tanker utility powers, rare as they are... suggestions?

so, with many tankers sets really just different colored flavors, or not far from it, some sets were described by that ONE utillty power.

what did you have in mind?

a almost usless but pretty one?
(a pet with tons of avatar choices, or even customizable, alas about as powerdul as a standard grey goon)

not flashy, but maybe not always useful?
(reduce control/hold effects,or break them clicky on a timer?)

A power to protect another

A power to protect another player, like Captain America diving in front of someone with his shield.

An inverted PBAoE knockback, so you suck a bunch of enemies into you instead of away from you.

The first and the last one seem a bit too "twitch" orientated for most of the people in this player base, if anything because they are "reactive" abilities.

Unless of course you are setting them up as "passive" abilities (like Cover in the Final Fantasy games), where you stand a chance of taking the blow for another person (and quite possibly then having that attack miss/get soaked)

while the game was stated in the kickstarter to not be full on twitch, they have also stated there will be , ah, MORE "movement". good words to avoid saying directly more active. really it looks like auto aim with some aspects of percentages thrown in. it will kick in, but that's about it. hiding behind a wall after someone clicked a auto attack power will probably not hit. you didn't have to aim it, alas then it is not a twitch game. all but in name. but aiming is a big thing to some.

this means a more realistic game. no more hitting backspace and getting a auto hit in. even clothes and armor will have collision detection. people WILL be taking cover in this game.

when this game launches, i fully expect the number one rage topic to be "just how is this game not twitch? the kickstarter said non-twitch". it will not be twitch. just barely not so. surprise!

Twitch is based on the

Twitch is based on the concept of player speed for timing and reaction required for a given effect. Manual aiming, movement to dodge including: click (or double-tap) dodging, click to block - and all things like this are not being planned for the game.

We have some ideas for more combat mobility, they require testing to see which implementation works best. Combat mobility does not necessarily equate to reaction-timing to achieve a desired effect. Though movement to avoid an attack (particularly location based or pbaoe for example) effects could be avoided is possible, it's not something in general encounters that will be a requirement - as in if you don't avoid this you'll be dead attack - that would be for special cases (if at all nothing concrete on that front yet, just not out of the question either).

Taking cover is something we can do, and may be possible to break ranged combat. Consider that essentially, everything follows the tab-targeting method, targets (including players) will be locked, the moment an attack can strike when the target is sufficiently uncovered, the hit-roll system takes over.

Some other close-to-twitch play will be charging and channeling powers; essentially holding down a power icon prior to the attack firing off for a greater or different effect, or holding down the power icon while the power is active for a greater or different effect.

holy trinity= healer, tank, dps.

at least these people understand how stale that concept is. but there will be people out there that want to eat a sandwich with both hands while their standing still toon does it all. may i recommend having a robust mastermind class at launch? the tanks will have options to play with. play will not be a big deal with a hp buffer. they will adjust slow. not so for other classes methinks.

will people fire a slow moving missle, at distance, and really expect it to image glitch and then auto hit through a wall as in coh? or hit a zoning target, only to expect the target to take the damage as soon as they enter the other side? "i cannot stand still and do my thing" be ready for that.

perhaps calling it a new name... ah.... lol..... "dynamic non-twitch". yeah... that will work. i am a genius.

In regards to how "Twitchy" CoT should be (obviously this is my personal opinion) I have stated many times in other threads how BAD this can be if you don't have a fast or stable Internet connection. Im playing FFXIV and in a certain End Game Trial there is a boss that does a long beam attack that will KB you off the map resulting in instant death with NO CHANCE of being rezzed (unless an special Limit Breaker is used by the Healer once it has reached 3x Limit Breaks). There is a small window to get out of this area and often visually my character is out of the AoE but I still get hit and Insta-Killed. I generally have a ~6 Mbps download and 0.7 Mbps upload speed. I live in Australia.

If such mechanics are used the game will need to advise the MINIMUM Internet speeds/ping/etc that a player needs to have to avoid "Lag Death".

As an idea for a Ultility power, similar to a post above where I can protect my teammate this can work as a Click when for the next X seconds my targeted teammate gets +Protection as long as they remain within Melee Range of me.

or by picking a a mob the mob disappears after a time. perhaps it offers only a small percentage via defense (not a damage reduction). perhaps attacks are reduced in strength, or made impossible to use while holding the npc. grabbing a hot girl to use as a shield, she could kick her legs and scream to be saved.......

I think our signature Hero Athena may have a problem with your assumption that girls need to be saved and can only scream and kick their legs.
In fact Athena may scream in rage as she kicks you into the pavement :)

but you are right. it is wrong to think of all girls this way. i dont want to pick a girl up like that if she refuses to shave her legs. let's face it, the engine will be able to define alot of detail!

Don't forget the animation will have no connection to the "Powerset".
So in regards to the "use enemies as shields" it would probably be a temporary "Barrier" ability that provides a 90/180/360 degree wall of "something". That something could be a brick wall, forcefield, hedge, bodies, bubblegum, etc.

I think each set, Tanks as

I think each set, Tanks as well as everyone else, should have one thing nobody else does. Keep that unique feel. Sure, there's more than one way to knock people down. Ice guy has Ice Slick. Strong Guy might have Stomp. Whatever. Even if the damage and effect was exactly the same having different FX makes it all good for me.

I would like to see some of the classic bits like throwing stuff to intercept other stuff but I understand that the tech might limit us. I don't want any two sets to feel so similar that people say 'eh, it's all the same'

I remember when Star Wars was cool...a long, long time ago...
