We always intended to show off what people did there. Bear in mind this wasn't official alpha testing of any sort: with the chargen securely contained in his personal machine, our Project Lead attended the con and let people borrow his laptop to try it out. We got remarkably good feedback from just that much too.

I'm happy to see some more "traditional" superhero looks. This looks amazing guys. I hope you are really proud of your work so far.
The Altruist, Invulnerability/Super Strength Stalwart.
Nice, I like that you're showing off stuff some of the fans made with the CC at the Con! I can't wait to get my hands on that Character Creator!

Thanks for the update. As a "pre-alpha" it definitely looks promising. I liked most of the individual costume parts but especially the "utility belt". I liked its "bulky, 3-dness". I wanted a belt like that in CoH but I don't quite recall that we had anything like that in that game.
Keep up the good work! :)

I recall a couple that were close but, like you said, still very 2-D in nature
Wait until you see the... nope, that would ruin the surprise.
Thanks for this peek. And it's cool to know these were done by players getting ahold of the chargen for the very first time.
I really like the possibilities that open up with the ability to mix and match textures. Plus you've got the glow effects, and then you add the versatility of asymmetry and body sliders...
This is going to be a blast to play around with.
I mainly remember I always wanted something that looked like it could be a big "battery belt" for tech-based electrical characters and never quite having a satisfactory option for that in CoH. This belt here looks closer to what I was after for that. I know it's a semi-trivial thing but it still makes me happy. :)

I am excited about many things from this update!
For one thing, I know it has been stated a few times in a few places, but getting to see the multiple patterns in application on the costumes is very nice. Specifically I like the aesthetics of the application on “Ryan Coolguy” but the utilization of the application on “Randomstar.”
Another thing I like that I see, is this independence from left and right for certain pieces such as the shoe on “Ryan Coolguy.”
On that note, I REALLY like that it can be applied to shoulder pieces, as demonstrated and mentioned with “Randomstar.” One of my personal favorite pieces was the gladiator-style pauldrons that were available for use. With what the CC has demonstrated, it looks like we can make our own versions of that, but without the limitations set in place that the old game had. Obviously it can be for other uses, and that goes without saying, but my excitement is for that possibility. One can create bulky, highly unorthodox, decorative shoulder armor, akin to a Crusader from Diablo 3, or, you can keep it on one shoulder, and then have a small padded piece on the other shoulder.
I also appreciate the glow on the cape’s clasps on “Magnifico.” All-in-all, I enjoyed all of these costumes and I am excited for what else is to come!!
This! Is! TITAN CITY!
I should also note that on average each costume took about an hour and a bit.

Go look back at some of our older updates - you'll see parts reused here.

That arm-cannon does look cool. I can't believe I have played two big superhero MMOs and lived without this.
Brainstorming...
- Commander Cannon
- The Man from C.A.N.N.O.N.
- Big Sammy Blam-Hands
- Armblaster Alpha
- The Crimson Cannon
We're hoping to also have a variant that has a fancy animation that unfolds it out of your normal arm, but that's... that's gonna take a lot of effort to do. So, maybe later.
Project Lead
at long last we have females!
Good to see we have a preliminary but working chargen to play with. I cannot wait!

Sounds cool... but maybe focus first on making sure characters' "real" hands don't clip through the cannon (like Randomstars' does). ;)

Good eyes. Yes, we'd normally make the entire forearm under the gun vanish - we don't have that turned on yet.
Project Lead
I like the cape very much. It must have been very difficult to implement, with it being upon the shoulders. It's a kind of cape that's very rare in other games.
I may use it for my main char.
Everything seems very promising.
Note: The Great Magnifico was obviously trying to replicate a VIP char from City of Heroes ^.^ (belt, colors, symbol, stripe, mantle).
The variety here is pretty impressive, even with what I assume is a very limited number of options. Is this still with the 3x3 color grid, or have the full 256 been implemented in the chargen? If the former, then this is doubly impressive because it's hard to tell for certain. Definitely excited to get my hands on this when it's finally ready.
My one quibble is that the textures look a little... plastic? Is that a function of the particular materials chosen, (some are shinier than others, but the plastic effect seems more general) or are we seeing a limited rendering system here?
~ DariusWolfe
Errant, TNT, Vibrant and Fluxion on Liberty
Function of the specific materials, I believe. People really liked the shiny spandex. Now I'm sad Ryan removed the chesterfield crotch he was doing at one point. It was quilted and plush. Randomstar's boots are non-plastic.
Project Lead
This is a limited version of the generator. Colors, textures, and a few other things are still being fine tuned.
Wait until you see the... nope, that would ruin the surprise.
Thanks for the quick responses. Really loving what I'm seeing here.
~ DariusWolfe
Errant, TNT, Vibrant and Fluxion on Liberty
Damn! I'd been hoping for a couple of the more inhuman body types (or just more in general, but frankly I'll never be satisfied anyways ಠ_ಠ ) but this is a good look at... well, something I expect to see a lot of at launch. These look awful. Truly, wonderfully awful in a way that only an expansive and encompassing character creator can manage.
An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".
Looks great!

Hi everyone.
I'm a bit sad about the update.
3 weeks without news...3 pictures, and it looks too shiny and too plastic to me.
I don't know if people love shiny spandex but it's not my case.
I hope we will have more classic or stylistic costumes next time. (like amazing costumes on the new website picture in the previous update)
But I'm happy to see people are happy about it.
Keep up the good work.
To me it looks like each person that got behind the Character Creator wheel just looked through the available options and picked one of everything in the limited time allotted. And that can be part of the learning process (seeing what is possible) so that future attempts can be better informed.
It is good to see mesh of features come together, and I think that is the important point for this build of the CC. Once more features & options get integrated I am sure we will see more refined creations.

So what about the other costumes? I'm sure there was more than 3 people who showed up to the panel. Those might look great in a future update.

This update was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for to help “wet my whistle.” But of course I’m insatiable, ever wanting more, and this update has made me CRAVE more!
I’m curious about the kind of feedback people who actually tried out the character creator had. Have you guys found that getting that “voice of the customer” has helped you with your path forward in development? Anything new and unexpected come out of the feedback?

If I followed the thread correctly, they didn’t actually have a panel. Cabbit met a couple of folks outside of the convention, and that’s where it was used. I think there was an attempt for a meetup inside, but it was too last-minute for many.
I believe that Cabbit is still looking for folks to come and check it out, if they don’t mind traveling to NY and meeting somewhere.

Great to see what users can do and the costumes look great as well.
Two complaints: first, are they changing into costumes in a dark closet? Why is it so under-illuminated? Or are the colors chosen just that dark?
Second, the font used to write the names is very difficult to read. The G and C are too similar, as are D and O. The A looks like a Delta. And there’s not enough color contrast—dark on dark makes it harder to even see the differences.

It's not a criticism, but the impression of the graphics / texture, it's "plastic", "model mass" :/ ... I prefer something more real ... im tired about graphics like champions or dcuo... :/ and I can not take more "Japanese design" / manga(big eyes, etc...) a little bit more realism or not "cartoon graphic" please!!!!!

None of the looks of those three outfits or what we've seen before look manga or japanese design to me, so you're in luck.
I can't tell if Randomstar is a male or female.
The one on the banner pic looks female and ugly, so if Randomstar is female, I hope not all the females look god awful in the game, because right now, this is worrisome. :p
Didn't even read, can't stop staring at that Samus Aran weapon.
Ok, I am going to read it now.
As a child, I thought my name was handsome, cause that is what everyone called me.
The one in the middle is a guy. the ones on either end are girls.
what may be confusing is the eye makeup. the a smeared black eye look like we had in COH. the guy and gals both had it.
I guessing advanced textures and basic makeup are not available yet and that's why it looks plasticy.
Seeing things progressing so well is encouraging to me.
The next challenge...(after you get makeup and good skin textures) a pretty girl, and a handsome guy. I don't care if they are NPCs, I just want to see attractive people.
Now that I think about it, NPCs: the gal could be a lounge singer, and the guy a tuxedo wearing MC from a mob run dive somewhere in the city.
(Ive always wanted a super fight in a film noir nightclub)

I understood from the article that the feedback was valuable...was any of it surprising? I also can't wait to hear from the testers!
"Why clean the house when you can be saving the WORLD?!?" ~Justice Wraith
Knowing that this is not the final version, I am really excited for what these examples do show. Earlier images gave good insight into the textures and different materials. This highlights the great asymmetrical options. Can't wait for the launch.
Now I have to change my pants. Can't wait for that second fundraiser.
Is that a “tattoo” on the inner right bicep (look at the far right picture with the cannon arm outstretched) of Randomstar? If so, then I’m also excited about that world of possibilities. If it is not, then could someone inform me what it is really?
This! Is! TITAN CITY!

If that’s the case, then maybe the same is true for the chest/abdomen of The Great Magnifico? At first it looked like veins to me, but if that’s a pattern on the skin beneath the other costume layers, then that would make a lot of sense to me as well.
Either way? I’m excited to get to use it and to not be stuck with skin with patterns slapped on / stuck to it. Do we get to modify the glow effects on these too? What about for these patterns that may be bolder / thicker - is there the possibility of applying texture / materials to them?
This! Is! TITAN CITY!
It's hard to explain but the fact that it actually took me (us?) a few seconds to realize that they had actually switched Randomstar between being male and female is actually a good thing. It sort of proves you can end up making "gender neutral" and/or "gender indeterminate" characters with this system. So far it seems they are sticking to their goal to let us use any costume item/option for either the male or female body models.
To be fair I would also like to see how well this system can create what I'd call "hyperbolically overt" male/female characters (i.e. Power Girl). Ultimately I'd like to be able to create anything on this spectrum from "overtly/obviously gendered" to "gender neutral".

Yes it is. But it's also getting pretty for along. Of course it is likely to change under testing. You know how that goes. In fact there was a UI in place that people used in making the above @ NYCC. We got a lot of valuable feedback on just that alone.

Liking a lot of those costume pieces - even if the creators went a little bit too heavy on the polish lol. Regarding the skin - I take it you guys haven't implemented the full skin textures yet? Just wondering as they look a little mannequin-like (or maybe I'm just not looking closely enough).
Well seeing as we are in Fall 2018 and Issue #0 is also in Fall 2018 I would hope the UI would be far along, we couldn't assume anything else being this close to its release. I was hoping to see what those at the con saw as far as the chargen goes.

Under normal circumstances, that might be a fair assumption (UI being refined). But we do not know what skillset strengths/weaknesses exist on the dev & design teams at MWM. A proper UI design should occur in parallel with the feature set design, but given the distributed nature of this team I think we need to lower our expectations for Issue #0. If they just integrated the CC elements for the first time a couple months ago, I doubt the rest of the project is as far along (aka refined) as we would want.
There have been a fair number of prop/animation/costume suggestions over the years and it seems that dev has adopted those ideas into the design. The original concept for a CC UI might have made sense, but when more options get crammed in you have to also worry about information overload (on the part of the user). The layout might have to change, maybe a layered (or stepwise) creation process has to be used to help the user not get lost.
There is also a level of complexity to how options are proffered to the user. One approach could be a tabbed window approach that lists groups of features (shoulders or capes or whatnot) and maybe have dropdown selection menus. Another (much more complex) approach is a visual paperdoll creator where you select an area (shoulder, face, etc) and get a pop out menu to drill down into options. Something along the lines of the gun customizer from GRFS.
"Just, well, update your kickstarter email addresses, okay? Make sure they're current?" - warcabbit
This is good advice in general. I think some people (especially those that do not frequent this board) are under the impression that Issue-0 is going to be a "full beta" as in we are going to get the mostly-finished product that we have to test, when this is not the case. We aren't moving into our new house, it's more like we can pop in to our new home as it is being built. Sure there might be one room with some hastily-constructed walls and a small closet, but the rest of the place is going to be exposed framework, plumbing and wires that we can't access yet. There should also be a big yellow and black "Under Construction" sign hanging from it. Hardhats, steel toe boots and reflective vests optional (though they would be neat suggestions for the character creator ;^p )
OK from a costume nut stand point, several observations
1) Glowy bits are confirmed for launch. Cool.
2) The cloak draped on the Great Magnifico...perfect, the wrinkles and the simple fact that it obscured the upper arm are great. and the high collar is a great touch.
3) Ryan Cool guy. a guy so cool he blew one show right off. His cloak has a different style. and here the shoulder pieces fit on top of the cloak.
4) Asymetry is all over the place. More freedom for us.
5) The woman wearing the Magnifico outfit on top has really mad eyebrows. She is really ticked off. emotion shows up for the first time in COT.
6) looks to me like there is a button in the chargen that can switch genders and the costume stays the same. More freedom for players.
7) For those that care, I do see a slight bulge with the male characters.
8) is it me or are all the faces the same? we may need to wait for different stock faces to arrive. this is of course the early stages.

Did anyone else catch that the thumbnail for the article was a female Great Magnifico and another example of a costume working gender swapped?
I assume you're talking about the "difference" between these two pics:

Yeah the folks at MWM said years ago that one of their goals was to make it so that none of the costume items in the game would be "gender locked" for only one sex or the other.
With any freedom like this there's bound to be some people who'll use this feature to make "joke" characters but then again we already know people are going to make joke characters no matter what the system allows for so overall I'd prefer there to be no gender locked items in CoT for those people who'd choose to use the items to produce things that are creative and make sense like this Great Magnifico example.

The needs of the many , far outweigh the needs of the few . Or the one.
Well to be clear there's a difference between someone doing a "clever" homage character that's used to get a reasonable laugh and then someone creating a "overt monstrosity" that they use just to jump around like an idiot, grief you and generally make an ass of themselves while trying to annoy everyone else. When I said "joke" characters earlier I was talking about the negative kind.
Basically I don't consider well-thought out "funny/silly" characters to be "jokes" in the negative sense of that word unless the player ALSO decides to grief with said character.
