Pay Powers

It would be cool to see some flavor powers (You know basically just re-skins for base powers) that could be used by players to further customize their characters. They should also be free for Sub players.

What does everyone think?

Good is not something you are, its something you do.

That's the foundational

That's the foundational concept for our power theming setup.

The way it works is that the visual aspect of a power is not tied to the in-game mechanics. So, you hit "Burning Bolt" and you may be spitting a fireball out of your mouth, while the guy next to you with the same power is shooting a flamethrower.

And yes, the goal is to provide a base level for these, and allow for the unlock (through either game-play or pay) of additional themes.

OH! Awesome so its gonna be

OH! Awesome so its gonna be like the Power Spectrum update from CoX. That kindof makes me want to ask a few questions?

How many variations can we expect from launch?
How are you gonna deal with attack speed variations- Someone using Martial Arts or Escrima Sticks is certainly going to have a faster attack rate than someone using Super-strength or a War-hammer. Or will it be partially based on character Archetype?
Do you have any criteria for what styles players can start with, will have to unlock, or have to buy?

Personally I would say: (Using Bludgeoning as a example as it was the first to be explained to me)
Basic: Quintessential Alterations like Super-strength, General Martial Arts, Maces, Sludge Hammers.
Unlocked: More specific classifications like Muay Thai, Escrima Sticks, Boxing, and War-hammers.
Pay: Truly unique Styles like Drunken Master, Graviton Hammers, Thunderous Strength, Ect.

But that's just my opinion, I doubt wed even see that many options at launch.

Good is not something you are, its something you do.

Animations can have their

Animations can have their speed adjusted to meet the powers need.

What will be available at launch is still too far away to know. In effect, it is "however many as we can finish." It is not like we are release-then-done, after all. We will be adding more throughout.

Toon Power!

I would like for once to actually purchase something, and have it be exclusive, not available for everyone. Fact is, I'm successful. I have lots of disposable income. Please do not marginalize what I buy because other don't have the money to buy what I have. I drive a 2002 Pontiac. Works fine. Have it for years. I take care of it. Just because I can afford a new car doesn't mean I want a new car.

City of Villains had the Mastermind, then it was bundled as CoX, then given away free along with the Soldier/Widow. F2P has access when they got to 50.

I don't mean to be facetious, honestly I don't, but if you want something that no one else has you should probably stick to console games. In order for a MMORPG to succeed, all aspects of the game must be available to everyone who plays. That is just the reality of the marketplace.

Individuality was much easier to express in CoX because the character creator offered so many billions of different possible combinations. CoT promises to have a superb variety of unique costume pieces which each individual can mix and match in any way they like, plus powersets are going to be designed to be highly customizable as well. Individuality will come through creativity not exclusivity. In today's MMORPG, this is a good thing.

.

At first I was confused thinking you wanted something designed just for you. Even more confused about the relevance of being successful. Further confused by the 2002 Pontiac.

But if I understand you right you want something to be exclusive in the game and you never want that exclusivity to change. Sorry but nothing will stay exclusive forever.

Oh and by the by, having money or not having money is hardly the only reason why someone has an exclusive item or costume or whatever.

There's a fundamental difference between something being PERMANENTLY exclusive in a MMO and it being TEMPORARILY exclusive. All too often people see the word "exclusive" attached to something and automatically assume that means that thing will (or even should) be exclusive forever.

I have no problem with the idea of things being temporarily exclusive, even if the timeframe of "temporary" is like a year or two. I do however have a huge problem with anything being permanently exclusive. I simply think that eventually everyone should be able to have access to anything the game offers sooner or later, even if it's some kind of scenario where X item was free to get for a limited time then becomes something you'd have to pay for in the cash store at a later date once the "period of exclusivity" has expired.

Basically the elitist notion that anything that starts out being "exclusive" in a MMO must remain "permanently exclusive" is nonsensical to me.

don't say that to some of the

don't say that to some of the KS folks...well, unless your wearing body armor. :p

I agree though, a set period of time (a year, as set forth by MWM for costumes and weapons) seems reasonable to me. this allows for folks to have time alone with their shiney and eventually opens the door to others so they can play with it too.

it's kinda funny as I really like the costume design option and I would loooove to have White Peregrine's costume actually be represented in the game. I doubt I would actually purchase it though, as I don't want anyone else to use it...like...ever! as such, I have pretty much decided that he will use whatever resources are available in game, which means his look will more than likely be radically different than how I actually have him portrayed.

As a "KS folk" myself I can tell you unequivocally that I absolutely LOVED the idea that certain things are only going to be exclusive for a period of one year and I absolutely HATED that the Devs of this game bothered to give us a "KS badge" that will be permanently exclusive to the people who were merely lucky enough to be around here 18 months ago.

I don't need to treated like a "special elitist snowflake" with having such a badge and if I had any say in the matter I would actually direct the Devs of CoT not only REMOVE that badge from existence right now but I would have lobbied vigorously for it to not have existed in the first place. Absolutely NOTHING in a MMO should be established to be PERMANENTLY exclusive, especially something like a badge that's going to hyper-annoy the general badge collecting community long before the game even launches.

Frankly the KS badge is really one of the most glaring mistakes the Devs of this game have already made. I didn't even need body armor to make myself clear about that. *shrugs*

Maybe Lothic wants MWM to turn the KS forum badge into a TCB (Titan City Backer) badge.
So, anyone, at any time, can donate and get it, even 10 years from now, even if its people using BitCoins. ;)

I can see Lothic's point, but

I can see Lothic's point, but I think that "one of the most glaring mistakes" is a bit harsh. If that's the worst "opportunity" this game creates, then it will be a smashing success. Izzy I think you are right on the mark. It could easily be remedied if it was a mistake. In fact, I think I generally agree with Lothic on this point. Lothic is obviously one of the epic posters of the forums and for good reasons. I just hope we maintain the fun and friendly atmosphere that COH had.

Something like this would have been a much better idea than "let's toss out a one-time only badge for something a player would have needed to do during a small period of time 2+ years BEFORE the game even existed". Typing out those words just now highlights the relative silliness of ANY badges awarded before a given game even exists.

Don't get me wrong - I'm still going to play this game despite the unfortunate KS badge. *shrugs*

I was just using a bit of dramatic hyperbole to point out that the Devs have already unwisely decided to allow for "one-time only" badges that newer players will (apparently) never have a chance to get. That issue actually turned out to be one of the more ongoing fundamental "annoyances" with the CoH badging system and it caused a good deal of unnecessary angst among many players over the years that I sort of hoped would have been avoided in CoT.

It was just sad for me to see that the CoT Devs were willing to ignore that "lesson learned" from CoH from its very beginning. I can understand why a "KS badge" might have seemed like a straightforward idea at the time back in October 2013. But in the long run badges like that only tend to annoy the newer players (who have no chance to get them) and promotes negative elitist mentalities amongst many of the "old timers" which is always something better avoided than encouraged.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. The Isolator badge was a bit frustrating for many. And btw...

Dude, they could release the game with half a zone, one class, and one enemy type and you'd play the living heck out of it. I know because I'll be playing it right there with you.

In that case you should have donated to the Kickstarter at the "Fashionista" level like I did. I'm going to have THREE 3-D object/weapons and a full costume that _ONLY_I_ get to have....

I honestly find it weird that

I honestly find it weird that this is even a question. I JUST heard about this game and JUST created an account on this forum. I get that you want to be a true unique snowflake but whats to stop the thousands of other people that want to have a unique costume from plugging the forum with demands and recounting all the "disposable income" they have which makes them deserve to have it.
IMO they should have temporary costumes on the marketplace for anyone to grab for whatever unspecified amount of time for free-to-players and leave it up for eternity for subscribers. One thing I absolutely hated about Archeage was the fact that I started waaaaaaaaaaaaay too late to grab really awesome costume pieces that I saw other players wearing.
Even still, if you really want to make this temporary marketplace item idea a go then have players gain the ability to unlock the ability to purchase it (or unlock it in general) by doing some weird challenge. Let's say you're selling a fireman's suit and it gets dropped off the marketplace. Have a player do 100 random encounters that involve saving people from burning buildings or putting out forest fires or whatever and unlock the ability to purchase (or the item itself) again. Typing that out makes me feel like that's way too much programming, but I hope whoever sees my point.

I tried DCUO about a year ago

I tried DCUO about a year ago and started doing research for what costume pieces I would need to hunt for to get a working version of Nightmare. The ONLY helmet even worth trying for was sadly a PvP reward from the 3rd season and was removed from any form of purchase for those who didn't already get it when the 4th came. Nothing else came close and as someone who is highly obsessive when it comes to appearances that actually made me quit the game period. Cosmetics that can only be gained within a certain window are great, but the problem is that the window has to be a repeatable event.

Agreed, or allow players with subscriptions to access all passed marketplace items. So you miss a seasonal item because you started school or got deployed, or you start the game super late and you get your 3 month free subscription, you can checkout the time machine tab and see a sick sword model that you GOTTA HAVE for you to make your character. Boom Diddy Bop you got it. Incentivizes players to subscribe and then pay like $1 for a piece of a costume.
