The GENIUS of CoH power colors

Two things I LOVED about the CoH costume creator were that:

a) you got at least two colors (sometimes more? I can't remember) for each power--usually a dominant color and then an "accent" color--and

b) you even got a choice whether the animation was light or dark--AND YOU COULD MIX THEM!

This was GENIUS, and light-years better than the one-color choice that Champions and DCUO give. These two things really allowed you to dial in your concept and make truly unique looks for your powers.

This may seem like a small point, but the single-color choice in Champions and DCUO just felt... so disappointing after CoH, and I never saw anywhere near the rich variety of power looks in either of those games as in CoH.

For example, bright orange fire with a dark blood-red accent. Or dark black fire with a eerie green light accent. Talk about sexy for a demonic/undead toon.

Please at least two color choices and dark or light for powers if U4 can possibly handle it. PLEASE :)!!! Those other games were really a step backwards from what CoH had in that department.

Well, I agree CoH had more

Well, I agree CoH had more flexibility in color tinting than CO, but if I recall correctly, when CO launched, you couldn't change the tint of your powers in CoH, yet.

That's true! I had forgotten about back when if you wanted Energy Melee, you had to sport the Pink Pom Poms of Doom with pride--no matter how badly they clashed with your other powers.

Those were the old days, the bad days, the all-or-nothing days! So what your purse doesn't match your shoes--suck it up and fight evil while clashing!

Ok, so, how about, if not at launch, let's at least have these features eventually :)

I loved the 2-tone feature

I loved the 2-tone feature also, though I always found the selection and combination a bit wonky. Still good, but the palette choices and the way in which the colours combined never seemed intuitive to me. But maybe that was just me.

One thing I always wanted was for the default colour settings to be the ones selected when I first went into the custom colours screen, instead of some random other set of colours. Very often, I wanted to just slightly tweak the defaults, not start from scratch each time. In fact, perhaps due to my inability to grasp the subtleties of colour assignment, for ice armour I was never able to reproduce or even get close to the original colours, so any custom attempt on my part never looked quite as appropriately translucent as the original.

I seem to remember a similar conversation on the CoH forums.
Someone said the default colors of powers were, in some cases, actually three colors instead of two and that was why you couldn't get the same nuanced look.
I think it was most evident in the energy and electricity blast sets.

Yeah, and CoT has the opportunity to bake it in rather than try to reverse engineer it. That's pretty exciting.

Speaking of "baked in", how

Speaking of "baked in", how could I have not mentioned the fire sets!
The reds, oranges and yellows.
I don't think I ever tinted any of those powers because it never looked as good as the native coloring.

Ah, that's interesting. That would explain it!

fire control actually looked pretty decent with a red/green combination and Empathy looks fairly good with a green/red combination (ie reverse the Fire control set colours). It was how I had my fire/emp set up

I can sort of picture that. I spite of their popularity (or maybe because of it, I can't remember LOL) I never made a fire controller.
I played around with most of them, at one time or another, but the only ones I took to 50 were a grav/kin and an ice/storm.

Fire/Emps were (at least on

Fire/Emps were (at least on my server) fairly under represented. I think that is because although Fire Control was very good in a team environment; when teamed with Empathy, it was a very slow going power set overall solo. And because it was "healing" it was also frowned upon because although healing was *useful* it was also the "last ditch" for when defensives buffs failed.

It was my first 50, and the one that I was most proud of (next to my Fire/Psi dom, who took the longest for me to get to 50... but that was through general boredom of the game when Villains came out, and how confusing I found I found the layout for the first zone.... )

I'll agree with the idea that you couldn't reproduce some of the "baked in" CoH powerset color schemes with Power Customization. I also agree sets like Fire Control had a pretty nice default color look to it. But I remember there would be times where I'd recolor every single Fire Control power for the sake of having them match the OTHER powerset I was using.

For example I had a Fire/Rad Controller which I always (from the very beginning of the game) wanted to be completely "fire oriented" with matching colors. The problem of course is that to have the Rad part I had to accept the default green colors. Once Power Customization finally happened I was able to recolor all the powers from both the Fire and Rad powersets to the same red/orange scheme so that finally all of the powers could look "flame" based. To do that I had to use a "fire" color combo that was non-default regardless if I liked it or not.

I hope that CoT allows for power coloring that won't restrict us from being able to use the default color scheme from one powerset to color another powerset the exact same way.

It might of been old, but COH was able to do a lot of things other games just haven't done.. which added soo much to the game on such a basic level :D

COH was just so awesome. I had a weather/elec Defender called Cyclone (hence my name) and when the tinting came into play I could tint my powers. A little yellowish blue into my Zap Grey into my Hurricane, and darker grey into my Thunder Clap as to make the cloud darker. We need tinting in COT.

Changing the colors made me

Changing the colors made me soo happy. I refused to use electric powers originally because they were red of all things. RED! can you believe it?! that was a freeking abomination! Once I could turn them white or blue (or both) I started playing an electric melee toon called Thunder Knight (can't remember if he was a scrapper or tank)

My favorite color change was

My favorite color change was when I had a villain with the water blast power set, and I changed the color of the whole set to dark red, accented by a medium red. I defined him as controlling blood as a weapon. The whirlpool was especially horrific when thought of in that manner.

I imagine I wasn't the only one who did that.

After the color change option

After the color change option was put in place, my Fire/Fire Dominator had a different color powerset for every costume. The default yellow-orange, light blue with dark blue accents, bright pink with red accents, and black on grey for more "formal" occasions.

Yeah we had "Power Customization" for roughly 3 years before the game was shut down. Hopefully CoT will allow for even more customization freedom.

So you missed it by about 6 months give or take - Mission Architect was Issue 14 and Power Customization was Issue 16.

Anyway here's hoping your wait will be worth it for CoT. :)

loved it when they opened up

loved it when they opened up the coloring of powers...and they fought so hard to say it couldn't be done originally, IIRC. my hope is that CoT has something similar as well, except take it a bit further. say three colors: primary, secondary and tertiary (would fit in well with powers P, S and T) but a larger pallet to draw upon. it can be a set amount but I would hope they open it up to about double the amount of color choices we had in CoH....to include white and black. the ideal situation for me would be 3 colors and a completely open color wheel. maaannn....the choices!

It couldn't be done

It couldn't be done originally. The supported low-end video cards didn't have enough RAM. And even later, they could only colorize powers that had effects that were basically monochrome.

The engine was held together with spit and bailing wire.

Has anyone seen my mind? It was right here...

I had a character called Prism and his outfit was of course rainbow with a red head and using the blend several times all the way to the purple on the boots. I believe he had energy electrical powers and I used a different color of the rainbow for each power. He wasn't my favorite fighting hero but his look was really cool. He also had the purple energy held shield.

Ahh, I remember the colour

Ahh, I remember the colour changes :D

I used that old "spike" or "thorn" power (completely have forgotten its name, didn't play CoH that much) and made them black, then put them on a jester character and called her "Impy" :D I dunno why but it was just so awesome that you could recolour your powers like that.

Plauge and death... Let that come
