I mentioned some points about coloring in Dee Dee's thread so I thought I'd post some examples here. This approach is based on Photoshop but most packages have some equivalent. The first thing is a greyscale image with good value range--particularly midrange values. If it's too high contrast, this method won't really get good results.

Next I apply an adjustment layer. These are basically filters, effects, gradients, etc. that are coupled with a layer mask. The specific one I start with is a gradient map. What this does is exchange the gradient values present in the image (from dark to light) and replaces those with the gradient that you specify. Which in this case is just me guessing what the skin tones should be.

The virtue of working this way is that you can tweak the effect as much as you like without changing the greyscale layer underneath. Furthermore, you control where the effect is applied. Black in the layer mask blocks the application of the effect and white lets in in. After the initial gradient map, I just add other filters to tweak the color and saturation.

So basically, nothing in this painting is actually painted in the normal way except the greyscale layer underneath. The layers allow you to edit things non-destructively. You're just painting light and dark on the layer masks in order to control how the effects are applied. This is really useful if you need to change the overall color scheme of a picture for some reason or you're not sure what you want to begin with. After you're sure that you like a certain color scheme, you can then flatten it and paint directly on the image in order to refine things as needed.
You make it look so easy. I'm blown away with all of this.

The one I used for this pic is this:

From left to right you have the basic print of the brush, some strokes done at 100% flow, and then some strokes done at 4% flow. If you want really naturalistic looking hair, go with a low flow and gradually build the hair up. This character has a severe bob, so after laying down a lot of texture I went back in and trimmed the edges with a hard eraser.

Would you possibly take commissions after the 3D printer is available?
I'm hoping to offer some sort of commissions after the printer is up and running but I have a lot of technical issues to address before I can assess. I'm new to 3d printing so I have to figure out what kind of filament to use, what kind of settings for my printer, whether or not I need to print a figurine like that in sections, etc. I'm expecting to hit a (hopefully not steep) learning curve once I have the machine in hand. But I'll be posting updates once I've started, which I hope will be soon.

Hi guys,
This is a print project I'm starting. I want to do little busts of characters with faces that you can swap out. So each bust would have maybe 5 different expressions that you could insert based on your mood. I also wanted to do something more stylized than my usual approach. So I'm doing a sculpt of Juri Han from the Street Fighter games with more anime style facial proportions.

Here is an update on my Juri Han figurine. Sculpting hair is a real pain in the ass, but I hope to keep improving with projects like this.

Here is another update. The costume is modeled. The next step is to do a bunch of facial expressions and model a stand for the statuette. I might do a color render too just as a guide for painting the print down the road.

How large is that model going to be?
I haven't really decided. I might print it at different sizes just to see how well the machine can do small detail. Also I might put a slot or something in the base to hold something like a Wacom pen. My guess is that it will be 5 or 6 inches tall. I still don't have the printer but I'm hoping to get it within a couple weeks.

Can't say I care for the tongue-out expression myself, probably because I never saw the appeal/humor of sticking one's tongue out. The left one kind of has a Harley Quinn appearance to it, which is naturally just adorable. Actually, the right one kinda does too.
I didn't notice at first, but once you got the color on there it started weirding me out. There are no arms. Otherwise really cool.

I just stumbled over this thread and wanted to add my appreciation for your artwork and your recent progress with the 3D printing examples. :)
I especially wanted to mention the coolness of your printed Zaxa figurine since she is "ballpark similar" looks-wise to the mental image I have of one of my original main characters from CoH. If you ever get to the point where you might be able to do commissions for printed figures like this you probably wouldn't have to change this Zaxa figure all that much in order to get a good likeness of my old CoH character.

Thanks! I will try to offer at least a handful of printed figure custom commissions in the future (like in a couple months). At the moment I'm still learning how to use the printer and starting to set up a workspace for finishing prints (sanding, priming, airbrushing, etc.). I don't mind if you submit it, but it's not my design. Juri Han is a character from Capcom's Street Fighter games. This costume is from Street Fighter 4. I tweaked it a little to fit on the proportions of my figure, but I didn't design anything and the credit belongs to Capcom.

The thing I really like about this costume item is that it looks very compatible with wings. There weren't really too many costume items back in CoH that looked like they would actually physically "work" with a person who had wings so I'm hoping something like this top would be something the Devs would add to the game.

I need to get a couple more of these projects under my belt before I take any commissions. I still have some issues to resolve with regard to printing, and then prepping and painting the print remains a big hurdle. I learned a lot from this one, so I hope to have a workflow down fairly soon. Maybe a couple months.

I'm in the process of printing out my Juri Han statuette. The heads are printed separately and attach to the torso via armature wire, so you can tilt and turn the head:

There's a game called Soulcalibur VI that's just as, if not more, lewd than that. It's the kind of game where just taking in-game screenshots of it unaltered can get you in trouble. That game is T for Teen.
You can stretch this stuff pretty far...
A google image search gave no results with characters with neither top nor undies....
There's some tolerance for lewd but nothing that wouldn't break local indecent exposure laws :p
