this cartoon uses real companies to make side money....about superheroes.....

many heroes have ads right on their costumes.
not that all billboards need have a real ad, but is letting dominos pizza contribute to the game via ingame ad so bad?
they might even make a television ad using the game as a "thing".
they could even have a "sponsered hero" ingame that acts as a contact.
city of heroes said no. and their solution was to have ads on things that got old fast, and really added nothing to the game. making money is not wrong.

I think this would be a perfectly valid addition to MWM's business model. However, it may also add legal costs due to the varied laws regarding "advertising to children" in different countries and US states.
For instance, I've heard Germany apparently has a law prohibiting the depiction of real firearms in video games (I'll try to avoid ranting about this, but I'm just using it as an example), meaning that there would be issues the in German localized version if Smith and Wesson wanted to buy billboard space. While firearm advertisements would seem obviously more controversy than MWM wants, there may be a lot more similar conflicts like this when dealing with in-game advertising.

then have the gamers post their date of birth into the database as they sign up, and only certain ads will show for certain people?
even world of warcraft has crossed over to other companies. a fantasy game. companies would be tripping over each other, bidding for approval for a SUPERHERO GAME.

Actually, this might be a good way to involve smaller companies as well. For example, a lot of webcomics (superhero ones in particular, but other ones that might meet a criteria) could get billboard ads in the game by paying an agreed fee to MWM for such. I know I'd do so for both my webcomic and my novel series.
if not billboards, then busstops. or even graffiti. heck, there could be ads in between arena matches, while watched in bars or bases on ingame screens.
or that television shop, that has all the televisions.... one or two have moving changing screens....
