So I know Champions online has a problem when it comes to black, white and gray power animations like lightning, fire and other power effects. Will COT have these problems too, or will I be able to create Shadowfire Master Of The Gray Flame?

I've already messed with black smoke in tge character creator. It looks just fine.

I believe that would large depend on the actual effect itself and its inherent transparency.
As for fire specifically I wouldn't know, but Warlocc could you check on that? I don't think smoke would be close enough in terms of transparency to give a good indication how fire, lightning, and similar would pan out on the gray-scale side of effects coloring.
You say CO had a "problem" with greyscale power animations. Does CO simply not allow any of their powers to be colored that way? That seems strange considering that even CoH allowed the full range of white-grey-black power animations under its power customization system. I had several characters in CoH that had both fully black colored and fully white colored powers that looked fine.
Basically as far as CoT goes I'd be shocked if we had any power color choice restrictions like that.
I suppose depending on how CoT handles its colors that some effects might like look "bad" if you only use greyscale colors. But even if that's the case a player should have the choice to use those colors regardless.

Last time I checked on CO grey scale was out. In the forums they said it had to do with the basic code of the game, if I remember correctly. Haven't been on CO in more than half a year, things could have changed.

Yeah I only played CO for around the first six months or so after it launched so any "first hand knowledge" I have of the game is super out-of-date by now.
Still it sounds amazingly weird for there to be any "arbitrary color restrictions" like that in any game like this. As blacke4dawn mentioned earlier maybe it has something to do with "transparency" or other graphics characteristics. Regardless that's a pretty bad "problem" that I hope/assume CoT will not suffer from.

There's not a ton of effects in the builder just yet, but everything that's there has the full color palette and it looks okay.
Considering this is still an early build I'm tinkering with, that's promising.
Black obviously doesn't stand out like other options, but it works.

That's good to hear. Whether certain colors "look good or not" needs to be something the players get to judge for themselves. Arbitrary color restrictions shouldn't exist in a game like this.
Sure black colored powers/auras can look "subdued" or "murky" on a screen but that would be sort of the point if you were playing a ghost or vampire or some-such. Again players need to be the judge of what looks good for their own character concepts as much as reasonably possible.

That was issue 22? The penultimate update? (Though I understand none of the playerbase knew this at the time.)
And (sorry to be going off on a sidetrack for a bit) they were releasing new mid-level content! At a time when World of Warcrack, preparing for Mists of Pandaria, had effectively abandoned any new content other than high-level content, unless you count the tutorial-level content for the new race...
No wonder you guys all miss CoX.

Yep they were just starting to put the beta version of Issue 24 out on the Test Server when word came that the game was going to be shut down. As with most CoH Issues it was going to have a bunch of good stuff in it - I distinctly remember some good costume item updates I was looking forward to and had already created some new costumes on the Test Server in anticipation of that.

WoW: (And all the games copying that MMO business model)
1. Raid incessantly, hoping that the shiny bits will randomly drop for you, only to have them all become obsolete with the next expansion and level cap increase.
2. Try to convince yourself you're not stuck on a combination treadmill/slot machine.
3. Lather, rinse, repeat.
------
CoH kept providing new content all over the level range, you didn't have to raid (though you could) to get the good stuff or to look good, and you could find your own style of fun, whatever that might be.
Man, do I ever miss it.

And to tie back to the OP... As others have said, it's hard to imagine that there would be any problems with black/white/grey under the Unreal 4 engine. To be honest, I'm having a hard time imagining why there would be trouble with that for *any* modern game engine. Maybe those colors were somehow reserved or handled differently because of light and shadow effects? That's about all I can think of.
I'll be absolutely stunned if CoT has any limitations like that. I suppose it's possible that the "powers" module of the code might have a more limited palette of color options than, say, the costumes... but powers are going to be part of the Chargen, aren't they? So that would seem to rule that out as well.
Truly good to hear! Was just on CO a moment ago, no grayscale powers or auras at all. They do now support Xbox controllers, though. Still have to do a lot of stuff with the keyboard, and if you get a popup info window it locks you out of combat until you close it with the mouse, this nearly had me KO'd before I figured it out. You do have grascale powers here and there, like shadow wings, but they are colorlocked and only apply to those singular powers, everything else is rainbows.

I really have to think that was more of a "shortsighted design decision" than a software limitation. Somewhere a CO Dev must have come along and singlehandedly decided "I don't like how greyscale effects look" and just assumed no one else would want them either. I continue to be baffled at how that could have been a "technical limitation" on their part. If it was actually a software limitation then that was a pretty serious problem.
