"buyout" a name

So the two sides of the coin on the name game....
either no lock on the names and you get a lot of "Deathstalker" heroes.
or no lock on the names and you get a lot of "Deathstalker....Deathst4lker.....DeathStalker" based on whatever the rule is going to be for caps,numbers,spaces... you get the picture....

what if...
as a funding thing closer to mid betas you run a deal....
you can buyout a name.
That name is registered to your account, bought and payed for.
Really want to lock down your heroes name, buy it. Otherwise it will be open (or maybe bought by someone else!)

Now personally I never had an issue with CoH naming policy, I liked it. I also hated CO's naming policy... to the point I almost immediately uninstalled. Other things caused that to happen =P

What I suggest doesn't make me 100% happy, so I figure it wont make anyone 100% happy, which is why its my suggestion. A compromise should leave everyone feeling a tiny bit cheated from everything they wanted.

If I really really care about my name... I buy it.
If a name gets bought after I have named my hero that, my hero is grandfathered in with the name.
So if 1 year into the game someone buys "Archangel" and you happen to have an Archangel, it stays, there just won't be anymore.

Should raise money at the right price point ... lots of it.
Should let players be happy they have a registered guaranteed name that if registered at beta stages will be a unique hero name. If registered later on, at least it will be a limited name.

Those players who don't really care if they share a hero name, or what they name their hero... won't care about the system either way.

If a player really wants to camp 14 names... they will have to pay the cost to do so.
So it should cut down a bit on that. I know I would buy 1-5 names depending on the price point. After that Pretty much any name will do for random alt nights that I want to test a power set.

Devil's advocate here.

Devil's advocate here.

This system being implemented might attract the attention of the worst kind of troll: One with money. Some of us have existing characters here on the forums so if such a system would be implemented then we potentially could lose access to their names just because someone found it funny. TSW had that problem with a small amount of members when the name reservation came around for founders.

Also, sometimes you're stuck for a name and see only a certain one fitting your character. On CO i have Cryo, my glacier. Not original at all, but it fit. Sure enough I ran into 2 other Cryos.

Of course, the CO system has it's problems but it's the best option we have now. One thing I do think should happen is the ability to name multiple characters the same thing, just so when Mastermind comes out I don't have to delete the Corrupter version of Lord Nightmare just to use his name for the Mastermind version (and yes.. I hate having to use underscores, dashes, periods.. etc.).

Revenge is motivation enough. At least it's honest...

No offense Steamtank but I

No offense Steamtank but I don't like that naming policy at all. It would really suck to want a name, only to have it bought out by someone else. I think generally people try to be a lot more creative with their characters, especially main characters. I don't think CO's naming policy is necessarily bad, but it can look bad when people come up with Batmaaaan2345 and the like. I have a name that I always use, Ravonos. In GW2 this name is taken, and it took me a while to come up with a new name for my main, and I'm still not 100% happy with it. I would be very upset if someone bought out my name before I could use it, even though I've been using that name for the last 10+ years. As much as you hated CO's naming policy is how I would feel if someone bought out a name that, for the most part, I consider mine. I came up with it a long time ago, and for a long time I haven't really had trouble getting it.

It would also open the gate

It would also open the gate for people with money buying up a whole bunch of cool names and trying to sell them back to others. I don't know how they could do it, but they'd probably figure it out.
I would rather have exclusivity; If I had Deathstalker and some other idiot had De4thSt4lker, everyone would know he's a sham.

While I'm not going to be one

While I'm not going to be one of those people that gets upset if I see another character with the same name as one of my own, I would be upset if someone bought out a name I really wanted for a character. I usually think pretty hard about what I name my characters, the name usually has some meaning that is related to the character. Very disappointing when you think long and hard about a name and then you have to start all over again.

On the other hand, I I did see someone in the game with the same name I would likely start thinking about a new name. I may or may not change my name but I'd still think about ways to make my more unique.

And one of the points above about someone buying out a name just to try to sell it to a person that really wants it is valid. Maybe you don't remember, but this happened in CoX. It is uncool for someone to squat on a name in order to make a buck.

In the case of seeing my name there are two possibilities
1) The player thought about a name and came up with the same one, okay, it's gonna happen.
2) The player saw me, saw my name and then ran off to create a character with the same name because they thought it was cool. This person I feel sad for.

This would just simply lead

This would just simply lead to "Name-farming" with individuals or groups buying up all kinds of names in the hopes of selling them off at higher prices to other people. In other words - if you don't like the "gold/INF sellers" or "spawn/loot campers" this would be even worse. All in all a bad idea.

The naming convention they are planning to use is the best all-around; your account/global name is unique, while you can choose whatever name you want for your character. People get the name they want - while the chances of running into another character with the same name are relatively low.

Are we on a slippery slope

Are we on a slippery slope yet? I don't want to be nickel and dimed for every transaction, move, etc. It would be too much like real life with all the taxes :-/ I for one don't like the CO naming policy either, but I did like the idea CoH had for awhile where if you only played for a few months and left for a year or so you lost your name. I didn't get every name I wanted in CoH, but it's policy allowed me to come up with some very good ones. I was amazed at the names others were coming up with still all those years later after a gazillion toons had been created. No policy will be perfect, but CoH had a pretty good one

Agreed. A reasonable activity level expectation would be okay. I went back to my DCUO game after a long hiatus and found all my names had "-NF" added to the end of them. I think that had to do with a version upgrade or something, but there you are. I could still play them, but I couldn't change the name. That was troublesome. I'd rather lose the name, but have a mechanism for re-naming.

If they had real money, why would they have to sell them in game?

I for one love this idea of buying out names.

World of Warcraft did that too. Great system! Maybe even a yearly name wipe from inactive accounts would suffice.

I took a 4 year break from WoW, and returned to the game, to find my character name...

Still the same.
