a dead hero gets his 25 foot tall statue. and now his soul seeks insane revenge on the living?
such a thing, in a sacred place of safety.....i love the irony.
give me a morbid statue of doom please.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that would be an instanced mission.
That might be a fun mission, though. Especially if you add in exploding statues or hills. Or set the streets on fire, if we go all out.

It could be in public. It'd be like a monster event. I think it'd be great.

I was thinking that- but how do you put the statue back when you're 'done playing?'
I guess if ya knock the demon out of it.. Or it just resets somehow.

Maybe it doesn't return to it's original spot. Perhaps it would stay where it fell as an unmovable colossus with the likes of Mjölnir or Excalibur--except worthiness has nothing to do with it. He cannot be moved until he wakes again. New players would come in after the event took place, wondering what this statue is doing laying in the middle of Alexandria. Stories would go around talking about the insane battles that ensued to take him out.

It statue could just respawn a while later... yes you have to suspend your brain for this to "work" ingame, but unless every office room keeps track of every single enemy defeated in it, its going to happen anyway (in instanced content).
Well, there's been a lot of talk about events changing the in-game world. The idea of a mob becoming a landmark in different locations, only to resurrect every 6-8 months, and cause further destruction is awesome. It's an event that would be constantly anticipated when ever you pass it. I'm sure something could be eventually figured out to make him stationary object. Though the effect would still be there if he respawned to his normal spot, it'd be way cooler if he stayed where he fell.

The problem with "events changing the game world", especially if something like phasing is NOT used, is something that Guild Wars 2 suffers from... a "don't join from the start, play all the time, you will miss it" kind of problem.
And that can be off putting for the player base...
if it is reset, then perhaps have a nearby clock tower (which never makes any sounds) start chiming gongs 13 times. after this the statue awakens. a warning that a zone event is about to happen?
explain it?
okay.
a spirit goes around possessing statues. different ones. he is defeated, and the town fixes whatever statue he broke. each time the town thinks the spirit is defeated for good.
should be easy since most statues will just be giant avatars posed in grey.

you know, alot of people will have statues of themselves ingame.
nothing like getting people to notice you, if they were chased by a 30 foot tall epic monster boss that was a statue of you......

I hardly think missing a statue resurrecting for the first time would ruin anything for new comers. If anything, it adds more mystery and history to the game, which is missing in a lot of games.

That's all well and good for those newcomers who are there *when it resurrects.* But what about those who aren't there until after the event is over?
Without some way to reset the event of the statue coming to life, is there anyway for those players to experience it for themselves? (Well I guess there is always other statues, other zones and instanced versions of statue attacks but other than those three...)

It's no different than the holiday events in CoH, except this would be one monster who'd have an event 3 times a year or so.

Remember remember the 5th of November
there bbaaaaaaaaccccckkkkkkkkk.
you know, the huge fast food places sometime have giant mascots on top of them......
atop fatty burger:
how about a 40 foot tall , fat, steel clown, that blows a flamethrower out his mouth, once every 60 seconds.
once possessed:
he could shoot massive blasts of fire, pick up his straw hat (which is made of of steel) and throws it like a frisbee (once), and make one helleva punch.
the ghostbusters are doomed.

Ah, I think I see. For some reason, I was thinking this would require the use of a pre existing statue in a zone. That makes a bit more sense.

Just so long as you don't make it a blink and you miss it event (ie it takes 30 minute complete, but it only happens 3 or 4 times a year).
I know that people complained about events happening just Once a month (rare spawn, nothing linked to it), just for the prestige value of "having killed it".
I hate to be the guy that says "Wrong place, Wrong Time" bud... but this does seem like it.
Seasonal Events though are generally not all that bad. They are *plannable* around, you can always say "well there is next year that I can get it".
What would suck is if it was a *seasonal* event, that had permanent "gameplay" rewards that were only available from that *years* event of the seasonal event.
And there is the fact that seasonal events tend to run for 1 to 2 weeks anyway. Which is long enough in my mind to say "well if you have it you have it, if you missed it, better luck next year".
Anyways, For an event like this, which happens just 3 or 4 times a year (and it appears to be *relatively* fast to complete), I would say that this is also pretty much a 1 character attempt as well... And for a game that is going for the "alting is part of endgame"... would you be prepared to do it on just 3 or 4 characters *per year*?
This sort of thing feels more like a Summer Movie Event that could be instanced, instead of something that happens in the outer world.

Yeah, that's true, Gangrel. Good point. Seasonal events do last quite a while. Perhaps there could be mysterious teaser news bits stating, "A familiar rumble has been heard in Alexandria." "The tremor in the "fillinblank" district is in Alexandria getting stronger." Then make it ultra obvious when the time comes. I think there should be more mini-events like this to spice the game up a little bit. I feel not enough events happen in the outer world. We can do instanced events all day long. The Rikti Raids and Zombie Apocalypse events were pretty fun. More of those like a massive statue(s) wrecking the place, and needing everyone in the zone to help out is the kind of fun I'd like to look forward to.

Also, the statue could get up more than once over the course of 2 days. That'd give plenty of time for people to join in on the fun.

I think you are misreading it. Having an 'event' like this could consist of it happening multiple times over some period of time.
Winterlord in City of Heroes 'happened' once a year yet consisted of more than having him spawn once a year for a single fight.

Large public events are what I generally look forward to in MMO's... although the Rikti Raids/Zombie apocalypses were annoying when I had an open world mission at that point in time...
But yeah, a large event, where if you are in the *correct* place for a 2 or 3 hour window, you have a 100% chance of seeing the event, I can live with. That means that even if you only play for a few hours a day, you should be able to do it on at least one character, maybe 2 or 3 (depends on the style of event of course)
you know, if it brought a big enough statue to life, it might be the largest, most fearsome thing ingame. for days, people might avoid a zone, or keep their eyes peeled when the ground started to shake under their feet a bit too much.
and it would have to activate a preexisting statue. otherwise, what's the fun? something you have come to know, a safe spot, a familiar face. now it wants to mash you like a fly.
all fun.

Sounds familiar. Rather like the Blood Moon event in CO. 13 heroes who died trying to stop Dr. Destroyer, raised as undead by the necromancer, Takophanes.... ^_^

little jimmy said, "my game has tanks, AND jets, so what does your game have?"
little bobby responded, "ninjas, supervillians, demons, and 250ft tall giant possessed statues, i think one of them ate godzilla"
little jimmy looked puzzled, "huh?"

:P Champs isn't the first to do that. And of all the things I never liked about Champs, that one is one of the few that escape my wrath. Bloodmoon RULES. Kicking Takofanes's skeletal rear never got old when they introduced his fight some years later.
Blackest Night is, IMO, the more noteworthy of the "Dead heroes rise again" storylines.
