Mobile Platform Integration

I'm an adult now with a full life. One of my major complaints about playing a theme-park MMO is just the time commitment. I don't have 4 hours in a night to dedicate to sitting in front of the computer anymore.

Generally the MMO industry would say "not our problem" BUT perhaps there's a market for the game/company that takes the MMO experience beyond sitting in front of your computer. We had the same revolution about music (the creation of the Walkman, then discman for music.. and now mobile television on any device). Why should gaming not be next?

- -

Know what took me the most time in most games I used to play? Crafting, Getting expendables ready for raids, and all other forms of "battle prep". I would give almost ANY amount of money to be able to just do all that remedial task stuff on my mobile.

I know that CoT has much less focus on gear, expendables, etc but there are still so many non-combat systems that I'd be so happy to do offline (including stand around/talk RP).

You may say whats the difference between that and the AOL chatrooms of old? It's on my mobile device, that's what. Humans have now adapted to using these screens like it's a third leg. Use them while eating, driving, ... even sleeping.

- -

Give me a non-combat component of the game I can use on my phone for chat, crafting, costume, and all other tiny tasks and I'll pay (monthly even) for that application.

Agreed.

Agreed.

The "doability" of it is a separate (possibly fatal) issue, but being able to fiddle with everything other than being actively "ingame" on mobile would be pure genius, addictive, and a next-gen home run.

It would probably--no, definitely--make the game as visionary as AE and other things did for CoH. And each little meta-game module would be an amazingly addictive app that could be a micro-transacted income source.

This would be sexy, and profitable.

IF doable.

Well aren't they going to

Well aren't they going to release the costume creator as a standalone? Not a programmer so no idea how difficult porting to mobile would be, but that seems like a good idea if possible.

As long as there's a way for

As long as there's a way for 3rd party devs to Export/Import to the main game, leave the rest to them.

Well, to be fair, a super simple code example made by MWM of a Mids for PC/MAC(/and perhaps Linux) might draw in devs who will take code and perhaps extend it... and a few might make it to the mobile platforms. :)

Arghh... Add-On's or Plugins wont work for Mobile versions, I'm kinda certain, like it might for Desktop versions... so that might not be the best approach in the long run.

Well, maybe if Unreal Engine adopts something like Unity AssetBundles. :]
Maybe UE has, I just haven't really looked into it yet. :{

while I like the idea I am

while I like the idea I am not completely sold on it for various reasons. the amount of resources and time it would take to get such an integrated system up and running, possible dumbing down that would possibly need to occur, etc. making apps able to tap into the live game to craft and such seems like it would be a serious pain given they would have to just about redesign a good portion of the controls to work on mobile devices....and if that was done then one can better their bottom dollar that people will start demanding that the entire game itself be available for play... you know it would happen.

my personal taste says keep the mobile apps to items that are done outside of the game. design only type stuff. if people want to chit chat with their buddies there are tons of apps out there that already fulfill this niche. if you want to craft...well...kinda sucks but you need to log into the game proper to do so.

I think they said in the Kickstarter they were planning on releasing the costume creator for phones/tablets.

Being able to access certain chat channels from a mobile device could be nice too. I've no idea what that would involve.

The character creator on iOS and Android were stretch goals that were reached (along with a Mac OS version of the game at launch).

Thanks.
I tried to look it up but was blocked by the filters on our system at work.

One of the few things I did

One of the few things I did like about WoW (during the brief time that I played it) was the Mobile Armory app they had that allowed you to manage your in game inventory, mailbox and auctions from a mobile device. Basically by logging in on your account, you could sell or buy items on the auction house, mail/guild chat with guidmates, access the in game calendar, spec your character etc. Pretty much anything except actually playing the game.

Whilst it might be difficult to make the entire game Mobile compatible without adversely effecting the PC game(one of my biggest gripes with the most recent slate of MMOs is how they try to make controls/UI fit the Console market which will often have a knock-on effect for PC players) I think a 'Companion App' would be an interesting possibility.

I believe that this is the

I believe that this is the only way forward, for this or any other game, if you want more people to be immersed in the game at all times of the day, not just those "4" hours in front of the computer screen, then this is the way to do it. Have it be a all in one app that you can create, show off costumes, builds, new items, new powers. I think this should be a top priority below the content of the main game.

I would not be surprised if

I would not be surprised if there were phones and tablets based on the upcoming low power Intel chips and Windows 10 that could play the whole game on low graphic settings.

The impression I got was that it would be something similar to Neverwinter's Gateway. You have access to crafting, AH, inventory, character sheet, mail, currency exchanges, cash shop, guild and even a site specific "mini-game".
There was no redesign or "dumbing down" of the game client since they built two different "clients", each with their own specific purpose and capabilities, which is a benefit from one regard. The more different this "external" client is the less likely players would be in demanding that one can play through it since it will most likely be viewed as an extra utility rather than a "game client".

And hopefully we will have a

And hopefully we will have a zone to load into with the character creator. Basically a Paragon Chat model for CoT's character creator. Something simple with chat for the new game while we wait for the full release.
