Hummingbird - Hero backstory help needed

I could use some help developing a teen hero with the codename Hummingbird. What I need help with his her origins, I'm kind of drawing blanks here when it comes to making a backstory and I'm willing to work with anyone kind enough to help.

Here are some details:

Name: Alexandra "Alex" Jacobs
Alias: Hummingbird
Age: 16
Nationality: American
Appearance: 5'4", she's a petite young woman with wavy brown hair and green eyes. Mostly human, apart from the wings that are on her back.
Costume: Blue costume with purple highlights. It has short sleeves, gloves, a skirt with leggings and boots that reach up to her shins.
Powers and Abilities: Her primary superpower are her wings that give her natural flight. She can fly at high speeds through the air. Additionally, she has a supersonic "Hum" that is essentially the equivalent of the Canary Cry and is powerful enough to destroy whatever in its path when unleashed at max. She also has wrist blasters that are used to fire from a distance, which has less risk of collateral damage and unintended casualties compared to the Hum. Overall she's fast, packs a punch, and does her best to avoid getting hit.

I have the appearance and power set down for now, but I could use help explaining her backstory. She's a human with wings, but I don't know where to go from there so any help is appreciated.

Could be half alien from a race with wings.

Could be a mutant (always popular)

Drawing a blank but it's 3am here.

A lab-grown genetic

A lab-grown genetic experiment. She was kept isolated and never learned how to speak. Due to "synaptic pruning," she never will. The best she can do is hum.

But curses are sometimes blessings in disguise.

She was bred solely to see if her wings would develop. When she reached puberty and her wings reached full maturity, she was deemed a successful variant and was scheduled for termination and to be recycled as sausage for the rest of the experiment test subjects.

While the synapses in her brain no longer exist to permit her to speak her thoughts, other synapses were reinforced in her brain. These synapses are naturally pruned away in any other normal human. She has the ability to reproduce nearly any sonic frequency, and can actually emit chords and other complex combinations of frequencies. To you and me it just sounds like humming. But she can match the natural resonant frequencies of nearly any object and it is as natural to her as breathing.

She had no reason to escape up to that day. In her 14 years, she had never known there was any other life to escape to. And as a valuable test subject, she had been treated well, if isolated. But when they attempted to terminate her, the pain caused her to lash out. She easily used her humming to destroy the killing apparatus and escaped.

The saga of her pursuit and escape, the people she met, and the friends she made are a story for another day. But she eventually fell in with a band of young heroes, and she learned how to laugh.
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

These are good and I might construct something soon based on this. Any more ideas?

Her wings and any other

Her wings and any other accessories might have been grafted onto her, damaging her brain and leading to her handicap. She might be able to use her humming as sonar and/or a primitive 360-degree sense.

Be Well!

Not sure how magic in your

Not sure how magic in your universe works, but you could always go the magic route. Maybe the wings can be summoned like magic constructs instead of being permanent physical features. Wrist blasters can be amulet gauntlets that blast magical energies (maybe even conjuring shields?). A running gag could be that her friends call her a fairy and she hates that.

This opens up a lot of options for a backstory. She could stumble across the gauntlets on a high school trip, maybe in an ancient tomb or something. Or they're a family heirloom from thousands of years ago. I don't know, but magic could be a good way to go. Either way, great character so far!

With the Aesthetic Decoupling, that would be more of "Not sure how magic works for your character..." ^_^

It takes a while for the brain to fully accept the amount of freedom being brought for our characters in this game.
