Good news for everyone who loves the The Simpsons and/or Futurama: Matt Groening has created a new cartoon series called [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disenchantment_%28TV_series%29]Disenchantment[/url] that's set to air on Netflix on August 17th. It's been loosely described as a cross between The Simpsons and Game of Thrones.
The series follows the story of Bean, an alcoholic princess, her elf companion Elfo, and her "personal demon" Luci, who live in a run-down medieval kingdom known as Dreamland.

I have high hopes for this show considering how iconic Groening's other animated shows have become.

Yeah I saw the teaser the other day, it was interesting..
It really made me miss Futurama but I am definitely going to try this show out.

I have yet to see the trailer, but I did see someone going over what it is about on YT, Futurama was probably my favorite animated show, so I will definitely give it a shot, I know a lot of the usual voice actors are in it so it should be interesting

That demon's shadow is freaky. The eye has no shadow except the pupil, and the face is facing a different direction. O.o
I can see they're going to have fun with that.
Well that and the name "Luci" which is likely a cute shortening for Lucifer. Also remember that Luci is Bean's "personal demon" which is another fun little double entendre because I imagine it'll act sort of like her pet/familiar. ;)

I wonder if that mouse hole has any significance or if they just put that in for no reason, I feel like they wouldn't draw that in just because.

Yeah I noticed that too. I suspect that'll play some part in the show - maybe a yet to be shown mouse character that'll be part of Bean's entourage.
I also like how Elfo looks a lot like Bart... I imagine he'll be irreverent and devious like him. :)

True, I've never really watched The Simpsons so I wasn't really thinking about it
I know they got the same animating company, but I wonder whose idea it was to just Frankenstein them from previous characters. I guess it doesn't matter as long as the story is original

Well it is Matt Groening "frankensteining" his own characters from the previous shows so I don't have much trouble with it. I'm sure the new characters will end up having their own unique personalities regardless.

Either way, I'm always up for a good medieval story. Supposedly there is going to be a lot of grog/mead in the show which I'm sure will end up getting them in bizarre scenarios.

Well if they link up with the Critical Role folks they might as well invite [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HarmonQuest]HarmonQuest[/url] in too, especially considering the animation aspect of that show. One might almost be able to accuse Matt Groening of very nearly ripping off HarmonQuest when coming up with the idea for Disenchantment depending on how close the two shows end up being.

I'm honestly surprised that CR hasn't announced it's own at least mini-series, seeing as they are all decent or better voice actors. Not to mention they are basically the sole reason G&S became so popular, but now that they left G&S and started their own gig, while stealing some key people from G&S, I really hope to hear the news that they are starting a new animated series. Might not be their exact campaigns, unless they could get the right 'rights', but nonetheless a CR animated series would be awesome.

It's getting mostly positive reviews as a worthy addition to The Simpsons and Futurama. The few bad reviews are mostly about people thinking it could have made better use of the freedom of Netflix or that a few episodes run a bit too long and could have been tighter. I figure most of this is based on the fact that Netflix is a new "mindset" for Matt Groening and maybe by next season he'll be more used to it.

Good news for Disenchantment fans... The show got renewed for a second season!
This means there will be at least 30 more episodes that'll span all the way into 2021. Looks like they are breaking the show into "10 episode half season blocks" for each year.
I generally liked the first 10 episodes but they could have been "tightened up" a bit. Clearly going from the classic weekly network TV format to the Netflix style "dump 10 episodes at once" format was a bit of a leap for the folks making this show. Hopefully they'll figure it out now that they have more episodes to work with.

Pretty sure that has a lot to do with the fact that Marvel is setting up its own streaming service. Watch, all of the Marvel shows on Netflix (and anywhere else) will get cancelled and rebooted on their new service.
The renewal is a bit of a surprise. I really wanted to like this show and was not able to. Maybe future seasons will be better?
Yeah even I figured the first 10 episodes could have been better. Seems like the freedom of being on Netflix and -not- having to shoehorn the episodes into tight 22 minute cookie-cutter segments (like most shows have to be on network TV) kind of let them get a bit sloppy with the editing and plots.
Again I'm hoping they'll learn from the mistakes made and step it up for the future episodes. There have been plenty of examples of shows having rocky first seasons then pulling out good shows later on. Guess we'll see. *shrugs*

Only problem I really have with the show is the timing of the jokes, I don't really find myself laughing at it, like the jokes are good but it just feels off and weird. Like watching an episode of a comedy show on youtube but they made it slightly slower so they won't get sued or have the video taken off.

I enjoyed the show, but I agree, the jokes felt off, funny but in today's climate, they can come off as a bit eye rolling sometimes.
Well to me, it was more like the problem with Mass Effect Andromeda, when you're playing the game you can see a lot of potential in it, and they did think about a lot of great story ideas, gameplay elements and all this stuff, but then they make one mistake that makes all that stuff unreachable. They screwed up the cutscenes and the voice acting, which is really annoying because I want to get into the story and gameplay but I can't get into it because of the cutscenes and voice acting. Disenchantment is the same way in that regard because I want to find the characters relatable, and I want to laugh at the jokes but because of the timing? I can never access that and as a result I can never late to the characters like I want to.

Well at least Netflix was willing to give them plenty of room to improve. Like I said we'll see if they can do something with the next 30 episodes. :)

I suspected Iron Fist was on rocky renewal ground - its first season was critically panned but apparently they did a bit better with their second season. I was more surprised to learn of the Luke Cage cancellation. Then again there were idiots in the world who could justify cancelling Firefly after one season so I pretty much almost never assume a show is going to get "automatically" renewed no matter how good it is.
I honestly only gave Disenchantment a 50/50 shot at renewal. I guess they were willing to take a chance on a second season given Groening's track record.

Iron Fist and Luke Cage were left on cliffhangers. I was hoping better from Netflix. I didn't expect the shows to last forever. Iron Fist for all the hate was the most binged show on Netflix for 2017, so maybe the critics shouldn't be listened to.
I'm so glad they renewed it. It was left on a cliffhanger too. :(
