So, until you open the barrel, the contents are invisible, and once the barrel is opened they are visible. I can't figure out how that is different from a mundane barrel. Unless the barrel is made of glass?

Ah. A few decades after it was enchanted, it might be useful for smuggling, in areas where x-rays are used for scanning cargo. When it was enchanted, much less so...
So the next question is, were the enchanters foresighted (or even fivesighted or sixsighted ^_^), or did they have something else in mind? (not actually expecting an answer to that, unless and until we find it ^_^)

The enchantment remains a mystery. Unless your character has the ability to see the past you'll have to figure that out yourself. Right now how ever smuggling is what the detectives think is why the enchantment was made. The owner still has his eyes and from the look of them you can see he died in a state of terror.

The problem with the smuggling theory is that when the enchantment was allegedly made (pre-WWI at latest), no one was using x-rays to look for contraband. If they wanted to know what was in the barrel, they would have opened it, which would make the contents visible again.
Eventually, Goldenrod may try scrying, but it would be an long ritual to look that far back. I'm thinking as long as she can find things out with other methods (including short-range scrying to see what she can of the crime itself) she'll keep that in reserve.

It's a world full of super heroes, if they didn't have the technology they still probably had people who could do it just the same.

Good point. They were rare then, and often in hiding, but not non-existent.
