So I'm writing a super hero story and I kinda wanted to be able to put theres characters into some kind of classification of sorts. I kinda liked CoH's origins. They seemed to fit kinda nicely but things seemed to get weird with stuff like Psionics. Using CoH's style. It seems like it lands in Mutation but my friend argues that psychic abilities arent mutation as its understood that humans have a sort of natural psychic ability. So if I had a character that say is like Psylocke. So would the character get to still end up in Natural?
In Marvel they have their Mutation Level Scale. Has 6 Categories. (Alpha, Beta, Delta, Epsilon, Gamma, Omega)
Champions Online places everything in Power sets. So you have Energy Projection, Technology, Martial Arts, Mentalist, Brick Power, Mystic. But you can just grab from everything and still really just have to come up with an Origin for your character.
Does DC have some kind of category system where the characters can be placed?
I just feel a little confused on it all. For my universe I would like to have some kind of category set up for the heroes and villains.

if you're establishing your own setting....
....then establish your own setting. You are God, in your world. You define what is, and what isn't.
As long as you can justify the details of your setting to your audience..... you're golden.

DC has three "origins" (unless it's changed since I last played ^_^)
1: Metahuman, for those whose powers are because they aren't quite human.
2: Magic, for those whose powers are mystical/divine in origin
3: Tech, for those who use all those wonderful toys!
Your origin (along with your hero/villain alignment) determines who your mentor is and some missions are origin specific.
As a classification of power origins, it's a fairly simple system, and it's usually easy to see who goes where. I hadn't known previously that Lex was a metahuman, though ^_^

Yes. Natural worked as a "catch all" for anything that didn't fall into Magic, Mutation, Science or Tech.
My Mind/Kinetics Controller, Ms Givings, was a Natural origin.
My Gravity/Trick Arrow Controller, Topheavy Gs, was a Tech origin (who invented gravity control technology as a defense against the onset of puberty).
My Martial Arts/Super Reflexes/Soul Mastery Scrapper, Redlynne, was a Natural origin who could Moonbeam and Soul Storm.

Psylock is a mutant, so would be mutant. That doesn't mean your character has to be a mutant.
The main problem with games like this trying to "pigeonhole" every character into a handful of Origin-type catagories is that there'll always be unique character concepts that'll never neatly fit into any of them. This is one of the main reasons CoH systematically retreated from their original Origin ideas and ended up making the system be as "origin-less" as possible.
I suspect CoT will follow CoH in this regard and avoid making anything in the game hinge directly on anything like Origins. It simply causes more trouble than it's ultimately worth. If you want to "roleplay" being a Mutant then go right ahead - there's no reason why a game like CoT should force us to accept a strict/narrow definition of what that means to anyone.

the OP isn't talking about this game, in particular..... they are looking for ideas on categorizing of powers for their OWN project.

Would've been nice in CoH to pick two origins. I know my main is a mix of science/supernatural...supernatural usually being called magic by many players, even if it would fall under natural for many of their origins.
well, it would be nice if Origins weren't tied to characters the way they were in CoX..... and instead had a much broader list that could be adopted as you played... serving some other function in the game or game world (like allowing different branches of end game content, or some such)
then, have the game clearly define its own terms....
like, if a "magic" origin encompassed everything from artifacts and spell books to posessions and extra-dimensional beings...... have it say so
if "natural" origin only entailed HUMANS who had trained extensively.... say that.
or whatever....
in any case, Origin was so utterly vestigial for 90% of the game, i never cared much what origin I picked, and just whatever struck my fancy

Yea it just seems more like i'm going to have to come up with my own classification for the heroes in my universe.

as well you should, Ell.....
unless your writing for a particular universe, you should ALWAYS establish your own credibility. Your readers will walk into your setting with enough lag (preconceptions about elements of your story) to go around, you don't need to compact the problem by borrowing from other worlds...

Seeing Kryptonians or any aliens who's abilities where described as being par for the course for their species, just boggled me, when they didn't pick Natural.
:p
yeah.... natural is one of those crap designations... "natural to whom?"
I'm 5'7", Dunking a basketball isn't "natural" for me... but give me a few more inches and POW... dunk master.
and then we try to use other "catch-all" discripters like "olympic-level".... HAH.... green arrow can do what an olympic-level archer couldn't do in his/her wildest dreams.... while falling off a building....blindfolded.
....but he's definitely a "natural" character...
or howabout anyone from the Wanted series of GNs, who can slow time and bend bullets because they've got special edition adrenaline.... totally natural hero, but can break the laws of physics?
why bother having a discription at that point? why bother using arbitrary classifications at all? I mean, in Marvel, it matters because mutation is a tool for themes of Othering.... but otherwise?
The ONLY reason Origins matter, in comics... is because it defines what enemies you face. Ironman and Spiderman go up against "sciencey" enemies, while X-men fight Mutants, and Dr. Strange fights off Demons and magical assaults on reality....
Origin defines the stories told with a given character..... but in an MMO, the only character that matters, is "the world"... your origin is nice flavor text, but you will still face the full gambit of enemy types, mission types, world-ending threats, and street thugs....
In an MMO..... Origin is nothing more the flavor text.... stroking your creative ego to make you feel a touch more unique....
but functionally it makes no difference in the game world.
(though, it would be nice if it did.)
