The second set of names, if I understand correctly, are going to be referencing the secondary choice of power set that the AT has access to.
So, we know that Ranger is Range/*...but what are the others.
I assume that */Manipulation is in there somewhere, and if I had to guess I'd think it was in Hunter, since that evokes images of snares and tactics.
Partisan...is that */support? Somewhere in here there should be the Corrupter similar role, but is this one it...or did I mix up hunter and partisan?
Gunner...could it be you are actually going to offer Range/Range? Cool if so, but I get if you plan on */assault instead.
Well, I'm probably off, and these are likely subject to change, but I would love to hear what we're currently dealing with.
I'm assuming gunner is blaster, hunter is maybe scrapper and partisan is controller? Or something similar to that.. Even though it's early I hope they release some rough descriptions of the classes and secondaries! ^_^

They already released all of the Primaries here: http://cityoftitans.com/comment/16221#comment-16221
With that we only got the secondaries for the Stalwart.
So, no, Scrapper can't be a Ranger, since it is part of the Enforcer (melee/*) group. Controller is part of Commander (control/*)
At least you're offering suggestions though, so I can't fault you that :)
Gunner, if I recall, is Ranged/Defense. The much-asked for mage-tank is here.
The world is a mess and I just ... need to rule it.
RANGER -- RANGED DAMAGE
Hunter -- Ranged / Manipulation
Partisan -- Ranged / Support
Gunner -- Ranged / Defense

A curious possibility could be a Power Armor set.. repulsor rays, miniguns, built in missiles. >.> I know Champs has one (Well done too for once) and people might be expecting CoT to have the same. ALBIET without the ability to use more than one attack at once (considering this is going to be a slower paced game)

Wasn't really wowed...,
- ...by CO's power suit ability to fire off a lot of powers all at once...sure, it was nifty..but such could be equally established by some kind of 'nuke' power (...which was essentially what it was...). I'd leave that complication off for later as such is more specified, rather than essential, to overall game play in general.
Curiously enough, it was a realization while playing the power armor set that finally made me give up on CO (in addition to rather limited content and lack of updates in those first six months). IIRC I was at around level 24 when I realized that I had all the powers I'd want and would be using in this power set, so for the next 16 levels there would be no noteworthy change for my character.
It's an idea with potential (activate up to three or four powers simultaneously to achieve different buff / debuff / damage combinations) and I do love me some of that "fire all cannons" feeling.

Would you believe that's an actual power now, Fez? And one that got a lot of players upset because it has the potential to be gamebreakingly OP?

You'll have to elaborate, Nightmare. I stuck with CO for six months after launch, then stuck my nose back in at some point after they introduced F2P, laughed at their model, and have largely put it out of my mind since.

Click ability that shows you firing repulsor rays, a MASSIVE minigun (way bigger than the actual "Minigun" power) and micro missles all at once. It deals (at base with no gains from stats and such) 900+ DPS at rank three. Add in how at endgame you usually do twice that after gains (even in tank role), that's 1800 damage a second. For 5 seconds. So 9000 damage overall.
NOW Let's factor in that a lot of people like to boost their crit rate and severity to... massive levels. Lowest you see is about 60% severity. If every hit crits (which is common nowadays) that's 14400 damage. Highest is about 120%. Every hit crits, that's 19800.
NOW.. let's say you wanted to be a real jerk and used an active offense. We'll take Ice Sheathe which increases damage and critical severity. Rank 3 is 60% extra damage and 24% extra crit sev. So 9000 + 60% is 14400, the same as the lower crits. The lower crits get to be 84% now, so if all those crit, it's 26496. Higher crits get to be 144%.. all those hit, it's 35136 damage.
Congrats.. you've officially felled most everyone in PvP and have eradicated all enemies but legendaries and above. However your power has a 90 second cooldown. Of course, you were probably smart enough to stat cooldown reduction so you can do this once more in about 50 seconds, making legendaries a trivial challenge. Not even going to mention the math involved with offensive passives and debuffs..

If I read Update 12 correctly, it looks like we will have the equivalent of a Corruptor available at launch (i.e. Ranger Partisan). The Ranger Hunter seems to be the Blaster, and the Ranger Gunner is something completely new, though appears to be a Tankmage (Ranged/Defense).
Though, with the Mastery part of it, sounds like there will be a lot of combinations available. I am eager to see how everything will balance out, and how many of each general combo we will begin to see. I know it is all speculative right now, subject to change, etc., I just hope that, with that many combinations going on across all of the Classifications, we can find suitable balances without having to change the initial idea/plan too much.

"All I have to do is hit you lots of times without getting hit myself. I've already won, you just don't know it yet." -Surgepoint
I see the potential Defense of a Ranger Gunner...,
- ...be close to what can be attained, approximately, by a Scrapper or Brute...but nowhere near the Defense of a Tank. After all, the Primary is Ranged Damage...not Defense. For those looking for a more rugged Defense with Range Damage - you would probably be better off choosing a Stalwart Bastion who, while lacking some degree of Ranged Damage potential, redeems this limitation with greater Defense and increased Melee Damage potential. A Ranger Gunner would be for those who simply want to stay back and range and -BLAST-!...safe in the knowledge that the return strike probably won't cause them to face plant or suffer from some kind of inhibiting status effect like immobs and holds. Still, being a Ranger...their durability is not exactly sterling, so a Gunner takes a significant risk when drawing too much fire. Getting surrounded by mobs greatly reduces the Rangers effectiveness...especially regarding cone effect attacks, though AOE attacks affecting location or target can help resolve this complication, freeing up the need for melee capability for the most part (...though lengthy recharge times and endurance costs make AOE's a poor substitute...).
That would be quite awesome.
My first CoH character was an energy/devices blaster. I've a weakness for the powered armor theme. (I still get a little weak in the knees when I think back to Bubblegum Crisis. >.> ) For the most part it went well enough, until I reached Croatoa. Those Red Caps... even against groups of three rascals I sometimes had to use hit and run tactics because it was the worst of both worlds: they hit like trucks and my blaster made a Fabergé egg look robust by comparison. That experience made me shelve blasters. The thought of going about as a hero who had to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat did not appeal to me. I'm looking forward to the Iron Man type, who can keep going despite taking a few hits.

The same...,
- ...though I found Defenders having somewhat as much difficulty...depending on the Power Set, of course. About the only time I could handle those Red Caps was with my Brute...and she tore through them so fast, I was done with the Croatoa before I knew it. Then again, by that time...she has Whirlwind, Handclap, KO Blow , Air Superiority and Hurl (...with Footstomp following soon after...). Red Caps didn't do so well when they're being knocked around or stunned... ^_^
I am so excited that Partisan -- Ranged / Support is at launch as I played mostly corruptors and trollers .
I hope to see storm and poison at launch or in updates following soon after launch, and very interested in what kinda support options are gonna be offered
Heh, I always wondered why everyone would moan and grown about CoT, Carnies, and Malta and never say anything about Red Caps, they were by far the worst faction to face off against. I'll take earth mages illusionists and sappers any day over those knife wielding maniacs.
I'm quite interested to see what values gunners end up with for their defensive powers. I figure that it's going to be lower than the melee classes and I'm ok with that. If I can crank out decent DPS and take a couple solid hits I'll be happy.

I'm very interested to see what can be done to make sniping and other tactical blasting strategies more diverse and useful than what we had in CoH, given CoT's new environments and mission types.
Maybe I liked Red Caps, but then I -was- mostly flying up here...
blasting, debuffing, KB'ing, dodging arrows, and laughing...

I built blast-trollers and/or hover-blasters. Those little buggers were either immobilized, held, or just too far below me to hit me with anything other than the occasional arrow. Oh, how I miss Flash Freeze on my Ice/Ice/Cold blaster...

Actually, one of the things that made them so deadly was they were proficient at range and melee. Their arrow were not token attacks. Their melee was more potent than their bows, but I've been left a pincushion more than once by them.

I have a bit of a silly question. I've gotten used to in most mmos that "rangers" classes have to use a pet. Will the class in this game be like CoH's and make it like a blaster (no pet)?
I love archers but hate that I keep having to keep a dog with me all the time. I miss just sniping things.
Yes. Actually, some of the player base has been pushing to change the name of this archetype precisely because, to many players of other MMOs, "ranger" means something different that what this archetype will actually be.
There will be few pets in the basic power sets of this archetype, if any. First and foremost, you are a ranged attacker, so you will be able to "just snipe." For your secondary powers, you will have a choice between an armor set, a support set, or a "manipulation" set (i.e. most likely a hodge-podge of powers in each set ranging from minor control to melee abilities). In CoH terms, this gives us:
-Ranged Damage/Armor (called a Gunner in this game, no CoH equivalent)
-Ranged Damage/Support (Corruptor, or a Partisan in this game)
-Ranged Damage/Manipulation (Blaster, or Hunter in this game)
As a ranger, unless you have a vanity pet, the presence of pets will most likely be a non-issue.
For more info on how certain archetypes from CoH will appear in this game, you can see this chart.

I call dibs on being able to mock the first person who complains about their Ranger not having a pet in game. ;)
Experience is something you gain after you need it.
Yeh i think by ranger they mean Ranged-attack User. Not Hunter from WoW.
Could always rename em pewpewer. :)

I got my gaming start with D&D (the blue and red boxes, thankyouverymuch), so to me the ranger has always been more the wilderness-oriented loner and ranged attack guy. They could be quite good at handling animals and even have animals as followers, but that was entirely optional.

Challenges Redlynne to make a Ranged DPS character with a costume like that image when the Avatar Creator is released!
And lets not waste this opportunity to educate the general MMO public on the fact that one name can mean different things based on the genre.
Medieval Setting Ranger = wilderness huntman, often with a pet
Modern/Future Setting Ranger = armed forces person with a gun. Rarely seen with a pet dog, owl, walking tree, etc.

I don't think many people outside the US would think of that definition first, though, or possibly at all. To me, it's 'D&D character class with pets', or 'person who works in a park', or even 'Scottish football team', but not military personnel.
I actually thought it had been picked as a slightly tortuous analogy to tanker, defender or scrapper

"Slightly tortuous" = "Copyright-infringement avoiding"? :-)

What comes to my mind when I see Ranger is a soldier, as in Army Ranger. That was what kind of what my main was modeled after.
I generally dislike the classification "Ranger", it is so overused in MMOs, not to mention I think of a park ranger not the cool army ranger. :/ Oh well.
