Spec-Built or Themed Teams

One thing I really loved in CoH were themed teams. All weather, all cold, all fire or whatever. I've lead or played on teams with LOTS of different themes. I'm hoping to do so again in CoT.

Since we don't have specifics on the ATs yet, use the best CoH equivalent for now.

What kind of themed teams would you like to play in and why?

My two favorites are the Common Origin (we were all hit by the same bomb, all Mutants, all on the same irradiated spacecraft or whatever) and the Common Power Theme (all Rad, all Fire etc). The former is good for setting up small but active SGs with a few tight friends for scheduled play. The latter is good for Theme Nights or superteams trying to see if they can take on all challenges. Either one allows for a variety of ATs (for that time when you REALLY need a Tank) but still provides a common hook.

I remember when Star Wars was cool...a long, long time ago...

If inplimented, I'd like to see it work like the bonuses do in the X-men Legends and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance games. E.g., team of fire-throwers get extra DoT, team of healers get extra healing, etc.

Best theme I was ever a part

Best theme I was ever a part of: the concept was the imaginary friends are real, but who imagined who? Is it multiple facets of the same personality or alternate versions of the same person from other realities. We had 6 people, all with the same costume and face but different hair styles. I'm trying to remember all the names: Fabrycation, Fallaci, Fantasi, Fyction, Fygment, and Faebele (wife had a screen shoot, woot).

I always wanted to do a dark/ice/fire demonic team. Debuff/slow/dot/fear, seemed pretty sweet. In CoX terms:

Fire/Dark Scrapper
Fire/Dark Brute
Dark/Dark Stalker
Dark/Ice Tanker
Ice/Ice Dominator
Ice/Ice Corruptor
Fire/Fire Controller
Demons/Pain Mastermind

5 OClock Shadow
"The Five", "Old Scruff", "Wolfbrand", "Tashomono"

Yeah... Kinda makes me wish that I was bigger on teams and SG's. I was too busy test-driving in my quest to find the ultimate powerset combo, but now it doesn't even matter anymore. :(

Maybe an all operator/master

Maybe an all operator/master (I think the official term is master) you could give the bonus of strengthening strong pets in exchange for disabling the weakest.

I guess I'm sticking to the format I suggested,
; maybe I'm hyperpragmatic

My friend and I ran a regular

My friend and I ran a regular 'Mastermind Mondays' event for over a year (mainly because I missed Tanker Tuesday all the time due to work). Yeah...it wasn't so bad when the Primaries were mixed but we often ran Superteam nights (to encourage alts) where it was all Zombies, all Robots or whatever. All Zombies was the Zerg rush and all 'Bots was the laser light show from hell.

I have fond memories of an all scrapper team I ran in Talos once, way back before scrappers had even gotten the archetype critical hits bonus inherent.

Although I think my favorite themed group, which wasn't even possible until cross teaming, was simply having a team of eight different archetypes. Preferably just using basic archetypes, although I was okay with the Veteran epic archetypes in the mix.

I only got to do it a few times, but it was always fun.

Oh and of course- playing on a beta test team based on one or more new powers was always a blast. Especially with bows and arrows.

If we get the much requested ten team cap, it'd be interesting to try to put together ten separate specialties on the same team.

From a roleplaying perspective, it would have been interesting to go all one origin, but I didn't really bother trying that since it was so superfluous to actual gameplay.

I remember once ending up on

I remember once ending up on an all-blaster team. Completely unplanned, just kinda happened when PUGing one night. After a brief discussion on whether the team was viable, we thought "screw it", set difficulties to max, and dove in.
It was glorious.
We moved through the mish at a running pace, not stopping between mobs at all. A big, rolling, flaming, exploding ball of doom leaving charred bodies in its wake.
So loud.
So bright.
"Damage mitigation" happened because the mobs died before they could even target anything. I don't remember any specifics like what powersets were involved, or exactly how many missions we steamrolled, just a sense of rapid, hectic motion, noise and colored light. It was all I could do to just set a teammate to follow and mash tab and number keys.

I wish I had found out about Tanker Tuesday sooner, those were a lot of fun as well.

I fought on an all-ice team

I fought on an all-ice team once with my main. Everything was either frozen or slowed to the max. Only once did we get in over our head (Tank accidentally aggro'd much of "the layer cake room"), but 3 of us managed to pop off Hibernate before it was too late. It was freaking awesome seeing 3 heroes burst from ice tombs all at once to continue the fight.

For the most part, I was more interested in teams/groups that had a common back-story. That's how The Talsorian Guard started on Pinnacle. Granted, almost every character was of Science or Technology origin, but that was due to the background. But such thinking was better for a long-term type thing, rather than a pick-up "what if we..." type situation.

I just hope like hell that the devs keep the Hibernate power from Ice Armor and the Granite Armor power from Stone Armor. Those two Tier 9 powers were hands-down the most God-awesome defensive powers in the game.

I would have LOVED to see the Thug Rush in a League! I don't know why I never thought of it.

Yes, I've done the all-Blaster thing before. Ours wasn't a good mix IIRC because the melty-goodness wasn't QUITE that good. However when one guy dropped and a Controller came in it was WILD after that.

I've been on LOTS of all-defender or all-Controller teams. Very much fun

One night our Pug accidentally formed up the JLA. We had a SS/Invul tank with a blue suit and red cape, my shrunken Brute named Crimson Atom, a tall Scrapper with BS and Shield, a Stalker that COULD have been Bat-related and a SS Scrapper with MA. It was completely unintentional but great fun and we even took a group event CC when we were finished.

Of course, depending on how you do it, no matter how fast and on the same page everyone is, I suspect any half way decent AV would have a large chunk of the early summons dead before the last few are summoned. :)

The two types of spec team I enjoyed were an all Empathy Defender SG and an all Kinetic SG. Running with multiple Speed boosts and Increase Density was a blast. Being able to use your "Nova" without bottoming out on Endurance meant no break in the use of attacks.

They were more than a little broken, but I loved running with a team of all-VEATS. An Arachnos strike team was almost disturbingly unstoppable. To this day I have a preference for AOE buff stacking teams.

I don't know if it would launch with power customization options or not, but my guess is it would eventually have that functionality before the game goes live.

I wouldn't worry about your English at all. I understood you better than many people posting on Steam forums right now.

Yeah I was on an all-Widow team once. Frightening. I also ran an all-Stalker thing for a little while. Only problem was one guy insisted on taking (I forget the powerset name...Thorns? Something with an AoE fairly early on). So while the rest of us lined up on our targets (one per minion, two per Lt and the rest on the boss) he'd stand in the middle. I'd count down and bam!...he drew ALL the aggro and died just as we were striking. Had to rez him 2-3 times per mission minimum.

The rest of it was a blast though. No residual trace...just a trail of bodies...

This would require the power sets and animations to be ready, so I'm going to guess that this is a big no. I presume that the beta (which we may be lucky enough to get by the end of the year) will be for costumes, only. There may be some placeholder stuff for other functionality (i.e. animation sets previews and selection, power costumization), but costumes will definitely be the primary focus.

A couple I've never seen at high level that I thought would be great to see:
Love to see the Fire/Sonic controllers my friends and I all started and see what they would be like at 50 (or at least past 32nd, we didn't get out of the low teens due to life etc.).

I missed out on a intra-sg contest RO ran once where Green Machine did not fair well comparatively. They had a lot of trouble getting past the AV's owing to the one true inherent weakness they possess, a lack of regen debuff. I'd love to redo that one with a bunch of Emp/Sonics included and see how much the -resist debuff of sonics blasts did for things.

Lastly my friends and I had a group of 5 as a dedicated team, 1 scrapper and 4 defenders with the theme of all having a Dark power set We ended up somewhat randomly with a very powerful team. Scrapper (DM/WP), and the defenders Dark Miasma/Arch, Dark/Dark, Cold/Dark and Sonic/Dark. We were are own worst enemy, we bored ourselves to death by the mid twenties. I would have loved seeing what they could've have done at 50 as Incarnates

I can't believe no one's

I can't believe no one's mentioned this up till now, but who else remembers running past one, or seeing a whole team of danger rangers? That said, there should/could be some kind of team attack combo mechanism. It could be hard to pull off but I always loved team attack combos (Like Chrono Trigger, Genki Dama, or any giant combining robot.)

Though I'm sure there would be a huge issue trying to make something like this that combines multiple styles of robots combining into one, it would be neat, but I'm sure that's nearly impossible. :(

I may not be the best one to answer, but I'll give it a shot. RO is the Repeat Offender Network. In CoH it was a Coalition of SG/VG that were found on Freedom, Justice, Virtue, and Exalted. There were 40 or so groups on those 4 servers all linked by a Global channel and by similar ideals. Most of the Groups had a common theme or powersets with some amount of build requirements. For example we had two all Tanker SG's, an all Scrapper SG, an all Empathy/* Defender SG, a Kinetics SG, an all Corruptor VG, and all Ape VG. A lot of fun running a team of 8 virtually identical Apes through the City going from one instance mission to the next.
The main idea was to have fun, level by utilizing teamwork rather than farming or PL, and be respectful of others. They are the reason I played the game the last 3 years it was operational.

Probably the best way to get a definition of RO would be to visit the website and take a look around. http://repeat-offenders.net/

If any RO members want to fill in what I missed, have at it.

Freeblast summed it up well.

Freeblast summed it up well. Repeat Offenders Network started off in part, as I dimly recall, as a reaction to the "you're a defender so just heal and no attacking" (and if you aren't healing you got the boot) mindset born of the 'trinity' aspect of so many other games out there. Pinball Wizards, Perfect Storms with other defender groups following closely, formed the Coalition of SG's which sometime after there initial creation became the Repeat Offenders/Repeat Offenders Network. And as a whole we just kept creating more concept/theme and build ideas with respective SGs and VG's to fill them.

@Foradain - To me the term offender isn't so much an edge case of build design (though strong elements of the build are involved at times) as a play style and the mindset of the player behind the actual build. Most of my Empaths could readily sit back and spam HO and HA until the proverbial cows come home. Many carried both Rez and AP as well. But rarely did I do so even in the days long before Inventions and set IO's existed. About the only thing I didn't ever do was follow the concept as some "healzors" build did and tack on the Medicine Pool (just as I have seen some GM builds not take HO or Rez).

Well, that certainly cleared everything up, save for one small question...

What's an "Ape?"
