Just saw a trailer for the subject-named movie. Rocket Raccoon looks to be a badass. Seeoahtlahmakaskay will be pleased, I think.

I'll confess I knew practically nothing of this comic book title before I first heard about the movie being made.
I'm sure we'll go see it when it comes out but since I'll be coming at it from a complete noob point of view I won't suffer any of the typical nerd-rage when all the enlightened people tell us the movie "got it all wrong and messed everything up". ;)

I'm with you Lothic.

All I know is there's a guy with an element gun, a gun raccoon, and a tree that can only speak one line. If they use that incarnation anyway, I think the team members shuffle around. :p
Well we got the Raccoon and the Tree!

I just wish they'd let Peter Quill be more Han Solo/Malcome Reynolds.... maybe he will be in the actual flick.. but in the trailer he just seems a little too self absorbed.. like they're going to make him a reluctant hero, instead of a defiant one.
also, I can see them setting up the Quill/Gamora ship already... and REALLY hope they leave that alone... Gamora is not some token hotty to be saved or won over... she's the most dangerous female in the galaxy, and deserves respect.
So far, the biggest misstep (as per the trailer) is that in the lore of the comics.. all these people are relatively well known or infamous... so the whole "who are these guys?" sub plot/comic relief bit just doesn't fly.
I get that the viewing public doesn't know the characters... but the GALAXY does. It's not just "some guy named Drax, that some people called "destroyer"" or "some amazonian green alien chick that calls herself gamora" or "some blond guy who calls himself "star lord" for no apparent reason"....
this isn't a band of unknown mysteries saving the universe despite all odds...
it's a collection of the worst reputations in the entire galaxy... its like capturing 5 riddicks, each with his/her own infamous legend.... who have the GALL to meddle in the affairs of said Galaxy, when it threatens to pee in earth's Cheerios.

Malcolm Reynolds...heck a Firefly 'vibe' from the trailer is exactly what I got. I've never read a GOTG comic but just from the Firefly feel I got I'm already sold.
Firefly and I think a tad of Farscape. Farscape were a bunch of criminals and misfits.

It's always hard to judge things like this from just a few seconds of trailer but after thinking about what we saw it does seem like Quill might have a sort of Malcolm Reynolds vibe. I could totally see like a younger version of Mal doing that whole "Whoops, I didn't know how this bird-shooting machine worked" thing to a bunch of Alliance space cops.
While I can accept the idea that in the comics all of these characters are already supposed to be cosmic bad-asses in their own right maybe this film is going to be geared more like an "origin" story for them all.
As I understand in the comics all of these characters were supposedly established in their own stories before they arbitrarily brought them together to form a group. Since most of the viewing public (including myself) really know nothing about those backstories maybe the film makers decided it'd be easier to introduce these characters as a reluctant group of misfits to begin with instead of focusing anything on their lives "before" the group. In that way it might be sort of like a futuristic "Dirty Dozen" at least from the perspective of a group of galactic prisoners set on a dangerous mission to collectively do something good for everyone.
Looks like it has a chance to be cool regardless. ;)

The trailer, since I don't see it linked by anyone.
Meh.. lothic... I don't think it's in any way "difficult" for audiences to understand that a character has a history/reputation in the setting without physical evidence on screen.
and consider your dirty dozen analogy.... all those characters were "well known badasses" before we ever met them, and we're told they are.
there would have been nothing wrong (indeed, it would have FIT better) to do something similar here.
and by Mal, I wasn't talking so much about personality (which I totally agree this could be that sort of role) but also his position in galactic society... he's KNOWN in the universe.. even as "one of the browncoats" he's known, and he wear's that infamy on his chest proudly.
Quill and his teammates, in the trailer, are essentually unknowns... which is just wrong for the characters.
I think my Riddick comment is apt. We never needed to see "why" Riddick was the ultimate evil bastard of the universe... to "get" that he was supposed to be. The character showed his ability on screen without ever needing much exposition about his past.
secondary and furnature characters should REACT to these characters... they may not be in "awe" (they should be terrified of Gamora, annoyed with Rocket, disgusted with Quill, and at least nervous of Groot and Drax) but they should KNOW these people... even if it's just "myths and rumors"
They are a band of misfits.... but they're weaponized plutonium misfits, not the bad news bears.

Well for what it's worth it's always possible that this whole "line-up" scene in the trailer won't actually make it to the movie itself. Although this little sight-gag was pretty funny regardless:

Again going on the premise that many/most people who will see this movie currently know nothing about these characters maybe this prison line-up scene was more for the purposes of briefly introducing the characters to us, the audience, instead of introducing them to everyone else in the galaxy who supposedly knows them already. If that's the case the fact that the "prison guards" in the trailer don't seem to know who they are might prove to be immaterial to the actual movie.
Either way like I implied before if they are actually going with the "unknown prisoners turned reluctant heroes" plotline (along the lines of The Dirty Dozen) it might end up simultaneously pissing-off the "comic nerds" and being a good movie for the unwashed masses at the same time. I guess we'll see.

(Disclaimer: I am among those who had never really heard of this title nor these character prior to the announcement of the film.)
I think this trailer was exactly what it needed to be.
First, it briefly and bluntly introduced the 5 main characters. That was necessary since, as has been established, these characters are far from "well-known" by anyone other than dedicated Marvel fans.
Second, the trailer established that this Marvel film should be taken much less seriously than its predecessors, though will still have plenty of the action, creatures, and cleverness that we've come to expect from Marvel Studios. After all, we (the audience) are going to have to believe in and root for a gun-slinging, talking raccoon and a humanoid tree. As far as Marvel protagonists go, that is by far the most extreme that we've encountered. An element of "camp" helps disarm the audience and bring them into a vastly different part of the Marvel universe.
At the end of the trailer, we are left with a literal lineup of the 5 main characters, all very different from one another, while a seemingly ill-fitting (and consequently, funny) song plays in the background, and then we get the title of the film, thus leaving the audience wanting to know more.

I don't think it's a bunch of prisoners turned into a group. By how they did it in the trailer, they're already a group "They call themselves, the Guardians of the Galaxy." Possibly they set themselves up to be captured.
Yeah but with the way the last guard guy dismissively retorts to that statement with, "... bunch of a-holes" it seems for at least part of the movie the whole idea of them being a "famously awesome supergroup" is going to be questionable at best.
I highly suspect this movie will follow the classic formula they used in the Avengers movie: A collection of loners are reluctantly shoved together and united by a common goal that will, only by the end, forge them into a solid well-respected team. This will be an "origin" story plain and simple.

I was looking forward to seeing Chris Pratt in a really different role, but from the preview he seems still kinda just...Andy Dwyer.
On the other hand, my daughter appreciated how ripped he got for this. :-)

yeah, I wouldn't brag about that one, Nov..... dudes in the trailer were tool sheds.
Novas in Marvel are generally pretty freaking badass... these guys seemed like goobers.

Well maybe the "freaking badass" guys are out doing cool things while they let their less-than-cool "goober" buddies pull guard duty in the prison. ;)

that is SOOO not how comic book universes work ;P
in comic books, the accountants of the space cops are five times more bad-ass than the average action movie hero ;P

I think this will work better than taking the original characters (including the world's oldest astronaut, a REALLY heavy guy designed to live on Jupiter and Star Lord and his glowy wings). This sort of 'dirty dozen' type story often scans well with audiences.
I remember when Star Wars was cool...a long, long time ago...
And the actual movie did not disappoint. ^_^

Guardians was fun and all.. but... I was somewhat hoping this would open up the possibility that Richard Rider would be introduced in the Marvel Movie Universe now. ;)

That possibility is still open, just because we've seen what the Nova Corps had at Xandar at that time, doesn't mean they didn't have more elsewhere. Or that they won't try to fill in a gap by recruiting super-Novae. ^_^
I am still wondering when, if, and/or how Quill's Spartoi dad will make an appearance...

Regarding the Nova Corps - perhaps it's just the Centurions that have access to the armor, while the lower ranks (like the Denarians) only have access to the fighter pod thingies.
Also - there are rumours that Richard Rider and Adam Warlock are being considered for the sequel.
Unfortunately, due to events in the film and the nature of the spread-out movie rights we will likely not see the full Marvel cosmic verse in all it's glory - Galactus and his Heralds, the Shi'Ar, the Skrulls, the Annihilators and so forth.
Now that the movie is out and people have seen it, you might want to slap a Spoiler tag on the thread if people are really going to delve into it at all.

haven't seen the flic yet...but was very depressed to see the nova corps presented as "goobers". its a sad day indeed, given Nova (Richard Rider), is one of my favorite characters in the marvel universe. unfortunately, they stuck Richard into the cooler by trapping him in the cancerverse and there's a new Nova brat (Sam Alexander...aka: NINO! (Nova In Name Only) running around in the comics.
GOTG is but a part of a small part in the marvel universe usually referred to as Cosmic Marvel, or some such. these stories are not earth-centric and deal with events out in the galaxy. one of the best story lines out there is the annihilation series, which pretty much tied in all the major players in Cosmic Marvel in some way.
I have been outta the loop from Cosmic Marvel for a good bit but that the last I recall about what's happening in Cosmic Marvel.
