Ghost ship of cannibal rats

Where did Gizmodo get a hold of the plot of an upcoming CoT mission? ;)

If the article is to be

If the article is to be believed calling something that displaces 1,400 tons an "ocean liner" is being incredibly generous. I recently did some government contract work on a ship that weighs 2,285 tons and its length and beam were only 224ft. and 43ft. respectively. Many actual cruise ships today are easily 100 times heavier than the derelict described here.

Still, the idea something like that is floating around on the high seas with a horde of cannibalistic rats onboard is sort of funny, all things considered. ;)

What I want to know is who or

What I want to know is who or what activated the emergency signal broadcast from the ship or turned it off if the thing was automatic.

It's possible the rats ate

It's possible the rats ate some of the wiring. It's also possible that if it sank, it would be a race between salt water shorting out the power supply or a sufficient depth of water masking the signal.

Aww Foradain you just shot

Aww Foradain you just shot down a my dreams! Yeah sinking would cause it to short out, and rats have been known to eat wires. But where the fun in logic!

An emergency system like that could have triggered on by dozens of things including rats eating the wiring. Also things like bilge alarms, a lack of recent contact with a shore receiver/GPS or even a low power indicator (like what happens to most home smoke detectors when they get low on power) could have done it. What turned it off is even easier: power finally died completely or it sank.

Then again maybe the ghosts of all the dead rats are just toying with us... ;)

The only way this story could

The only way this story could get any better is if the ship was named "Moraine" ...

'Ocean liner' describes what the ship does, not its size. Sure, the Lyubov Orlova is no Queen Elizabeth, but it performed the same task.

I was simply expressing my real world experience as to what it's like to actually be at sea on a ship that's not that much bigger than this 1,400 ton tin can. It's far from being a "nice ride" if you hit almost anything over a ripple of a wave.

So yeah I'm sure the Russians had fun classifying this thing as an "Ocean Liner" the same way the Yugoslavs had fun classifying the Yugo as a "highway automobile".

Please... if people generally stopped being "pedantic" in threads like this then there'd probably only be like 10 posts sprinkled across this entire forum. ;)

It was being towed and broke free, so its beacon was turned off (source BBC radio 24 Jan)

I think the beacon they were talking about briefly turned on (then eventually turned off) like weeks/months after the ship broke loose and was drifting free. That's what makes it a little creepy. I can envision the rats driving the ship like the penguins in the Madagascar movies... ;)

I can agree with that, although at 100 meters (according to the BBC article) it isn't really a small ship. Having said that, I'll point out that I'd not want to spend more than three or four days on a ship of any size. I wouldn't mind going on a short cruise just to have made the experience. All in all, however, I think I'm more the type to go sailing for a couple of hours.

Well something's not really adding up with that. Again I know for certain that the ship I was on that I'm referring to was only 224ft. long (68.28 meters) yet weighed 163.2% more (2,285 tons versus 1,400 tons) than your supposed 100 meter ship. That'd mean this 100 meter "Ocean Liner" could have only been about 3 meters wide for those other numbers to work.

Either the BBC article's 100 meter length is wrong or the OP article's 1,400 ton weight is. *shrugs*

The numbers struck me as

The numbers struck me as strange, but then I've no experience in these matters so I had no basis for any kind of judgement call. It appears that this is another fine example of "journalism". It goes without saying that Wikipedia is hardly the end all, be all of factual information, but it does lead to this information on the Lyubov Orlova, which shows that its length overall is 100 meters, its deadweight tonnage is 1465 tonnes, and its displacement is 4160 tonnes.

One could broadly say that they were passing off the ship's cargo capacity as its weight. I've no idea which hat the BBC used to get the 1600 tonnes.

Well that makes a little more sense then. According to your new link the Lyubov Orlova (at a 4,160 ton displacement) is a good deal bigger than the ship I was recently on (which only displaces 2,285 tonnes) and makes the 68 versus 100 meter length more reasonable too.

For what it's worth I've been at sea on several other research ships with displacements of greater than 10,000+ tonnes. Even at 4,160 tonnes the Lyubov Orlova would have been a "fun ride" on anything but the calmest of seas. ;)

Canratocalypse? Are those

Canratocalypse? Are those canned rats, cannibal rats, or canned cannibal rats? Or is canned a euphemism for robotic, so that what we've really got are robotic cannibal rats?

Many forms of emergency

Many forms of emergency beacon are set to go off when they hit water; beacons on both lifeboats and individual life preservers will do that. If one such beacon washed overboard, it would trigger. And given the state of the ship, it's battery was likely running on a partial charge, or the device it was attached too didn't have much floatation left.
