Buffy (at least as far as the quippy, scarastic personality goes that the show is nominally centered around)
Melinda May = Faith and/or Zoe (as the semi-distant, kick-ass no-nonsense female fighter type)
Grant Ward = Angel (as the fighter guy who akwardly doesn't mesh with everyone else socially)
Leo Fitz = Topher (the too easily excitable main boffin from Dollhouse)
Jemma Simmons = Willow and/or Kaylee (basically a cute tech-based boffin version of Willow)

Basically I'm not really sure I like this show yet. It seems like a watered-down pale shadow of Joss' previous shows - that's probably why I'm spending too much time trying to "equate" these new characters to older (argueably better) ones. I realise that Whedon loves to build up his shows and that it often takes many episodes to finally get the big picture of what's going on. But at least with his previous shows I was basically already "hooked" from the beginning with a certain level of anticipation - this show not so much. In fact I'm almost to the point where the ONLY reason I'm still watching is that it's a Whedon show. If this was anyone else's show I might have given up already.

I'll give it at least the rest of the season to see if it finally drops in some Whedon-eqsue plot twists to make it truly worthwhile.

Well if Whedon was smart he'd borrow all those Dr. Horrible characters and retool them as at least "guest stars of the week" for Agents of SHIELD. Most of them were already vaguely-generic heroes/villains with minor superpowers which would be perfect for this new show.

Enjoying the show, but it' making me actually dislike S.H.I.E.L.D. So far they've done nothing but trample the rights of people.

Agent Coulson is great!

I fail to see the appeal of May that I keep hearing. Grant at least has had humor. May is just good looking/sexy/beautiful/insert adjective here, bad ass, who kicks ass. I see all these complaints about Grant being bland, but May isn't really any different.

Fitz and Simmons, not enough screen time yet, but they've been fun so far.

Skye is Skye.

Overall, I've enjoyed the show however, just fail to see where some of the complaints are coming from when I read them about the cast. :p
