Its been previously suggested for a player designed sidekick pet.
It would be a simple purchase at the game store, and you could design your sidekick any way you want (quadrupeds may not be available at launch-but eventually you could get animal pets as well).
The sidekick would not engage in combat, not be target-able, and would follow you around.
Your kick could be anything, from a fledgling hero to a Lois Lane/Jimmy Olson, to a robot girlfriend.
The kick would be a toggle on/off power, and would come with a basic emote package.
Other idle time packages could be purchased to further enhance your new pet kick.
Reporter: Idle package: will interview your avatar during downtime.
Lover: Idle package: will gaze lovingly at your PC with hearts floating over their head
Boy Wonder idle package: will catch his fist with his hand and excitedly discuss crime with the PC, (word balloons will say things like, "Holey Cow, Cyclops. You sure taught the Bossy Bovine a thing or two!")
Wife Idle package: Holds a baby in one arm, flips pancakes in a pan in the other. Takes money from PC. Opens purse, give PC a breath mint. Irons uniform. Vacuums area around PC.
Mutant Mentor idle package. bald guy in a wheelchair gives PC a lecture.
Tannimm idle package. Beats PC with a red crowbar. Trips PC with crowbar. Laughs pointing at PC. basically abuses PC.
Sith Package: Bows (word balloon) "Yes, My Master"

Functionally this could work just like the CoH non-combat vet pets did with the extra bonus feature that this sidekick pet could have its own costume slot (just like a player character gets). This way this pet could basically look any way the player wants. One other feature you could choose is whether this pet would Hover or not - as you remember some of the vet pets stood next to you and others Hovered nearby. I figure the choice for this could be handled by a simple radio button on the pet's costume creator GUI.
Now the whole idea of the "idle time emotes" might be cool too, but to be honest in order to keep this simple I wouldn't mind if these sidekick pets just acted exactly like the CoH vet pets did. By keeping these very simple and having no effect on combat whatsoever I figure they would be relatively simple to implement at some point for CoT. The idle time emote package idea could always be added later on.
P.S. For what it's worth your "wife idle package" probably isn't too "politically correct"... just saying...

I laughed as I typed that. I've run into a few PC arguments just lately. It initially started out as a Mom Idle emote where the player would auto, say, "Mom, cut it out! My friends will see!"
My wife thinks The Wife Idle ought to roll her eyes, tap her toe, and pull out a rolling pin...But that's not near as fun.

It might be a bit "old school" but this might be a funny version of a "nagging wife" sidekick:

Five hundred!?!?!?!!
That might generate a lot of lag. No more than a handful at a time, I think. ^_^

If you purchase the sidekick option 500 times...it might count as an invasion
The devs would flip a switch and make the sidekicks targetable.
It would add a twist to, "Looking for Team...or else, INVASION!"

Yeah I wasn't thinking so much that there'd ever be more than one sidekick pet. I was just thinking the "nagging wife" sidekick could randomly spout off any of those kinds of "nags" at any given time. :)
