Miss Mental

Hello. New. Thought I'd make my first post a backstory for one of my characters, because I'm cool like that.
Threat Assessment—Classified

I have been instructed to present an accurate, complete, and concise report on the superbeing known as Miss Mental. These are my findings.

Alias: Miss Mental

Legal Name: Annabelle D. Jones

Species: Homo sapiens

Status: Registered Superhero

Threat Level: High

Reasoning: My attempt to study Annabelle Jones covertly was an utter failure from the outset—her psychic abilities are powerful and discerning, and I was discovered within minutes. I attempted to terminate the operation and flee, but she hounded me for several miles and caught me with her telekinesis when I attempted to leap from one roof to another. Trapped, I was forced to improvise, and settled on a course of action that could possibly salvage the mission, and cause further detriment to our enemies.

I told her I was the representative of a secret organization dedicated to combating the spread of dangerous artifacts, knowledge, and science—specifically, keeping such things out of the hands of criminals. I gave her just enough information about a select few of our operations that she could confirm my story. I further told her I was observing her for possible recruitment, and that detecting and catching me was a test of her worth.

She did not entirely believe me. It is my professional opinion that, despite my extensive and formidable ability to combat mental intrusion—the very thing that got me selected for this particular assignment—she was able to glean just enough to know that I was not being wholly truthful. That said, she was still curious, so I then set my hook: I gave her a time and location to meet me, and there I would prove myself to her.

We then met the next day outside of a fortified gang hideout. This particular group had been a scourge upon the neighborhood, coming into power largely due to their having acquired a chemical formula capable of giving them super strength and durability. She was suspicious, having sensed my untruthfulness the previous day, but agreed to fight alongside me.

We engaged the malcontents, and the fighting was fierce. The drug made them formidable, and several of them had taken enough to make them not only abnormally strong, but hyper-aggressive to the point of madness. The only way to put them down was to use what might in other situations be considered excessive force.

In an attempt to throw off Miss Jones' suspicions, I put up the facade that I was merely a normal human, and fought as such for the majority of the encounter. However, in the "heat of battle," I revealed my powers to her, and led her to believe that is what I was attempt to conceal from her. Given that she was currently grappling with a slavering banger, she was unable to scrutinize me closely, and bought the story.

During the fight, a portion of Miss Jones' character revealed itself to me. Though her telekinetic abilities are extensive and powerful, she preferred to fight hand-to-hand. She channeled that power through her own body, giving her the appearance of super strength and invulnerability. Combined with her martial arts training, this made her more than a match for her foes.

Worryingly, however, she became consumed by a battlerage disturbingly similar to that which possessed the gangsters, and I believe that it was only through my intervention that fatalities were averted. Further, at several points, she made non-sequitur remarks to what appeared to be thin air.

When the fight was done, I secured the formula, which is presently located at one of our blacksites. Miss Jones expressed a willingness to repeat the experience, and I sensed an opportunity. I gave her another time and location. And then another. And then another. And so on, for months to come.

During this time, I came to an indisputable conclusion: Annabelle Jones is insane.

She is delusional, emotionally volatile, violently aggressive, and suicidally reckless. She displayed little regard for her own safety and only slightly more for mine. She was willing to use extreme force with little cause. Her moods often shifted within the space of a single sentence. And, I began to suspect that she suffered from split personality disorder.

The extent of her derangement was made clear to me during one particular meeting, wherein an associate of hers, himself a psychic, confided in me that she suffered from far worse than a mere split personality—she had formed an entirely divergent consciousness within her brain, wholly separate and sovereign from herself. This is an extremely rare—but not unheard of—event, generally a danger only present to powerful psychics who have difficulties controlling their power because of preexisting mental instability.

For her part, Miss Jones was completely aware of her problem, and attempted to downplay its severity. Nevertheless, she would often speak to the consciousness aloud, occasionally shouting at it for some overly snide remark.

After learning all of this, I dug into Miss Jones' past, using the information that put her on our radar to begin with to guide me.

What I found was alarming.

Aside from the incidents we already know about—namely, altercations with fellow heroes—I found evidence of violence against civilians, excessive force as standard operating procedure, illegal use of her psychic abilities, intimidation, and likely, torture. I spoke to several acquaintances from before and during her early superheroic career, who informed me that they could reliably connect her to several incidences of theft and drug use. Further, it is my belief that she operated as an illegal vigilante for several years before becoming legally registered, and given the methods she employed while ostensibly being held responsible for her actions, I can only begin to imagine the brutality that entailed.

Having established what I thought was a rapport with Miss Jones, I—admittedly, directly against the parameters of my mission—confronted her with my findings. She was highly defensive, claiming that each and every incident I named had mitigating factors and outside influences necessitating that she act as she did. When I pressed her about her vigilantism, she reluctantly came clean, admitting that she had. She claimed, however, that a combination of her homelessness and not being of legal age forced her to act as she did, for the protection of herself and others. When I brought up the alleged instances of theft, she sank into a black mood, and retreated into herself. The only comment she would offer is that I "clearly have never been hungry." Further conversation was unproductive, so I let it be.

These are the findings I present to you, and this is my comment on them:

I believe Miss Jones is capable of profoundly poor judgement. I believe that her instability makes her danger to herself and others, and the wrong stimulus at the wrong time could push her over the edge.

I also believe Miss Jones acts on good faith, despite all this. In the short time I knew her, she displayed altruism, valor, and tenacity. She clearly has the (occasionally grudging) respect of her peers, and is never afraid to act on their judgment, should she perceive her own failing her.

And so it is my recommendation that we take no immediate action against her, and instead place her under close observation. This way, we can monitor her mental state, and make a solid determination on whether her minacious actions truly are the demands of necessity. If not, this will also give us all we need to justify a more permanent solution.

I will, of course, volunteer for this assignment. Miss Jones as shown an uncanny psychic awareness, making covert surveillance nigh impossible. Because I have already established myself within her inner circle, I am the most logical choice to subvert this. And should preventative action be necessary, I will be most optimally placed to carry it out.

Progress Report—4/11

Miss Jones has begun to express doubts about my cover and mission, mostly stemming from my confrontation with her about her past. She is starting to suspect my true purpose with her, if she hasn't already deduced it outright.

Nevertheless, she it still willing to work with me, though she is considerably more distant and reserved. This makes her difficult to investigate, as she is much more careful about who she lets me associate with among her personal circle. She has warned all of her associates not to talk to me if I come around, so I've had to be much more oblique about my information gathering.

I would like the organization to put its resources towards collecting security camera footage from Hardwick's Auto Repair, dated exactly one year ago. I believe this will help us clear up at least one instance of wrongdoing in Miss Jones' past, one way or another.

Progress Report—4/12

The footage clearly exonerates Miss Jones. The gunmen would have killed that child, had she not acted as she had. Unless we are suddenly overly concerned with property damage, I believe we can lay this matter to rest.

This also, in my opinion, lends a certain credence to many of her claims, though I obviously am not going to take her word on it.

Progress Report—5/25

I have uncovered the truth behind Miss Jones' drug habits—painkillers and narcotics. She became addicted to them in her early vigilante career, after sustaining injuries, when she felt she could not go to the hospital without being arrested. She claims to have "kicked the habit" a year ago.

Finding no evidence of anything serious beyond this, I am going to let this particular line of inquiry rest. It is not really our area of concern anyway.

Progress Report—6/2

I have managed to crack one of Miss Jones confidants.

My findings were not encouraging.

Though the information was given with the intent to clear Miss Jones' name, it more or less confirms her history of violence, both against civilians and friendly superheroes. The sandwich shop incident were she put her dayjob manager in the hospital, the Starbucks incident where she left a fellow hero with a concussion, the patrol conflict with the Battle Battalion—all of these have one underlying theme:

Annabelle Jones lost her temper.

Several excuses and justifications were offered to clear her name, and they should be considered (I recorded our conversation—open the attached mp3 file for details), but the fact is, Miss Jones simply loses control. This is unacceptable. She cannot continue to perpetrate violence on her comrades and noncombatants. It is counterproductive to our mission.

However, because of the aforementioned justifications, I am recommending a slightly different course of action than removal. Remember, we are not here to cast moral, legal, or ethical judgments—we are here to ensure that as many supers as possible are on the correct side of justice. I therefore ask that we arrange for Miss Jones to receive therapy and medication, because I truly believe that she is capable of furthering our cause. This can be done however it needs to be—against her will, if I cannot talk her into it, but I feel the attempt must be made.

I will attempt to broach the subject at our next meeting.

Progress Report—6/3

To preface this, Annabelle has agreed to take time off for therapy.

This came after she attacked me, admittedly, having done some of her own digging and ascertained my true purpose. I attempted to calm her down and reason with her, but she was beyond talk. I was forced to fight.

Channeling her internal telekinesis, she was stronger and more durable than I, could fly, is an expert martial artist, and had ranged attacks on top of that, when she remembered them. I was forced to retreat and counterattack for the majority of the battle, my options limited due to most of them being lethal.

I finally did transform, partially, and had to use all of my strength to drive my claws into her abdomen. The shock of this injury finally snapped her out of her berserker fury, and I was able to speak with her.

I came clean about my intentions—secrecy, at this point, serves no purpose beyond angering her. I told her of our organization, our goals, and my mission. She managed to accept without flying into a rage, though that might simply have been the bloodloss.

I brought up my proposal for therapy. She resisted at first. I brought up the evidence I'd uncovered. She defended her actions. I then showed her the millions in property damage she had just inflicted upon the city. She realized that she may have a problem.

At this point, I took my hand out of her stomach and proceeded to carry her to the hospital.

Her prognosis is fine—apparently, her invulnerability extends to her internal organs, so I was unable to do significant damage. I am going to ask that my action plan be enacted as quickly as possible—her moods are mercurial, and she may change her mind when she's not on heavy dosages of painkillers (I will monitor her to ensure her addiction does not become an issue).

Will continue in a different character profile! Yay!
