So, Epic.

So, Epic.

I know CoT have a decent relationship with Epic and were an early adopter of their engine. That relationship seems to have been really beneficial.

Lately, Epic has been getting a lot of attention for their anti-consumer practices. They want a bigger slice of the digital distribution pie, and are trying to muscle their way in by forcing exclusivity deals with all the money they made from fortnite. This has been causing some rage even among people that aren't overly in love with steam since the epic platform has been shown to have major problems and lack important features.

I'm all for competition and I do think Valve has been coasting on a near monopoly for too long. They've since started stepping up their game to match features offered by discord and other services.

The main issue here is Epic isn't trying to offer something to compete with steam (or other platforms) they're just trying to make them worse (by denying games for X months). This is something that has been common practice among big console companies but is coming as something of a shock to primarily PC gamers that aren't used to it.

So my question is basically: Will the friendly relationship MWM has with Epic impact their decisions when it comes to delivery and platform choices? Are they going to be bought into an exclusivity deal?

I didn't think it would be a big deal since these decisions seem to be getting made purely by suits looking at projected profits, and a volunteer studio doing a passion project that isn't going to make AAA money anytime soon might fly totally under the radar. I imagine if MWM had ties with people at Epic it would likely be those that actually worked on the engine and were excited about having people tinker with it.

Just curious.

IIRC, MWM is mainly

IIRC, MWM is mainly developing CoT just for the PC at the moment. Anything for the consoles/tablets/etc. is going to be secondary and/or post-launch. Also not entirely sure MWM is going to initially bother with Steam or any other third-party distribution platforms.

Basically as you point out I think we're mostly going to "fly under the radar" of those shenanigans for the time being.

Yeah I think Lothic has the

Yeah I think Lothic has the right of it here. If I remember correctly I think I've seen mention of MWM designing their own launcher. But even if true the use of it would be their choice. I'm also confident that MWM is taking all things into consideration to fit the needs of the game and customers.

i can understand why people

i can understand why people may be upset over times exclusives. Personally, it doesn’t bother me.

Consoles have been doing this for years.

Only a few people seem to understand that M through Steam, Valve caters to large AAA companies. People think that since indies have an easy in to submit games that Vavlve is indie friendly.

The truth is, they aren’t. And there is a lot to break down to understand why. From their disutubutor’s cut structure, to how they choose to display games, to how easy it is to manipulate review scores; all makes it exceedingly difficult for indie companies to succeed on steam.

The ones people can point out are the exception and a fraction of the games on their platform. Most indies don’t see a profit from Steam sales. Thst’s telling.

I know that we aren’t using Steam for disruption plans at this point.

I've always assumed the team planned to use an independent launcher. Which I support.

Not even all the "big name AAA companies" deal with Steam. Case in point I've been playing Fallout 76 for the last several months using Bethesda's own proprietary launcher without a single problem related to it. I mainly care about playing games - I couldn't really care less what launcher I use to get access to them. *shrugs*

I'm glad someone else pointed that one out because I wouldn't want to get the reputation for "heckling" the Devs around here. ;)

We are using our own launcher

We are using our own launcher. That is the only thing we will distribute through any third-party at this time. I'm the principle person behind that launcher. As I've said elsewhere a draft launcher was our first piece of code - and I'm the one who wrote it. If I can get permission I'll try to make it available for the curious. The design is long obsolete but it's a good nostalgia piece.

Actually, this is the sort of thing that ought to be memorialized in game with an Exploration Badge.

Somewhere in the game, there is a leaky steam pipe where a plot to ruin Titan City was averted.
Everything after that is just Fluff Text™ and ad copy.
The Wiki page for this badge can then link back to Tannim's post in this thread ... and a good laugh can be had by all.

So long as it was never

So long as it was never slated for Steam (Which appears to be the case), I see no issue with Epic. Epic utilizing CoT would be great for CoT imo. I doubt it would happen.

Epic is notorious. If another game was on its' way to Epic, the entire gaming industry and fans will take notice, because it is Epic (& a crowd funding project at that). Phoenix point got all kinds of press after they went the way of Epic. CoT would get the good kind of press because they never promised a Steam release, to my knowledge

When Epic mentions your name, you will be the talk of the town until they mention someone else's. Great way to say superhero mmos are back.

As a child, I thought my name was handsome, cause that is what everyone called me.

i won't mind if they use epic

i won't mind if they use epic as a 3rd party exclusive as long as i can get the launcher from the main site.

i have tried the epic store and it is not something that is ready for me to use.

Shout out to a fellow Vault Dweller.

Anyways, for me I personally prefer GOG for game distribution where possible. I like their lack of DRM getting in the way. But I'll use others if the game is worthy and the launcher isn't obnoxious.

Reality is what I make it

That could be a neat idea only if people are aware it's ont the actual one and will not looks like it :) It could give people a sense of touching it, something concrete to believe in, even if it's just a draft :)
