I know I shouldn't but I can't help myself.
I'm not paying for a game right now and I missed the kickstarter. I would HAPPILY get on a "sponsor a coder" or "sponsor an artist" monthly billing donation or something like that for a typical sub price. If enough people did it to pay for one coder or artist doing some contract work as needed, that seems like it would help and help expedite things.
Anyway, sincerely, same good praise and stuff that everyone else said, but, dammit, I wanna help and I have no applicable skills!

With all the planning they've done for future improvements, I get the sense that there's plenty of room for hope that they can still apply the perfect solution whenever they happen to get it.

Honestly think we should be able to donate or fund the project still
Funding through the KS is already risky for the backers, because they're giving money they don't know they'll see a return on, with no way to get it back.
Likely the reason they're not wanting to get more money from people right now, because doing so and not getting anything back for it will look bad, worse if they're not making deadlines.
Good point, but if it's above board donations to the effort with no grantee--which I'm personally comfortable doing--why not? Not everyone is comfortable with that, but, then, not everyone has to do it if it's clearly defined and voluntary. This wouldn't be another Kickstarter and so expectations/parameters wouldn't have to be the same.
FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)
I think they are smart until they can show something solid like the character designer or some type of gameplay in pre-alpha format. Whether someone has the option to pay or not, asking for more money carries a certain perception and can turn prospective players/contributors off the project. I've seen the term goodwill associated with KS projects many times and how it can quickly run out. It is a sentiment I agree with and I see no reason to preemptively drain the goodwill they have now. Why not use it strategically with a huge announcement and release of part of the product? i.e. Build momentum for the project. Unless MWM comes out and says something like "we are so close but just need a couple paid coders/animators/etc with the expertise to finish, then at this time it seems wasteful to establish ongoing funding.
I also see ongoing funding as putting more pressure on the team, something that is not needed in their current situation of working full time jobs then doing this on the side as I doubt it would be enough for everyone to quit their jobs. As of now, I'm ok with the timeline. I like the planning and giving them enough time to figure out business, design and technical issues. I believe there will be a time where these guys move from amateur to professional in regards to making an MMO. Hopefully we can recognize this transition THEN that would be a good time to ask for additional funding assuming the original KS donations hold out.
I'm not here to rush things along but I will definitely consider helping out if the team runs into monetary issues as long as I can see real effort is still being made. This will be a game I plan to play for many years so I want to keep mistakes to a minimum.
tldr: I'm confident in MWM's decision to hold off on additional funding until the time is right.
Reward tactics as well as damage dealing.
I'm confident too, I'm just whining because I missed the KS, have no useful skills (that's what my wife tells me :P), and want to help.
So, probably best to pretty much ignore me :). Just bellyaching.
FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)
I didn't see a whiner, just someone that wants to help and is anxious as the rest of us to play this game. We can still disagree on the approach but I think we can agree the best people to make the decisions are already in charge. Pretty much anything I've seen you post is nothing but positive and trying every which way to cheer MWM on. I'm glad to come to these forums and read such posts.
Reward tactics as well as damage dealing.
Well, first, thanks :).
Second, I've actually read some things recently about whether devs should listen to the "vocal minority" or not, and the consensus seems to be "yes, but not too much."
So, agreed, they know best.
FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)
While I agree that it would be cautious, and even wise, for MWM to have something to show (not necessarily a full-blown AB) before they open the gates again, let's not confuse the people, like Empyrean, who are asking MWM for the chance to put their money into the project with MWM asking for more money.

My only deep concern is how well are they protected from catastrophic failure? If major earthquake, fire or hacking incident screws up the facilities (I.e. Wherever the gear and software is), I have my doubts that they will be able to reconstitute their current position with a third of their KS (220k-ish).
I'm not sure how it would be confusing. I think my original point still stands and asking for money, even with a ton of disclaimers, for those that missed the KS is something to be carefully weighed on how it affects the overall project. You can sometimes read negative comments on sites like Massively(though the original site is gone) among other MMO news sites about this project so I can only imagine if they started asking for more money without any 'shinies' to show off. Yes, it would be great to accommodate people like Empyrean but I don't see such a move staying within the scope of that range of interested people.
It's all moot at this point because they are not asking for any more money right now. I will also reiterate that I have confidence MWM will start a new round of fund-raising at the appropriate time. When that time is right, everyone that missed the KS and wanted to contribute will get their chance at helping make their new home.
Reward tactics as well as damage dealing.
I wasn't really paying attention since I've already contributed but looking at the front page, can't you just buy a T-shirt to donate to MWM or are they not using it in that aspect? Or is the point to get perks like a KS for your donation?
Reward tactics as well as damage dealing.
That's one of the advantages to their distributed business. Any software that they can't just ask the supplier for another download is likely spread out over many machines in many locations. Certainly I expect them to have backups of their own work.
And I would hope that the closets where they store the gear that they got a good deal on but don't need yet are insured. ^_^

It would be nice if they could do something monthly like selling merchandise. I don't see a problem with raising funds that way. At the very least, the person gets something tangible. If there is a problem with the shirts I wonder if they could go smaller like keychains, mugs or pens. I would buy each one of those with some type of logo.
Reward tactics as well as damage dealing.
I currently wait for a more villainous motif to come around. I played mostly villains and so if I buy a shirt it has to have someone evil on it. :)
It rather fizzled after the first three, with a grand total of 1 sold of the last shirt-of-the-month.

Could have been worthwhile actually announcing a new T-Shirt on your front page and on the forums as being available to buy instead of relying on people being forced to check the shop page with constant eagle eyes to see if something new is available.
If anything with a forum thread for the new items, it would have given people a ready made feedback form for that t-shirt about why they bought/why they didn't buy it.
To be 100% honest, I never knew that you had done a 2nd (and more) T-Shirts.
And this is why I keep on hammering on about communication

That is just a massive fail right there.
Infact, it doesn't even stop me from ordering a T-shirt NOW (i went through to the paypal pay page, didn't go any further).
That is something that does need clearing up pronto, especially if the order is no longer valid.
where is this special kickstarter section anyways? i was never aware of that

Kickstarter section It is on the front page of the website, at the bottom of the section list on the left.
I have nothing available to download from there, but if you paid enough, you would have exclusive wallpapers that you can use.
Kickstarter update number 105, the one one month after Anthem, announced the next T-shirt right on schedule and provided the link (which no longer works, the whole thing having failed, as explained above, and the site no longer maintained). Update number 110 once again announced an upcoming T-shirt and gave a pre-view of the art.

I wish I could have afforded the Mogul KS donation.
This sounds perfect!!
"I don't think you understand the gravity of your situation."
I think if anything that this just goes to show how well people read your kickstarter updates.
The titles of them are (if anything) very ambiguous whilst they gave a nice overview, you had to read *every* single word of it just to make sure that there was nothing "extra" sneaked in extra.
I have suggested in the past that you put a table of contents into your kickstarter emails if you are covering several different topics, and yet (no surprise here) it has never been implemented.
And you are surprised that it *FAILED*?
If I get a Newsletter and it is just a wall of text covering several topics and no "quick" summary at the top of the mail, I just bin it.
Especially if it is longwinded.
Hell, in this case, I would even settle for a TL;DR covering the main points. As long as it was CLEAR as to what it was.
I will admit blame and a bit of "quick reading" over the kickstarter mails, but when most of them have been in the same format of "one or two topics, quite long... possibly lore orientated" and no clear *break points* between the different sections, then the writer would also have to shoulder the blame.
In my mind, it also doesn't help that you (for one of the emails) did a title where the *objects* of that title formed the start and end point of the mail, with the T-shirt stuck inbetween.
And to be honest, I skipped one of them entirely because I already liked the COT facebook page and the kickstarter stuff (Which I had backed) wasn't relevant to what I had backed to). So once again, nothing interesting for me in the title of it.
And there was no mention of the T-shirt in the title.
If you don't think the t-shirt is worth mentioning in a headline, or even a Table of contents then you would have to expect people to treat them with the same level of importance.
And that would be zero importance.
Great that they are in there, not so great that it was not CLEARLY mentioned as being there.
And once again, the fact that BACKERS here have gone "there was more than one t-shirt" just goes to show how bad of a job they are laid out.
I have essentially the same response to the Gabby Cabby posts. I have to wade through so much in-character stuff and parse my way through so much clutter that it's actually more trouble than it's worth to read ... so I don't.
Heck, even the 13 days of christmas posts got to be a turn off after a bit. There was just too much "noise" to wade through before reaching the "signal" of the posting.

Hmmmm.
From reading Gangrel and Red's posts above, it seems like perhaps there has been too much effort to make updates and information cute and interesting in an artistic way, when it could have been better to focus on clear and concise.
I think more than a little of that has to do with the very real fact of the stage of development that CoT was in at the time where it was mostly big picture lore writing and some very dry technical pre-production, so not too much specific to report on.
And, in MWM's defense, most games at that stage would only have been hinted at publicly, definitely not giving any specifics.
I know, I know, this is a Kickstarter so it's a bit different, but it also puts communication onus far above what a professional team would normally have to deal with upon a mostly volunteer effort.
So, past is past, live and learn, moving forward.
Since CoT is on the cusp of entering a new stage of development now, maybe now is the time to re-focus on a new set of release dates and clear, concise communication, especially with backers (of which I'm not even one :P).
FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)
I am lobbying for the end of Gabbie the Cabbie posts. The record low read count for the last one speaks loudly in favor.
--------------------------
Interior Map Lead and UI Designer
Although I wouldn't be opposed to the removal of the lore posts, I think that getting a better layout would work wonders overall. And quite possibly re-ignite interest in the updates themselves.
Most recent Elite Dangerous newsletter
If you notice, at the start does a quick start of the *general* idea for the main topic of the week. It also has links to the forums/twitter and facebook page.
It then has a table of contents.
This does wonders for giving out the general feel and ease of use finding stuff in there. They also DO NOT try to sneak information that should be in a more suitable place into the wrong section.
Plus points to them having links to jump directly to the relevant section. But even without them, they still break each section up with a definite marker.
The thing is though, the MAIN topic is at the very start, and the stuff that they deem less important is further down. But even so, it is still *listed* at the start in the table of content so you are, as a reader, aware of it being present.
You have a sneak peak at upcoming content.
You then have community information.
It then has a lore item at the end. This is actually typical for Frontier, as they do a news letter on a regular weekly basis. If they wanted to push out a whole load of lore as the focus, then it wouldn't be at the end, but at the start.
Oh, and dont forget links to the forum/twitter/facebook page/youtube channel at the end as well
But the thing is though, ALL of this is listed at the very start as well.
It makes reading it a breeze, and not a struggle.
Trying to sneak "gameplay" information into a lore article and then expecting the readers to pick up on it is just expecting failure. A person is smart, the community at large is dumb[1]
Is this the best newsletter I have seen out there? Probably not but no others stick to my mind, but even so... it does do a lot of things correctly.
Granted, because this is also more of a "community" mailing list as well, it does have links dotted throughout linking to relevant threads and what not through out.
[1] Painting with a broad brush here, but you cannot expect every member of the community to know everything, so sometimes is just plan easier to write it out in simple terms.

I would suggest separating the two, lore/background/fluff and Actual Game Material/info that needs to be passed on.
Also, need to be a bit more concise on your titles to the posts themselves to avoid people missing things.
Last thing I would suggest, if it's posted ANYWHERE else it is also posted here at the same time...no waiting a day or two before cross posting...like right after to ensure all the info is disseminated evenly and amongst all the methods of communication you use.

Push or Pull? ;)
To be fair with MWM, they have been doing this with their kickstarter announcements quite a bit recently, linking it across from the newsletter to this forum to discuss pretty damn quickly, if not *just before* the actual mail goes out.
And yes, I did suggest that in the past.
There is one exception, and that is with the vast majority of facebook posts wouldn't deserve their own topic. However, if there is something that they deem "major" enough to announce something on facebook, I would at least hope that they would do the same here.
Queue discussions about what merits being "important" enough etc etc.
everything. this eliminates any possibility that something is over looked and ensures all information is out there on all avenues of communication.
things placed on facebook I will never see as I don't have facebook and have no desire to get it. I am sure there are people following on facebook that don't come here...etc etc

And almost every time, even that isn't enough of an incentive for me to go look at facebook. As far as I'm concerned, facebook = memory hole.

Oh agreed about the facebook thing. Even though I follow the CoT facebook page, I rarely if ever visit it.
The same for the CoX page when it was up.
However, if there was a "share this page/like this image/do this app thing" to get a shiney I *might* just well do it. And infact I *did* do the app thing for City of Heroes to get that aura code (i forget which it was). And that was also because they mentioned it on the forums that this promotion was running.
But the ironic thing was that a lot of "hardcore" players (or at least the most vocal on the forums) complained about it, and it was later given to everyone.
The thing was, this was a method of advertising.
And the players who complained didn't realise this, and then complained about the lack of advertising and how little their "non gaming friends" had heard about it.
But this at least helped that circle grow a little bit larger. Hell, ironically through this sharing alone, I discovered that a few of my friends also played CoX, and I never knew about it; granted I hadn't really spoken to them about computer games for a while (since I left uni), but we still stayed in touch, and met up every so often.
If anything, it helps spread the message of the game towards a larger circle of people. There are a number of things that I have picked up from other people, competitions that I didn't know about, tidbits of news/what not from facebook that I wouldn't have necessarily heard first (or even 2nd or 3rd hand) if it wasn't for the reach that it can have.
But as always, it has to be done in a sensible fashion.
But going back to the topic though, IF anything "ground breaking" was ever mentioned on facebook, initiated by MWM/developer as an OP, then I would hope to high heaven that they would also post it here.
If not, once again, they fail at communication.
Side note: The City of Titans facebook page is actually a public page, so you don't need a facebook account to view it. So there is that, if that helps out.
Facebook not an original announcement platform, unless the announcement is somehow tied from beginning to end in Facebook, which is both rare and usually minor. THIS is where we announce stuff, on our site. We LINK to stuff on facebook. It, like our other social media platforms, is a way of alerting people - it's used to propagate what we put here. In fact, the message with the link to the latest update is copy pasted from the CoT page to the twitter. I know, because I'm the one who does it :). I decided there was really no call to dream up a more elaborate one for the FB page and it makes posting quicker.
The only tricky bit to coordinate is the KS. Access to it is extremely restricted because it is linked to the fund account. So, I post it here and put the links everywhere, but Cabbit or Nate needs to find time to put it on the KS later. And when it goes up on the KS, it automatically emails everyone who donated, which I suspect is Gangrel's 'newsletter'. We don't have a newsletter. The KS automated one is still sufficient from our needs and we've got enough stuff to try and code from the bottom up. It's one of those things we'll surely have later, but isn't practical to devote dev time to now.

I like the Gabby Cabbie! He has good flavor.
On the other hand, I agree that he's not a good vector for disseminating information.

That seems perfectly reasonable to me. Glad to hear that this is the main site for any information.
Was that /e facepalm? I recall that a player had to Like the CoX Facebook page to get an unlock code, at least at first. Luckily I have a daughter, so I didn't have to log on to FB myself. :-)
Spurn all ye kindle.
I forget which it was... but the basic premise of using facebook as an advertising platform was the main reason behind the scheme, and not primarily a "how do we get codes to the player base" solution.
Although saying that I had no problems decoding the images when they had codes reversed/inverted/curved up and around embedded for players to get free costume codes.
I did quite a few of them not just for myself, but also for my friends as well.
Yeah, we got quite a few rather quickly... and some quite a few hours later (as in 12-18 hours later, there were still codes not used).
But that was definitely a "first come, first served" race. And it didn't actually spread the word of the game. All you had to do was follow them on twitter for something.
Side note: I hope you let your daughter play on the account that had the code applied to it. Would have been a bit unfair if she had her own account and no emote on it.
Side note 2: I know of enough other people who actually made a facebook page for their main character for this reason alone. They actually use the profile now quite a bit, partly in character, but also to sign up for player organised Real Life meet ups.
Its funny what "gotta have it all" mentality does to people.
To be fair, the t-shirt info was in an Art- Update, and that fits the topic. But I have overlooked it too. Between the awesome pictures of the mogul bases and the happy news of Petalstorms baby, it was simply overshadowed. If it ever gets back, I will certainly buy some too.
As for the Cabbie, I enjoyed reading his stories a lot. But I can see why he might be not as easy to read. Other Lore- Updates have a plot and tension, while he just talks about the city.
Yeah. Gabby's entire purpose was to give a taste of how the city feels. Just a taste (and a taste peppered with his "charm". See what I did there? Peppered....). It was never intended to be the defining Titan City encyclopedia.

What would make it awesome is if you made like a cab drive demo in a city with a NPC Gabbie that turns around and talks (using text bubbles) and shows you around
You don't even have to make a PC toon. You could just use a camera box in the back seat that can look left and right.
This would be a good way of allowing Gabby to evolve and show both the game development/tech advances as well as the story/lore!

IMHO we need stuff from more points of view than just a cabbie. The concept of "a view from the gallery" is a good one, but there's more than one guy in the gallery.
And I think Gangrel is 100% right that if an update post has multiple items in it, it needs an executive summary and table of contents up front.
