I almost never use a black line anymore, not since 2010... I paint shapes in grey tones. And then refine those shapes in multiple layers into details. Sometimes all that is done in color alone. Lately I have been using a grey scale first, a complete piece in black and white, and then using 1 layer in color mode under the blacks if any, but under my grey scale... and then above that color layer I may sometimes also use an overlay layer which makes certain colors brighter. If all else fails, I make a layer above all of it and paint directly in full color. or eye dropped colors from the original...

have an all white background is to just use the Magic Wand Tool [/color][/b][/size][/font]

[color=#c95f02][b][size=15][font=Palatino Linotype]and click the background and any enclosed white spaces (like the
space between her tail and leg and the space between her arm and torso etc).
Then use "Inverse" which is {menu > Select > Inverse} or click {Shift+Ctrl+I} and this will invert the selection
(instead of the background now everything except the background is selected) so only the object is selected.[/color][/b][/size][/font]
[color=red][size=17][b]Step2: Duplicate the object onto another layer.[/color][/size][/b]

and it should bring up a duplicate layer (Layer1) with no background.

[color=#c95f02][b][size=15][font=Palatino Linotype] One simple way to do this is to select the figure in the new layer by holding Ctrl and clicking the on "Layer1" and then click {Ctrl+U} to bring up the Hue/Saturation adjustment window and move the "Lightness" slider all the way to the left (down to -100) and click the "Okay" button.

[color=red][size=17][b]Step4: Knock over the duplicate layer.[/color][/size][/b]
[color=#c95f02][b][size=15][font=Palatino Linotype]Choose the "Free Transform" {Edit > Free Transform} or {Ctrl+T} tool and then while holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard click on the top/center control point and "knock over" the shadow layer to where you want the shadow to fall and then let go of Ctrl. Use the other control points to move the shadow's feet around until things line up convincingly.
NOTE: Holding Ctrl keeps the proportions exact while you move control points, not holding Ctrl allows you to warp and stretch the shadow a bit to pull it into position but don't distort it too much. You want the proportions to stay as close to the figure as you can.

and click/drag again until you get the gradient you want.

shadow that are on top of the figure

A simple way to do this is with Gaussian Blur. {menu > Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur} or {Shift+Ctrl+B}

Funny cuz lately I do it the other way around. I put in the flats and add layers of shading in black (and do the same for highlights with white) on new layers and play with the opacity of those layers, instead of trying to shade the pictures with simular colors I used earlier. Perhaps I should make a tutorial on that aswell someday...[/color][/b][/size][/font]

I'm using an older program, Photoshop CS4. I use it exclusively. It suites my needs and I am trying to streamline my process so I'm focusing on just this program for now. I'm sure I'll experiment more when I get up to speed.

I have Adobe CC (and CS6) and it's actually pretty cheap - especially if you're using more than one product like Illustrator and Photoshop. If you're a student - like my son it's really cheap. About $19.99 a month. Still not free... but if you plan on doing a lot of work it's 100% worth it.
It also does not require an always on connection of any kind. In fact - you can even stop paying completely and your stuff stays with you since the cloud portion (if you use it) is actually on your hard drive. It is sync'd to the cloud account but it doesn't vanish.
As for the rest - no it doesn't actually require any connection to the internet except for your payment and the cloud functions. All your tools - Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Acrobat - everything - works regardless of a connection. I've used it on planes and all over with no connections.
Some other software that is - if you haven't had a chance to play with it that's really good is Autodesk's [url="http://www.sketchbook.com/"] SketchBook Pro. [/url] It's not quite Photoshop but it's a huge step above say GIMP or some of the other freebies or near freebies. I think it's currently around $49 for the pro version and if I recall it's free for students, along with some other Autodesk products. Like I said it isn't Photoshop - but I often open up something in PS, create the sketch work and because the Copic markers are actually that close to the real thing... open up my PSD in Sketchbook, do my colors and work.
If you're on a budget it's definitely a consideration.

Yeah, to remove confusion about my comments...
I am certain - that if you do not pay your bill, when it's time to 'shut you off' you get nag screen that counts down for 30 days before it stops working. I am 110% certain of that - lol. So technically - you get 60 days from when your payment is due to pay the ... I think I'm paying $39 for the 'regular' FULL Adobe CC. You can get Photoshop alone for anywhere for around 19 a month. My son got his in high school and it costs us $19 for his full version of CC.
As to the 'what happens when CS7 comes out' scenario.... couple things, I can confirm for you that as a Creative Cloud user... I'm already using it, so I don't need to upgrade to CS anything - that's the point of paying the $39 or $19 a month - you don't have to pay for the upgrades and you get them as they're available to fix issues. I've had what 3 or for updates in the last year to Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and Dreamweaver. And these weren't just maintenance or bug fix packs. Actual features added - like big stuff.
But say, you do own CS6 - which from what I understand is the last stand alone version. If you own it and you have a legit serial number yes, you can always use it and mine works fine even when my CC version was locked out. They even update maintenance pack bug fixes on it.
But if you're wondering if you can buy a version of CC, not pay and have it work afterwards, no it doesn't work that way. :) That said, I work in software. I know security designs. I can think of 3 exploits to the system Adobe uses, so if there isnt' crack out there I'd be pretty shocked. Their security on this is a bit laughable - not that it's a joke, just that the tech is very out of date in it's design. It like a Maseratti with a 'Club' as it's only security system.
And that also said... there's no reason for cracking it. Like I said, you can get it dirt cheap and if $20 a month is too much - there's alternatives. Autodesk Sketch Pro I discovered when my Photoshop was an expense I couldn't work with one month. When I got back at work and could afford it - I bought a copy of it to keep. $49 and It does everything GIMP and the others do, works with my Tablet and a lot of other features.
Found out that my Son - as a student (and this applies to College or High School) could get CC full version for $19 a month, and ALL of the Autodesk products for free for $36 months - but some, like Sketchbook Pro are just Free-free. And I know that because I've actually pushed past my limit and had the product shut down.
Now, I should also point out that you CC membership allows you to set it up on more than one computer so you can literally 'use it anywhere' your laptop, your workstation, etc. and just pop between them. You have the license - not your computer. There is a limitation to I think 3 systems but... that's pretty nice. I know I have a copy of it on my workstation at home, one on my laptop and one on my work system usually and just bounce between them and it's legit.
(Oh and I do not work for Adobe... I, ironically, actually do work for a lot of their competitors from time to time. So this is no fan boy post. It's just my experience.)
If you're on a budget - and you're trying to get your career going in design or development, there's actually a ton of free or near free resources available out there. I may start a thread here and just post all of them I know of and tips for how to get into and work in software design. People really have no idea how much stuff is out there for them.
Everything from brushes to software to ... stuff to run a business, how to run a business, training. A lot of stuff out there most people don't know about.
I pay $19.99 a month as well. They sometimes offer this deal IF you also have a legit copy of one of their other programs. So it's not just open to students. I have Illustrator CS5 from a previous Ebay purchase, which I got for a song, under $275 for a full version. I have since upgraded it for free to CS6, AND, because Adobe was having some New Year's promotion, I got the Photoshop CC version for a full year at that price. I did A LOT of chatting with their online rep before I went ahead... so if you pester them a bit, you can get a deal.
Normally it is $39 a month if you have no previous versions of their software.
