Civilian NPC the costume designer

((Placeholder for official content release declaration in the event MWM choses to use any or all of the following details. Permission willfully given, simply need the release form to make legal happy.))

Name: _____ Santos
Occupation: costume designer

Backstory: third generation hero costume designer, and a fifth generation clothing designer. He is the first male in the former and second in the latter since the Santos family immigrated to the US. His grandmother, Sophia, moved with her son Enrique to Titan City after her husband Enrique was killed in action during WWII, to pursue her interests in designing for the super powered. Enrique grew up with a bright mind and imagination, inventing some basic novelties for fans of various superheroes who wore his mothers designs. Enrique wed a designer at design company; a strong-willed girl named Joanna. Within a year they had a son. This NPC chose the path of tailor/designer like his mother and grandmother.

Personality: is unapologetically arrogant and prideful in his work and heritage. He often assumes he knows better as the designer what will or will not work for a client and is not afraid to tell each one just that. He is passionate in his designs, always pushing to have a costume inspire not just the citizens but the hero wearing it.

OOC: I'm writing up this backstory as a spot to keep information about a basic NPC I've written up in the role play forums, but one that could be useable by anyone and be enjoyable cameo. Personality is a bit of Carson and Serge from coh mixed in with the ever-famous Edna Mode from the incredibles. While I recognize some or all may not be usable, it's offered to anyone as long as no one but those explicitly stated here take credit.

((further edits in progress...))

Well I'm still hoping they go

Well I'm still hoping they go a different route than "Look super's famous costume designer!" we don't need such an NPC, but if they add one, I would think the idea of one called anything close to Serge would be a bad idea.

Fair enough. As for a famous

Fair enough. As for a famous costume designer for supers, I actually think Disney did get it right with someone like Edna. Realistically speaking not every superhero is going to have a tailoring background to make custom fitting costumes out of ballistic spidersilk and kevlar to withstand super-powered combat, especially the skin-tight suit wearing ones. Coco Chanel was famous for her designs and trendsetting, so if a fashion designer makes a name for a few commissioned super suits it's PLAUSIBLE. I'm not saying that everyone MUST use it, nor do I think everyone SHOULD use it. However, saying such an NPC is not desired is as limiting as saying everyone must use it, and that debate is hashed out elsewhere in a different thread and a different forum.

I'm happy to discuss other naming options, as I already said I am open minded to what else to name this NPC. Honestly I don't even care about the specific naming, I wanted to post the backstory idea as the important part. Furthermore, this is an NPC for the roleplay forum that I felt had potential to be utilized elsewhere and by others in that medium or other mediums, including as an NPC in the game.

Yeah and the whole famous

Yeah and the whole famous designer.. how many do you see at a store really? You see their designs, but the person wouldn't be there.

It could be fun if, for an

It could be fun if, for an (hefty) additional fee, players could have costumes made by designers and get some kind of badge or whatever that shows off 'Made by Osti di Milano'.

'course that's not going to be much bang for the buck if there isn't much world building.

Nina and I kinda talked about

Nina and I kinda talked about this when discussing NightWear (Night Industries fashion line).

Personally, if there's a special designer then that one should have exclusive parts you can only add on from Him/Her. NightWear, for example, would be more conservative clothing for formal outings like balls/charities/Party at Gatsby's. And maybe cyberpunk-ish type clothing for street wear.

OK so there's some wording

OK so there's some wording edits to make regarding his perception of his skill compared to his reputation. I'll work on cleaning that up. Thanks on the feedback there and please continue to provide it!

So even a startup designer could have a boutique workshop and storefront. The backstory idea was to have his family connected to the New York fashion industry and move to Titan City to capitalize on a potentially untapped industry. My thought was it had a pretty consistent American Dream entrepreneur opportunity written on it. So grandma moved, had a boutique, and thus this civilian grew up learning these skills and moving forward. His specialty is solidly in the clothing and tailoring, leaving such things as armored suits and gunsmiths room to be other specialists. I'm liking this idea and is consistent with other real world fashion designers' career history.

Well, even with supers, not

Well, even with supers, not likely enough to make it a worthwhile investment either, if you're using that logic.

Spider-Man for instance wouldn't be able to afford designer outfits.

Not part of a rich organization that pays the prices for these specially tailored outfits? Why would they make such an outfit and charge so little for them?

That's if we're going by the idea that Edna seemed so realistic. Heroes outside of teams with team uniforms also tend to have their own unique look. Also, is this Edna supplying known criminals as well? There's over half the supers (as there tends to be more super villains than super heroes).

As for what to name him, nothing wrong with going with a popular name...Robert "Bobby" Santos. (Note: I do not know if Sergio is a popular name in another country.)

Nina, your picture reminds me of Belle duJour, except for the hair color, and the clothing. Add that to Naughty NightWear... ^_^

Thanks Foradain! Your pic kinda reminds me of Brad Pitt, except for the hair, the clothes, the face... ;P

Seriously tho, that pic of me was drawn by a very good artist who played on Guardian who goes by Duck L'Orange. Check out his deviant art page for more of his drawings of some of us.

Oh, and pretty much everything I wear is Naughty NightWear originals! ;)

Can we revive this topic

Can we revive this topic under a broader idea? I suggested it a while ago, but I really think there could be a little mini game made out of this idea, so to speak. I spent more time making my costume than I did playing missions sometimes, however if there were 'hidden' accessible missions where you had to save Bobby Santos, or Edna (Whatever), in exchange for costume credits, pieces or whatever.

There could be different prices from different shops, Icon for instance was a fun thought, go get a costume no matter who you are, but it wasn't realistic. Even if their market were niche like providing low cost costumes, or the high dollar batsuits, there would be competition and rivalry, factions of frivolously fighting fashion fabricators! Point is there couldn't be one place since that violates monopoly laws. There couldn't be too much hype involved with them because that's silly too! If you were known for providing costumes for the flash, or some such notable hero, you would be targeted by villains, same goes with heroes.

There's already talk of hints and segmented mission design, so in this case there could be event, costume and designer mission drops. Events are obvious, it's halloween, save the headless horsemen from being slain by the aether pirates and get a pumpkin head. Costumes could be single missions that just give you one object, for instance, keep someone from stealing the katana Murasame, get a cool water slash animation. Or they could be a chain that leads to a large costume drop, like the ITF. Designer missions would be different, they'd be a method for giving people free costume tokens or discounts, not big, since costume creation should be a bit of a E-currency sink, but enough that the player doesn't end up spending all their Emunny on costumes instead of enhancements...

>.> I never did that... <.<

And not for the customary thread necromancy chant. O ci wut ah dyd thar o ci wut ah dyd thar o ci wut ah dyd thar.
