A Suggestion for the Forums

I don't know how much you can do to the layout of the forum pages, if anything. But, if possible, can you put page numbers above the first post of each page in addition to the page numbers already at the bottom of each page? Pretty please?

Putting yourself in another persons shoes emotionally is something that everyone has to experience eventually. It's part of learning to be a human being. Roleplayers do it for fun.

By the way, when a thread is more than one page long, and I click on the number of new posts it doesn't take me to the first new post, just to the top of the first page. Then I have to go to the last page and look for the first new post myself.

Oh and can't you delete those threads where people are advertising their online drug stores?

That is strange, because it works for me. I click the "new posts" in the replies column and not the actual thread title.

I know that our forum moderators are hard at work removing spam posts, and the fact that we aren't overwhelmed by them is a testament to their efforts.

That's what I see after I click the "new post" button on the first page. But if I click the "x new posts" button on the tracking page, and the first new post isn't on the first page of the thread, that button takes me to the top of the first page. Yes, and they do appreciate the occasional PM about new 'commercial' posts, especially with a account-name and link to the post in question. You may note that those posts rarely last more than a day. Minotaur is the moderator who I've corresponded with most often.

One thing I read on a gaming

One thing I read on a gaming site: Put general discussion up towards the *TOP* of the forums.

It's a basic layout thing, and it is one that I do agree with. But it helps out a crap load with getting people to engage in it.

Also make the group names make sense.

ie Lairs and Hangouts...

That makes it sound like a housing/base building section. And that the general discussion within that would be linked to it.

Of course, once you have had a look around inside, you realise that is NOT the case. But why make it hard(er) for people to work out what it is for rather than be upfront.

I mean, all of the other forum sections are clearly labelled with what they cover.

Just not the actual "general conversation/off topic" area.

It doesn't help in that it is actually two whole forum sections (and a nice page and a half scrolling) UNDER the Free 2 play section, and "Player Help and Information" is a hell of a trip to get down there, and the further down you go, the more "focused" the area's tend to be. Tech support is *typically* under the general discussion on gaming forums. Here, you have placed it almost up front and center.

To an untrained eye, this gives the impression of "talk about tech problems here first, then go elsewhere".

I am not saying *remove* forum sections, but just try to make sure that it makes sense. Hell, I have been here for a long time, but I have had some people say "Where do I go to look for X talk" on these forums, if they want to have a look at what is happening.

I tell them, and the most common response is "What a load of toss, it looks like they don't want you talking about general stuff here".

Even with collapsible forum sections (which we don't have here) I would still recommend moving the various sections around. It would just help a load. Hell, most of what is in the F2P section would better be suited in general discussion for NOW.

But because F2P was up front and center, that is where you have lead people to believe is a good place to post.

The link I use to come to this site takes me directly to the What's New page.
I never look at the categories, or any other pages, unless someone posts a link.
Why would I?
Honestly I don't know why you even have categories
it seems like needless complication
The site isn't busy enough to need them.

and if it were that busy I would probably leave.
I don't feel comfortable on sites that crowded.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't play the game
but once you start advertising and the forum becomes really busy
you probably won't see me here any more.

If you notice, I didn't say anything about the development side. I just said that even now it would more sense for "general discussion" to be higher up and better labelled.

To be honest, the first couple of sections, I have NO problem with.

News and updates up top. Already done
Developement up next. Makes sense, already done.

Then Free 2 Play.

Err ok. We don't even have a game able to play, and right now there are NO restrictions on who can post where (exception Red Name only sections which we cannot see)

Then Player help and Information.
Err ok. Once again, bit strange to have this here.

Then we get to Lairs and Hangouts.

This is one of the *busiest* sections of the forums. And it is labelled such that it looks like it is referring to *HOUSING* and Base Building. Its title is totally misleading. It is towards the bottom of the forums.

Classification and Powers.

Title makes sense. And although it is lower down... most game forums seem to send the "Class" forums towards the mid/bottom of the forums.

The thing is, the amount of time to resolve this is in the region of MINUTES. If it takes longer than this to change the layout of groups for the forum then they have made the worst choice possible concerning the forum software.

But we all know how fast the developers move when it concerns forums.... their main point of conversation with us, and we are lucky to get anything sorted towards it in over a year of asking.

WOW!

WOW!
I just looked at the "Forums" page for the first time.
If I'd seen that when I first came here, I'd have never gotten involved in this site.
Boy is it needlessly complicated.
The whats new page is really all you need.

Wow, I just had a thought.
I'm going to go check out some of the many forums I've shied away from over the years and see if any of them have a what's new page I can go to to bypass all the crap.

To be fair, the fact that the there is "no minimize" section forum, so that you can hide out of view the sections that you don't want to see doesn't help here.

That by itself could help out a load.

Most forums have at *some* level a "what news" page. This is typically as a "show new posts since last visit". However, this is two edged. If you are not paying attention to some sections of the forum that are busy, the stuff you are interested in could be shoved right down at the bottom of the page(s) from what you are really wanting to look at. For me, if the RP section is busier than other sections more recently, I could find "general discussion" stuff rammed at the bottom.

Now for me, I tend to do the "scroll down through the categories, get to the sections I pay attention to, read em, and mark as read the ones I DON'T read".

There is a reason why I do the "mark as read for stuff I don't read" and that is because it *ensures* that the posts get removed from all "whats new since last visit" across a wide range of forum softwares.

Some even have a quick link to mark as read the forums. This is handy if there are a lot of sub forums so you don't have to click through them individually.

For the quieter forums, it make sense. For busier forums, it can be incredibly overwhelming.

^^^ this

the rest I can deal with, although I have to agree with Gangrel that the 'ordering' choice of the various sections seems a lil weird given the game is still only in development. why even have sections regarding a live game when the game won't be live for over a year? not to mention that this site itself will most likely be changed over to the new one by that point....

having unneeded sections just makes the site/forums that much more confusing for new folks wandering in for the first time.

Part of the problem now is that there is a lot of weight behind the forum sections to make sure that you don't remove them.

Personally, I would have seen how it went at the start and then add sections as and when.

So if this meant not "Free to play" section at the start, then so be it.

Now that it has been used, it is impossible to remove them without causing people distress.

Infact, right now, this is now at a stage where even *rearranging* the forums seems to be causing people distress.... And if the game goes live with the forums in their current state?

Trust me, people will NOT be as nice about it. And I am not talking about me, I am talking about new customers coming in.

Hell, even in the CoX forums, if I remember correctly, the EU section was right down towards the bottom of the forums. It has its own copy of the main "General discussion" style subforums (General discussion, meet up, OOC stuff).

And it DIED. It was barely used by EU players because it was hidden away in a small section of the forums towards the bottom half. Infact due to this, it did make the EU playerbase feel like 2nd class citizens, not on an equal standing on the US account holders[1]

So the best thing to do? Nip it in the bud, even before the "kickstarter" beta starts. Sure, we might get complaints NOW. But if it eases the pain later on, when the flood gates open, then so be it.

[1] It also didn't help infact that when the forums were merged, the general tone from some of the US players was a "Welcome to OUR forums". That was really obnoxious in my mind. And something that didn't really help tensions between various player groups. Other actions later on just really put me off US players by and large.

I am! mwahahaha! >:)

...actually, as Gangrel mentions it is way to late to remove any sections, but I would consider reording them according to importance in regards to where the game stands now. as the game is not even active and won't be for years...I would move those parts to the bottom....to lessen the possible confusion that the game is active now. not gonna happen so really this is all just an academic exercise. :p

In reading over this thread, I'm starting to think that Discourse might be a good solution for us. It's a radical and sexy alternative to the classic forum. You can browse by recent posts, by category, or by user, and you can get notified (via email and on-site) of changes to topics that interest you. It's very fluid.

It may look a little off-putting to the uninitiated, but I've taken it for a spin, and it's pretty slick. Don't knock it 'til you try it.

How easy would it be though to transfer existing posts over though?

This is one of the problems that can happen when you run with an old set of software, and then try to transfer over to something "better".

Sure, there are bridges/transfer services available... but they don't cover all the bases (or setups) or can be ropey as heck.

I cannot remember what they are using here, but from what I can remember, it is a facility of their CMS (Joomla/Drupal for example) rather than being a piece of code that is *specialised* in forum running (like SMF/phpbulletin/Vbulletin software).

At the start, you make choices on how you put it all together. Once you have made those choices, and depending on how deeply integrated you are into the ecosystem, it can make it quite hard to change to something different.

I have no idea. There would probably need to be some SQL voodoo involved. Linking existing accounts to a new authentication system would likely have to happen, too, and that probably wouldn't be easy (though Discourse does have single sign-on for integration with existing authentication mechanisms).

Don't I know it! They're still teaching Fortran, COBOL, and VAX assembly at my college because some businesses are still stuck on old systems from the 80's. Upgrading is not always easy, but the alternative is to live with your existing system's limitations or bring on some developers to mutate it. The latter can be like opening Pandora's Box and can create a catch-22 where you need changes to the system because you can't upgrade and you can't upgrade because you made changes to the system that are now essential.

Which future will MWM choose for their website? Who knows. I've heard it said that the site will be upgraded, but there's never any real news about it. If that's their intention, then hopefully they don't paint themselves into a corner with this system.

A feature of some other forums I like is the ability to mark everything as "read".
It makes it a bit easier to know when there's an update in a sub-forum without having to click on every single thread to clear the new post counters.

I think he is meaning a singular "Mark as read" to mark EVERYTHING on the forum read, instead of having to do it category by category.
