Or, I do have a few dozen other characters to immortalize in art. I just didn't think I should greedily smother the Art Request forums and generous artists. I have lots of time to submit them.

That said, did you see those Amazing Knots?? Wow.

That was easier to do than I

That was easier to do than I realized. Once I figured out the proper order of it.

1) Top layer - set to color, to tone the grey lace pattern into blue only.

2) Next layer - layer adjust set to drop shadow, and some others effects to give the right highlights. The pattern for the lace knots could be drawn either on this layer or a copy can be adjusted after the fact, which is what I did.

3) Next layer - copy of the above layer BEFORE the effects, so in a sense, the layer above is the copy. But this layer was drawn with a pattern brush... then with the move tool, I dragged it below the layer above to create that shadow effect, and blurred it.

4) Next layer is the flesh color layer - again grey tones are colored only flesh colors here.

5) Bottom layer - this is the initially full grey painting of the shoulders.

It sounds confusing...

But basically I do this: each number is a new layer... numbers are actually in order from the bottom to the top, so the higher the number, the closer to the top it is... yes that is confusing.

1) I always have a white bottom layer which I lock and leave blank for the entire painting... if I need to adjust the canvas size. I change it here and fill in the new areas with white again.

2) Above that, I make a tonal background layer, picking a mid tone. Sometimes I skip this, and go to the next layer, but if I want an easy background, it's a good idea to make this layer and again lock and leave it.

3) This is then the sketch layer. I do this in big broad brushes for covering space, and I am going only for composition, mood and placement. I will chisel away at this area, resizing my brushes for some details, but I usually stay at 100% opacity through out... until I have a full page shape I am happy with... this is done all in greys only.

4) Finally this layer is the main painting. I do details in the face first. Painting right over where I have blocked the face in, in the layer above. The above layer has all my approximate proportions, but this layer will change that depending where the painting goes. The above layer is really rough, there might be some 3-4 greys total, but on THIS layer, I will do all the shadows and highlights, pretty much as tight as I can get it.

5) Sometimes I will keep the face on it's on layer, in case I have to move it, resize it, etc... So on this new layer I might paint the body, or one other detail. These extra layers of paint keep adding up and merging down into 1 layer, until I feel it's time to put the face on the same layer. These layers essentially take the bulk of the painting.

At this point, I am ready to color...

6) I set a layer to color in the layer pull down menu. I start coloring by areas that will all be the same color. And I do it fast and loose... not worrying about staying in the lines. This is because, I want to block in as many of the dominant colors at once on this first layer. So to clean it up, I just erase where it shouldn't be one color... so for instance, I color all the areas that should be yellow, and leave it.

7) Then I make a new layer for the next color, and do it all over again. Erasing to keep it in the shapes, and when everything is right... I flatten all the color layers to one layer.

8) Sometimes I keep the flesh layer seperate, as that is the one that usually needs the most detail.

9) However if I am happy with all the colors now blocked in, including the background (which might be on a separate layer as well) I make a copy of the color layer, and set that to overlay in the layer pull down menu. This INTENSIFIES and brightens the color... Sometimes darkening it in certain areas, sometimes making it too bright. I will slide the opacity if it's very off...

10) This layer is optional, it doesn't always work, but I make a copy of the color layer and set it to multiply, just to see if that helps make any areas I want darker, to be even darker.

11) And now comes the hard part... Above all of this... I do a full color detail layer. I set the opacity of my brushes from 10-100%, depending on the area. But I will clean up areas that need to be darker, match color edges, redraw details, etc... this is pretty much anything goes, but because it is above every layer, this is what the final painting looks like.

This is done with extensive use of the eye dropper tool, which is the alt button on your key board. So I will match colors all over the piece, rather than go back to the final grey area and tighten there... This is kind of the fix it all layer.

I have left out some layers that get merged together, using the merge visible setting. In which case I unhighlight every layer I don't want merged, it looks weird until you click the button, but it is essentially a way to flatten color effects like the color layer, the overlay layer and the multiply layer into 1 layer.

As described above, some details require figuring out how to do that pattern or effect. I don't normally use a layer adjustment layer, but in this case I like the way it helped make it more 3D. I worked out the blurred shadow copied layer on my own, cause I wanted a larger shadow, and didn't want to make an adjustment layer just for the drop shadow.

I like using the pattern brush if I can recall a pattern that might work... otherwise I prefer to use texture brushes, like the case of the background, or I do stippling painted strokes to create texture.

For extreme glows and highlights, I may do a final top layer above it all, and set my brush to screen and about 30-60% opacity, and with a light color, do a swipe over areas I want to glow, like the ankh... sometimes a blur also works in unison with this layer...

And there you have it.

Bobby's drawing secrets have

Bobby's drawing secrets have been revealed!

Lots of layers do the trick for me mostly too. Not only will it prevent having to do stuff again if you make a mistake, they can add a complete new look to the whole picture if you can just manage to find the right setting for it . I only just began to use texture brushes in my drawings. It does give it a nice detailed look indeed. Somehow I'm still not using enough contrast in my drawings (I think, though one could say it's just my style ) so I'll definitely try your way of doing that... see how that goes.

Thanks Bobby!

Sure. I didn't always used to

Sure. I didn't always used to work this way. I have done color paintings that have no grey area. And you pretty much do a speed paint on one layer, and above that do a tight render layer... I have seen videos of artists who pretty much dab in all the colors they want in a specific area and then using blending tools or the smudge brush at various strengths, blend all their colors together...

You can do it that way. However it is much more time consuming.

For instance if you do the face. You have to have the base coat of the flesh, then the natural secondary dark and highlight. As we all know, nothing is just 3 colors, so you're pretty much working the full spectrum when you work in this way. It can be effective and satisfying... sometimes the immediacy of seeing that color next to another is more inspiring.

But I have found with this grey tone coloring method. I block in all the highlights and shadows, and when I color say, all the flesh in one pass. I seldom have to add more than 2 more tones in the detailed rendered layer on top. It saves a lot of time...

But if time is not a problem, you can do whatever is comfortable. I only started working in this method recently. I used to do the speed paint, render thing... but then I took an online workshop class in character concept art. And they will do 10 thumbnails of an idea to start, based solely on shape. Then pick 3 and add grey tones and a loose render. Finally they pick 1 out of the 3, and do 3 variations, till they find 1 shape, 1 idea that speaks to them about their whole initial concept...

Here are some of the stages that I did for my project, which was based on my concept of a Valkyrie: and no I didn't finish it yet... Actually I am still in the pick 3 stage. I've rendered 2, but haven't done the variations yet to the final stage. I only changed the sword to a spear, and other details on this piece, cause I couldn't stop myself. :D

Oh and DD, I wanted to add...

Oh and DD, I wanted to add... texture brushes are great, but they can make you lazy too... the artist who taught this class, Charlie Bowater, whom I idolize... she does finished full tight tight rendered pieces with practically 3 brushes and that's it... none of them textured in the sense of specific brushes they have out there for blood splatters, metal surfaces, rain, clouds... she does it all at 100% opacity set to pen pressure... and it's just amazing make you drool kind of work...

There is also 1 other technique I have found that adds some nice depth. If you are say painting in an ornate design on metal, that requires a harsh highlight.

I like to paint the base tones of the metal shape, the reflective areas, which are usually the mid tone, a single dark on the edges, and some bright highlights here and there.

On a new layer, I like to do the first pass of the pattern... and then I make a copy of it, hide the original version, blur the new version slightly, and then do more tight renders on top of that shape, which because it's blurred, I now use as a guide...

There's also THIS amazing technique using the color dodge setting for your brush (opacity set under 15%), with a mid to dark grey or color, that brightens your initial highlights... check this out:

Oh wow! I like where that

Oh wow! I like where that Valkyrie project is going sofar!
I am still a bit reluctant to start a digital paining by just painting the shape and then go into the details. It's like my brain just can't accept it. It will keep nagging at me to put in at least a little detail... and once I do... I can't stop... ... and before I know it... my quicky turned into a I-worked-too-long-on-this painting once again hehe.

Oh gosh, I truly admire people who can manage all the textures by not using textures! Though I do tend to do that myself. Or atleast try to astablish that. It's doable, really. In theory that is. You just have to study the actual texture of the thing your drawing. It takes time and practise, but at some point, you'll know who to draw many textures. Basically it's like drawing a quick portrait. Just draw the most important lines that hint to that texture... You just have to find the most importaint lines. Oh well.. practise, practise *nods*.

Truth be told I only used a texture brush on one drawing sofar (and for several backgrounds) *giggles* And I haven't even finished it yet..
(click to enlarge, though you can barely see it, I think. Used texturebrushes on the beltstraps and the blue under the grey armor)
What I do mostly is play with the "Density" (I think it's called Jitter in PS) of a brush for a texture-like look. Does that count as a texture brush?

There are so many ways to get a drawing finished! *faints*
In that vid, the artist also uses parts of an image/photograph of the armor and blended that in. That's been done a lot in digital concept art, I noticed. One can't actually call it a painting anymore if an artist does that. Then it's Digital Art, not a Digital Painting. Not that it's a bad thing, not at all ofcourse, cause the result is mesmerizing nontheless!
But if you need stuff quickly, I think that's a very creative way of getting it. Using a mix of digital painting and photoshopping. The program IS called Photoshop afterall *giggles*.

I still consider that

I still consider that painting, if the actual finish is unrecognizable from the source. That is done by the way for 3 reasons, to use the source as inspiration, which is then completely changed. To use it for a color palette... and finally to use it for a texture, that is painted over, but on a subconscious level you know it's there. I've seen better examples of it. I always use reference for armor, shadows on a face, the reason I ask for creators to suggest a celebrity look... It helps not having to make it up, and there are some subtleties from a very well done photograph, that you can't create off the top of your head, well at least I can't. In fact the shadows of one face stay with me from one portrait to the next. I work on a piece and it becomes embedded in my brain, and I can actually draw parts of it over without looking at the original.

Personally I love textures, but they can be overkill very easily, because they are addictive. I stick to clouds, some metal textures, and a brush I sometimes use for hair, but I now know how to do that effectively without a texture brush, it just takes longer. As to the Valkyrie piece... I do plan to finish it, just not sure when. Had I not been lured in here by CR, I probably would have been done by now... but I have a weakness for drawing superheroes, so I will be doing these until I burn out... which might take a while, because everyone's concept is so unique.

Yes there are about 6 different ways to do all the same things in Photoshop, and no 2 artists will do them the same. I even forget to stick to the same steps sometimes, cause you want to paint the good parts in, and well that can get you carried away. IF I was still working in the traditional comic book method, there would not be as much leeway... You'd always have a black layer on top set to multiply, a color layer for the renders under it. A flats layer under that, and then a background layer if any.

You can still do flats for digital painting. I use selections instead, and save those under different labels, usually full body and background, so I can color both without effecting one or the other.

Anyway here is a new piece I am working on for myself, that will be colored entirely different from anything I do in this thread. This is a D&D character I am playing currently in a game I play online via Google + video conferencing and Roll20... she's a drow ft/mu/cleric... This is just the blue line sketch I am currently using for an outline stage. I am re-inking a new drawing from this, and that will then be colored in Painter, using their digital watercolor brushes, which can sometimes look like Copic markers. I will post the finish when I'm done...

Hehehe naughty CR, keeping us

Hehehe naughty CR, keeping us away from the things we were supposed to do first! . Well.. this forum actually made me pick up my drawing again... Finally finished the last CoXso price/commission.. though I have several other drawings that I had lying around and only just started to work on again when this forum popped up... I couldn't resist either *giggles*.

Yeah, the way to a finished digital painting is always an unique ride! I too never do things the same way in every painting. And even if I do stick with some of 'm most of the way, the way can change from one painting to another. Just like that I then found another way to do things . Fun though!

Great lines there! Very nicely detailed even.
Painter has a way to make it copic-like hmm? Interesting!
Personally I'm horrible with picking colors in every traditional way of coloring (I don't know why, but it's true)...so I love the digital versions of traditional coloring.
I'll be keeping an eye out for the fully colored piece!

I wouldn't change a single thing! You nailed it the first try, I just can't believe this was when you were tired o.O !

In CoH Patriot was a Scrapper, a skilled martial artist that would use his speed to close the distant and quickly end a fight before moving to the next foe. The armor you gave him seems perfect, looks lightweight yet strong enough to protect him from most harm so anything bulkier and he'll be a tanker. I really do see him duke it out as Jack Kirby use to draw Cap jumping around everywhere.

I used to work in a more traditional way... using black line, and then coloring it. But I've always loved the look of concept art, and I wanted to move towards that direction someday. I had a break through doing just this kind of work, superheroes, in the summer of 2010.

I joined an art forum right before the release of the DCUO game, and many members were designing their own characters in anticipation. Much like they are doing here for COT. On a whim I decided to paint the free gift art I was going to make for someone, and it just stuck.

With each piece I pushed myself further, and painted more. And I am happy to say I've never looked back, and enjoy this style most of all the other ones I might play around in. I still do some traditional looking pieces, but not for a while now. I prefer this look, and have recently made another breakthrough, in this case for efficiency and speed... so until I burn out. I will be working this way to keep myself " fresh "...

It really is a muscle, doing artwork. When you step away for awhile, there is the same apprehension that you might have forgotten how to do it. It's a known fact that adults who stop drawing as children, when they pick up a pencil again as adults, their brains revert back to the last time they actually drew. So that is why so many adults still draw like kids...

Anyway, that is the long answer... welcome to the forum!

I've been asked to color this

I've been asked to color this one... so not sure if I will color the other piece, as I have a strict 1 piece per person policy... I don't mean to be mean, but I don't really want to burn out, so I am going to limit myself to my output. It was different in the case of Ghost Hack, I was still striving to get to a final I was happy with... but in this case, as much as I want to color the Kirby version... I feel it would be unfair to do it. Sorry all... no offense FP.

Personal Post:

Personal Post:

I don't usually air my dirty laundry, but I feel I have to today, because an odd thing happened yesterday in my personal life. I woke up and my wife was mad at me.

That may sound like a punchline to some, but I am married to the greatest person in the world, and she NEVER gets mad at me, even when I deserve it, even when I am at fault. She is the salt of the Earth, and is so level headed, that she has made me a better person because of who she is... so you can imagine me shaking my head as to why she was mad?

It turns out, it's because of the work I am doing in here.

She told me after I pulled out the information from her finally, that she was mad that I could do all this detailed work for strangers at night, and not do any art for the house?

I should explain, that she is the major bread winner in our household. I am a kept man, and do the occasional freelance piece for her, if she is bogged down with too much on her workload. She knows I can be asked to do that in a pinch. I try to serve as her on call art director, so at any given time if I am drawing, I will be asked to go into her studio to discuss the pieces she is doing. I have NO problem with that, but it does cut into my own stuff, so I work at night when she sleeps.

And truthfully this is all my fault, cause unless someone asks me, when I wake up in the morning. I prefer to draw what I am passionate about... which is this stuff. It's the difference between drawing furniture and drawing beautiful girls in spandex, which would you prefer?

But we make our living doing Stock Art. I have done it before, and I do it when I have an idea that I think I can accomplish... but it's not keeping me up at nights.

Anyway so today, I spent the day drawing 3 stock art pieces. And thanks to a new program, I found I could do them relatively easy... however we've made a deal. I do those pieces for her in the day, and at night I can draw whatever I like. I only got to do the Kirby piece after finishing the other 3... so it was like time off for good behavior. She is not being unreasonable. I just don't think like her... even though I went to school for graphic design, initially it was for illustration, and that was 20 years ago. To think that way again is the last thing on my mind... Not that I am avoiding applying myself... I have just been pushing myself to learn what I love... and maybe that seemed selfish to her.

Anyway... so unfortunately this will limit my output here, and I am going to have to see what I can fit in. It's 4;24 am here. I am a night owl, insomniac so to me this is daylight. Hopefully I will find a nice balance, but if you don't see me for a while, it's because the internet has swallowed my soul... just kidding.

Cheers all!

Bobby

Your honesty is much

Your dirty laundry is much appreciated Bobby! -- eh.. wait....

That indeed is a startling morning .
Drawing what you're passionate about is kindah addictive and wake-up calls are sometimes needed *nods*. Eventhough you don't want to stop drawing what you love, you know you sometimes just have to, to be able to save the day and with that your relationship(s). (I know all about that!)
Balance, indeed, is the trick. A tricky one to get to, but absolutely possible.
I hope you'll find your balance soon Bobby! *hugs*

Umm it's been a long time

Umm it's been a long time coming... one of the main reasons I switched off of black line, was I hated the control I lost with it... lol, people used to tell me what strides I made on COH, and while that is partially true, most of my problem was figuring out how to use Photoshop... now with that new program, which I won't mention here, cause you're tired of me trying to sell it... *coughmischiefcough* I can do lines the way I've seen them in my head...

Anyway, I figured since this is my unofficial swan song, I would finish this one... between you and I, you KNEW I was going to color it.

Liking it is an understatement. I'm overwhelmed by it's sheer beauty and eloquence. Bobby really outdid himself drawing like the late King Kirby that I almost do think Jolly Jack did the piece himself! Can't wait to see where you go next in your art :D

I should clarify CR, this isn't the final, just a sketch idea for myself to get a feel for the character. While I like this, so much detail is lost from the costume, so I may do one more tighter piece for peace of mind... ;) This was done in an hour, to wake me up in the morning, trying to turn around from being a night owl...

By the way, I meant to tell you, I know you like to give 1 away when I offer these... but I don't want you to feel any kind of guilt over that, so consider yourself the recipient of 1 more piece from me (to sum up - 2 for you, 1 for your gift giving nature)... enjoy!

And let me know who's next.

I used the same trick with those metal eye coverings on my Rave Spider and another character's mask. I was surprised not to see it used more often.

The first year she appeared

The first year she appeared in your classic white and red combo outfit, with blonde hair... then one day I made her a redhead, and used the black/blue costume with the white on it... and someone said you look like Spider Woman, so I decided to go for the classic Red, Yellow and Black. And it stuck her last 5 years. She was created in 2006.

If you are talking sunglasses they were called "Galactic" (the really large ones with mirror lenses and angled stems) if goggles from the classic menu they were "Slopes." After those came the "Modern" goggles that were added with the Superscience booster pack and a year or so later the "Resistance" goggles were released with Going Rogue.
LJ's/BrandX's were called eyeplates (or eyeplugs if they had the teacup handles on them). I considered using the single eyeplug on one of Perpetual Fist's costumes but it only gave the option to cover his one good eye or both.
I don't know why you couldn't choose left or right eye but I hope the new avatar builder addresses little oversights like that.

Speaking of which...

Coolness! My first thought was Ninja Run but then I totally thought of Trinity's kick from The Matrix the original.

Heh that is exactly what I was debating, whether have you do my character for both or to keep one and give one away as a gift (you know me well). That's really cool of you to do Bobby, I really appreciate it and it makes that decision super simple.

Sorry for unresponsiveness I've been buried in old computer repairs and crashed hard drives this last week (the good part is most of them are new clients at least and I was able to restore nearly 100% of their lost data) but I do have an order for a $4k forensic machine coming up after Christmas which should be a fun challenge.

Sure thing I'll go take some refs when I take a break later this afternoon. Hey how would feel about taking a crack at Chloe's final form/fifth suit? I really love what you did with her original suit many years ago... it gave me a whole new take on her face and especially her eyes.

Thank you Tatia, flattery will get you everywhere (and some free art)...

CR: Cool, no worries, I know you're very busy. By the way, all is well on my pc front, the new SSD works like a charm... ended up having to pay them for repairs, and it needed a new power supply. But I am more than happy, and got a new external 1TB for my worries... plus I hooked up my 32" LCD TV as my 3rd monitor, and I now have a cockpit to work in, which sits nicely on the new desk the wife bought me for Xmas.

As to Chloe, refresh my memory, and of course send over those reference. Haven't had a chance to go back to your piece yet, doing a show for a friend's comic book shop on the 25th of January, and have about 4 more pieces to finish before then. Here are the first two of six, I am doing the Trinity, and then 3 Avengers...

and

But I will get to him as soon as the holiday is over. I'm also in the middle of another online concept character class, this one to draw a creature of my own, and I've decided on an oceanic mount... kind of a hybrid between, a whale shark, a manta ray, a jelly fish and a chameleon... yup I know how that sounds. But thanks to the teacher's methods, that's what I came up with...

So as you can see I am keeping busy... btw my son was very excited to hear about the new CoT costume creator.... I still have to install it, but his eyes lit up when I told him about it. He immediately said, why, why did they close our game when clearly there was money to be made...

okies, if I don't see everyone before next week, have a great holiday!

Will do. Glad that turned out great (have you tried any of the those extra speed modes of the SSD yet?) and you have a cockpit of monitors to work with, it really helps with productivity... or time wasting depending on your goal.

Awesome and thanks, yeah after the holiday things will cool off a bit and we can all get caught up. Congratz on the comic work as well, I especially like that Batman piece. Keep me posted on how your creature comes along, I'd like to see that.

For the third giveaway piece I'm thinking maybe if you want to do some more of that Kirby-esque line art maybe someone (or multiple someones) can color it up for a truly unique collab piece? It will depend I suppose on which character wins and what style you think is best. I can at least determine (with a contest) who the lucky forumite will be though. It's about time we broke the new forums in with a contest.

Happy Holidays to you and yours as well, Cheers!

Here's a color test I am

Here's a color test I am doing, with a new technique I've just learned from my concept art class... which really helps coloring faster.

( Basically I flat each layer, then I make a new layer over that flat, and using the move tool, or V key, I hold down alt and the layer turns into a mask over the flat layer, this allows me to color only within the flat without loosing the flat layer. I used to flat all on one layer, but then you have to select each color as you go, and do the steps above... I find this works better for me, in the end, everything is flattened anyway for the final... )
