Trident/Barracuda Water Origin Hero Concepts

Good Afternoon!

I was reading up through the Apkallu Lore Update, and came across the blurb where it discussed the Apkallu kidnapping surface dwellers and citizens of Titan City with the intent of performing magical experiments on them to unlock the ‘Blood of Kings’ or their potential superpowers.

Furthermore, they seek to brainwash them and use them in their goal to conquer land from the sea.

As a writer I couldn’t help but spitball about the potential heroes and villains that could come out of it, especially with movies like Aquaman coming out and such

My first concept is Barracuda, a former coast guard officer who was captured attempting to save a boat full of civilians from an Apkallu attacked, and through magical experimentation was given superpowers such as enhanced speed, gills, retractable talons and enhanced strength. I figured he or she would take the name Barracuda as a more active and combative superhero in Titan City and the bay surrounding it, taking the fight to those like the Apkallu and perhaps drug smugglers and human traffickers, or something to that effect.

The other concept is a trifecta of sorts, a group a fish-Men Warriors known as Trident, a collection of three powered combatants that serve as challengers to super heroes and villains alike, like a more disciplined and fun loving Namor times 3.

Thoughts or other ideas? Potential powers?

Damn, yeah, it is. I wasn’t thinking about the character when I was developing the concept but I can see how it would be similar.

Ideas for another name and abilities then? I was thinking Lionfish maybe or Tigershark, maybe Orca or something in the Bay of Massachusetts

Enamored.

Enamored.

She's a Siren of legend whom can wrangle the emotions of mankind simply through the melodious sound of her voice. The name is a reference to people becoming smitten with her after hearing her talk/sing, but also a subtle nod to the Atlantean Namor the Sub-Mariner. Mix her up with a dash of Dazzler to have her be a pop star or something, maybe throw a sprinkle of Jem in there for a crime-fighter angle.

If you want to stick to the fish names how about "Pike". It's a good, strong simple name. According to their wiki they are pretty aggressive ambush predators and they have the added bonus of looking kind of Barracuda-like. ;)

Probably some kind of "fast reflexes" melee type guy to match the real life fish. If you wanted a weapon for this guy a "long spear" would be the obvious choice.

Sonic Attack / Sonic Manipulation. Middle of the road and she'll do it to the tune of her own drum.

Age? Would she be an actual superhero and such or more of a part timer to maybe promote an upcoming album or tour?

I believe in CoT terms I would make her an operator, with maybe Psychic Control and Force Blast (Sonic Aesthetic Decoupling) or a Ranger with Force Blast and Barrier Generation perhaps.

She's probably young(er), strong ideals about justice, likely thinks she's above the rules a bit. The best part about being on tour, coupled with being a vigilante, is that you're hard to pin down. As long as she was smart about it. But, hey, smartness might not be her strong suit. Maybe that's how she gets caught. Or recruited.

I don't know which is worse - the fact that you think you saw that vid at all or the fact that you recall that it was exactly 30 years ago since the last time you saw it. ;)

Pike are very similar to barracuda,

That's why I mentioned it given that Gladatoria wanted to use "Barracuda" as a name to begin with.

Fireheart wrote:

And they are also NOT "Barracuda" which was really the only problem with using that word as a name for this game in the first place. Gladatoria gave no indication that "fresh-water" ideas were to be discounted here.

Of course not, I'm just being nit-picky, but I did not perceive Titan City (probably Massachusets) to be a 'fresh water' environment. Nor did I suspect Apkallu of venturing far inland from their salty home. Despite the counter-indications mentioned in this thread, I feel that 'Barracuda' is a perfectly acceptable name for a sea-going Scrapper/Enforcer.

According to the wiki the Northern Pike apparently exists in a majority of US states (including Massachusetts) and across Canada among other places in both fresh and brackish water. As far as the Apkallu are concerned I thought Gladatoria was thinking up a name for his/her own character, not an Apkalluan one.

In fact since Gladatoria's character was supposedly originally a "human" from the "dry land" any Apkallu involved might appropriately decide to give this character a "fresh water" name as a direct connection to the land the character came from.

Fireheart wrote:

It's a nice enough name assuming that it wasn't already used by NCsoft in the game that this game is trying to "emulate". Personally I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole to name anything in CoT for that reason alone - why give NCsoft an extra toe-hold to be able to sue MWM over?

In fact it would not shock me to see that the in-game name filter for CoT filters out as "unavailable for use" a majority/all of the of major NPC names used in CoH. If CoH wouldn't let you use "Superman" why would CoT let you use "Statesman"?

A fair point, and i has the same thought, Lothic. So aside from Pike, any other name ideas that could also come with specialized powers or abilities, like Morray maybe with the ability to send out a magical electrical current like an eel, or something?

I was thinking he or she would take their name from their abilities, perhaps being called like their marine emulation by the Apkallu instead of their name as a way to ‘complete’ the brainwashing process?

In the old Champioins PnP RPG

In the old Champions PnP RPG I ran 30 years ago (25? I don't know), I had an NPC hero named The Conch. I was originally inspired by one of those old MUSCLE figures that my friend's little brother had. He was a tough-talking no-nonsense, blue-collar kind of hero who had a magical suit of armor made out of seashells, complete with a giant sea-shell shield. I kinda-sorta approximated him in CoH, but the shield definitely didn't look right.

I am pretty sure this was the MUSCLE figure that inspired me. I remember looking at the figure and thinking the back of his head reminded me of a huge conch shell, and then I wondered what kind of character might wear an entire suit of seashell armor. That was pretty much it....

Would a character who was a former coast guard officer who was captured by Apkallu after rescuing civilians in her sector from a distress call, and being endowed powers by a ritual to bring forth ‘the blood of kings’ work as an origin?

I almost want to name her Trident but don’t know what her three (I’m thinking because three points on a Trident) should be?
