mmo Authenticator

can it be done? with so many people super invested, or will be as perhaps their main hobby, it might be a good choice. even if it costs quite a bit to fire up.

see other stuff on the topic: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/938738-/63915243?page=1

As long as it's part of the game and not some second hand program.

Can you clarify this please... do you mean that the CoT developers should work on their own authenticator... and not use something that (for example) Google have developed used?

The thing with the authenticator is that if it is part of the game, you *will not* be able to set it up or remove it unless you are actually running the game...

For me to set up the authenticator for Wildstar, I have to enter in a long code into the application (Winauth for PC, google authenticator for my phone), which is generated on the Carbine account page, and then enter in a confirmation code that the application generates to say "yep, you entered it correctly".

For me to remove my authenticator from Wildstar, I *HAVE* to enter in a code from it, just to confirm that it is indeed me requesting this change on it.

What if I am unable to get onto my computer? How would this work with several computers/accounts? I say the several computers/accounts is because each "application" as it were (or at least each authenticator) is considered "unique".

Oh and without the creation code, I cannot set up another device. So if you swap computers you are unable to generate the authentication code needed to be able to set up another PC.

Which is annoying if you are like me, and you ahve 2 PC's that you use...

Or if you just buy a new PC and want to install the game onto it (or you have to reformat the PC for whatever reason).

easy. get the keychain one.

easy. get the keychain one. the button battery will last years. if not a decade in a cool, dry place. they offer good protection, for less than 10 bucks, and make the mwm some money.

Those (can) have a direct cost for the makers of the game, as they are the ones to source it, and if the cost is too high people will not buy them.

Which is why I am glad that there are PC/smartphone equivalents. I actually have my wildstar authenticator on a USB stick as well as 2 separate smartphones (hey, I am a tech head). This cost me nothing in setup fee's.

I do have 3 "keyfob" authenticators for other MMO's though (SWTOR, Blizzard and FF14). the pile is getting quite impressive to be honest.

Can I please have one that I can run from a PC, carry on a USB-stick, or the like? I do not own (or want) a 'smart-phone'.

If they use google

If they use google authenticator, then you can use Winauth. It is what I use for Guild Wars 2/Wildstar.

Winauth also supports Battle.net, microsofts 2 factor and Trions/Rift 2 factor authentication.

It is also able to run from a usb stick (once you put the xml file in the same directory as the main executable). Oh and you can password protect it.. or if you are really only going to use it on just one computer, lock it to that specific user.

Don't have a smart phone and didn't get WS's authenticator because to run it I was told I needed to run another program. Something akin to Aeria Game's authenticator which was built into the game would be much better.

Not having a smartphone I can understand. Strange, but I understand it.

Can you post some images for this please, because I am unable to find any images as to what it looks like (googling for Aeria Games authenticator doesn't help me, as all I find is a request from 2 years back to use *any* form of extra authentication to do it).

The way in which you are describing it is that it makes me feel that the code you should type in is generated by the game itself and that there is nothing *unique* about the install to say "Yep, this is the sequence that you need to input, because it belongs to X person and it is being used at Y time" and that it isn't someone else logging in from a similar/Same IP as you using your credentials and basically stealing your account.

If you gave me your login details for the Aeria games, would I be able to log in at my location (assuming no IP blocking for strange IP's) with the minimal of fuss?

Also, with those details, would I be able to change details to your account *easily*/remove the authenticator/protection even if I don't have the game installed?

If the answer is yes... then that has defeated the whole reason for having an authenticator of *any type* on the game.

*edit* I would like to add that I recently (as in the past few days) discovered that my password manager has a plugin available which can generate the Timed One Time Passwords, and that it is compatible with the Google authenticator. Not sure if it can deal with others... or if they have their own plugins, but for now... I know that I am not having to run additional software

We will have other options as well. I just mentioned the smartphone app in lieu of the key fob.
