People got names and so forth generic-ed on CoX because they were suggestive. Okay _I_ had that happen to me, there I said it. Would it be at all possible to have a server or instance or something that was "adults only" in some way, like you can't access it unless you have a credit card or something?
I ask this because I had an idea last night for a Super Group called The Exploitables, which would be like the Expendables only instead of over-the-hill action heroes it would be populated by toons designed to resemble (in a non-copyright-infringing way) characters like Shaft, Dolemite, anyone from Kung-Fu movies, or Russ Meyer movies (i.e. like something out of "Faster, Pussycat, KILL! KILL!" etc). I'm sure a lot of this wouldn't fly in the general population of the game, so if it could be allowed at all, how would that work?

There have been suggestions for a "mature server" on both this CoT forum and the old CoH forums. The general consensus is usually that it would be a bad idea.
On one hand it would be nice to be able to RP more "adult" themes and situations. But not only would you be splitting up the playerbase between mature and non-mature servers it would likely force the Devs into maintaining two separate baselines of code (for the name filtering if nothing else). Also there would inevitably have to be stronger GM policing to make sure minors weren't caught doing "naughty" things on the mature server. All it all it would be a maintenance nightmare that would likely impact everyone's enjoyment - far more cons than pros.

If I understand this correctly, you want a server where you would not get banned for inappropriate names?
As far as I know, we are not going to get a rigid server structure like City of Heroes had, more something like one big server, that will open up instances of the map as needed when it gets to crowded to handle. That could make your idea a bit difficult to do...
Although I think it could be funny and would visit that server from time to time.
Don't get me wrong: If CoT actually decided that having a "mature" server was worth the extra trouble involved I would probably play on it exclusively. There are just simply too many reasons why having such a server wouldn't be worth that extra effort.

When the person with the @$$-wiggling genie animation in their sig tells me this, I can't determine on my own if it's for irony or serious. I'm assuming serious for now.
In any event, it was just a passing thought.

Isn't the plan for there to be just one server?
To spare you the possibility of a False Positive ... I was being serious, not ironic.
As for my sig GIF ... I've been using her almost continuously for almost 20 years now, ever since I first "met" her, and in all that time she hasn't complained to me one bit. I have, however, had other people tell me that she's had a somewhat ... hypnotic effect @.@ ... on them after reading any (and every?) one of my posts.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with having redheads in the forums who just like to dance. Do you? {blink blink}

I would pass on a mature server, if there was such a thing. I could see it getting rapidly out of hand...

Yeah that's the current plan and that plan probably makes the idea of having a second official "mature" server even harder to justify. If the game were to have two main servers (one mature, one not) you could legitimately ask, "Is CoT a Teen rated game with a secondary Mature rated server or is it a Mature rated game with a secondary Teen server? Which one is the REAL game?"
If CoT was going to launch with the traditional multi-server approach it might have been easier to sneak in a Mature rated server as one of many options. As a single mega-server game it just doesn't seem feasible to divide it along ratings lines like that.

Yeah the plan is to have one massive super server system where each zone on it's own server and you seamlessly transfer over without notice. So there no isolation between servers. So a Mature content server wouldn't be possible.
There also how can you make sure you are restricting those going on the server? To get an account anyway you have to pay for the game so using the credit card wall won't work.
Going to have to be what every other game with a T rating does. It's up to the players to monitor the Supergroup that's mature to make sure the members are adults. Given the idea is to have both Player Homes and Group Bases there will be plenty of Mature RP places. Still talk of trying to have it so you can join more then one super group at a time too.
So Mature players just going to have to behave themselves outdoors like anywhere else.
Yeah incase it isn't clear my vote is no.

I'd bet if there was a choice between mature and teen the mature would fill faster. Not to mention, the rating of teen still puts people on edge.
For one, the rating only has to do with the game content, not the player made comments/characters/concepts. So any crappy genericing of a players character is likely to be due to an uptight dev than anything else.
agreed, if there was a choice I believe there would be more people on the "mature" server...the reason being that a good many will believe it gives them the right to be total scmucks, cursing/being rude/etc, while attempting to use..."but this is a mature server!" to hide behind.
the problem I see with a "mature" server is what does that actually mean. obviously it means that there will be more mature subject matter, as far as character bios are concerned...but does it also allow for people the curse up a storm in general chat? does is allow for harassment in game? where is the line between "mature" and "immature"?
no, I think the best recourse to avoid all the dramarama and headaches that could, and would occur, is to just run with the same rating as most MMO's out there. this will appeal to a larger audience in the grand scheme. plus, part of the charm of CoH was the fact that it was a game an entire family could play together, regardless of age. that is something really hope to see happen again here with CoT.
just my opinion on the matter though. :)

Don't want it
wouldn't use it
wouldn't let my kids use it
I'd still pay to play the game because it wouldn't effect me much
Except for one thing
If there were an adult server, it might draw away some of the more negative people, making the server I would use a lot nicer.

I probably wouldn't use it much, mainly because a server labeled the 'Mature Server' would be far too likely to draw immature people who would see it as justification for being jerks.
Game wise it wouldn't affect much anyway. Some graphic settings perhaps, more blood, more gore. One or two stories be more mature content, rape for example. That said that would draw resources from the more family friendly game. Art would be needed to make skins, graphics, and props for the mature settings. Story Writers would spend time writing mature stories.
That leads to the Blueside vs Redside issue. Blueside in City of Heroes got more members so more resources were sent there. Very little new content appeared Redside. Same will happen here. New content would be for the T for Teen rating.
Now thinking of this got me wondering if there could be a Mature Stories in the Player Made content. RPers going to Rp mature content no matter the setting, using private chats, Tells, Bases, and player housing. So if we could have access to Mature/adult items for the Player houses and bases, even a Mature setting on the Player made stories.
The problem again would be restricting the Mature content to just the 18+ group. We also dealing with world wide restrictions. What is rate T for Teens here in the US might not be T elsewhere. Would Items you buy (example BDSM furniture to recreate the red room from 50 shades) count as Mature furniture and would such items being for sale force the game into the Mature ratings? Player made content normally not included in ratings, but would be monitored in order to keep it in bounds. If players could make custom furniture would we be able to buy them on the store?

I do not think Radiac had something like mature story-lines featuring questionable things like sex and rape in mind. Nor ERP or something like that.
As far as I understand he just likes funny character concepts that occasionally include jokes a little below the waistline and wanted a place where he would be allowed to do that.
This does not seem to be possible and that is fine too. Except maybe if it becomes possible to host a private server, but that seems a bit much effort just for a few laughs.
I'm sure Radiac wasn't thinking along those lines. But others will and do.
Me I always try to play the Devil's advocate and look at as many angles as I can think of. The first thing that comes to mind with Mature content in game is graphics, second is darker stories involving more details then you find in a T for teen game. Third is Nudity.
So one has to ask themselves what would be the benefits of having a Mature Server vs a Teen Server. For the superhero genre we doing graphic valance is rare even with ones with guns involved you don't often see the impact results. A body falling and blood spatter at most. It of course turned up or down depending on the Artist and script.
Next would be stories. Rape and it's impact is also a subject that sometimes hinted at but not out front. The Killing Joke for example may or maynot have involved the Joker violating Barbara Gordon. Generally speaking for the Superhero Genre the stories themselves are more for Teens and young adults. Lots of action lots of drama but when it comes to Mature content not often. It happens yes just rare.
Nudity... well face it comic artist are known for having more T & A then is physically possible. Then again all out naked bodies you have to get an Adult comic and the quality of stories there are just enough to get to the physical parts.
So the question what would be the benefit of a Mature Setting for this type of game? To me not enough even a separate server. The Rewards are not high enough for the Effort.

CoT is an MMO. Just like CoH, it's going to draw what you all consider immature players.

In that case, it sounds to me like what we really need for that is an immature server. :-)
Spurn all ye kindle.
The more I think about it the more I like the idea
we don't have to provide different content
just no policing
let the crazy people name their characters fart bag if they want
let them curse and harass each other
While we calmly continue playing the game as God intended on the teen server
That could be the answer to the MMO Griefers thread
Banish them to the "mature" server.

I'm with Brand X. Won't matter how many servers there going to be jerks on all of them. So the ones that would log into the normal server would be looking to cause trouble instead of the bunch that cause it just by nature.
Besides who says those Immature types going to be Mature in age? A 15 yearold can be as insulting, rude, and sexest jerk as a 25 yearold. Heck more often they are worst. Now excuse me while I get a beer to wash out the memories of Middle and High school bullies.

Not my call ultimately, but if it came up for a vote I would be against it for the fact that we would probably lose our T rating just for having such a thing be accessible. Restricting access to "mature" content online is pretty much laughable. Also, Rotten is completely right. One of the reasons CoH had such a good, relatively sane community was the fact that a majority were over the age of 25. Some of the dumbest crap I've seen online has come from teens. That counterbalances the fact that some of the dumbest crap I've seen IRL has come from people over 30 though. :/

There were 15 years olds and younger on Union that displayed behaviour far more mature than some of the adults there...
In response to the OP, I would guess that whilst some character names might be fun, there will be others that might cause offence no matter what your age. And, these days, we are all aware, sadly, of how seriously some people can take offence. Policing names for possible religious, moral, political, social or other possible offence would be a nightmare, and the enforcement of the consequent censorship might offend anyone left who hadn't been offended by the names in the first place! Aside from that, there is the inevitable and inescapable spectre of copyright, which will never be exorcised by even the most sophisticated of grown-up behaviour.
We'll get by with some creative thought - there was plenty of that in the CoX community, after all, and I can't imagine CoT eliminating any of that.
Running's not a plan!
Running's what you do when a plan fails!
Which goes back to what I said in the Griefer thread. Don't monitor the stupid names. I'm more offended by the name "XxXIAmHealerXxX" than I am "*somehategroup* Supreme Woman"
And what the players do does not effect the rating.
The only real reason I would like a Mature rated server for a game like this is that I sometimes like to think, in a perfect world, there are enough sensible people out there who would actually be "mature" enough to be able to handle adult themes and situations in a manner that wouldn't require constant political correctness or GM policing.
But then I come back to reality and realize there will probably never be a situation where that will happen, especially in a technically public online setting where you could have more than 5 or 10 people in any one place at any one time. As Brand X said MMOs will always draw in enough "immature" players who would abuse/exploit the freedom they'd be given in that situation.
I'm guessing the only way this would work is if (like RottenLuck said) we were allowed to maintain personal private game servers. With that any subset group of players could live by any set of "house rules" they wanted without affecting anyone else. Of course at that point you don't really have a true all-inclusive MMO anymore but more of a weird hybrid "computerized PnP" situation.

If you're REALLY that desperate to have a "mature" server, you'll have to set it up yourself.
Good luck with that.

No matter how innocently it began, six months after a "mature" server came online it would be overrun with vampire clans dedicated to erotic roleplay in public chat channels featuring whips, chains, and similar "toys".
Such is the modern world we live in.

The trick with getting away with "mature" stuff on a non-mature rated server is to keep that stuff out of the public limelight. As long as you don't dump your nauseating ERP on public chat channels and keep your naughty emotes/costumes under wraps in public areas you can really do almost anything you want with like-minded consenting people.
The only real problem Radiac had with his OP here was that he wanted questionable character names where anyone could publically see them. That's just not going to fly.

Seeing as how you can get away with that in non mature books and just a matter of detail, not to mention a games rating does not factor in anything players may or may not write into a public channel.
If it did, a lot more MMOs would be closed down by now.

Yeah....this won't achieve the desired effect that you want at all. All a ''Mature'' server really does is draw immature idiotic kids/teenagers/adults that claim that they are mature but really are not.
Trust me I have played FPS games with servers like that. All it does is draw a bunch of morons that think that they have free reign to be assholes to each other and to players that actually want to play the game....

And then there's Second Life, where there was a thriving trade in phalluses, and you could get attacked by a mess of them. Yes, "mature" generally isn't. If you want a server where people tend to actually act mature, instead of just horny teenager, then you're looking for the RP server.
